A Week in Tokyo 30

Bit late with this weeks Week in Tokyo but be knowist that this series will always continue as I personally find them useful to keep track of what I've been up to.
Looking back at the first week in Tokyo, I think about how much has changed over the past year. 2008 has been great so far and look forward to even more changes for the remainder of this year.
First pic taken at a local shopping street. Went out for an evening stroll and picked up some warm snacks. Here they sell deep fried minced fish. Tastes a bit like Chinese fish balls.

Having some Gyoza (Chinese Dumplings) while reading Mac Fan.

Evening shot with the Lumix Lx3. Actually all photos in this article is taken with the Lumix.

Regularly spend time getting rid of stuff that I don't want so that I can easily find the stuff that I do want. Got a box full of Gundam Fix Figuration parts which have just been sitting there for about 2 years. Actually thinking of just inviting readers to my house and asking them to take what they want. Load of Figures and Gundams need to be shifted to make room for the attack of the Dollfies.
What do you do with your Gundam and Figure accessories? I'm trying to think of the point of just keeping them in a box but cant ^^;

The recycling laws have changed but just a bit. Recyclable plastics are mainly food containers. Most other plastics are now thrown out with the combustible rubbish.
They now come round to collect pet bottles which we used to have to take to the supermarket to get recycled.
Unlike Germany and some other countries, we don't get money for recycling our bottles but nearly everybody practices recycling religiously.

Jiji spotted at the entrance to Johnathan's. Majo no Takkyubin is one of my fave Miyazaki movies. Kiki is such a cutie. Does that mean I get a call from Mr Hansen?
Still didn't get why Jiji lost his ability to speak.
Gravure idol calendars up for grabs. What type of calendar is going to entertain you for the rest of 2009?
Speaking of calendars, Congrats to all those who won one in the last giveaway.

This weeks Mc Dees Happy meal giveaways. Wonder when they are going to start to giveaway Nendoroids?

As many of the roads in Tokyo are really narrow, many end up being one way. This road was having some road works done and they were kind enough to put up directions that cars should follow.
Reminds me of the service back in London. When trains were not running at a particular station, they would just say "please seek alternative methods of transportation" and when there were roadworks, one would have to guess how to use a different route.

When you walk into a place to eat for lunch, more often than not, if you are alone they will ask you to sit at the counter. If you are in a pair or more then you will be lead to a table. if you go in alone and the counter is full, they will ask "Go aiseki yoroshii desu ka?" meaning "Do you mind sharing a table with others?"

Tempura lunch set - 880 yen.

Meeting up at the Moai statue also known as "Moai Zou." You will always find people hanging around here waiting for others.

Charging my Suica. Suica is a chargeable card which you can use to pay for transportation and other goods and services. Many mobile phones have Suica built in. I prefer the card version as it fits into the glove of my Stormtrooper armor.

Day in Shinjuku. People speak of Japan being in recession but I don't notice any slow down in the pace of peoples shopping habits. Business on my side is doing well too.
I'm not consciously spending less either but one of the reasons could be because that most of my otaku merchandise interests are covered by generous sponsors ^^;
Are you finding yourself spending less in 'this economic climate'?

Stuck the original of this Lumix shot in the Wallpaper Pool.

Nabe Udon at Meguro. About 1,200 yen.

Vader gets the Pachinko treatment. The TV commercials had a load of troopers with the horrible AFX helmet (the one on the right).

Salmon wrapped in cabbage for lunch. 990 yen.

Am selling the Postbed sewing machine and was asked to print out some photos for the dealer who I'm working with. Nice n glossy photos for 39 yen each. Printed some figure ones as a test too.
Will probably regret selling the machine as I'm guessing I will want to make clothes for my Dollfies in the future. Will probably get a home sewing machine that fits in the cupboard though.

Bento lunch with Saber. More pics of Saber at Good Smile.

The Lumix battery does not seem to last too long on one charge. When looking for an official battery from Panasonic (that costs about 5,000 yen), I came across a third party battery for 830 yen! Have been using it for a few days now with no problems what so ever.

