Interesting article.

Are you using mainly your P&S for these night shots? Or still using your slr? Cause they come out pretty well for a p&s. I guess you bump up the iso, and do some post work on them.

About fear, I myself find it easier to overcome them when I was still single. however these days with my family, I find myself more mindful of the leaps that may or may not have financial risks since it would definitely effect them as well. which it not to say one should stop trying to find what one wants, but it does inevitably slows one down.

I think when I was in my teens I was a little bit more "fearless" which was not a bad thing as if I had gave in to the fears I wouldn't have experienced some of the things I did ^^. Now if only I am a bit more fearless now :P

I always look forward to your motivational posts, Danny. They are deeply helpful to me with some of my current situations.

On a happier note, there are some very nice pictures in this group. Is Tokyo as beautiful a city as your pictures always seem to show?

omg danny these r some amazing pics, im so envoius of u. i cant wait 2 vacation down in the land of the rising sun. i mostly love japan since tokyo is so high tech compaired 2 everything else, its so much kooler then were i live. yes iv had several fears which prevent me from doing things, especially wen it comes 2 the opposite sex. lawl my life really sucks that way actually, and i have a fear of rollar costers, that 2 i dont know why i think its the ups and downs that sets me off. its definettly not speed cause i love being in fast moving cars and driving my car really fast, obaying the rules of the road of course.

Another interesting article from Mr Danny. I have to admit that I am held by fear everytime. I fear that if I do something new there might be something that needs to be sacrificed. I usually think pessimistically and try to predict the outcome if I do indulge in this new activity. It has saved my butt most of the time but I dunno if I also missed a lot of things that could have helped me reach my goals.

BTW I'm scared of deep water. That black deepness of the ocean scares the hell out of me! XD

I really should get that camera. But I can't seem to see any stores here that sells it T_T

good article and good pictures. I used to have no fears, to the point where I did things that were actually quite stupid, but they were learning experiences for me, and ones that made me a better person in the end. Now though, after having a son I've regained a lot of fears that I had once lost. I'm working on shedding my fears, even my dreams tell me to rid myself of them, good timing for an article like this. My fears really do keep me from accomplishing what I want in life and they can be quite crippling indeed. hopefully I can keep persistent and free myself from my own chains one by one, and learn to not be held down by possibilities. Not taking chances once in a while leads to depression, and nobody wants to have a depressed father.

Love the photo taken by LX3. I'd spent hours comparing Canon G10 & Lumix LX3, the conclusion LX3 won hands down, reason being the lens aperture is big enough to let in more light, thus create lively stunning images, now I know why it use lens cap.

Fear is really one of the great barriers towards CHANGE. In order to improve our own situation, we need to change some of the things in our lives. No-one knows if the change will bring positive or negative consequences but doing the same routines in life while the outcome is the same is not living, it's sleepwalking!

In my own career, I also found out that by taking risks and applying for a new job using my skills that were undervalued by my previous organisation, I managed to make the move and landed up in an organisation that appreciated me much better. :)

Looking forward to more of your photo walks.

Fear of failure and fear of success seem to be my main fears, never mind they're contradicting xD;; The fear of success mostly comes from the fact that I come from a very sheltered upbringing and so I don't know any 'successful' people personally. Though, thanks to the internet and seminars I've attended I'm gradually letting go of that fear.

For me, I don't feel its fear that's holding me back, but the feeling of 'no matter'. No matter what you try, little good will come of it...something I learned over the past 15 yrs or so.

I used to fear. Most of them due to problems that hampers me from moving on towards my goals. But not anymore. I now look for solutions whenever I face problems. It will work out eventually in the end.

I can think of some things I fear... not all are in my way to success haha... but then again, who knows where I'm going.

Ok, trying to comment for the 3rd time. My fault though.

As i have read throught Danny's 'motivational' series, i think i may have come to the conclusion to the next step in my life and why i can't seem to get there.

Living my life, i know very well that it is very comfortable. My course is Study is easy (relatively of course), passing exams are easy (relative yet again), i can get what i want/need without having worked a minute of my life, i have a great relationship with my parents, etcetc. I can definitely say that i've lived one or the easiest and most comfortable life in this world.

but this is EXACTLY what has been holding me back.

