Golf in Japan title=

Photo of a netted golf practice ground discovered in yet another uncharted evening after-dinner walk.

Golf is a popular and yet expensive sport to play in Japan - I'm guessing that its due to popular demand that one has to pay a bladder and a spleen to get membership to a golf club. Folks here are so keen on the sport that you often see them practicing in public.

Meiji Golf is a site dedicated to the buying and selling of golf club memberships. They list a price of 65,000,000 yen (about 698,586 USD ) to be a member of the Koganei Country golf club.

Folks who have just laughed at the piffling 65,000,000 yen should check the requirements before laughing - no women or foreigners allowed - only Japanese males over the age of 35.

Golf in Japan title=

Fortunately, there exists a way for folks who want to keep hold of their spleen by going to a local golf practice ground - known as ゴルフ練習場 (Gorufu Renshu-jyo) and also commonly called 打ちっぱなし (Uchippanashi).

Golf in Japan title=

These golf practice grounds are usually small in size and are usually surrounded by a huuuge net. An example of one below.

Golf in Japan title=

Folks come to these golf practice grounds for many a reason - some play for leisure, some practice for the game on the weekend at a real course and some play for stress relief - prolly pretending to whack their evil boss in the face.

Notice the small basket of golf balls.

Golf in Japan title=

The balls can be purchased at this machine.

Golf in Japan title=

Balls fall out of this slot into the basket - and if the basket is not in place then they go all over the place.

Golf in Japan title=

A peek through the window in the machine to see more balls...

Golf in Japan title=

...which travel through the pipe into the machine.

Golf in Japan title=

The ground towards the back is sloped and most balls eventually roll into a canal type thing where they then roll off somewhere ending up going through that pipe back into the machine.

I heard that these sort of netted golf practice grounds can be found in Taiwan and China - they be available in your neck of the woods too?

Golf in Japan title=

And here is the price list.
-40 balls for 630 yen.
-Booklet of tickets costing 6,300 yen but it does not say how many.
-315 yen for a loan of 1 club.
-210 yen to get in.

I'm lousy at ball games - football, baseball or whatever. I was good at a certain ball game when I was younger which involved dolphins though.
Ah, and I'm good at Mario BB on the NDS - awesome game.

I guess one of the reasons why many CEO's (that I know) like golf is because its like running a business. The winds are like the external forces affecting a business that you have no control over - inflation, new consumer trends and so on.
Getting the ball into the hole with as little shots as possible is like calculating costs - reaching a goal with as less cost as possible - requiring skill, know how, and practice.
And getting the hole-in-one is like taking on another huge business challenge. A CEO thrives off the challenge and rewards of running the business and getting a hole in one yields great satisfaction.
Any folks here play golf?

    Does Miniature Golf count? =P
I know if I were there trying that I'd be lucky if I even managed to stay up-right while swinging the golf club let alone getting the ball to actually go anywhere.
Seeing the golf-balls fly off into the darkness looks really neat though.

I like your analogy of golf as a business, lol. I've played golf a couple of times. At first I wasn't too good, but after a while i enjoyed it more and got better. But that was a long time ago. Never been to a driving range (thats your golf practising grounds) before, would be great way to get rid of the ol' stress. A while back a friend was telling me about a driving range he went to in the U.S., where they had these small robots that retrieved the balls, kinda like the small robots you can buy that constantly hover your room/house (i cant remember what they are called, Danny, i think you spoke about them before, maybe something like iRobot - nothing like the movie.

sorry for the double post, i wasn't exactly finished.

regarding the membership costing a bladder and a spleen, looking at the pictures from their website, it looks to be at a really high standard. then again, regardless of where you are, golf memberships are surprisingly high anyway, possibly because they need to maintain the grounds, etc. but 65,000,000 yen....

Looks like we might be seeing Danny there soon, what being a CEO and all!!! lol..

Just down the road from my appartment there is one of those Golf shooting ranges. I still haven't been to one but maybe now I'll try one out.

It's neat seeing the golf ball popping up, automatically. I always say the problem with Japan is everything is so convenient, it then becomes difficult for those of us living in Japan to operate in other parts of the world.

My father and brother are huge golf enthusiasts. Of course we're too poor to afford country club membership, but they practice weekly. Sometimes they drag my mom and I along . . . I know the basics but I'd rather stick with video gaming for entertainment lol.

