La Repubblica XL title=

La Repubblica was the first national quality paper in Italy to launch a stand alone glossy supplement aimed at the young generation (aged 20-40) with the spending power and desire to be at the cutting edge of the latest trends in music, design, technology and many more urban culture related subjects.

XL provides its readers every month with a broad and comprehensive coverage of music, art, books, technologies, fashion, comics, reviews, charts, short lists.

XL is not a Men’s magazine, but appeals to the young and those who feel young, with ever changing passions and interests.
Above description taken from Media Contact.

La Repubblica XL title=

Am over the moon to have a 3 page feature in the latest edition of Italy's La Repubblica XL magazine.

La Repubblica XL title=

The photo featured on the first two pages is gorgeous - taken by comrade and gravure idol Amano Ai. Folks who don't know Ai-chan can see previous pics that I took of her.

After taking pics around Shibuya, we shot the following video.

La Repubblica XL title=

The article talks about dannychoo.com and the stuff that I blog about. Also covers the Stormtrooping shenanigans, otaku subculture, figurines and my background at JAL, Amazon, Microsoft.

La Repubblica XL title=

Photo taken from the previous Tokyo CGM Night where you can just about see Claytonian, Kevin Cooney, Tkyosam and Glenn.

La Repubblica XL title=

There will also be an online article at La Repubblica XL online which is read by 1.3 million users daily - will expect the servers to get a battering at the beginning of the week ^^;

La Repubblica XL title=

And a few readable closeups.

La Repubblica XL title=

Would also like to thank Frankie who runs an Italian Otaku site - he introduced me to the editor who I invited to the first CGM Night.

La Repubblica XL title=

Snap of the photo on the contents page.

La Repubblica XL title=

And a quick flick through some of the other pages.

La Repubblica XL title=

Games n gadgets...
I took Spanish when I was in secondary school and remember being good at it - but never got the opportunity to use it so forgot everything. I'm currently limited to (in order of proficiently) English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Cantonese. Have Hokkien and Shanghainees listening comprehension but cant really speak. How many languages is you can be speaking?

La Repubblica XL title=

Wifey and I vowed never to go skiing again after injuring ourselves every time we go. We told a friend and they said that we should take up snowboarding instead - but people also injure themselves snowboarding too no?

A colleague at Amazon snowboarded right into a tree and smashed her legs to bits. Remember her sending x-ray pics of her legs with nails in them. Anybody here had a bad injury skiing or snowboarding? Is either supposed to be more dangerous than the other?

La Repubblica XL title=

As I was filing the mag away in the "Interviews" folder, I saw previous clippings and thought we might as well take a lookie at just some of the previous publications that I have been featured in.
First up is Metropolis - a magazine for gaijin in Japan. 2005 was the year when I got the armor and started to troop.
All I did back then was just walk around. The videos got on Digg too. Below vid from 2005 with the horrible huge AFX helmet.

Another 2005 vid below.

La Repubblica XL title=

Was featured in the Kaigai (overseas) Otaku corner of the Windows 100 parcento mag.

La Repubblica XL title=

And a close up for those who read the lingo.

La Repubblica XL title=
La Repubblica XL title=

This was from Weekly Ascii - taken at the launch of the dot asia TLD.

La Repubblica XL title=

A feature in Yahoo Internet Magazine.

La Repubblica XL title=

Was still at Microsoft at the time where I managed some of the Windows Live services which this article was about.

La Repubblica XL title=

Was quite happy about this one - Nikkei Sangyo Newspaper.

La Repubblica XL title=

The article talks about my affiliating strategy.

La Repubblica XL title=

And a close up for those who read Japanese.

La Repubblica XL title=
La Repubblica XL title=

This was from Weekly Spa - I talk about otaku culture and dannychoo.com

La Repubblica XL title=

Close up desu.

La Repubblica XL title=

Photo closeup. You can see the old design of dannychoo.com when it was still running on Nav2.0.

La Repubblica XL title=

Short article where I talk about monetization in Second Life. I mention how I would personally prefer to monetize on the web rather than within a closed confined space limited to a certain number of users. Any Second Life users here?

La Repubblica XL title=

Zoom up desu.

La Repubblica XL title=

An article that I wrote about figure maintenance for Monoqlo magazine.

La Repubblica XL title=

Giant Robot magazine which was published after my talk in LA a while ago.

La Repubblica XL title=

Was on a panel with other power bloggers including Briam Lam of Gizmodo.

La Repubblica XL title=

A few snaps of each page.

La Repubblica XL title=
La Repubblica XL title=
La Repubblica XL title=
La Repubblica XL title=

Zoom in with me pulling an odd face. Looks like I'm constipated or something.

La Repubblica XL title=

And Mac fan which was published recently last Nov.

La Repubblica XL title=

Get along to the Mac fan article to see more in detail.

La Repubblica XL title=

And in Weekly Ascii again. The cover outlining a feature inside the mag - "famous folks most loved gadget."

La Repubblica XL title=

One of the pages featuring many Japanese artists, actors n actresses...

La Repubblica XL title=

...and me ^^;
My most fave gadget was the Xacti - although not that pink one.