I've come to realise that i have never experienced the worst and hardship. What i need is to experience what it is like to really of had 'lived'.
I've only experienced 'it' a few times, but i know when i've been 'pushed to the wall', i am known to be capable of anything and everything. I've read stories of people who've had it tough in their childhood and teens where they literally lived off what they can scrape off around them, that they were able to grow to their fullest potential.

And as strange as it may seem to some readers, i want to experience that. I want to know what hardship is, what it feels like to have fallen all the way down, completely lost everything and using only myself, bring myself up from that.

Its heaps weird i know, but i think i must go through a 'dark time' of some kind of pain and suffering where i am pushed to my absolute limit, before i can truly grow and move on.
If i try and do it now, i know i'll most likely gravitate back to the way i am now.

Just had one chased me the other day.

I feel something worth noting is that the fear of taking such leaps can be quite pervasive in society at times.

There are some people who probably wont take any leap because society dictates it. Like the general feeling is get a job, get a stable income and don't be trying anything different from the norm.

I have been told before that those who are outside the norm and yet do well, and I am assuming it's because they took a leap despite fears are outside the norm and that you dont have to follow them because that's what they are, outside the norm.

However in recent times I feel that is the wrong way to approach life. Although it is true that doing things outside the norm is risky, such risks are worth it when u consider that you have a chance at doing what you love and making life that much more fulfilling. I believe that they should be calculated risks to be on the safe side, but I feel that a key factor in achieving any happiness, is to take that leap past the fear for what you want.

A thousand people may have done otherwise, but if that is what you want, unless it is clearly impossible and without guarantee of success, just trying is more satisfying.

Taking learning Japanese as an example, I may not know what benefits it may bring or how it might benefit me personally, but just knowing learning this language is one of the directions I want to take makes just learning it even with all the uncertainty, very enjoyable and meaningful.

What kind of settings you use for these night photos Danny and do you use a tripod when taking these...
Maybe I should start to realize what are my fears and how to leap over that valley...
Finding what makes you fear something may take time...

right now, my problem isn't fear but rather a lack of a clear goal to work towards.
i had a vague idea and all, but i become so preoccupied with the demands of society (mainly achieving good grades and reading up on financial guides and all) i find myself gradually but surely steering away from what i originally envisioned.

it's the same with most people, i am sure. time and time again, i have seen living examples of people who had to put aside their desires and interest just to survive in these troubled times.
what with people cutting costs and all.

yes! once and a while...

...and i don't do certain things not because i'm afraid to expose myself, but because i think main stream wouldn't understand my doings (maybe would scare them off-not a bad idea LOL) and i have to keep a good relation with them. Usually this main stream people are those you depend on (one way or the other), like parents, boss, teachers, land lords, etc... - office people in my case - . Therefor, preventing me to conquer my wishes.

So in the end, for many situations i had to contain myself.... and when i didn't, people looked weird on me, and some even though i was being childish or immature for my age. i don't thing immaturity has anything to do with my behave, is just a manner of self-expression. intact, i consider myself very down to the Earth, open minded and sympathetic, as i'm sure most DC.com member are...

Again, these main stream people say things or has a different treatment with the likes of us, because they can't figure our world (some times they don't even have one of theirs or are contained as well) and get upset. They don't understand how hard it is and what it takes to make an animation, game, manga, figure, etc... in fact, our never ending discussions of "The Study of Modern Visual Culture" is a true fact that can take instances and be learned and studied in practically all branches of today's society, such as: economy, market, entertainment, production, industry, science, copyright law, etc...

finally, for those who have to endure some situation, like i have, my advise is: let it slide! don't take it personal, much less take this aggravation with you home, otherwise it will only be bad for you! ...and if you can, teach/show/share those who can't understand, the ways of "Modern Visual Culture". i'm sure is gonna be good for you and for them!! ^_^

This article describes quite well my situation (specially when you mentioned the risks of losing one's steady incomings).

I've finally decided to apply for an exchange there in Japan and there's a possibility of spending there 6 months (a possibility, yes, but I have nothing to lose if I try).
This articles are the fuel I needed to take that decission. Thanks, Danny :3

Once again, thanks for the article. Fear is really the basis of preventing one from stepping out of the comfort zone. This is especially so if one possesses so much in his current way of life, be it material possessions or otherwise. This makes me reflect back on your previous article about being content and happy. I guess what kinda decision one takes is really down to how much of each emotion he/she is experiencing. Decisions are never easy, especially when it's a life changing one.

I have a few fears I guess, enough to keep me awake at night.

