Tokyo CGM Night title=

Back in September, I organized a gathering of bloggers, YouTubers, and folks in IT and related industries (media and creative) at the Wieden and Kennedy Tokyo offices. The intent of the gathering is for a room of like minded folks to share and network with each other which would lead to new opportunities and general harmony.

The next gathering date has been set for the 6th of Feb (Friday) and this time I have partnered with a fellow Britannian Andrew Shuttleworth to organize the next event.

The focus of the meeting has changed a bit too - The event will be called "Tokyo CGM Night" where CGM stands for "Consumer Generated Media." The event will be a gathering of the leaders in CGM - bloggers, YouTubers, Social Networkers and folks who like to share. The event will also be attended by IT folks from the top Internet companies in Tokyo including Amazon, Microsoft and Google. And then there will be folks from related industries such as media and design.

Just like all meetings and events, there is always a focus and unfortunately Andrew and I are keeping the event exclusively for folks who fit the above description.
The aim of the event stays the same - for like minded people to network and blossom harmonious relationships and opportunities.

Will send out mail to all previous attendees for the 6th. If you beleive that you fit the description of the type of folk who are attending and would like to participate then please contact me though my linked in.

Woah- lots of big names in those pictures! (And by that I mean popular people. lol.)
I would love to attend something like this, but I'm still not old enough considering all the cans of beer there. Ha! Looks like great fun, Danny.

But I think networking in Japan will only work out amongst foreigners no?

Cause I heard it's not easy making friends with Japanese.
It's not a shake your hand, grab a few beers over dinner and we are friends kinda thing.

Btw the first few guys are good looking. Why is it that most foreigners are good looking!!

Bah, networks. I find networking to be pretty hypocritical. On one hand, its purpose is to let you strengthen ties other people in your network. On the other hand, its purpose is to give you more access to opportunities by building connections with others. However, if you start building strong ties, then due to triadic closure, the rest of your strong social network is going to get access to the same information. Thus, you start losing opportunities due to networking and dissemination of information. So, it's great to network, but if you start getting too close to people, networking becomes less advantageous. Yes, I do network, especially within professional organizations, but I don't really enjoy it that much.

What a gathering! So many big names from many different areas. It is amusing seeing CEOs and other corporate figures mixed in with folks like Tkyosam! I love Kevin Cooney and Peter Payne's blogs, and read them quite often. I've seen all of Sam and Kevin's Youtube videos as well, and would highly recommend Mr. Cooney's videos to anyone who likes Japan.

I don't do any sort of Networking, unless you count gathering people who play music. Which counts i think, because i don't know some of the people when we meet. We eat and drink beer(tons of it) like you folks did, and we discuss music and exchange ideas(in the form of notes)hahah

I've mentioned this before, but I don't network nearly as much as I should. I don't even know a lot of the students in my year in my program (there's only 50 of us or so in total). It's actually quite worrisome and will probably be a major factor in holding me back in my future.

Unfortunately, school's been out for months due to a labour disruption so there hasn't been much of a chance to change that.

ive been fortunate enough to have an underground network slowly develop out of nowhere. first it started as just hobbies of different people i know, then transformed into something else. whats awesome is anything in the medical field I have a question on, or need help learning about, i usually get an answer from someone that works there in about 48 hours. its great because all of my buddies that went to school with me are now specializing in different technical fields and studies. Most people dont realize they have one until they really look at it.

I was in the media industry doing media research in the past and networking is part of the job. Gotta meet up with lots of media people every week for all the reasons as my job was mainly servicing these clients. Networking is a tiresome job sometimes as building relationships with people takes up loads of time, not to mention even the need to building relationships with people who do not like you. But ever since moving into the telco industry, all my networking became near-useless and non-existence. Really regret to move out of the media industry but things just don't go well all the time in life. :(

Honestly, I'm socially awkward outside the confines of anonymity provided by the Internet. I fare pretty poorly in networking situations, then again, the number of opportunities to network or simply socialized for me have become few and far in between in recent years.

In a few years, I too will have a website cool enough to be able to attend an event like this.

I is not so good at the networking thang... :( How do all you self professed otaku have such good social skillz? Give me some, or I shall bring the hell of 9000 internets down upon you.