Love the golf = business analogy. Also it's great for networking since golf is a low energy sport and there's lots of opportunity to chat. Golf is also an individual achievement sport, so you can show off your mettle instead of competing and blaming on team members.

Umm, today is about balls~~~~~~~~~ Golf balls I mean.......

I remember how I got hooked up playing golf.

when I was young, I first tried playing golf game on my cellphone, then I found it interesting & explore into mini golf. So when I grown up & have a bit of extra cash to afford this hobby, I started to hired a trainer & practice my swing in the urban netted driving range near the place I used to stay.

Wow, USD700,000 to join the club, it must be very privilege, I wonder what kind of special services they provide to their esteemed members.

The netted driving range in Tokyo look very small compare to those over here, it must be due to the price of land. I like the way Japan golf driving range automate the ball picking hassle, over here they use physical worker to pick up the balls all over the ground 1 by 1, & the coverage area is huge.

It is indeed a stress relief method for me, but when I ended up not hitting the ball, it's otherwise.

Nowadays I dont even have time to practice putting in my office, the putting map is gathering dust now, not to mention I'm still at the highest handicap when I last played, LOL!

Probably I can invite you over a game when you come to visit Malaysia ^_^

My parents play a lot of golf. @.@ I recall seeing a golf practising ground thingy like that in Hong Kong. But then there's larger ones too. And I call them driving ranges... although I'm not sure if it's something Australians say.

I'm not sure if it's changed but the one that my parents used to go to in Australia also had to pay by the bucket. However in Hong Kong, the ones that Dad goes to are far away from the city thus they're much larger. And you pay by half hour.

.....it's been ages since I went to the one in Australia so I can't say for sure how it's like apart from having to pay for each bucket.

    I'm always surprised at the amount of used golf product stores in my area, I seem to find them everywhere... seems there must be quite a large market for golf in Japan. Strange, seen the number of actual golf courses must be incredibly low. ^^;

Backwards. Aim forward.. ball went backwards.. hit the shed and broke a window. Grandpa was kind.. just took the club out of my hand and said. "Maybe this isn't the game for you."

Yes, we have quite a few golf clubs around here. We got plenty of room so the club area is quite big. Got a big one built on a grassy hill near a retirement facility so the older folk keep active I guess. Got several miniature ones too. Only other one I can think of is on the way to to the coast, looks like the one mentioned above but its out in the woods with lots of nets. I have only done miniature golfing.

Long ago and wasn't very good. Used to live near a golf course in Tulsa, OK. And here in Texas there is one in town naturally. We had driving ranges, I think thats pretty much what the regular folk above are doing you just practice hitting the ball straight and far. What we did however was , well let me explain.

They had a guy road around in a cart which picked up the balls like with a vaccume or something scoop. He was covered with a iron mesh cage like we used here for making bbq pit grill surfaces. So we would all get our buckets of golf balls and practice hitting the cart. ROFL. Been 25 or so years since I have been near a golf course so don't know if driving ranges still do that. (was much funner than any arcade type throw and hit game).

    Not sure about having golf facilities with the nets over here... have gone past a few golf ranges. The price and these 'net' golf centre are probably due to the fact that land is so expensive ^^;

That has to be a very exclusive golf club, so expensive. But I'm sure there must be other options too, as far as I know there are some golf camps that belong to the american bases and that they are also only for the military personnel and their guests.

I wonder if that club would allow naturalized foreigners, but I guess they wouldn't even have any members to support the application.

Hm, one of my friends used to play quite a lot of golf.
So he took me along to the local driving range (Pretty cheap in sweden). I belive I can safely say that Golf is not a sport for me. I'm more of an andrenaline junkie anyway and the club just seems to hit the ground more than anything else. Or like someone else said, I hit the ball with the intention of it going forward but it ended going backwards instead somehow. I almost took out a car window once.

It might have to do with the fact that i just use brute strength to swing rather than some kind of refined feeling. I can see how it can be a fun sport to relax with though.

As for the club membership fees... It kind of feels like those suits that are sold for 100's of thousands of dollars. People with too much money wanting to be exclusive. And no women and no foreigners allowed? Wassup with that really... Oo

Alright...third time trying to post a comment...hopefully it works this time.

