dannychoo.com in 2008

New years greetings comrades! How is the beginning of 2009 treating you so far?
Wanted to publish the events and highlights of 2008 yesterday but was eager to get pics of the Dollfies up.
First pic recently taken in Odaiba with the Lumix LX3.

Going to look back over 2008 starting with January where I was diagnosed with a herniated disc. My back still hurts from time to time especially after trooping. The armor doesn't feel that heavy as the weight is distributed but is probably a strain on the discs. Been doing regular stretches and have not had the not-able-to-walk-for-few-days pain for a while now. Need to concentrate on strengthening the muscles in the back.
> Living with Illness.

In February, we took a look at how dannychoo.com became what it is today and look at the UI since the year 2000 where I was an anti-Mac, pro-IE user *cringes at the text on the page* ^^;
> History of Dannychoo.com.

And this is what the main gateway looked like for most of 2008. Am constantly monitoring user behavior and tweaking the usability based on my observations and your feedback. Thanks for your invaluable feedback up until now. Will be posting a mockup for a new gateway design soon.

In March I managed to recruit the incredibly talented Hector Garcia away from Digital Garage where he mainly worked on the blog search engine Technorati.
For most of 2008, we spent completely rewriting the Mirai Gaia code base and in 2009 we will see many more clients on the platform. I remember the days when it took 12 weeks to build a web solution for a client. Now we got the process down to less than a week. All clients use exactly the same code base - the only thing that differs from client are some settings, CSS, some images, a handful of HTML files and internationalization language strings. The process we have in place means that we can launch hundreds of websites without employing teams of people to maintain them. 2009 will be a big year for our flagship product Mirai Gaia.
> Startups in Japan.

Also in March, after a couple of years working on the 3rd floor, we moved the office down to the 1st floor where there is more space. Do miss the sunset evenings though.

And this is what the office looks like now. As the company grows, we will either rent a new office or make our house into the company building as we plan to get some land outside Tokyo to build our next house.

In April, I announced Mirai-chans very own eroge Miracle Mirai by Nitro Plus - tentative release date is 16th February 2009.
> Miracle Mirai.

In May, we took a first look at my early years which worried a few readers as they thought I had serial killer DNA in me - this was what my bedroom back in the UK looked like in 1988 ^^;
> The Early Years 1.

We also took a look at what I got up to when growing up in the UK as a teenager. Maybe it was a good thing that we didn't have any Internets as being a groupie was quite fun. Here is Kylie Minogue and I near the BBC studios in London.
> Kylie Minogue.

Also in May, I was invited by the Trenburo to Hamburg to present at Trend Day 2008.
Germany is such a beautiful country - cant wait to go back again soon.
> Trend Day.

Had given speeches in the past but was my first time presenting to a hall of about 600 people. Had a great time and learned a lot.

In June, Hector and I filmed the Shibuya Rock Trooper video which eventually got nominated for the YouTube Video Awards Japan 2008.
> Shibuya Rock Trooper

Also in June, Mirai-chans younger sister Haruka was born at the age of an eternal 13. Look forward to more from the Suenaga family in 2009.
> Haruka Suenaga.

It was in July where I started to write more motivational articles. My goal here is to share my life experiences in the hope that it may help or inspire others to seek and spend most of their life doing what they are passionate about - as opposed to spending most of it wondering "what if."
I also started the Tokyo Photo walk series and usually do the motivation lectures while we walk.
> Motivational Category
> Tokyo Photo Walk category
On the same note, there have been and will always be trolls lurking on dannychoo.com but I noticed that many suddenly disappeared after the article about haters. Maybe they realized that we know who they are?

In August, dannychoo.com was given a huge UI design overhaul to improve whats known as the "First Run Experience" for new visitors to the site. New visitors need a different experience to regular readers and all is explained in the Portal Design article.
Have collected much data since then and the main gateway is due for a new UI tweak very soon.
> Portal Design.

