KPop - Kara

Thanks to Jin for posting this. While I speak, read and write Korean, my current line of work doesn't involve me speaking it at all which is a bit of a shame. My first position as Web Marketing Executive at Nature had me speaking Korean nearly every day. Would travel to Korea often for work too.

My wife watches K Drama from time to time though which is good listening practice although the story always seems to be boring.

Never heard of Kara but do like their sounds - want more!

As with learning Japanese, I listened to a lot of KPop including Clon, Solid, Pak Mi Kyung and Baby Vox/Fin.K.L that Jin mentions below.

One of my fave girl groups was S.E.S - they got good tunes and are also cute.

Need to get myself more Korean keyboard stickers.

Original text from jinstevens below.

Kara is yet another girl band from Korea. Their song, Honey, recently made it to number 1. It's been interesting comparing them to Girl's Generation who I wrote up earlier. Kara seems to go more for the cute concept rather than the sexy / beautiful that Girl's Generation aims for.

If you think I like KPop girl bands, then you probably guessed right. Probably started with Baby Vox back in the day, then Fin.K.L. and a host of others.

Was surprised to learn that one of the Kara's members was only 15 and still in middle school!

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

      Re: SES

      WOO! Spice Girls meet BeeGees. And then they all go out and get knackered with S Club Seven!

      This difference is, unlike any of the abovementioned, no-one in Kara of SES sounds any different from her sisters during a "solo" turn.

      Tch.

      I enjoy their sound, but homogenation can go too far => boring. This cultural difference will keep them out of the Western market...(why have five girls, when one repeated five times = quintet?)

    한국어를 능숙하게 사용하시네요, 대니 츄씨. 많은 외국어들을 배우셨어도 어려운 한국어를 참 잘 알고계시니 제가 대니씨를 존경할 수 밖에 없답니다. 저보다 문법을 더 잘 알고 계시니 제가 더 열심히 공부를 해야겠네요 ^^;

    Hmm... Nowadays, I'm not really into contemporary idol-groups. However, I used to be a huge Fin.K.L and Jo Sungmo fan back when I was living in Korea. That was when I was in elementary school. Currently, I enjoy listening to Lee Moon-sae, Kim Jang-hun, and Yoon Do-hyun's songs. They're very well respected in the Korean music industry, and their live performances are 100% invigorating.

              저는 미국에서 거주하고 있답니다.

              Just a quick lesson on Korean:
              1. 나는 금년 서울에 가고싶어: I want to go to Seoul this year.
              This sentence is correct, but <금년> is not often used in everyday Korean phrases. The sentence sounds more scholarly ;)
              2. 나는 올해 서울에 가고싶어: I want to go to Seoul this year.
              This sentence contains the same meaning, but is used more often than the sentence above.

              Sorry if I offended you in any way, Danny. I thought that I could help out a bit ^^;

    Ahhh... you got that "geegeegeegee" song rollin in my head again.

    So girl bands are a big thing in Korea? Seems like there's a bunch. While some of them are catchy, I can't say I would listen to them regularly.

    Was kinda impressed with some of these dance sequences tho. Not particularly with the dancing itself, but how they trained so much they can perform it all without messing up. Like this dance sequence version of 'Gee' with 9 girls dancing continuously:

      Korean and Japanese are both derived from Chinese, and that's why some of korean- and japanese kanji vocabularies happen to use same chinese letters, but different pronounciation

      Once you master japanese, i'm sure you'll easily learn chinese or korean as well.

      I learned fundamental Chinese language when I was in elementary school in Korea and I can recognize simple kanji letters.. ;)

        I'm not so sure about easily learning Chinese once you know Japanese. The hardest part is memorising Hanzi of course and unlike Japanese, you can't just revert to Kana if you forget how to write. Idioms are also used a lot more commonly than in Japanese.

        Then again, most people type nowadays and hardly need to write by hand but even then, it's easy to get homonyms mixed up.

    K-Pop is the second most addictive culture I've found next to J-Pop. K-Dramas, K-Music...Once you've explored it, you can never get away from it! Many songs on my iPod consist of 5 GB of K-Pop over my the 3 Gigs of J-Pop, and I listen to them more than anything else in my library (Solid, Seo Tai-ji, and Rain FTW!). ^^

    I'm also leaning Korean! I'm still getting the hang of it, and I've found it easier than Japanese (and makes learning Japanese easier).

    I love some of the Korean movies (My Sassy Girl rocks) but K-Doramas are a bit too hard to swallow for me, sometimes they are waaay more intense than those Brazilian/Argentinian/Mexican/insertothershanishspeakingcountry telenovelas. Let's not forget that Koreans make the best MMO games in the world ^^.
    As for learning Korean, I just got cable with Arirang so I might try to learn something from their Korean lessons. From my personal experience typing Korean on a computer is so not intuitive compared to Japanese, but Hangul has got way less signs compared to Kanji/Kana.

    On occasion I watch Korean tv programming here on MBC. They also have KBS on one of their other four channels. I may have seen Kara perform on TV.

    As a side note, MBC used to carry Japanese shows from FCI about five hours a week along with one hour of morning news. They no long carry it though. T_T

    South Korea is interesting for a gamer, especially if you're into MMO's because, as Abi-kun said, it's a big business there with some well-known products (Ragnarok Online, Aion). For me to learn Japanese is more important but wouldn't say no to some Korean lessons.^^;

    Hmmm...I just can't seem to get the feel of them like I do with hello! project and AKB48. Kara also sounds a bit too "Americanized" that song had too much English in it.

    But tsunku is holding auditions in Korea and I can't remember if its for a Korean member or for a korean group(like what he did when he went to taiwan and formed bing qi lin shao nu zu)but hopefully something good will come out of it.

    Wow look at you guys go with chinese and korean.... Motivation for me right there, as I could only read a bit of the chinese convo there; I should definately finish learning how to read and write chinese. Heck, while Im at it, I should brush up my french too, Ive lost all knowledge of french due to non-use ><

    And what a coincidence, Ive only recently begun venturing into K-pop (currently have an obsession with watching taeyeon videos from youtube). Besides the point, there are sure a lot of these bubbly girl pop groups in korea. And they all seem to have a good share of hate clubs. Scary.

    i always wondered on how difficult learning korean would be but it sounds much easier to pronounce. I do listen to some k-pop songs but it's rather limited. the reason it is limited is because i borrowed my friends mix cd of Kpop songs and well i got addicted but never had the motivation to get more songs. any good kpop artists for recommendations that can rekindle my interest?

      SG Wannabe is a bit stretchy and long, but they're a very good ballad trio.
      Younha sang the song "Houki Boshi" for Bleach, and has various songs in Korean and Japanese.
      Rumble Fish and Crying Nut are some good Korean bands, too.

      I haven't listened to Korean songs recently, so maybe someone might be able to support more details~