With comrades at Fox Japan. More of what happened on the night soon but here is a taster for now.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

I know I'm spending a lot less in this recession. ^^I My parents, my friends and myself have lost jobs this year due to it. Just yesterday when my friends and I were driving down a normally busy street were surprised to see it full of foreclosure and for sale signs instead of customers.

I used to buy fast food or snacks and eat out a lot more, now only on special occasions like birthdays or New Year. Also, I haven't pre-ordered a lot of figurines, me waits until things get a bit better. I realize that most figures I like can be found later with a bit of work and luck, so it won't be the end of the world.

Spending seriously less. Crisis struck hard on all contractor-based workers ("temporary") and seen many of my friends fired and returning to their home countries, not to mention those now living literally under the bridge. To be honest, I don't even know how I'm spending my money. I can be too strict, but most of the time I can be too reckless. It depends on what I'm spending on; Gunpla, magazines, manga, CD/VCD/DVD, food, gas (for my motor), etc etc. My current job doesn't pay that good.

My manager was in a corporate meeting this week when the head of the western division of the US abruptly fired her boss. Then he looked across the table at her and said "I've been here for 4 months and I still don't know what YOU do, either." If the guy was ever in the office he would know that she's the reason everything runs smoothly.
While I hope to to achieve a management position someday I'm neither incompetent nor an idiot. While a full frontal lobotomy would fix this, I don't particularly relish the idea. No, but I should.
But I already postpone some purchases because of it.
Mainly due to currency exchange. You see, our currency (real) before the crisis was 1,5 to 1USD. Today, it's almost 2,5 to 1USD.
Which makes a big difference, even more when you consider the abusive taxes the government charges for imported products... SPECIALLY electronics.
But overall, I think we "normal" people who don't have large sums of money applied on stock exchanges and stuff, are all in the eye of the storm.
Because a global crisis with such proportions will eventually hit everyone.
I'm hoping we all get the short stick and can all survive the crisis..

Am I spending less due to the recent economic developments? Yes and no. Foreign imports, definitely yes. As our dollar is worth less than a squirt of piss on a used cocktail napkin. Domestically, no. I seem to be buying all sorts of stuff especially since its near xmas. The amount of pre-xmas sales this year to try to get people to spend are astounding. I might feel it come January tho.
I usually buy a third party battery in addition to the name brand one included. No problems, but they do seem to taper off quicker near the end of the charge.
You're selling the post bed machine? And I was thinking you might still be interested in making bags and stuff in the future under DC. Guess new priorities are presenting themselves.

Starting last year, the whole capital city is plunged into a plague of roadworks. They're mostly the doing of a popular water company, replacing there old pipes with new ones. My dad works in the company and he hates it when people complain about their job. He tells me that it's either they get annoyed right now (with them replacing their pipes so that they can provide their customers with the quality water that they deserve XP) or get annoyed later when they start experiencing water problems x_x

My favourite location-- the Ryoanji Temple. The zen garden there has to be the most meditative, peaceful place on the planet. I envy you; I hope you will still have the chance to see some of the beautiful "Koryo" (autumn leaves). Hmm instead of spending less, it's more like I got less amount of things nowadays with the same amount of spending like previous years. For example, about one/one and half year ago, 5k yen figure can be bought at MYR 200, but nowadays, even 5.5k yen figure cost about MYR 250 here :(

"In the original Japanese script, Jiji loses his ability to communicate with Kiki permanently, but in the American version a line is added that implies he is able to speak (or she to understand him) again. Miyazaki has said that Jiji is the immature side of Kiki, and this implies that Kiki, by the end of the original Japanese version, has matured beyond talking to her cat."

That's exactly how I saw it. To non witches Jiji was always just making cat noises, but with Kiki's magical powers she was able to understand him. As she lost confidence in herself her powers faded and she lost the ability to understand Jiji's meows.