In September, dannychoo.com, my work and trooping shenanigans was featured on CNN. Was rather happy about the coverage.
> dannychoo.com on CNN

Also in September, my company Mirai Inc launched the Good Smile Company site on the Mirai Gaia platform. A huge milestone for Mirai Inc. More big name Mirai Gaia launches later this year.
> Good Smile Company

September was a busy month for filming. Here with Kevin and Olivia filming for G4TV which was aired in November.
> G4TV

In November, Japans premier Mac magazine Mac Fan published a 4 page feature on dannychoo.com, Mirai Inc, my trooping shenanigans and my Mac life. Was rather happy about this coverage too ^^;
> Mac Fan.

Also in November, was invited by Promax BDA Asia to present at their Asia 2008 conference in Singapore. Talked about Otaku subculture, danychoo.com and Mirai Inc.
> Promax BDA Asia

Was also invited by Animax Asia to give a blogging workshop to many Singapore blogger comrades and covered my learning's on Conversion, SEO, Usability and much more. Am thinking of taking some of the slides and covering in a post for all those who couldn't make it.
Thanks to all who came! Still need to blog about the details ^^;

Also in November after the Singapore trip, I was invited to appear at YouTube Live Tokyo where I got to hook up with many other YouTubers such as Magibon and Emily.
> YouTube Live Tokyo.

And in December - a major personal milestone. I acquired what Japanese doll owners call "Musume" [娘[むすめ]] (daughters) - Dollfie Aoi and Saber. I also managed to acquire them for free ^o^
> Dollfie Dream.

Also in 2008, I started a new series called "7PM in Tokyo" where I would take a snap of what I was doing at around 7PM.
The aim of this series is to give folks a constant look at daily life in Tokyo as the A Week in Tokyo episodes can be late at times.
> 7PM in Tokyo category.

Also started to do more giveaways thanks to my generous sponsors. Expect more in 2009. I'm still trying to get a pair of free tickets to Tokyo for you.
> Giveaway category.

Also want to take a look at my most fave figure releases of 2008 starting off with Char.
> Char Rhouseman.

Freeing Asakura bunny.
> Ryouko Asakura.

Shuraki Nida by Good Smile.
> Nida Schuetlich.

Good Smile Chu Chu Astram.
> Chu Chu Astram.

Airi-chan.
> Queens Blade Airi.

Figma Tsuruya-san.
> Tsuruya-san.

And the best figure release of the year in my mind by Alpha Omega - Alice.
> Queens Gate Alice.

And my most fave Figma release was Kagamin.
> Kagami Hiiragi. What was your most fave figure release in 2008?

But none of the releases in 2008 were able to beat my all time fave figure - Max factory Fauna.
> Fauna.

And the plushie of the year goes to the Firefox mascot Foxkeh. I get a load of questions regarding where to get hold of one - unfortunately they are not for sale - you need to either know somebody who works for Mozilla or have the keys to the Mozilla offices. I have the keys ^^;
2008 was when I really started to connect with others in my Twitter, YouTube, FaceBook, Linkedin and Flickr networks - feel free to add me.

2008 was another great year with many advances in life and am really looking forward to what 2009 has in store for us.
And what new years resolutions have I made? I didn't make any.
The reason is that I see a new year resolution as an excuse to put something off. I strongly encourage folks to do something straight away when making a decision. Want to learn Japanese? Do it now - don't wait until next year to make it a new years resolution. Don't make excuses for yourself - do it now.
While I didnt make any resolutions, I do have many todo's on the list for 2009. Starting with web related stuff:-
-embeddable widgets on other sites
-dannychoo.com merchandising
-more giveaways
-favorites
-personalization
-friends list
-themes
-member to member mail
-chat rooms
-Open APIs
-gmail, yahoo, hotmail contacts import
-house visits
-member blog functionality
-complete Mirai Gaia migration
-complete Amazon EC2 migration
-figure.fm relaunch
-otaku.fm relaunch
-Japan news portal launch
-Japan ad network launch
-Japan job network launch
-manga.fm launch
-scans.fm launch
-More local hires for Mirai Inc
-More office space
-Several launches on Mirai Gaia
-America
-Canada
-Hawaii
-Europe
I would like to thank my partners who I constantly work with to share traffic, my sponsors who financially support the ever increasing running cost of the site, and all dannychoo.com readers.
Thank you all and look forward to sharing more otaku subculture life with you from Tokyo!
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

The evolution of Dannychoo.com in 2008...
So many major changes...
I will be expecting more in 2009!!!!!!
2008 was a great year...it's also the year I started blogging and I feel it's the year that a lot of blogs started popping up!!!!!!
Still....I love reading your SAFS and I want to see more of those in the future!!!

