Japan Free Toss title=

Seen the Free Hugs in Tokyo for many a moon now but this was the first time I saw "Free Toss" where they toss you in the air.
In Japanese this is known as "Dou-age" [胴上げ] (pronounced "Door-ageh"). Folks visiting from the UK however may get the wrong idea about a "free toss" - "tossing" in London slang means to wax ones dolphin...

Related facts 1: In Cantonese, waxing the dolphin is also for some reason referred to as "hitting the aeroplane."

Related Facts 2: The Japanese word for waxing the dolphin is known as Onani [オナニー] which according to wikipedia comes from the German word Onanie meaning the same thing. I think its the same word in Korean too.

Interesting how one can learn such useful stuff in a single day.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

The Swedish word is "onani" as well :3 Being tossed in the air seems fun, reminds me of Super Mario Sunshine for some reason.

Interesting that the japanese prolly got "Onani" from the germans hehe... so many anime have german influences or stuff in them it always surprises me a little. :)

The term onanism (also used in English) actually comes from a story in the bible. In it the christian god kills a man calles Onan, because he doesn't want to concieve a child with his dead brother's widow, (The god also killed his brother btw.) but rather "spills his seed on the ground".

No, it's not like that. It was more like I posted a fact. Later somebody asked for it. Even later somebody added the same fact again. Now we have the same thing 3 times and in 3 different places.

I was thinking maybe it would make sense to try to organise the comments a bit more to make them more readable and preventing dublication.

My intention wasn't to "catch comments" for my post (I can easily see how it can be read that way). I guess I would have said the same even if it wasn't my post to begin with.

Point noted. I should be more clear in what I write as I can't even find the original intention in my previous post anymore >.<

Wow... I've seen free hugs before as well but that was only at an anime convention. The other variation closest to this is with big signs saying (insert horrible incident) was an inside job.
I have to say, I kind of misinterpreted "free toss" as "hitting airplanes". I think I'll stick with free hugs...

I have also heard the cantonese one being cantonese myself lol...definitely doesn't make sense to me lol, but more so than "wax the dolphin". ^_^

I know americans use the phrase "jerk off"...
Wondering if any other countries than UK use or know of the word 'Wan*' or 'Wan*er'(when being called one), if you know the work then you will know the missing letter haha.

Onani comes from the bible and is about a sin committed by a man named Onan, who released his soldiers on the ground. I'm not sure how it moved from the bible into different languages (I'm not sure if anybody knows for sure) but we do know that it comes from the bible.

First thing that came up when I tried google for a source of this. I prefer using sources for statements like this :)

I see a lot of people being confused by this.
I can't say much about the tosses, but there was a social experiment done with "Free Hugs" before.
It was about how people don't interact with each other nowadays, and giving away hugs was to help people brighten their day even if by a little.
It showed how so many people thought it was weird to receive a hug from a stranger, and you would see many people walk away from the huggers with a strange look on their faces. It also shows how even strangers could give each other hugs and brighten each other's day.
The campaign at one point got banned by the local authorities and they had to gather people and create a petition to continue to give out Free Hugs.
    http://www.freehugscampaign.org/
Visit the website if you're interested.
    --
As for this "Free Toss" thing, I don't know if it's a copy-cat deal to the free hugs campaign and the like, but it's a nice idea. Taking it a step further, towards the 'fun' direction though.
    --
As for me, I'd probably take the offer of a free hug or a free toss.
It's just a random act of kindness and fun.
The people giving out the hugs/tosses give it out because they want to.
Maybe they think it's fun, or trying to help out strangers having a bad day get a smile on their face.
Don't read too much into it; that's one of the social disconnectivities that this campaign tried to point out.

The first thing came to mind was the UK way of thinking "toss". LOL
I was like, man, that guy is desperate. Then I realised it meant throwing something...

