A Week in Tokyo 27

Starting off the week with some Korean food with member Len Vesper.
Just thought that I'd mention that I have a load of figure samples - many of which are unboxed. At times, when I'm waiting for a stash of new samples, I end up giving readers some of my older (but in good condition) figures - do forgive me if you end up with an unboxed or older figure when we meet ^^;

While I don't get to meet everyone due to the schedule, do ping me if you are up for meets during your trip to Tokyo - my contact details in my profile page.

Figma Kagami is still my fave figma who I take with me everywhere.
Ah before I forget, site stats are now going to be posted as a News Item under "stats". So that I don't bore you to death every month, I will update you occasionally in the Week in Tokyo series.
September served just under 19 million page views (18,961,758) to an average of 90,829 unique daily users. The monthly unique users amounted to an accumulative total of 2.7 million visitors (2,724,893).Also, I need to get a better understanding of how many folks are using the feeds so will be playing with some header redirects and FeedBurner - let me know if you spot anything odd.
These numbers have gone down a bit since Aug where total page views were 2,016,7204 and users were 2,869,758. Most of this is due to me sending users to my flickr instead - wanted to offload traffic to flickr for a more stable server than trying to ramp up page views. Another reason why views are down a bit is because I'm not writing as much articles as before. Rather than churn out quantity, I want to take more time to deliver original photo articles - still stand by my earlier Quality over Quantity statement ^^
Learnings
1. I notice some folks reporting how many "hits" they get on their site and just thought I would clarify what a "hit" means. A hit is a single request to the server. So if a top page has 60 images and 1 CSS file, a single visit to that top page would get 62 hits including the actual HTML for that page - more definitions of "hit" here.
Folks who are looking for advertisers may want to consider publishing actual page views and unique users as advertisers are not interested in hits. My hits for September were 152 million (152,338,492) but that does not mean anything and I would only be embarrassing myself if I published that number ^^;
2. The "this time last year" feature has done really well since they started to appear in the feeds - great for new users (judging from the page views) but probably annoying for veteran readers - will look for a solution around this although I do notice many veterans going back to enjoy the new conversation.
3. The Alexa rank has taken a nosedive since Firefox 3 was released - looks like many IE6 users made the switch. Alexa is still mainly powered by software in old versions that came installed in Windows in IE6. Nearly 60% of dannychoo.com users are now on Firefox - stats here.
4. Got dannychoo.com banned by the adsense folks again ^^; Luckily I have comrades there and my account is now activated. Keywords such as "s-e-x", "breas-ts" etc are automatically detected by google and if there are spikes in traffic then the Google Adsense police come to see if there is anything fishy going on - ie adsense blocks on a page with ecchi content..
These particular words also affect the number of pages indexed by Google and affects Page Rank. This is one of the reasons why some of your posts go missing. Please use the standard words like "eyes" or "dolphin" or "health care time" etc if you need to describe these objects/actions ^^;
Notable referrers of the month were... And thanks to my sponsors And thanks to everybody else who drove traffic to the site. Will be implementing new sharing features to make it up to you.
Finally, thanks to you the reader and the great folks who participate in the community.

Living in Tokyo, not only do you get interesting experiences reading Engrish here n there, you also get to listen to it - this chap was singing in his best Engrish - the crowd around him oblivious to what he was actually saying.

Th Japanese still crazy about Krispy Kreme - a huge line (which I forgot to take a pic of) at this store. Example of a Krispy Kreme queue below.

Japan has Cold Stone too but the girls would burst out singing every now and then - very cute. Singing Cold Stone girls in your region too?

Spent a while deciding what I wanted because it all looked yummy. Been studying how more choice can at times confuse customers/users. This is one of the reasons why I had the portal redesign a while ago.

I think this is what I chose...

Which ended up looking like this. Which is sweeter - the dessert or Kagami?

The latest M Dee's goodies are chibi maruko-chan - anybody watch this? I usually watch it on TV while having din dins on Sunday evening.

Time for some yakiniku at Anrakutei. Its where you cook raw meat on the grill in the middle of the table. Do they serve this in your neck of the woods?
Do recommend you try it when in Japan.

I usually go for the egg soup, rice and a few plates of meat.

Many places in Japanese restaurants have these electronic bells which you use to call the waitress/waiter. If they had these in Hackney London then they would be all gone.

