Sakuya Kudan - a school girl aged 15 is an original character that was printed on garbage ("rubbish" or "trash" depending on where you live) bags and sold for 350 yen for a pack of 10 at a recent Sakura festival near Yasukuni Shrine.

The Chiyoda Tourist Association thought it would be interesting to endorse the moe garbage bags and decided to go ahead and sell them.

It was a chap called Hyashi at Keio university who came up with the idea and he is looking at selling these garbage bags at Akihabara too.

The thing about these bags is that maybe I could not get myself to use them because they are too moe - throwing out a 15 year old school girl sounds heartbreaking.

We are seeing moe becoming a more and more part of every day life now - moe rice, moe curry, moe garbage bags - will be interesting to see whats next.

A really good way to reduce garbage in the country, since no one wants to throw out their garbage in such bags ^^

I wouldn't really pay more just for garbage bags with cute characters, but if they were the same I would prefer that one.

Seems like a shallow trend. Moe qualities getting used to sell more and more things instead of the inherent qualities of the good compared to similar goods. Assuming there is just the character design and no character background, this emphasizes the character's image appeal which would be comparable to using an alluring or appealing model's images to sell.

Well, I guess it's better than having a character from a story you know and love sell a garbage bag.

I would agree with everyone about how difficult it would be to throw out these awesome trash bags. I also would like to see some other characters on these bags just to have more choices for everyone. I am hoping that they start with Moe Milk.... does that sound so wrong? http://gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=449161 image found in gelbooru in support of Moe Milk!
