Welcome to dannychoo.com

Writing this post up for the new family of Boing Boing readers (but applicable to all new readers) who decided to stay on at dannychoo.com after my guest blogging last month. Welcome everybody and thank you for staying on!
Had a great time and was an honor to be able to write for one of the most read blogs in the world. Was also an interesting experience using Movable Type which seemed to be in need of much improvement in terms of cache management(?)
Many Boing Boing readers have decided to keep up with the goings on dannychoo.com through my Twitter, FaceBook, the RSS feed or the eMail subscription.
Would love feedback from not only the Boing Boing readers but also recent newcomers on what made you decide to stay on? Was it the Japan stuff (A Week in Tokyo, Photo Walks etc), Figures, Subculture, Trooper or a mix of everything?
I saw *many* comments like "love the Japan photos - get rid of the perverted figures" type comments. Does the subculture stuff put you off from viewing the site? Would you prefer to have filtered settings to show everything apart from Japan stuff?
What was your first run experience like at dannychoo.com? Was the UI confusing? What improvements would you suggest?
Would mean a lot to me to hear your feedback. Feel free to leave feedback for me over at Facebook or Twitter too.
No intention to stop writing about otaku subculture because much of my passion is there. I do think however that I can easily cater for folks who are not interested in particular subjects through UI tweaks and settings - lemme know what you want.
And just a recap on all the posts that I wrote on Boing Boing over two weeks.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Same... I stumbled on DC.com when I was googling about something otaku-related (already forget what it was), not just once but several times... After few times stumbled on this site, without realizing it, I've been a regular member of the community...^^ Well, I guess the giveaways might also help on making me comment regularly... lol. But the start of it all was when I was googling, it just proved how strong DC.com SEO is...

I really can't remember what I was looking for, but I found DC.com like early to mid 2007. This was around the time I really started to heavily collect figures, so I was probably looking for pics or reviews, or something that I was really trying to track down and stumbled across this awesome site. ^^; hee. And concurring with loliped, pretty sure the SEO ended up snaring me easily, because I do remember the article that came up was the first result in the Googling I did.

What made me stay was the community itself and of course you Danny. It's rare to find an otaku community online that is led by a great man and doesn't have trolls and pedophiles all over the place. Although there are some posts that I probably shouldn't read about, it's all a part of the culture and hobby.

True... I was surprised to see how nice are people in this board... Nevermind troll, I never even saw any insulting comment once... Which is surprising considering how many people are in this board... Either the environment made people behave nicely here, or the moderator are doing one hell of a great job...
Agreed on your second point too, Mimi... Pedophiles are disgusting, aren't they... XD

I agree with you two.
I've discovered DC because of Star Wars Official Blog ( http://starwarsblog.starwars.com/index.php/2009/01/14/trooper-at-coming-of-age-day/ ). Since I was really looking for a place where I could talk about anime/figures/Japan, the site was indeed a blessing.
Student, Motivated Future Hikikomori
@lolipedofin, @Mimi: I strongly disagree with you two.
What do you mean "disgusting"?
How can you put all the pedophiles under the same roof? You basicly hate them for no apparent reason, and people that do that are usually called "haters".
I can easily say something of the sorts: "Hey, people that like big oppai and girls that are over 18 sure are grouse, huh...XD"
Things don`t work this way, you have to learn to be tolerant or else you can`t really function properly in this world of ours.

While there are a lot of idiots lurking around the Internet, being here made me realize that there's less of them around then most of us think. A lot of people *do* want to get along online, and Danny must've set things up right when this community first started growing. When you have a whole group of people being polite and behaving, you end up drawing like-minded people.
Trolls invite troll-like behaviour from people who normally wouldn't behave that way. People react the way they're treated. I think that's why this site is the way it is today. That, and those that are malicious for no reason get nuked with extreme prejudice.