Fried ice cream type dessert.

One of my fave past times - office cleaning/figure dusting.

A raccoon (?) in a UFO catcher with its tail tied to the rack.

Picking up some evening dessert from the local supermarket.

Dead animals in a bag.

Lunch with Tsurya-san.

How are you liking the new season of Heroes? Heard some folks knocking it but I'm enjoying it. I hear its been difficult to get hold of a recording from friends?

Nendo puchi Haruhi is soo sweet.

Spring rolls at the Chinese place round the corner.

Some Macross Ace Frontier for your PSP anyone?

Din dins at home.

Lunch with Kagami - 880 yen.

As each year passes, I notice Halloween being celebrated more n more. Actually the word I should use is "monetized." As with Christmas, Halloween is another event that people spend money on without knowing the true meaning.
I'll be staying at home this Halloween but know that a load of gaijin will be out n about > Gaijin...

The lovely Melody and her new album.

Wherever you go in Tokyo, you will always find part timers handing out leaflets for contact lenses. Most Japanese people I know use contacts. Have not really asked the reasoning of their personal preference to contacts over glasses.
I tried (green) contacts as a teenager but never got used to them - probably because contacts for folks who have Astigmatism didn't exist back then.
I choose not to wear contacts today because I don't think I could be bothered with all the hassle of maintaining them. I know that they sell the one day disposable contacts but still.
A relative told me a horror story about how one of her friends had a contact go to the back of her eyeball - she had to have an operation to get it out. I think thats another reason why I want to stay away too ^^;
Besides, glasses don't look that bad at all. They are annoying sometimes especially when doing sports (sky diving/ swimming) or cosplaying as Vader (they steam up), but find them easy to maintain over contacts.
Do you prefer glasses or contacts and why?
Oh and I really dislike ads like the one below taking the mickey of out girls wearing glasses - girls with glasses are gorgeous!

Afternoon tea with Foxkeh.

Evening in the lounge with some Kemeko manga reading, TV and a few warm beverages.

The kewpie worm baby.

Some Tai Yaki after an evening stroll - 150 yen.

Mentioned in my British Embassy Tokyo news item - trying to figure out why the British Ambassador David Warren wants to have lunch with me.

This mornings desk.

Hectors desk - also full O figures ^^;

Out n about in Shibuya.

Meeting at iKnow.co.jp.

The iPod Touch box makes a great case for a figma. Speaking of Apple - cant wait to hear what new laptop they are going to announce tomorrow.

New dashboard figure Asakura replaces the Tropical Dom.

And take a look at more pics of this lovely lass over at the GSC site - just gorgeous.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Go check out Mitsuwa market in Edgewater, NJ. There's a shop in eatery area that sells them, along with obanyaki. Yum.
The whole shopping center is worth a visit if you like Japanese anything; me and my sister visit there every now then from Maryland/Nothern Va.

Yes I agree with BA on this part, you always do have lots of food pics. You sure do eat out alot hehe.
Oh and BA I also want some Taiyaki. Last time I had one was ages ago.

I wholeheartedly agree. Food (item) of the week would be phenomenal! The foods look delicious and makes me realize how much I really miss good curry. haha. Actually, I miss eating at Matsuya and Pepper Lunch. Do you like any of the food from there Danny?

I tried Taiyaki when I was in Japan, it's yummy, but pretty sickly. Couldn't eat more than 1 in a sitting.

Lots of yummy food!!
Contacts aren't that bad, from my friends that wear them. It just sounds gross when they go in the undesired areas. But if I had the choice, definitely glasses. Too much hassle to put contacts on.

I have both, but have got used to contacts. I stick to wearing my glasses at night when I get home. Sometimes, like if I am running late in the morning, I will use my glasses. The main reason I got contacts was for the summer because of sports (tennis, mostly) and sometimes I have to work in a walk-in freezer or refrigerator. Condensation = Not fun.

YES! Girls with glasses FTW. I prefer wearing glasses myself as the one time I tried wearing contacts, my eyes ended up feeling irritated after only half a day. Tai Yaki looks good. Oh and we got them cold stone creamery here too, only I think they're called "cold rock" instead. No singing girls though.

