Kaldi is a retail store that specializes in coffee beans but also sells a load of imported foods from all around the world. For gaijin living in Japan who miss certain foods from back home - give Kaldi a try to see if they have it in stock.

The foods that I miss that are not readily available in Japan are Savaloy n Chips (UK food), Maple tea (Canada) and Char Siew/Siew Yook rice (Malaysia/SG/HK etc). Will check at Kaldi later to see if they have the Maple tea. probably wont have any Savaloys though. Some of the food stuffs can be a wee bit expensive though.
What foreign food stuffs do you like that is not readily available in your neck of the woods? I remember buying Japanese food stuffs back in the UK in some Asian center in north London - costed a bomb. I've also noticed that I've forgotten many place names in London after living in Japan for 10 years ^^;

One of the things I'm hooked on right now that's not widely available in here are these Jalapeno flavored pretzel pieces by Snyders - first tried them on the CM filming set last Friday and wanted more ^^;

Kaldi also give out free coffee to the customers. I find Kaldi interesting that they have been able to get customers to pop in even though one is not particularly looking for something - there's some sort of community aura that floats around Kaldi.

Lately I've been comparing how physical retail stores and restaurants are similar to websites. Customers go to a restaurant for good food (quality of posts) but generally don't want to eat the same thing every day which is why there has to be a variety of dishes (diversity of post content).

I personally prefer a menu with pictures (thumbnails to represent blog posts) as it helps me to choose what I want.

As a new visitor to a store, I don't know what goodies there are as soon as I walk in unless I am showed it - some sort of map at the entrance would be useful (site navigation/sitemap).

I also find that the items that I look at most are the ones right around the entrance (items above the fold on the top page).

I've got further observations that I will write up in depth soon but a lot of my research has been implemented into the site of late ^^;

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Japan category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

    I absolutely love Pocari Sweat, but the only store in town that sells it that I'm aware of involves taking an extremely annoying detour to get to. :|

      I liked the metaphor, Danny.

      And I assume that there is a considerable amount of Brazilian food in such stores since Brazilian is the third largest group of immigrants in Japan. Am I right?

        To Quaestor in Brazil - You're right about that - the 2008 Baixadao beans from Brazil were amazingly tasty & complex. Monmouth's (the best cafe in London) usually sells it, so check it out if you're a UK coffee fan out there.

        Sadly, London is the only location in the U.K. , the rest of the country will have to wait a while longer for killer coffee...

      The one around me gets melonpan, anpan, choco coronets and other stuff from a Chicago-based Japanese bakery like 3 times a week. It's weird because I used to think maybe it was just Engrish on the wrapper, until I investigated online one day, and a bakery by that name (which I forget ^^;) actually exists. It just seems unfeasible that baked goods would be shipped from Chicago to the east coast every other day or so and not cost a fortune. And these didn't cost a fortune.

    Hey Danny, I always meant to ask, and you'd be in the know more than most people, are there any delicatessens in Tokyo? It's hard to imagine that cold cuts and cheese would be in the Japanese diet, but 2 out of the 3 girls that my cousin hosted a few years ago loved slab bacon and bologna of all things. Just curious. ^^

    My all time favourite Japanese chocolate/snack thing has to be Meiji Choco Baby. I love the Coffee Beat too...so much yummy Meiji stuff... but ChocoBaby chocolate is soooo yummy.

    Other favourite foreign(and hard to get...) food? Meronpan is a new favourite.... but I'm a fairly decent baker...so if I got my mits of a decent recipe I bet I could try making some. Might do when I'm at home over easter... Ramune is a gimicy-favourite. My friend got hooked more than I did. She went and ordered 6 more bottles from CyberCandy lol. Along with other sweets n stuff for her and her sisters birthday. I would order some more stuff... but its only worth it if I order over £15 of goods... since shipping is like £6-7....(food=fast delivery lol)

    Quick question: do they have decent cheese at Kaldi? I've heard anything beyond processed cheese food is difficult to find in Japan, and the thought of spending an entire academic year without decent cheese terrifies me. XD

    As for Japanese food that I love, I'm in love with nikuman. I found a Japanese conbini in LA while at AX last July, and got completely hooked on those doughy, meaty buns. Unfortunately, being in a small town, I can't find them where I live. I did find a recipe, but it definitely needs some tweaking, and takes forever too. They came out too bready, and not doughy enough, were a little dry, and took something like 7 hours to make a batch. >.< Yeeeah, recipe tweaking is definitely in store.

    I'm not surprised at those parallels, Danny - technology changes, habits change, but in the end people and the way attraction/wants/needs work don't change.

    As for food? Any sort of Asian junk food. We can get them here, but there's helluva expensive. x_x Going back to HK for the summer - I can guarantee you I'll be stuffing all my luggage and carry-ons with junk food instead of padding, and it'll still be gone before the month is over.

    It's really hard to find marzipan in my town, there are only small cake decorations and candy with marzipan "taste" that don't taste as marzipan at all. But when I was about 10 there were loads of marzipan candy imported from Germany and other yummy stuff.

    Gotta love little shops like this. Our mechanics' joint is kinda like that, real community feel. Always takes forever when we go there 'cause you always stop for coffee and a chat. Otherwise just bounce over into the older parts of West End for coffee, cheese and awesome :D

    Interesting thoughts on the similarities between web sites and restaurants. I agree on them mostly. But you have to consider that there are many types of clients and some may be scared away if you try to direct them around with too strong directions/suggestion, eg they want to discover stuff on their own pace:)

    Like the comparison of the store/restaurant to a web site. It's human perception isn't it. Interesting...

    About foreign stuff, not really food, but I'm addicted to Djarum Black, a fine Indonesian tobacco product, which I heard has a ridiculously low price in Indonesia, but costs a fortune over here. Well, guilty pleasures have their prices.:)

    "Lately I've been comparing how physical retail stores and restaurants are similar to websites. Customers go to a restaurant for good food (quality of posts) but generally don't want to eat the same thing every day which is why there has to be a variety of dishes (diversity of post content)."

    That's a very nice analogy you got there and I agree to it ^_____^

    I'd follow this analogy in the revamp of our site ^___^

    What I miss? Haggis and Haddock fish from Britain, fried golden Tilapia with egg strings from Malaysia, Corned Beef sandwiches from Katz Deli in New York and Beef Brisket sandwiches from Nathan's, also in New York (I think).

    There are a lot of foods from Japan that I enjoy but are sometimes hard to acquire in my neck of the woods. For instance, I love those Meiji Muscat flavored gummies with the chocolate covering that are sold in a tube, Pocky(about any flavor), Meiji Melon flavored soda,Morinaga Hi Chews,Kasugai fruit gummies, Shushi(eat about every Friday), and many others, and many many more items that I really can't find very many places in my neck of the woods. I usually stock up on these items when i get the chnace because it might be awhile before I can get them again. As for other international food items,besides Japanese cousine, I really don't have a hard time finding what I am looking for.