I first came here after I saw CNN's news coverage. The thought of someone close to where I am stationed going out into crowded Shibuya and on trains in a Stormtrooper suit, had to see what that was all about. The large community from around the world with similar interests is what keeps me going back as well as the informative articles about where I am stationed (or do port visits to).
Look forward to 2009!
Also, Saber almost looks like a real person in that pic. ^_^

The old gateway UI is so nostalgic - brought to mind my first few frantic weeks of DC-surfing as I explored the site. ^^ Am plenty used to the current one now, but will be looking forward to the new one. There's a couple of things here and there that bug me.
This...really was a landmark year. I remember all of this stuff, but I can scarcely believe that only a year has gone by. A lot of what we know as DC has been around for only a year.
You neglected to mention the Member News uploader around April though - in my opinion, that's a pretty big addition/landmark for DC.com

2008 was indeed a splendid year. Very productive. Very creative. Very exciting. Here's to hope that every year can be just as great :D. While I still prefer the older UI over this new one due to easier accessibility to other pages, the new UI is refreshing to look at and ain't so bad once I got used to it (like all new things) ^^.
And wow, Danny... your 2009 todo list will really turn dc.com into a full blown world of its own! ^o^

Joined dannychoo.com in august 2008. In just a blink of an eye, it's 2009.
Don't really post a lot due to my English, as i am used to using Chinese for most occasions.
I love anime and stuff since 5 years ago. However, collecting figurines only started in 2008 when i work for money to spend for my hobby. 2008 is a major year for me. I entered my first year of tertiary education, worked as a tutor, started to learn Japanese, have new hobbies, joined dannychoo.com's big family etc.
A reason for me to really visit dannychoo.com everyday is that Danny's articles really inspire me. I ever thought of giving up learning Japanese, but one of your articles motivated me to continue. I love your inspirational articles, keep them coming in. =D

2008 was the year I stumbled across this site while looking for information about living in Japan, as I got interested in the language and culture enough to really want to do research. I came here with my love for all things Japanese and lurked frequently for a while. I finally joined halfway through the year and started becoming slightly active here, though I'm still a bit shy on actual posting. It was also the year I bought my first figure and starting my current hobby of collecting figures, especially figmas. I ended the year by getting my first nendoroid and now in 2009 I can only imagine what new things await me. Thanks to this site I've become a blogger and I've started to open up more to the world. It was a great ride Danny, hopefully we can all share many more years ^^

I started to follow your website only within the past few months, but I can't help but jaw drop in awe of all the great things done here. You've really done a lot to bring us what it is like to be living in Japan, as well as sharing the various aspects of the otaku-culture. It'd be really interesting for you kind of do a promotional thing, given the speeches you have given. For example, interviews... to get deeper into the otaku psyche? Perhaps a project similar to the MMORPG project (was it called daedelus or something?) which explores the various statistical aspects of the culture-- something similar to all the polls you give, but more detailed!
Anyway, great year!

Thinking back on 2008, I started doing a lot of new stuff, and found motivation to pick up the pace with my life. It has been tough, and a steep learning curve in many respects. I hope to get there sooner rather than later. I have gratitude also to Danny and this wonderful community in helping me with my improvement, thanks to the motivational posts by danny, and the awesome member news I read which brighten up my day, every day.