They have Foxkeh plushies!? I need one, pronto!
Ah yes, I remember watching chibi maruko-chan when I was a wee child, even though I had no clue what any of the characters were saying. One of our local channels showed it every week.
We need more glasses love! I've never used contacts(I don't think my eyes are qualified to anyway) but my sister does. She had a friend who forgot to take out her contacts and went to bed with them, and they ended up rolling to the back of her eyes. Her friend never had an operation because her eyes felt fine, but the contacts never appeared again either. I have no clue how that works. O_o

i remember going to great yakiniku places in japan. but i do prefer the buffet styles there so i can go all out on that meat. great stuff when you're starving. not too many in san diego, but there are some good korean bbq buffets where you just get the raw meat buffet style and cook it at your table. greeeeat stuff... mmm..

1. Cold Stone folks sing when you tip them, here...
2. Kagami is sweeter, but ice cream is so good... ^^
3. Watched Chibi Maruko when I was a teenager. Didn't realize they were still making shows.
4. Table grilling is fun. ^^
5 and 6. Haven't watched the new season of Heroes (wait for DVD). Don't have a PSP.
7. I like glasses. They're more comfortable on my face. Plus, I have sensitive eyes. I've tried contacts in the past, and I could always feel them. >.<

Chibi Maruko-chan! I watched it a lot last summer in China - so cute and funny. There's a live action for it and the actors are casted PERFECTLY. And the ending song is one of my favorites. "Pichara, pichara~"
I didn't vote, since both have their perks. With contacts there's a variety of different colors and are more convenient, but I do have a megane fetish. ^^ I have 20/20 vision (thankfully), but I often wear contacts for cosplay. One time at a con I thought I "lost" a contact, but the next day when I was taking a shower it came out of my eye. Turns out it went into the back of my eyeball. I never felt it and nothing was damaged thankfully, although I did waste $60 since I threw away my other one after "losing" that one.

I wear my contacts when I'm out and about... unless the air is very dry.
Whenever I'm at home or just picking up groceries or something I normally just go with glasses simply as I'm too lazy to put contacts in. I'd say nowadays I wear glasses more often than contacts.
Went to try yakiniku at an all-you-can-eat place today; but just missed the lunch time price and couldn't bear the fact that it almost doubled for dinner... will try again tomorrow methinks.

Enjoy reading Kemeko DX, I love it's randomness. Apart from that, the taiyaki looks delicious. It's getting cold. I should stop by Japantown and get one. :)
Apart from that, do you know where to buy the Foxkeh plushie? I can't find any on their site. ;_;

Woot this is my favorite series (along with your Tokyo time line) on DC.com. Wow, never realized Krispy Kreme was so popular in Japan. The hype died down a lot here from the initial fad in the US, although it still gets impressive lines during weekends in the early mornings and evenings. Personally, I find the stuff way too sweet to the point of sickening. >_<

In Halloween's defense, much like Valentine's Day it hasn't had much of a meaning anywhere in the world for a goodly number of centuries. Largely they're both excuses to sell large amounts of candy and decorations and have a little fun. Any non-commercial reasons have long been abandoned, so it's best not to dwell on it and just have a good time with it!

About glasses, I don't mind them. Not in a girl, and not using them too.
Probably because I don't have to use them all the time... my glasses are for computer usage and driving at night mainly.
But I don't mind how I look with them, and I also think it's probably less unconfortable than lens.
Anyways, nice pics and food! :D I LOVE those desserts you can buy at local markets... I'd be way poor and fatter if I lived in Japan... those desserts made me crazy while I was in Japan. :P

I still haven't been to Japan, but what people really should start doing is organizing mass DC Japan trips. ^^; We can all go at once and travel around or something. Money issues aside, the fact that if I do I'd be travelling alone is a bit of a deterrant. And if we all choose the same time Danny would probably have less problems with scheduling. :P
I wear glasses only - like you, Danny, I always found the thought of putting things in my eyes a bit discomforting. Not to mention how easy to maintain they are - they also keep snow and ice away from your eyes in the winter. Good stuff. ^^;
I didn't know Apple was going to announce something tomorrow. Now I'm really excited as well. And isn't chibi maruko-chan...really, really old? The last I saw her - or at least I think it's her - was when I lived back in HK a decade ago.