Figures have always been why I've come here. Other stuff is okay, but figure reviews, whether posted by you or others are my favourite part of the site. Got an account here specifically to reply to this post ;)
I found you via BoingBoing. I'm not really interested in Japan specifically, I'm quite curious about just about anything. I've watched plenty of anime, but because I think they're entertaining rather than out of any particular attachment to Japan in particular.
I do like the wide range of coverage here, though. All the reporting is of very high quality - engaging, funny, and above all, interesting. I suspect that pretty much anything would be made interesting with Danny writing it, but I've specifically enjoyed:
- Your vast enthusiasm for figures, especially that one picture recently where Saber is demanding a biscuit - that was hilarious :)
- All the slice-of-life posts, showing normal everyday things in Japan. I find other cultures really interesting, and even the posts about what you're having for dinner are fun for me.
- I don't really mind the supposedly perverted stuff. Some of it is stuff I personally wouldn't enjoy (I don't really like the idea of an itasha covered in eroge stickers, and I wouldn't put up dakimakura covers on my walls or anything) but I can appreciate that Japanese culture is different to my own, and that this is part of it. I like to think of this site as a kind of "cultural reporter", showcasing what it's like to live and work in Japan. Part of that is reporting on bits that other cultures might find distasteful and I wouldn't enjoy the site so much if it didn't share such a wide range of things.
- Tasty idol pics are never a bad thing either :P
In summary, I like this site for its eclecticism, the genuine enthusiasm of the writing, and because Nanami Sakuraba is very good-looking indeed. Thanks for all your hard work, Danny!

I guess most of the people here started off with anime before they found any particular attachment to Japan....^^ At least I never heard of anyone watching anime because they like Japan, more often than not, it's the other way around...
And... Welcome... Hopefully you enjoy the community here! XD

Well I can't remember how I stumbled upon your site, probably was searching for something on Google, but the design catched my eyes immediately. At first I was a bit lost, but that is because I found so many interesting stuff I didn't know where to begin! But what made me stay (and to post) here was the "Motivational" articles, I found them very enlightening, and in the end it made me wonder who is this guy who writes such good stuff and also collects tons of dolls and other strange stuff I never even heared nor saw before.:) And this mixture of Japan stuff, Figures, Subculture, Trooper, etc. is perfect: just what I would expect from a blog about Japan! Keep up the good work Danny!

I don't really remember what I was looking for when I stumbled on this site, but the Japan articles were one of the big draws for me. I tend to have rather strange tastes as it is compared to a lot of Americans, so the subculture stuff doesn't really bother me at all.
Although the eroge stuff does make me a tad leery about browsing from work, I generally do most of my surfing at home anyway so it's not really an issue. (I do find people who complain about the "perverted figures" to be incredibly lulzy though).
I found you through Boing Boing, and I really liked the stuff about Japan and decided to stay. I'm not really into the other stuff but I don't mind it, sometimes they are interesting.
I was a bit confused when I first came here, but I found my way around in no time. In any case I'm subscribed to the rss feed so I have no problem.

What I like the most.... your pictures about the everyday Japan we (the dudes around the globe who have nosebleeds about probably every single detail about the life in Japan) wouldn't see anywhere else. Or is it only me? :) The first time I ended up on your site, I didn't have a clue whats going on. I suppose it was about a year ago. But now I kind of stumbled here again somehow and now I'm a subscriber... though I'm still a newcomer. I like the photos, random news about various things - like today there was a post about a flying car - man, you say it's about otaku - you're way beyond it. And that's what I like. I guess I can't really express myself quite as I would like to... but here is a big thanks to you for doing the things you do. And I LOVE that mysterious Stormtrooper who hangs around Tokyo. :O) Sorry for the big post. :)

I find it hard to believe that there is anything boring about Japan. I'm sure the locals would say otherwise. hehe As far as the perverted stuff goes, I guess you can't please everyone, but I figured that for those who don't want to be associated with those things would probably just avoid your site. Less trolls I guess. Anyways, from a long time reader, keep up the good work and good luck with the extra site traffic. ;)

