HRP-4C

Saw a load of news over the Internets about this newly developed catwalk fashion model robot but didn't see any videos until today. I was expecting something completely different after reading about its "lifelike movements." Personally would rather have a Dollfie that moves on her own. What? What am I saying - they already *do* move on their own.

The robot name is HRP-4C and weighs in at 43 kilos and is 158cm tall. On one charge, she can move about for 20 mins.
She is also due to appear at Fashion Week which will be held in Tokyo from next Monday.

The makers say that they want to sell her in about a years time. Any takers?
Via Sankei.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

You know, using this technology for a real-life C3PO to show off at the next Star Wars convention seems like a much cooler idea.

They could install some text-to-speech with a custom C3PO voice, and stick a Megahal module in there or something (http://megahal.alioth.debian.org/) so it could talk to the people around it.

        Now that's science!

I think robots are actually cooler when they're more specialized and faceless. Once we perfect those then maybe we can start on something like this, a lot of companies try to focus on the human aspects too much. It's just not practical.

Also, I love Japanese news, they have the best music selection. First the ever classic "Mr. Roboto" by styxx, and then Daft Punk's "robot rock". Haha.

Hands need to be more relaxed, and her knees *not* constantly bent. Same goes with blank eyes - surely it isn't too hard to program her to blink every now and then?

My criticism really just lies with how it looks like a half-done job. If you're going to make it look human-like, then go all the way. And get rid of some that rectangular chunk of a waist and make it look realer.

If not, then stick to a mechanic robot deal, thanks.

*sigh* Well, I understand the idea that they have to test the technology part by part, but still.

I have to agree, rushing things never gets the job done.

There are a lot of things to fix here, naming them will take too long.

A rubber sex-doll like face isn`t going to manage you know.

And a fashion show? Just for the lolz?

*sigh* Would have been better off without knowing this. Maid robots are going to come sooner or later, but I don`t there is a need to show an unfinished product to the masses.

The sad part about this, is that the changes needed to make it lifelike aren't even huge changes. They put this out too early. Even a month more of hard work would have made a huge difference.

The eyes, for example. They half blink, but only while she 'talks'. They already have the code for blinking in her somewhere. SURELY they could make it blink more normally.

The hands, too. Even just, changing the angle of them so they aren't so stuck out would make a huge difference. It's a bunch of small details they could have easily fixed stopping this from being really, really impressive.

    Still, it's a step.

Note: after making several women the designer decided to make one that looks like himself.

HRP-4C walks quite good for a robot, but it's still not good enough. Another example of how well good robots are able to walk is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTlV0Y5yAww
It's a great engineering accomplishment, but... If you want a robot to actually do something reliably, put wheels on it and it will be able to work for you.