Getting older, and so are my folks.

I fear I will ruin my relationship by going to Japan and fall for the temptation of some friends I have there hehe.
So that's what is stopping me most...
I also feared to end my last realtionship for my new boyfriend because I didn't want to hurt my ex.. but things worked out for the best in the end.

I guess I have alot of fears when it comes to relationships. Cheating, being cheated on.. very difficult point which you always bump into.

I agree to everything you wrote Danny, but I also think that fear sometimes is necessary. If people wouldn't have fear, they would be doing anything, e.g., if ones destination is to try killing someone and he does not have fear of the consequences, then he will do it, and afterward nothing good will come out of it. My point is that people need a little bit of everything.

One of the main factors that can hinder ones ascension in an aspect he or she wishes

Can't lie that i never experienced such.
As time passes i gradually try to overcome my own fears. For me it's like if i can't overcome
the fear within me then i'm sure that i won't be able to move forward.

I get fearful sometimes when applying or inquiring about jobs. It's not fear to the extent that it stops me, but I always worry.

Because unemployment is a serious problem in England at the moment, getting back to work is very hard. Because of this I worry when making calls or sending applications or attending interviews. It's tough because you try very hard to sell yourself and your skills to the company, but you know there are many applicants for the same job and it will be much harder to be a cut above the rest.

Because I am only young (22) I don't have as much working experience as many other people out of work, so it just makes things really tricky. I believe that everything happens for a reason and I know I'll get something worthwhile at some point, its just so worrying going about the day to day without knowing what could happen next. The world is ever changing.

Fear eh? I usually fear to do something out of the usual - wonder what would happen if I really did it..

Don't have much of a story, since I'm just a student ^^;

Fear is the largest thing preventing us from doing what we love and want to do. Without the fears we have. We don't have anything to help break those fears. I used to be scared of what people thought of me. That fear had a grab on me that wouldn't go. But as I worked on it that fear went away. Now I have had the ability to do what I want without a regard of what a person see's as weird or odd.

Come to know the true person inside you. Knowing that will shatter the fears you have and will allow you to live your life without those chains holding you back.

Very well said. You have just expressed all of my personal thoughts and feelings on this issue.

This reaffirms the recent decisions I've made with my life and will make me strive harder on overcoming fear and hopefully reaching opportunities many others may miss out on.

I think to have fear is a very good thing. It makes you think and plan... Just being bold and going for something totally new and different without thinking things through carefully spells trouble.

In my opinion- always have an insurance, and some kind of plan B to fall back on... enough savings to get through hard times, the required skills to make the change, make sure that you won't be a burden to your family and loved ones if you fail... not being pessimistic but definitely one would need to be prepared to make the leap. I think Danny certainly did his planning and worked very hard to achieve his goals.

I made changes to my life last year... had a steady job and settling down very comfortably, but I'm not really happy with my job. So I got off my butt and acted... gave up my job and continued studying in a field that I enjoy and feel passionate about. Also made an effort to get some sponsorship for my studies, and ended up back in England :) Also still keeping in touch with people in industry back home as a Plan B if there are no opportunities for me in this new field after I graduate...

That Lumix is an amazing camera! Wish I had seen these photos before I bought my Canon 450D >_< Not complaining but that camera is big. Bought it for figure shooting but would have very much preferred the flexibility of a P&S like the LX3...

I try not to plan ahead too much, so many things can change over time.

So i tend to act on impulse, if i dont give myself time to think of the bad possibilities then they can't hold me back.

But that does make me think "Why did I do that?!??!!?!?!", so i tend to worry afterwards.

Anyways, loving the pictures. I dont know what it is but your pictures always look so vibrant compared to anywhere i've been!

Wow I read through a bunch of your motivational topics, it had once again get me to do something instead of nothing. I shall continue to digital paint my Saber Alter XD. A very stressful period for me now for my private design school's final project while building my OWN portfolio and not what the school forces us to.

I am 25 and compulsary army life in Singapore already took away 2 years of my life. (But it's worth it the friends, and stuff) I am doing something I am passionate in now (conceptual design). I hoped that everyone will get what they what eventually in this new year 2009. :)

Well even if you realize that you should press on despite the fear, it's hard to do so. It was like that for putting on the hard lens contacts. You eyes are telling you to blink, but you have to will yourself not to.