That's a happening 2008. Came across dannychoo.com the end of 2007 when I was searching for info about japan for my trip. Started visiting more often after the trip at the end of march.
DC did help in changing my boring life and inspire me to start blogging, but still not very focus on what I want to blog (more like writing what's happening around me). Need to improve this year.
Looking forward to DC in 2009. ^^

Was reading dannychoo.com on a regular basis around 6 months before I decided to register. Didn't join dc.com faster as I didn't have much time, except as to open it, read through and close it. But have read quite a lot of dc.com content also very much of the old articles, and yea, I like it. Especially as I plan myself to try get in the University of Tokyo. Would more appreciate articles about people living in Tokyo as that would also help to prepare of what I'll have to go through except the real estate agents and the drunk salary men, which have been described widely^^

I typed "foreigner in japan blog" into google and dannychoo.com came up. I clicked on the link and i was hooked. Its been months now and i can't believe i was living without this site for a while now. DC has been very inspirational to me.
Hope biotech can advance so i can bookmark DC in my cortex when the psy-internet starts.
You are right danny we need to stop making resolutions and just start doing stuff. Me i got off my arse and have started learning Python programming (i'm on Lists(advanced variables) already). I think programming is essetial for me as an artist so i can start designing my own tools and get into gamedevelopment.

Seeing all those accomplishments listed one after another must make you feel good. It makes me feel good and it is not even my life. You've come a long way from those pictures in the 80s.
I'm excited to see the new features incorporated also. This is my favorite website to visit without a doubt. The community is superior to any other, in terms of kindness and the info and ideas they share.
Also, your work space has to be the coolest i have ever seen. The glass desk, tons of figures, plants, etc. It all combines for a perfect look. Keep up the good work Danny.

Yes, it would be nice to see material from Animax Asia. I'm sure most of us would find it interesting and would learn a lot. Also a good why does Danny do this and not this to the site learning experience for others.

Congratulations on amazing year Danny and best wishes for the years ahead.
As for myself, I've been reading and visiting DannyChoo.com since sometime in mid-2007, but did not register until the beginning of 2008.
Anyways, I look forward to the year ahead on DC.com and hope to be more involved in the DC community.

Even though I registered some time last year, I actually have seen this site for about 3 years? I think I got to know this site because of some old site. (The only active part of the site now these days is the forum, but I don't go there anymore. I rarely contact the owner though.) Eh heh heh.
Here's to hoping that 2009 rocks harder than 2008. (2008 didn't do enough for me.)

Wow i used to pop in and out for a few days. Before 2008 but then again my figu obsession didnt happen until late 2008. Which is when i actually paid more attention to this site. Its the best resource on anything regarding anime figures >_< Theres no substitutions. I've found a few other sites that do figure reviews but they cant hold a candle to mr. Choo.
Great figure reviews and where are all these giveaways happening??!?! I'm feeling like im definitely out of the loop in that department.

I've been a reader of DC before 2008 and finally joined after mid 2008. My first half of 2008 wasnt all that great until Danny started doing the motivational articles. It was at those moments and every motivational article he made that turned my life around into doing nothing in life to doing things and reaching my goals. And for that Danny i owe you my thanks. Your a great inspiration and a guide to all of those who want to better themselves and follow their own path in life. I personally dont want to be like you, but have similar success like yours. Succeeding in wanting to do the things i love which are computers and anime, to be able to share anime interests with other people which is the very core of japan otaku subculture.
I hope that your success keep blossoming during and after 2009. ^_^

Ahh, this is so weird. I remember all these things. :D I started reading DC back in... mid 07. I never joined until latter 08, and I regret not joining earlier. :P Keep it up! I hope this year will be just as awesome. :P

I is being a pre-2008 reader. Just checked a little while ago, the earliest articles I can remember Danny posting are from August 2007. Knowing my memory, that means I've been here since June or July 2007. I don't post too much, though. I came here around the time I toyed around with learning Japanese.
I do owe Danny much for his motivational articles. While toying with Japanese lead me to this site, this site lead me to actually studying it, and recently, making significant progress.

I do tweak some of the photos because the original was dark. Prefer not to as it takes time. Mirai Gaia takes care of the resizing, rotating, watermarking, uploading, sending to flickr and generating of the html.
I think there is an automated way for ImageMagick to alter exposure too - will look into.

I had the pleasure of introducing your site to a good friend last night, and he was amazed at the amount of coverage you had on events that we aren't lucky enough to enjoy here in the states (wonfes, comiket, etc..) I think I speak for many of us here in assuming that 2009 will present many opportunities for you as a business owner. I personally have been driven to study Japanese language and invest in my college career more diligently due to your consistent additions in your articles relating to the job market and foreign study in Japan.