I've been spending more because of the poor exchange rates. I haven't really been on much of a shopping spree, but rather I decided to keeping with my normal shopping habits regardless of the fact that the Australian dollar is about half the value of the US dollar and Yen.
I got a huge shock when my 25,000 yen book order of manga and light novels ended up costing me $420AU when i'm typically used to an exchange rate of 100yen=$1AU (it actually was 60yen = $1AU).
Also my subscription to megami and dengeki G's magazine now costs 5 times the price you could pick one up for in Japan per issue. I had to change to postage type to keep the costs down.
Because I decided not to change my shopping habits, I didn't cancel any of my figure preorders, and for some reason all of my preorders are coming in all at once and so far my credit card has been charged at times when the exchange rate was at it's worst.
I think the worst rate I gotten charged at so far was 54yen = $1AU. I think that was for my book order. (T_T)
I'm definately enjoying the manga and figures, but it sure is painful.
I prefer to pay insane prices to continue my otaku hobbies rather than putting everything I love and enjoy on hold for half a year to a year (or more?!) until the exchange rates return to normal.
I think this is probably the worst possible thing to happen to me so far since I import a lot of Japanese books, Anime magazines, figures and games.

i stopped spending on unwanted things. also stopped pre-ordering any figures or buying new ones because of the increase in exchange rates. and stock prices have fallen through the roof here, leading to housing rates tumbling down (builders offering flat 30% discount over previous rates)

I am watching my spending... the plus side is that domestic US toys are getting cheaper (as Walmart and Toys R US are trying to drive customers into their stores) I am really target my spending. My next big purchase will be Masterpiece Grimlock.
Hey Danny... since the yen is so strong are you getting good deals on the imports i.e Maple Syrup and Smoked Salmon from Canada. Anyway good look on your business and look forward to your posts.

Indeed. With the economic situation in America, i try to spend as little as i can. I actually calculate what my next paycheck will be. For example, i worked about 38 hours this week plus 2 hours overtime. I multiply those numbers with the hourly wage i get per hour, ovetime is 50% more then regular hourly wage where i work. When i get my numbers, i subtract deductions such as rent, utilities and medical bills then end up with the number of money i will be able to put in my pocket and spend it anyway i want. Lately i haven't been buying much of anything anymore at least until it gets closer to Christmas.

spending less? hmm, maybe on food & electricity bills ^^; been cooking food at home most of the time, cheaper & oishii too.
but still spend on games & figures >_< these 2 things are the things that raped our wallet the most, sigh.
It's been so long i've bought any new clothes ^^; eventhough I'm a girl but nowadays I spend more on figures, argh!

Aww, I love Kiki's Delivery Service too! I'm actually a big fan of Pom Poko, too.
As for the whole economic crisis, I'm trying to spend less money nowadays. It's actually getting better, especially since gas has become a lot cheaper and I'm trying to bring my own food from home rather than buying on campus. The costs add up especially if you buy lots of snacks and drinks from campus :(

Dollfies make me so blissfully happy! X3 Sadly will have to restrain myself from them with deathly determination this Christmas...
In NYC, when the shopping season officially started off two weeks ago it seemed nothing stopped NYers but some say not really. Word is most shoppers came and gone, buying only what they planned to (the big sale stuff). There's still massive sales going on right now but the ravenous shopper and the buybuybuy atmosphere just isn't there anymore due to layoffs left and right. Still, I have to admit it is a good time to snag good deals. During my city street meanderings I noticed many tourists taking advantage of the weak dollar. Yes, give us your monies.

I find I'm spending less... but not because of the recession xD only because I'm looking for work and my mum wants us to save for a trip to Chile to see her family. Am working on a brief portfolio to see if I can get any website or graphic design projects happening for me ^^;;
Shame you're selling your machine, I hope you get the best price possible for it~ I think later on you can get one that can use thin needles and fine thread for your dollfie. I worked at a clothing alteration's head office for a few months and wanted to take everything home to teach myself to sew xD;; I want a doll so I can try making outfits myself :3

I try not to spend too much on entertainment since I can be completely entertained by the internet. The last major purchase I made was L4D ($50), which means that I won't be buying anything for Christmas.