Anyone who answered no is lying to us and themselves. Fear is a naturally occurring emotion and everyone has allowed it to limit them in some large or small way at some time. It is almost biologically impossible to have never experienced fear that hinders ones' self. So yea, stop lying to us and answer yes.

This coincided nicely with another blog I have been reading that has completely transformed my views of myself. i would encourage anyone who is at a loss with their purpose, how to overcome fears, how to live positively, etc., to read the work of Steve Pavlina. If you have no problems at all in your life then you won't take as much out of it. But his writings on sleep, food, and thinking are invaluable to me. Thanks Danny, you and Joseph Campbell laid the framework for my own purpose in life in many small ways. Well in Campbell's sense giant ways.

I love your posts of Tokyo's cityscape. It gets me nostalgic for when I was working in Seoul (which is similar and different at the same time). One day, I'll make it back there and I'll definitely visit Tokyo too. I've only been to Nagoya, taken by car to a marketing office where I dropped off manufacturing samples from Korea, and then driven back to catch my flight to the US. All told, I spent 52 minutes in Japan that was outside an airport lounge. One of my life goals is to actually spend a whole day there.

Fear is something we all have. It just takes effort and courage to admit to those fears and conquer them. People who don't have fears aren't being truthful. Everyone is fearful of something, whether they realize it or not.

i really like this part, occasionally i had discussion with people who told me of bad expirience in japan only through voices heard by other people. sometime i had abandoned myself in pessimistic thougts about my dream, then one day i realiazed that i will know nothing until i try so whn the time will come i'll surely try to fulfill my dreams. i have learned a lot of things through manga and anime :)

Without a doubt, I have fears that prevent me from obtaining certain goals, but my problem lies in the lack of direction in my life. At times, when I am working, I thoroughly enjoy myself, but at other times, I feel miserable. I find that few things actually interest me for long periods of time. Perhaps, it is because I have the attention span of hyperactive three-year old, but the difficulty I have is that my goals often change or are non-existent.

You've pretty much mention my fear... it's that comfort zone. But it's because of that comfort zone that I started buying up all these otaku merchandise and felt like since I'm not going anywhere anyway might as well just spend. Bad decision. So right now work is very light, which is worrisome because I'm losing hours. The safe part is that my position is important to the company. I do want to start something else but I can't decide on what I want to do. I know I need to focus, but there seems to be a lot of distractions that will keep making excuses for me. There is something I really want, but my skills are lacking... again more excuses. So sad.

Anyway... the pictures near the end of the post look really good! They look almost CG-like, is this the Lumix LX3 effect? Image ID#20422 is the one that looks very computer-like to me.

The fear of that uncertainty indeed as you described Danny. Having known that the current pace of life is not what one wanted, it is indeed that kind of fear which stops people from leaping forward. I had just taken that leap knowning that my passion and goal in life is not where I am now and am now embarking on the journey to reach my goal, in spite of this uncertain period of jobs scarcity. At this diffcult juncture, sometimes it would seems diffcult to continue with that journey and would often looked back and reflect on why I had done that leap in the first place... until I read this motivating post. I sense another surge of new found energy and desire to pursue of my life-goals that I set upon earlier. Thanks once again for your post Danny.

Yes, I've had fears that prevented me from doing things I want to do. I still have but your words, Danny, are filled with so much power; they are so motivating. You know, last week I started reading a very interesting book called "Mind Power" by James Kehoe. And since then I began to hear a lot of phrases like:

"Do it!"
"You deserve it!"
"Don't hesitate and just go for it!"

They do pump me up, Danny, just like your motivational articles! Gotta have more of them They're incredibly good!
Mind if I ask you from where do you get that self-confidence and STRONG believe in yourself? Because I came to realize that I lack those two. And what is(are) your motivation(s) to do all the things you do?

Wow, almost everyone's comments are burning! All of them are very inspired...

Just like Sabekuji Kaneda, i fear doing sacrifices, for example there was a time that I really feared painting my Gundams because If I screw up I'll end up wasting a lot of money. But, fortunately n the end I was able to overcome that fear and I managed to paint some of my kits, and they look pretty fine. Of course practice makes perfect!