Anyways, I'll try again:
I subscribed to your RSS feed before you started posting for BB. The BB post just made me pay more attention.
I usually only checked your posts that showed up in my newsreader (I assume these are all the posts you make on your site?). I couldn't believe how much content you produced, and some posts showed up as duplicates in my newsreader. So I decided to checks things out for myself and signed up for DC.com.
I don't mind the figurine posts and pics, some of them are quite nice, although I can't see myself collecting them. If anything it would be more in the line of traditional 'action figures' (always wanted a Terminator) :-)
The content about Japan, both from a business and a day-to-day-life-in-Japan point of view really interest me. Especially since you are in the 'web business'.
So, keep up the good work, and we'll try to keep up with you :-)

When I stumbled upon DC through many days searching I read my first article from Danny, I spent the next 7 hours or so no stop reading as much as I could before passing out on the desk. Then when I came to, grabbed some food and carried on reading.
I didn't register at first, or even post until half way through last year, but eventually I was hooked on the community and felt I had to join in.

I think that interest in almost all subcategories of otaku culture lend themselves to being interested in Japanese culture as well. It's like a gateway to something greater. I've loved Japan and Japanese culture ever since I was a child, and I don't think that will ever change. My flirtation started out with video games, but quickly expanded to various cultural elements. It's nice to find a community from various places abroad that share that interest. It's also nice to build cultural bridges through common interests. Japan's isn't the only culture I'm interested in, after all. ^^

Pretty much everything Roby says above - including seeing the "copy before sending bit"!
To summarize my long post:
Living in Japan posts (househunting, shopping, etc.) = awesome
Week in Japan photospreads = awesome
Strange Japanese stuff (the eggs for dolphin waxing included!) = awesome
Its the subculture that I'm on the fence about. Not the figure/figma collecting perse - I was drooling over that Briarios you just got, wishing someone to Suddenly Acquire ME one!
I'll be honest - it's the panty shots. The big "eyes". The eroge. I mean, I'm a pervy girl and a feminist, so you can probably see where I'm scratching my head, trying to figure this out. Hentai and yaoi and the rest of it don't bother me, but... I end up wondering what you get out of the eroge and how your wife handles your collection/interest. Maybe for us nosy newbies (and this particular anthro major) you could do a post about how you got into the subculture, why you like it so much, how your wifey handles it (that is, if it's not too personal; I noticed she doesn't show up in any of the photos, so I completely understand if I'm overstepping my bounds as a guest.)

I suddenly (and I mean SUDDENLY) developed an obsession for anime figures in October of last year and in my searches for large, nice pictures and figure reviews, I found I kept bumping into this site time and again. Then I started clicking the links at the bottom of each article and kept reading and being linked (kind of like the YouTube "Related Videos" effect) and before I knew it hours had flown by. The more articles I read, the more I realized I'd probably bumped into this site many times in the past via Google, but hadn't bothered to see the rest of the site. Once I started reading about you, I realized YOU were the dancing Stormtrooper I'd seen videos about! Beyond the articles, I started reading reader responses and realized that many other blogs/bloggers I occasionally read all link here!
Although the figure pictures and reviews were what led me here (and I still really look forward to them), it was definitely the articles of the day to day life in Japan and the numerous events and experiences that keep me coming back. You have many neat, little anecdotes about experiences that are mundane to your average Japanese citizen and would go by unnoticed by him/her, but are interesting to people outside of Japan. Examples of this would be that Japanese hairdressers put a white cloth over your face out of shyness/politeness while washing your hair or that there is a certain way you have to give someone your name card so that you don't come across as rude (meishi). There are many subjects you cover that a native Japanese person would not think to write about or the articles would not come across in the same manner if written by someone who was not originally a foreigner and native English speaker. I know there are many people who blog about their vacation to Japan, but the significance of certain rituals and events are often lost on them since they are not well-versed in the language and culture, so you offer a very unique perspective. It's neat to see the inside exclusives as well (my favourites being the GSC and Max Factory tours). My only complaint is that I'm not a fan of the ecchi/eroge parts of the site (especially when I'm at school/work) and it takes a little bit of time to get used to the navigation.
The community is one of the nicest on the internet for such a large one and reading their responses is often as interesting as reading the initial post. I hope it stays this way!
tl;dr :
I love everything on the site except for the ecchi/eroge stuff. =^_^=