It's funny to see franchises like Krispy Kreme and Cold Stone are really popular in Japan and around my area, they are not as crowded as they are in Japan. In fact, I haven't gone to either places for years now for the reason I can't explain. I'm surprised they opened Cold Stone in Japan since I don't think it will well during the cold winter in Japan while they do decent in Los Angeles area since here we have same weather all year-long o_O

Only one of me eyes has astigmatism. Imagine the horror when it comes to getting contact lens. The difference in price makes me want to puke blood at times >.<
Initially I thought that maintaining contact lens shouldn't be a problem but as times goes by, I thought otherwise. It is a hassle (biweekly lens) and now I'm getting dailies in the event that I need them for events such as basketball, soccer etc.

Cold Stone? Never heard of it. But I do like ice cream. I wish they had a store here too.
The resto "Anrakutei" you mentioned sounds just like the resto "Tempura" here. Obviously, it's Japanese and the customer is given the choice whether he/she wants to cook the food by himself/herself or if he/she wants to food cooked by the chefs. I love eating there since I find their Tempura cooked just right (not too oily too since oily foods makes me loose my appetite quickly and gives me headaches)
We don't celebrate Halloween like how people in the West do. Usually we go and visit our dead relatives in the cemetery. This is why you'll see a lot of people in the cemetery. Inside there will be food stalls put up for all the people visiting. Some would stay there overnight.

Krispy Kreme is uberly sweet!! Didn't like the ones I got from the Shibuya outlet.
Heh. I prefer contacts but I wear my specs more often. My eyes seem to reject my contacts and I end up getting blurry vision, dry eyes, yada yada, so it's kinda of a hassle to wear contacts. But I look better in contacts! Also, my specs keeps sliding down cause I perspire significantly and always having to push my specs up is irritating.
Do most Japanese have perfect eyesight or it's just that all of them wear contacts??

I just noticed, your week in Tokyo post always starts off with food... I could be wrong though, need to check later... You make me hungry Danny!>:( LOL
I want to listen to them singing in Engrish! It's change from the usual music I hear around me...
I've never heard of Cold Stone before... But after searching on the net, I found there is an outlet here... Must check it out! The ice cream looks yummy!
And btween the dessert and Kagami, I choose Kagami LOL
LOL Raccoons with their tails tied?! Seems taht Singapore isn't the only place with scam prizes LOL j/k!
Melody looks yummy... Very sdeuctive looking...
Talking about contacts, I remembered there was this anime about this girl talkng about her losing her contacts and sh believed her contacts went to top of her eyeball... In the end they found the contacts somewhere else and not in her eye sockets LOL
I believe girls with spectacles are cute!
MEGANE FTW!
Tai Yaki! I want to try! Seeing Ayu in Kanon munching on them makes me say "So cute!"!
Another awesome weeks it seems, I'm still wondering why British Ambassador David Warren want to have lunch with you... Hmm... I don't think it's anything bad though... Maybe he just turned in an otaku and wants your opinion on what figure to buy? LOL Impossible...

I tried contacts because glasses can be a bother in some occasions as Danny said, but could never get used to them... my right eye always felt like there was something on it, and was tearing up and made me want to rub my eyes (a no-no when using contacts).
A lot of work and my first eye Dr. gave me the wrong prescriptions (too strong, I couldn't take all the light) so I'll try to get another exam in another place.

The only problem I have with glasses is losing them since I don't always wear them 24/7. But otherwise, they're much better than contacts. The advert making them look uncool kind of annoyed me a little.

I once (actually twice) tried contact lenses. After a while I could get them in quite fast, but it became a pain in the ass. Also thinking that contacts on a tired eye is not good. And I'm not very awake in the morning ;p Now I just do it for very special occasions. And also, I'm so used to wearing glasses I don't even feel them anymore, they've become a part of my face (so to say ;p).

I go both ways...glasses and contacts that is. I usually wear glasses when I'm feeling lazy. Contacts are fine but my eyes tend to dry out when wearing them so I take them off when I get home.
Maybe Japanese prefer contacts simply because they think they look better without glasses.