This is one thing I will miss when I come over to Japan in the Fall. I can't bring my clubs and the prices are ridiculous. I believe it is cheaper to fly to Hawaii and golf there instead of playing in Japan. (This is what I have been told)

The auto tee thing is pretty badass. It is also upsetting how expensive 40 balls are. At my local range you get around 100 balls for about $6.50. You can also demo any club for free, they just have to hold onto your license or credit card.

$700,000 USD for a golf membership?!?! o_o That's just ridiculous... I could get a nice car, pay off my school loans, get a bunch of figures AND still have money left over for that much money... Is it a lifetime membership though? That's slightly more reasonable... If that's the price for an annual membership though then... wow.

I've only played mini-golf :P Sometimes golf video games are fun though. I like playing the "arcade-y" ones (as in not realistic sports sims) every once in a while.

But it's an interesting sport nonetheless.. I'd like to at least try it sometime.

Also, I found it interesting that we saw lots of golf fields in our trip to Japan... I heard it's popular in Japan, but still surprized me seeing golf fields not too far from Tokyo.

I can understand why golf is so expensive in Japan... requires lots of space, and space isn't very cheap in Japan...

I actually work part time at a local golf course here in my home town, where I do basically whatever needs to be done at the time. Put up golf carts, pick range balls using our Picker cart, clean up around the clubhouse, sell things behind the counter, go to Hole #8 on a cart and ride down the hill at full speed the cut the steering wheel to the left at the very bottom which should cause me to spin out in the grass but it just causes the cart to flip.

..alright, so that last one wasn't me, but a friend of mine that used to work there. The cart was fine after that, amazingly. Not a scratch. Got a bunch of stories from working at this place, I've even met a couple of celebrities and a foreign ambassador.

I think that the price is just too much, but that is because you don`t pay for golf or golf lessonsonly, you pay to get an image, to get status...respect, so that you can have conversations with other people and they will have one in mind that you are a member of a prestigeous golf club. That will make them respect you in a way, and imo that is the purpose behind the high price.

I can understand why golf membership is so expensive in Japan. Golf courses are notoriously huge wasters of space, even in a country like mine where you've got huge open areas everywhere. When you consider the space premium in Japan that's not just in the cities...I'd be more surprised if the average Joe (or Takeshi?) can afford to play on a golf course.

I don't have much interest in golf - and it's one of the most boring sports to watch as a spectator. I'm fine with casual mini-golf/miniputt though. Those are fun.

Danny, how do you go about these random night-time walks? You say you keep finding new places you've never been to - do you just pick an area you've never been to prior to setting out, or just keep taking different turns at intersections as you go?

In Sydney Australia, these golf driving ranges are rare because there are lots of golf courses, and it is cheap to play. There used to be one that I saw on my way to work, but recently it closed down. I was once taking a Japanese ex-girlfriend for a drive and when we drove past a golf course and she saw that sign that said it was $10 for a round, she nearly fell out of the car :-)

I like golf, though I tend to flog more than golf. ^^; Our driving ranges are a lot like that, actually. Some of the better ones actually have a machine that brings balls up on a rubber tee one at a time. They don't engineer the range to make balls roll away like that though--usually there's some modified golf cart with a brush that goes around sucking the balls back up. XD

Playing golf here depends a LOT on which course you go to. Some courses cost as little as $15 a person (especially if you walk it instead of ride a cart) for nine holes, but others will cost as much as $100 for a round, PLUS annual fees. Of course, the more expensive ones tend to be in nicer areas, with better-kept landscaping, and harder holes, and the best will attract pro tournaments from time to time. All courses offer a "twilight" discount, usually starting around 3 in the afternoon and going until sunset, since most people don't play at that time.

Finding a good course to play that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is typically just a matter of querying the locals a little and using your Google-Fu.

Golf is fun. Here it is far cheaper than in Japan. No cost to use the driving range and about $5 for 100 balls and 7.50 for 200. There is no automated ball returner so they have to use a modified lawn mower to pick them up. Kinda fun to aim at the guy while he is out there driving. He's in a cage so the balls won't hit him but it's still fun to have a giant moving target to aim at.

Oregon has some really good courses. Although I don't think any have a membership fee that is even remotely as high or exclusive as ones in Japan.

I don't get what all that interest in golf is all about. The game is ok, but I don't think it's worth the price. Also it's a waste of farmland and they use way too much water to keep the grass green when it's not raining (even when other people aren't allowed to water grass and stuff due to water shortage).