Oh man, languages. My first language was Tagalog, but never written Tagalog in my life. I can barely read it, but I speak and listen to it fluently. Next is English, the language I have the most command over. Then, I do Spanish, which I'm alright in, upper-intermediate. Hoping to learn a bit of Japanese, maybe Korean too. Russian looks fun.

So, Danny, do you know what the Italian article says about you? :P

With Hokkien, you can more or less go through the Chinese-speaking areas in Malaysia unhindered. ^^

For me, English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and now Japanese (basic dialogue), plus broken Teochew dialect (I'm Teochew from my mother's side, but Teochew is intelligible with Hokkien, so I can communicate with people speaking Hokkien to some extent). In fact, I dare say my Japanese is better than my parent's native dialects now.

In school, I was taught a bit of Spanish but without everyday use, it goes in one ear and out the other.

In America, it is hard to find public schools offering anything other than Spanish, French, German, and Latin. Instead of Latin, why not Chinese or Japanese. I've heard more people speaking those languages...

In order of proficiency I speak Dutch, English, French, Japanese and German. Once I master Japanse well enough I'd like to brush up on my German and maybe grab some Spanish or Italian language course.

Funny thing is I did understand the “Il segreto per avere successo con un blog? Scrivere di quel che davvero ti appasiona.” outline phrase in the article. (The secret to success of your blog? Writing what you are passionate about.)
Knowing French and having had some Latin in high school helps though.

Will keep that advice in mind though, I'm still new to blogging so trying to find the best way to express myself as such that I find joy in blogging about my passions and that others enjoy reading it too.

Would you recommend any courses or tips regarding the writing itself Danny? Or just that one best use their own style and personality?

If your mother tongue is a romance language, learning any other one which has its roots in latin should be fairly straightforward buddy. Spanish is definitely a useful language, but looking at how things in the world seem to be turning out, Chinese might the best option for business in the future :)

Portuguese, Italian and French are fairly easy once you know Spanish and English. The only exception around might be German.

Congrats for making it into another magazine. Looks like a nice article, judging from the photos.

I had to go snowboarding when we were on a skiing-course. Here in Czech Rep, the skiing course is something you will find at every high school. Well, snowboarding has left me a very unpleasant memory. It was very painful, the posture seemed to be bad for my knee ligaments, and it was very frustrating.

I can speak Czech (native language), English, and some Japanese (have been studying for about 3-4 years). When I was at elementary school, I was studying Spanish, but I have never used it after that, so I do not remember much of it. And at high school, I'm forced to study French. And I understand Slovak, since is very very similar to Czech. There used to be Czechoslovakia Republic after all.

Super congratulations on the magazine article features you got Danny! I liked the CNN video interview myself a lot. Languages? Well I also took Spanish in High School but got in accidents. Wasn't long before I was learning to walk and talk again so didn't get any. But I am fluent in Oklahoman. That give me the ability to fully understand people from the Land Down Under. While my accent isn't like theirs its close enough. ;D. There for I guess I also do not have English down well enough to bother turning in book reports.... (so maybe I have 0.5 languages?) rofl.

English... I can barely speak German and Vietnamese, though I can almost understand all of Vietnamese. I also studied Mandarin for a while, but lack of time to commit really crippled that. I am really trying to learn Japanese earnestly at the moment though.

Only English and Japanese for me. I envy the people living in linguistically mixed places who are good at 3+ languages.

Concerning languages I know only German (mother tongue) and English but definitely want to put my hands on Japanese and maybe also on Swedish/Korean sometime later.

Well, as we already have 3 national languages in Belgium (not including English): I know Dutch (my mother tongue), French and German. Although English is my best known other language besides my mother languages. So that's already 4 (although my fluency is far below par for french and german, but I can understand it quite well).
Besides these, I know some Japanese, some Latin (from school), i can read bits and pieces of spanish, italian, danish/swedish. But Japanese is what I'm currently focused on now for learning, hoping to do JLPT level 3 at the end of the year.

And congrats with the magazine coverage, keep it up!

Nice shot Danny! Who is most suitable than me to make this? CONGRATULATIONS DANNY, here in Italy you're already a star! Repubblica, just for give a little info, is one of the biggest and most important newspapers of Italy (and of Europe, obviously). XL is a direct product of the staff of Repubblica and is specifically made for young people with many interests. Trust me, is a huge score!

I claim two-and-a-third. I'm pretty much fluent in German (mother-tongue) and English (even got a CPE with A-grade to prove that). Though I could use some more practice actually -speaking- English. I think I'm getting a bit rusty.

Then I can speak and understand some degree of Japanese. Through some combination of one and a half years of evening-school, lots of anime and some self-teaching. For some reason I never really managed to memorize the kana and kanji. Started to work on that again after Danny linked iKnow, and I think I'm actually making progress this time.

I had four years of latin in school, and sometimes am amazed about how much crap I still remember, but I just barely grazed (close enough to likely set the foundation for my later Touhou gaming) past a failing grade back then, so I doubt I have much useful stuff left in my head.

In addition, I have some interest in the artificial language Lojban. I worked my way through several chapters of the beginners book, and it's really quite awesome. But Japanese is currently higher on my priority list. Both due to personal interest and actual usefulness.

Most Indonesian would understand much Malay and vice versa, I wonder if that automatically counts as two? Oh, and English, some Singlish (quite an effort to catch the words, eh heh)