I don't really remember how I found your site. Maybe through google. The main reason why I stay here is because of you, Danny. You are a great man, Danny.

I found the site while looking for info about visiting Japan. I stuck around for all the great anime and figure updates. The only thing I think is missing from the site is a page where newcomers can clearly see the rules for posting as well as general information, such as how many comments you need to post until you can post your own news item. If such a page exists I haven't found it yet, and maybe it should be in an obvious spot.

It was a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon. I logged on to my Multiply account and checked the latest updates from my contacts. One update was about a site called "Dannychoo.com", a site that talks about Japan, anime, Gundams and other stuff that I have interest in. I clicked on the link and I was brought here to this site. At first I read through the Japan-related articles. Those were very informative. After a few days I started exploring more of the site. After a couple of months, I registered as a new user XD

Your site is perfect the way it is. I came here everyday because I am hooked to all those interesting articles found here. I found this site through Google when searching for stuffs about Japan. After my initial reading, I was hooked. Keep coming for more. Of course, I have no interest in figures and nendroids at first (Please don't hammer me). But now I do take interest in them! It is really nice to learn more about them. Nowadays, I actually read everything here. Well almost everything at least. >.< ^^, I guess I am just another DC addict! LOL

In reference to the poll,
I've stayed because I love Japan/stuff. Oh, and I will post in that damn blurb thing one day!
Ok, also when you sign up, there is mention of having a blog space via this site, like this site in set up and design too. I'd like that.
Yo.

I stayed on after your BoingBoing gig because I was Japanese in many previous lifetimes. That and because you are a damn entertaining read! And yeah, i dig the otaku stuff and the video camera on the sushi conveyor and the Tokyo walks and life in Japan (more food, please!)

I sayed on and got my other half interested because I enjoyed your writing on BB and we are both coming to Japan later this year and wanted to know as much as we can about it!
We like you style of writing and both log up to your RSS feed. I must say I find the site itself very hard to follow but the RSS means I get the posts and get to read all the interesting things you do.
I love the stuff about Japanese life and food and we are becoming hooked on Figma... so I guess we can blame you for that!!!
Thanks Danny keep it up!
Tags of some sort would be preferred, so I could then filter to make sure I could read from work.

I knew about the site, but deliberately didn`t join.
Here is the story:
You see, the site that got me started on anime was animes-bg.com... I really liked that site and so on and so on, but as years passed I realized that it just doesn`t suffice. There are a lot of trolls, flamers and such. Yes, links are present, but the community is pretty much poop. The news items are not related to Japan or Hobbies [figures, gunpla etc. etc.] but to CNN type of news, puberty advice and so on.
I was scared of change, but eventually decided to broaden my horizons and thus started reading bloggs and sites. Sankakucomplex helped me to realize that there is much more to the japanese culture than some site full of flamers and such.
And then it hit me. The world of DC. A marvelous community lead by a marvelous man. Although he has achieved so much, he still likes to share, give, if you will. I was charmed beyond words
I felt like a complete idiot for wasting my time on a helpless community full of retarded drunks brought up into a cult.
Danny, I absolutely love your Japan oriented posts. Its like seeing bits and pieces of a dream of mine, which remind me that with hard work, that dream can become reality. And you are the living poof of it.
I also love the love with which you write your posts and comments.
Will try to contribute as much as I can to this marvelous community ^_^