Funny thing is that since it's "higly cultural people" who play golf, the politicians wants golf tracks everywhere. However voters and laws are against it so it can easily become a political suicide to support construction of a specific golf course :P

I tried playing a few times (always invited, so I never paid that ridicules fee myself). I think it's somewhat boring. Ironically I tend to do quite good. I was once really close to a hole-in-one, but the ball stopped like 1-2 cm from the hole so if it had had a bit more speed then it would have been there since the direction was perfect.

ive really gotten into golf mostly driving ranges in the last year and a half, its not bad prices where i go usually looking at 8AUD for 55 balls. Once u figure out the swing, hitting a golf ball and seeing it fly its quite satisfying. recently i just found out that theres a driving range right next door to the uni, intending to spend more time and money there during the semester lol.

I'm not big into golf. I do own a set of clubs and go to the range on a occasion. I can understand why older folks would enjoy it since it keeps them active. It's more of a leisurely sport, without the intense workout involved and much of it involves muscle memory and not athleticism. Common practice among "some" folks going to the driving range is aiming a few for target practice at the guy in the cart who collects the balls.

Except it actually is pretty athletic. My swing speed is at about 110 mph when I make contact with the ball. How exactly is that not athletic? Oh yeah if it was muscle memory the professional players would never make mistakes or mess up their swings.

Maybe we have different interpretations of what athleticism means. I'm not saying golf isn't difficult which is why they have to practice countless amount of hours to get their swing right. That IS akin to muscle memory. Baseball players are the same way. They take batting practice everyday just to keep their swings the same. It involves being able to do something almost second nature. One of the greatest athletes in the world, Michael Jordan, failed at baseball because he started it late in his career and didn't get the amount of work necessary to be consistent at it. When I talk about athleticism, to me it means being able to use your whole body and make adjustments on the fly, as opposed to being in a static position and repeating a motion. Having said that, I never said golf was easy, but I think it requires different skill sets. But reading my statement, I suppose I made it sound like only old people play it. I was going off of what it said in the post about a particular club being exclusive to rich middle-aged Japanese businessmen. No harm, no foul.

I came to playing golf in a round-about way. I became a fan of watching it. Then, I started playing it relatively late in life (in my mid-20s). I love golf.

Can't afford a membership at a private club. But, in the US, there are plenty of public golf courses that a membership is unnecessary.

Some golf courses have driving ranges as part of the facilities. Others are similar to what you showed in your blog post. In the parts of the country where it gets too cold to golf during parts of the year, there are even indoor places that are under a dome, or in a building, so people can practice during the winter months.

I don't play golf. I just can't get into it. I've had many, many chances to play over the years, including at some of the best courses in the world (Pumpkin Ridge - Oregon, Pebble Beach - Calif, St. Andrews - Scotland, a couple of incredible courses on Maui). I've been told many times I should play to help my career, but I just don't enjoy it. I have difficulty to do something with passion if I don't enjoy it.

It bothers my wife somewhat that I'm so stubborn about it since the business benefits are considerable and tangible. I wish more CEOs played video games honestly because that's what I do on my free time. But alas, I don't know of a single CEO that plays video games other than at a tinkering level...I play pretty ruthlessly and obsessively at times.

Business people like golf because it's a healthy, social and relaxing occupation. Video games on the other hand can be very anti-social and selfish. Even though I understand it at an intellectual level, I still dislike golf. Wish I didn't.

      Same thing with Air Force officers. It's almost a requirement to play golf to continue advancing. ^^;

Every Air Force Base has some form of golf course (even if it's just a couple holes). The joke used to be that we built the golf course first, then built the base around it.

      However, I talked to some contractors who designed and built our bases, and they said it's not as much of a joke as people think. ^^;;;

That's pretty interesting. I'll assume then you're passable at golf. I hate to admit it, but I am too, but will constantly be the worst one in any foursome. Some of the executives I've played with are suspiciously good at golf, which kind of gets me wondering who's really running the ship. I've heard that the CEOs of the Big Three US automakers are all good at golf.

I used to be pretty good (part of the elementary curriculum back in Scotland was learning golf...go figure). It's been over a decade since I last played, though. Hopefully, I can keep that streak going. ^^

          I've noticed that our general officers are suspiciously good at golf, too. I also noticed that many of the schools we send our generals to are located next to some great courses. ^^;

Golf courses and ranges are pretty common here. I used to golf on occasion but after awhile I found myself getting worse and worse so I stopped playing. Luckily many of the courses I played at didn't require you to be a member - just pay a one time admission. Prices vary depending on the course ($15-45 for nine holes would be a typical price).