Also I find it hard to put my trust on someone else whom I think are "below" my abilities. Oh, sure you can call me boastful or conceited, but I really find it hard to trust some people.. for example I don't trust some of my new class mates much because they are "lazy" and so on..But, it might be because I was spoiled by my previous High school classmates who were very capable. But of course since it's the new year I'll be trying hard to change that attitude and eliminate the fear within it as well

Also, just like any other man/boy out there I fear rejection....

as for this thing called fear - i admit that it's been running in me especially for the last year.

fear of the unknown... is it a human tendency (or is it just me?) to desire knowing exactly what results when you do something? as i reflect back into my past one year at work, i notice that is what i had been suffering from.

Yes and it's reality most of the time.

I wish I was more willing to take risks before I started college, which I dropped out of anyway. But now I have a lot of debt chaining me down, but I am more willing to take risks. Funny how life does that kind of thing to you.

I was afraid of chasing after my passion and believed that the career choice my father suggested was the best way. Coming across this site by accident looking for gunpla info and reading through danny's motivational articles, I later met a college advisor and with a knock of sense into me decided to attend that university to chase after my passion to be game designer. I also heard a lot of people saying that the job requires too much blah this and blah that. Then I came to thinking what would I rather do instead, find an easier, less demanding career? I don't think so, because every job is demanding and it's just the person's own mind making the job seem that way.
For example a teacher-a career that seems stressless and not demanding much-well grading over 100+ papers of the same content, figuring out the new contents of new textbooks, etc... it's also demanding and dont forget, getting annoyed by the same student who wouldn't cooperate with the class.

So, Thanks Danny! Thanks for slapping me across the face and allowing me to unbind the chains that have been holding me back from being an otaku!

And yes, for example even now I am a little bit afraid to display my interests for japanese dramas, anime or japanese music. I am sure there are more things I fear ^^

Short yet very interesting article. Even now, despite being 18 this year, I have a fear of doing something different from what my Dad expects of me. He wants me to be a businessman and take over his company, but I feel that sitting in an office, working 24/7, only to live the next 20 or 30 years or so in that manner and end up not enjoying all your hard earned money, is such a waste. Basically, I don't call that living.

I want to do something different, but it's that fear of "if I chase after a different dream, would I still survive in the harsh reality" thing.

And I would really love to get a Digital SLR camera one day ^^;

I think mine is more of laziness and procrastination rather than fear! Haha

I dont fear the future, I look forward to that. But I'm just terminally lazy... thats my main problem... I know I should be working...hard, to the best of my ability. But since year 9(5 years ago now...) I've just coasted really... doing minimal work...I don't know if its the influence of some people around me or if its just me, getting older and changing.... I want to work I do, but I've found that 'I'm sure I'll be alright'. And I usually wait till the last minute to do any work.... the internet is too distracting...

Wise words... and really boost me in my way of thinking about fear. It is always fight between our mind and soul, but to be honest, you clearly show that is important to win this struggle and never give up from your dreams...

You seem to have captured the landscape composition very well Danny to what I personally consider an uncreative, clumsy and awkwardly designed cityscape. Having returned from Hong Kong, I don't think there is even a comparison when you look at the Hong Kong and Kowloon Islands. but that's my humble opinion. I must get myself a wide angle lens!

(notice I gave you the credit for taking the pics, NOT the camera. The better one gets, the more often the camera is credited. But cameras sit in boxes until someone uses them. So who is really good, hint, not the camera. But anyway...) I have the Canon 5D Mk2 - if you want to do some killer night work, that's the camera to have for hand held nighttime image excellence. I'm really impressed with your all of your images "white balance" and I wondered, do you use Expodisc? If you don't, you should consider it. It makes a huge difference in how color reads on a digi camera. Still, your images are very well color corrected.

Your commentary on Fear is f'n great. There are a ton of young folks here who just totally MISS what a great life lesson you offering them here. So let me say to them, read this stuff being posted here on fear and obey it. Have no fear of failure. Many fail, many fail many times. Those who succeeded, just kept moving past failure until they succeeded. You will try a lot of things in your life, (unless you're a lazy game playing no life dullard) and you will win and you will lose. You will achieve and you will fail. But if you just keep trying, things will happen. Why, cause other will give up, and you will not give up. So never give up, never fear failure, just learn from it and move on. If you're paralyzed by fear, nothing will change, not you, not your $$$$, not your sex life, not your happiness. You'll be safe, and you'll be the same. This is your best thread Mr. Choo, love it.

Oh, and here's some more advice for the young folks from the mind of pretty smart guy.

I'm living in a small Romanian town, just 300 k of population. So your Tokyo photos puzzles me a lot. I can't imagine this miracle really exists in the world.
