Japan Train Commute

Folks over here like to keep themselves occupied on the trains. Some school girls sit on the floor eating and having conversations with their classmates, some fidget with their mobile phone and then there are some who polish their rifles...

I usually pass the time by looking out the window at the scenery or use the time to do some spring cleaning in my brain. If I'm not doing that then I'm watching anime on the iPod. How do you pass time on your commute to school/work?

      Ah you can use your phone, so long as its only texting/playing games etc. Just not answer/speak on your phone.

      For me, its usually listening to music when travelling, or my trusty NDS/PSP

      That's what I want to know too. Once I took a snapshot of a stall in a shopping centre with my phone then went to get something to eat. Next thing that happened was one of the security guys tracked me down while I was queuing in the food court, warning me not to take photos. Everyone was staring at me for a while but I just ignored them, got my food and sat down to eat ^^;

    So is that an airsoft rifle or something?

    There isn't any public transportation in my area so I'm forced to drive if I want to go someplace so I don't really want to mess with my cellphone or anything while driving (even though it seems so many people do).
    The last time I flew across the country I just brought a book along with me so that I had something to read, and the airline also showed a movie as well as some random television episodes.

    Rifle polishing? What the heck^^;;
    As for me, I just close my eyes and hibernate.

    Oftentimes I just look out the window while listening my iPod, especially when I'm on the bus. I'm a huge bookworm, so I'd love to read, or play my DS, but alas, I get car sick really fast >m< How can people read in a moving vehicle, I say? Everything's too bouncy, and you try to focus on the words but you just wind up with a huge headache...

    Wow! This just shows the difference in culture. Take out a rifle in a public place in the US and you'd have panic. You'd definitely attract the interest of law enforcement. With our history of violence, most folks would assume the worst; a guy about to go "postal".

    Japan lets people walk outside with their airsoft guns?! That's sick (in a nice way)! Here in the Philippines, one will be put to jail if one carried an airsoft gun openly. Here, one needs a license to own an airsoft gun and a "permit to transport" to take it outside (outside as in hidden in the trunk of your car and not outside as in polishing it in a train).

    BTW I would love to sit at the same spot as the rifle boy. The way that girl in front of him is sitting, I'll definitely see something nice! XD

    Whenever I take the train, I pass the time by looking at the passing scenery. I also spend the time looking at people. But most of the time I'm too busy being alert because almost everytime I ride the train, it's pack. Chances of your belongings getting stolen is high O_o

    I call shenanigans. The gun isn't really there, it was just edited in. The shadows look wrong to me, and he isn't holding the gun right. Initially it looks like he is playing with the scope, but if you look closer, the gun is too far off to one side to be doing that.

    I know Japan sounds like a crazy place, but I don't think they're crazy enough to allow someone to carry an air soft gun outside it's case without good reason. Especially if it looks as much like a real gun as this.

    Well first of all I have my headphones on with my ipod. Then again I almost never take them off, the only time I'm ever without them is when I'm at home and even then I'm still wearing them half the time.
    But other then that I'll either play a portable game if I have one with me or I'll just stare out the window and think about whatever is on my mind.

      Yep-- another cyclist here! Traffic can be pretty rough in Chicago so I can't do anything else other than concentrate on the road. If I am traveling *very* far I take trains and in that case I am usually listening to music and studying japanese. When I'm riding the train in Japan I usually listen to music and look at girls while pretending to study. ^^

      I really think that's an airsoft rifle. I mean, a lot of airsoft companies like making their guns look as real as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if that really is a recoil pad on an airsoft rifle.

    I watch anime on my Macbook when I'm in the train to work (and lately also in bus). But sometimes it's too noisy or ride is bumpy or no suitable seat left (sun orientation). When walking or waiting, the earbuds are connected to iPod instead.

    The trains are SOOOoo clean in Japan. It always amazes me, especially since I'm from Chicago and the trains here are disgusting and filthy. I try to avoid touching any part of the train except in the winter when I'm wearing gloves. I don't even like holding on to the handles/bars; if there are no seats, I use the stances that I learned during my gung-fu training to steady myself.

    I usually find myself knocked out because its rare that I have a day off and I'm exhausted. Always seem to hear when Shinagawa comes up though. Other times, I will stare out the train window, not really looking at anything in particular, and think about random things.

    usually I just listen to my mp3 player or watch anime or dorama
    or read a book
    if it's really early in the morning
    I'll just sleep
    because personally I think it's pretty disturbing to look at everyone's tired face in the morning
    and this reminded me of my experience taking the trains in Tokyo
    on my first day in Tokyo...
    I arrived in Narita around 7.00 am...then went straight to my hotel to put my stuff
    and the first thing I did was...
    circle the whole Tokyo through all 29 stations of the Yamanote line
    I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to see the whole Tokyo in less than an hour
    :D...

    Y'know, I work around guys in camo carrying various implements of projectile weaponry, and even I did a double-take at the rifle there. This place never ceases to surprise me, even six months along.

    I tend to either watch the scenery pass by outside, or catch up with news/Twitter/etc on my iPhone. I don't do the daily train commuting thing (my apartment complex has a home-to-work shuttle to the base at Yokosuka), but I do ride up to Tokyo every so often. It's definitely a sharp contrast to my last public transit experience in San Diego; much more efficient and timely.