I play golf and its funny because I just came from the driving range and found this article. If you want to be a member of a country club it's going to be expensive. It doesn't matter where you live, the more exclusive the club the more it's going to cost. Someone said $700,000 USD to join one? That doesn't sound too far off from some of the more elite country clubs in the States. In general equipment and a round of golf(18 holes) is fairly expensive.

Danny do you know of Ryo Ishikawa? He is a 16 year old kid from Japan who just made his debut on the American PGA Tour. He has tons of Japanese press all over him while he was playing. He seems pretty good but way too cocky. He claimed he will beat Tiger Woods at the Masters but he failed to qualify to play in this weekends tournament.

Traditionally, business transactions are done on the golf course. I'm sure that tradition is taking place in Japan as well.

I was never good at ball games too. I suck at basketball and volleyball and only a few play soccer. Then I played badminton I found that I was really good at it. It's been awhile since I last played though x_x

I used to play golf quite a bit, but lost interest in it these days. Indeed it's a game mainly played by business people, as it's often seen as a 'high class sports/game'. My father goes down to play at one of those driving ranges back in Hong Kong every week.

I remember once he got me and my cousins (who were staying in Hong Kong for a holiday break) to play, and my younger cousin accidently swinged the golf club outwards along with the ball; it was an akward moment when we had no idea how to retrieve the golf club in the danger zone. Had to get the staff to retrieve it for us a few days later...

Used to work as a caddy at the country club near my old home. Was fun times, and the tips were very generous. So while I'm not good at playing golf itself (need to work on my swing technique, putting is pretty good due to all the mini-golf I used to play), I can give advice on club use and how to manage the lay of the course pretty well.

Golf is also known here in the Philippines.

I don't know how the fancy membership things works here, but I don't particularly care. I was taught to play golf at a young age, and I do play, but I'd rather not because it's either I play with my parents or I don't play at all.

I think Golf is really a sport for business people...because only they can afford it. They say you can't really enjoy golf unless you play on the fields...but I'm kinda bitter with fairways because those lands could have been used for rice.

We call those netted golf places a driving range here...and I don't recall if we have many. About one or two.

i love playing golf in japan. since the courses are not as wide as those on us military installations a hook/slice could land you in trouble.

the best part for me is the onsen after playing a round. the bad part is the mandatory lunch break after the playing the front/back nine. if i am in the zone, the break kills me. if things are going too well, the beer seems to help!

Never played nor wanted to. Been to a driving range once and that was fairly amusing for an hour or two. I don't like the status that has built up around it. With all these rich bastards forking out the amount of cash 100 normal families make in a year to buy a set of fancy clubs, shoes, pay for his membership, and fly around the country trying out courses. A perfect example of how out of touch with the world a lot of these CEOs and other elitists are.

I prefer a real sport. One that some out of shape business man could never play for kicks while sealing his latest multimillion dollar deal. Kinda like Hockey, Football, Soccer, Rugby, Lacrosse, Basketball, or just about anything but golf ^_^.

And i don't care how much work it takes, or how well trained they are, or fast they can swing a club. Lets see them put on a pair of ice skates, gracefully zigzag through multiple defenders who are trying to demolish you, then unload an 80 mph slapshot with precision aim into the upper left hand corner of the goal!!! Shazaaam! My point: golf isn't a REAL sport.

I play a lot of golf in summer with friends. It's competitive and addictive but it's nice to walk the fairways on a warm summer evening. Beer is nice too. And Cart Girls of course. It typically costs around 85 Canadian Dollars (6000 Yen) a round to play a nice course, so it's an expensive hobby (never mind the cost of good gear). I've paid $150 for a Championship layout, but usually only once or twice a season. Been thinking lately how living in Japan might impact my golf habit, especially if it's expensive to play there. At least I'd be able top play more than 7 months of the year. Canada is cold...

After reading all those comments it would seem gold here in aus is rather cheap. There's a course nearby that costs $15AUD for a 9 holes, although that place is a tad boring. Some of the nicer places cost about $30-40AUD for 18 holes. It doesn't really start to get expensive unless you go to the country clubs or the private clubs.