I think I am spending more. ^_^; Just bought probably 30,000 yen worth of anime merchandise this month and just went to Kyoto today (40,000 yen). Hurray for COLA (Cost of Living Allowance). Though it needs to go up do to bad exchange rates.
Looking forward to seeing what Dollfie you get Danny. I haven't seen them too much around town. A few at K Books (not Saber at least last time I checked). Mandarake gets them sometimes but I haven't seen it. If you find a good place for these please share. ^_^

I usually horde money when I'm in Seattle then blow it all while I'm in Tokyo, but recent events have made me decide to start saving. It's just a precaution though. I haven't been affected. Buying games is actually a good way for me to save money. Anything that keeps me home, away from bars, and away from people who expect me to pay for their dinner is big savings.

it's odd but look at this reasoning:
if everyone is spending less, at the end, companies will also suffer from the decrease of consumption and the whole economy is collapsing
at any time, if you keep acting normal, then, there is no risk for the economy to be strongely affected

If my sister hasn't been borrowing money from me I think I'll have about 6000 pesos n my wallet...but, that's gonna go down in half when I finally decide to buy a new Gundam.... Anyways, why don't you send those Gundam parts to me Danny? I can definitely use them XD

I don't find myself spending less but maybe that's just because I already really think about buying something before I go ahead and pick it up. I don't just buy on a whim, recession or no recession. ^^ this xmas I'm getting myself a GHWT bundle kit and the saber nendoroid. I'm so pissed last month I missed the release of Shiki Ryougi because my credit card failed >_< ack.

i wonder if its accurate to say that most who say that they r not affected by the current crisis are kids or students who aren't working yet? mebbe their parents r affected but the kids r still spending their usual $$$ on figures, manga etc. i am sort of affected by it. although i still can afford my usual 'vices', i am thinking more before spending and hv stopped from buying some stuff that i otherwise would be buying.
as for eating alone, at usually eat at the counter too when I'm alone. in fact i was just at one for lunch a few hours ago (might post at pix of my sushi lunch on my blog later)! used to always take the counter seat at the sushi bar. usually got mistaken for a japanese cos mostly only japanese businessmen eat at the counter here. enjoy looking at the sushi chef at work too.
Spooky Kitaro at McDees? i luv that anime.

wow, nice briareos figure.
I know many folks who have lost jobs, but the people really being hit hard by this are normal laborers and factory workers. The people at top just whine for money from the government, but the folks at the bottom don't have a socialist safety net to fall into. It is a shame really.
If anything those unaffected should stop to consider the plight others are in from time to time. That while some of you are buying toys and electronics ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars, there are others who can barely afford to eat food. I'm in a bad position myself...

Of course I`m spending less, things on work are getting more difficult this days. Besides, is me, or everything is more expensive now? At least figures looks more expensive to me now...

Gyoza are yummy. Although if it's cooked steamed, I much prefer the Chinese ones over the Japanese version, but pan-fried ones both are quite nice and yummy. Just thinking about them makes me want to eat my lunch now.
No calendars for me. I generally just use the electronic Mac calendar for all reminders and schedule stuff. Haven't had a proper wall calendar since I was a teenager. Last ones I had growing up included Lamborghini, Cindy Crawford and an Alfons Mucha.
Not sure if I'm spending less during these times, especially now it's Christmas and have to get presents and gifts.

The gas price seem to go lower everyday here, but i don't know how long the goverment can hold it up. But by spending alot, i mean spending it wisely also. Look for sales mercendise is way the best way to go.

I'm taking a financial hit in Tokyo & Yokohama right now; especially compared to last December. I got ¥107.4 = $1 last December. This time, I got ¥90.13 one day, and ¥86.65 later.
I was in Shibuya today. I didn't eat there; but today was the opening day for the new Burger King. (Dogenzaka 25-5?) The Whopper was ¥300 today instead of ¥430. I still need to go the Baird Brewpub in Naka-Meguro.
No, I will not comment about any DVDs I might have obtained. X=}#

Have slowed down in a lot of areas of spending. Still ordered the Gundam Seed Destiny movies (4th on the way) and the full Gundam Seed sets. That will probably be it for a while.

I am definitely spending less. I don't go out to movies anymore and am using Netflix instead- since it only cost 16.99 for three at a time unlimited. Do they have something like that in Japan?Or England?