Eyeglasses all the way. What if theres a fire or toxic gas? Wouldn't be too fun pulling those contact off your eyes as they melt on to them.
Personally, I wear glasses. I bought a pair of Nike glasses that you can crumple up and they pop back into place. Also, they don't slide of your head even in heavy tropical weather.
Also, I do recommend yakiniku while in Japan. Though, don't do what some others do and expect to get full on just beef. Order some rice or soup with you meal, saves on the cost and you will leave full and happy.
Tried Coldstone once will in Yokohama Minato Mirai. The girls were really cute and were singing quite often. Plus, the icecream was really good. Recommended if you see one.

The clerks SING at your local Cold Stone? o.o I'm glad to know that my favorite ice cream chain exists in Japan, but really? That's awesome!
I might get contacts just for cosplaying, but I don't think they're worth the trouble for day to day. Especially since contacts for an astigmatism cost more than normal correction. Oh, and let's not forget the fact that my mom and I are both apparently mutants; we have too many tear ducts, which wick moisture away from the eye, leaving the eyes abnormally dry. Not good conditions for comfortable contact wearing.

I prefer glasses because I have been wearing them since kindergarten (15 years). I can't get used to the feeling of seeing clearly without having something on my face. looking at this post makes me hungry -_-!
and its really along queue ( Krispy Kreme ) o.O
I find the popularity of Krispy Kreme to be very amusing. Around my work there is a gas station that gets fresh Krispy Kremes every morning. And more often than not, they are are still there when i leave in the afternoon or evening. They are just ordinary commercial donuts! Isn't funny how something so normal can be marketed in a way to make everyone in Tokyo think its something so special. I follow the TokyoCooney vlog and he covered Krispy Kreme one year after its opening in Kapan and the line was still 2 hours long. Thats insanity...mass madness you maniacs! Hahaha
I wear contacts currently, but i don't mind glasses. Its just to get a nice pair is rather expensive. And i also had a contact roll into the back of my eye...twice . In both cases it came out during that night while i was sleeping. Years ago i may not have ventured to contacts, but with improvements over the years, i find it very easy to change and maintain them. Also you can add various effects to your eyes if you so desire.

Spectacles wearer here. I have never tried contacts so I can't tell much for the differences but contacts do seem to be tedious to maintain since you have to keep putting it in and off your eye everyday.
P/S: I have astigmatism too but =p
Student
I really dont care one way or another what other people choose to use but I myself use contacts all the time when Im not home. Think the major reason is that I had to start using glasses quite late and never got used to using glasses while doing something, but its fine at home since I just mainly stare at either TV or monitor :)
I also think contacts arent that much of a hassle to use. I just put them on in the morning (after a couple of weeks practice that takes like 5 seconds) and in the evening I just put them back in the container, takes 10 seconds since I have to fill the container with liquid. And with good quality contacts you wont even notice youre wearing them (except that you actually see stuff) and have had absolutely 0 problems after I just found the brand that suits me.
Also it feels like glasses need more maintenance than contact lenses, I always manage to get finger marks on the lenses :P

I actually like the new episodes of Heroes, won't spoil it for you guys who havnt watched it but I wasn't too happy with ep 5 haha. Personally I only wear glasses when I need to like when i'm in class, don't like contacts because I don't like touching my eyes lol. Astigmatism sucks doesn't it...
occuwhat?
Well, i wear both. Glasses at the night and contacts during the day. I wear contacts because i like to use sunglasses when is sunny, and in Portugal it means 70% of the year, and because contacts are quite in keeping my eyes dioptre low. And i have both asthygmatism and myopia, so it's win/win.
Pianist
I have 20/20 at worst (last time my eyesight was checked, the doctor merely said it was "good/very good", when I had a physical for a trip they said I had 20/19 and that was on a bad day for me). I might have partial red-green color blindness, but it's very minimal...the most inconvenient thing is playing PSO since the colors for players 2 and 3 look pretty much identical to me.
On another note, I am thinking of cosplaying as a character with a different eye color who also wears glasses...I have no idea where to get contacts to change my eye color and fake glasses that match the character and do not have any eyesight correction.

I think contact getting stuck behind the eye story is an urban legend. My eye doctor mentioned it once to me, I have also lost my contacts in my eye before they sometime fold in on themselves but they fall out after some blinking. Cold stone is enjoyable every once in a while ,I like the strawberry bananas and yellow cake myself, but the ice cream is not that great. There is this one chain in NJ http://www.applegatefarm.com/ that has the best ice cream ever. I should go get some later.