I never knew it meant "Hitting the aeroplane" in Cantonese, Any ideas of how it is said in Cantonese? anyone? XD

I would take free hugs, but I don't think I would take a free toss. It'd probably be cooler, but it'd take a huge amount of trust I'm not willing to give perfect strangers. I know I'd have trouble letting even close friends and family toss me up and catch me.

Perhaps it indicates a bit of untrusting nature, but I simply don't like the feeling of being completely helpless in midair. x_x"

    From Wikipedia...
In the Biblical Book of Genesis, Onan (Hebrew: אוֹנָן, Standard Onan Tiberian ʾװnān ; Strong) was the second son of Judah.[1] Certain interpretations of the narrative concerning him have led to the use of the term onanism to refer to masturbation or to "pulling out".
I think the term Onan came with the missionaries to the east...

A person of say 120 kg being tossed by 6 men would mean that each has to toss 20 kg. It is kind of heavy, but not unrealistic. On top of that it's my impression that people in Japan usually aren't that heavy.

I don't like this. It appears too much like dwarf tossing. Quoting wikipedia on the topic "Dwarf tossing is a bar attraction in which dwarfs wearing special padded clothing or Velcro costumes are thrown onto mattresses or at Velcro-coated walls. Participants compete to throw the dwarf the farthest."

I've seen free hugs, but this is different...though if I want to get in the air I'd rather jump on a trampoline...

I was thinking the same thing. It would be the same as a free hug, except you wouldn't be able to chase the guy/girl doing it when you notice what happened.

I remember something about two old guys (brothers I think) who got a visit from two strangers. Those young women started stripping and they paid so much attention that they didn't realise that all their money disappeared. They did wonder why two strangers would do that more or less without saying anything but at the time they didn't think hard about it.

"Tossing" is a very common word back in school times for me in the UK. "He's such a tosser" lol...

On the other hand, I did get tossed up in the air with bed sheets back then, but one deliberately let go of the sheet and I landed near my tail bone. Wasn't a great experience I have to say.

You gave me an idea. It would be interesting to do in Europe. Maybe I should try it. I know at least two people, who would totally go for trying this.

There is one problem though. I think we could get sued for a fortune if we drop anybody who is hurt seriously (like $150.000), so maybe we shouldn't do it >.<
Maybe we would even risk being arrested for having a ride without permission and ensurance. The laws regarding rides are pretty strict because nobody should be hurt by trying a ride made by somebody else. I guess that's a good idea.

This reminds me of all the random signs people make up at anime conventions around here, but usually it's free hugs. The one year a bunch of girls had signs that said "Will yuri for yaoi", basically meaning that if two guys made a... uh, public display of affection of some type (it was in public, fairly mild stuff) they would do the equivalent with each other. A couple of my friends I was hanging out with were doing this and it was pretty fun until some guy who didn't have anyone else asked me, had to betray another friend and send him after him, lol

I hate people with signs like that. The main issue is that if you talk to them then quite a lot of them fail to understand any language people know here so we presume they are from Eastern Europe. We have a few locals (very few) and that's one thing. If people can show up from another country, then they shouldn't have the need to beg. People will not pay to that kind of people.

I just realised something. They will give the toss for free, but they say nothing about catching you again. Maybe they will only toss and then not catch you since they didn't promis you to catch you.
Alternatively they toss you and then you have to yell yes for being willing to pay for being caught.

I remember here in Toronto sitting down drinking a coffee on a nice summer day, we had a few girls going around giving free hugs. For some strange reason the city folk cant accept the concept of just receiving a hug from a stranger.

There were so many bewildered stares and some even running away from the approaching hugger.

So that leaves me with a question.

Why do people in my city seem to feel scared of the unknown? And it is only a free hug, everyone needs a hug? True?

I cant even imagine taking the free hugs to the next level of "free tossing"...haha

The legal complications and possible sexual harassment charges awaiting each member of the tossing team would just be beyond belief.

"Ohh he touched my arm and when I came down from the toss they grabbed my butt"

"You will be hearing from my lawyers".

    Cheers!
