The new iPod Shuffle details are up at Apple - this time they've gone and removed all the controls. Would fit nicely in my Stormtrooper helmet ^^;

Apple introduces NEW 4GB iPod Shuffle in Black and Silver!
Apple store updated!

Via Macrumors.com

Apple released two new iPod Shuffles with an even smaller design today. The updates were predicted at the very last minute this morning.

The new 4GB devices are priced at $79 and can hold up to 1000 songs. These new iPod Shuffles adopt a more vertical shape than the previous model, but are smaller overall. The previous generation iPod shuffles remain available for purchase.

Apple also added a new "VoiceOver" feature that allows the iPod shuffle to speak your sing titles, arists and playlist names. All of the controls are located on the earphone cord.

"Imagine your music player talking to you, telling you your song titles, artists and playlist names," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPod and iPhone(TM) Product Marketing. "The amazingly small new iPod shuffle takes a revolutionary approach to how you listen to your music by talking to you, also making it the first iPod shuffle with playlists."
Using the VoiceOver feature, the new Shuffle allows you to pick a choose between different playlists. More details are available on Apple's iPod Shuffle section of their website. They also provide a Guided Tour video (direct QuickTime link) that walks through the new features.

It retails at USD 79 / SGD 128.

Just realized upon watching the video that you'll be tied to using the Apple stock earphones as the controls are on it and not the player. Not very ideal for audiophiles who want to use their own earpieces.

Any of you folks gonna grab it? ^_^

I guess I'm one of those audiophiles. I hate the sound the Ipod earbuds produce. Anyway, I just got an itouch recently, so I don't really need one. However, it would have been interesting for my running workouts.

Seen your post about not jailbreaking the iPod Touch cause of sending it to Apple for repairs and all that..

Question, do you break stuff all the time? Seems like your kind of clumsy from the posts you had..

The sound quality of the stock earphones it has are pretty decent, also.. I handle my stuff with extreme care, I still have a 13 year old working PSX in the closet upstairs..

The only time I ever busted something was when I got impatient with how long the partitioning of my hard drive was taking and decided to push the reset button, it died because of that..

As raptor cZn said, it doesn't really matter what iPod you have as they all have the same equalizer settings. Also sadly enough you can't adjust the equalizer manually :( IF you want bass, what I could recommend is getting SkullCandy in ear headphones. They're not the greatest sounding things out there generally speaking, but the bass really rattles your head... :p

That's sort of cheating. xD "It's tiny, because we got rid of the controls on the thing and put it on the earphones."

You're right, audiophiles aren't going to like it, but then again they probably wouldn't get a Shuffle to start with. And I'll pass on the whole it-talks-to-me thing. I assume it reads the artists and titles in an artificial voice, and unless it's decent it's just going to be annoying.

I also highly doubt it reads Japanese.

I'm sure within a week some company will release some cable with controls on it- one side will plug into the iPod, the other will let you plug in whatever headphones you want... Probably won't cost more then 10-20 bucks either.

But yeah, being locked into Apple's proprietary headphones - at-least for now, is quite a kick in the balls on their part...

I can only agree since Sony has been doing it longer and focuses more on durability. Best for those who do a lot of physical activity.

An iPod is only for those who want what Sony cannot offer, such as watching movies when they are not listening to music... or playing games... and so on. That, and it is also best for those who need something easy to use as well.

      In other words...

For those who need something durable, only plays music, and gives great sound... Sony is the way to go. For those who want to see movies, see album covers, play games, and/or have something easy to us... Apple is the way to go.

Which is why I am with you on this. If I cannot get an iPod, I would go with Sony. (And this is also why I plan to go mainly with both Apple and Sony when I purchase new electronics for my next place.)

I do not quite agree, because I have sony NWZ - A828 and it's great for listening to the music and as great for watching movies. One of my friends recently bought and iPod classic with 2,5" screen, while my sony has 2,4" screen, and I have to admit, that the picture size is the same for the movies, but the quality of picture is better on the sony. Also as you said sony concentrates on the main task, in this case it's playback music and video, and sony has done a great job on achieving high quality, while apple concentrates on the extras, so that it has got lots of things, but at the same time it lacks the perfection in audio and video quality which sony has got.

But that is you and not the average audiophile or electronics otaku. They tend to prefer durability and content over how many years they can get out of it. Apple focuses more on them and those who want more than just a mp3 player than those who just want to play music and nothing else.

Besides, the average user tends to replace their mp3 players every 1-2 years, or until something they prefer more is coming their way. The same goes with cell phones, which is why there are always deals when you choose 2 years. Then again, a mid-ranged cellphone tends to last 1.5-3 years, depending on use.

Then again, you must take good care of your mp3 player... While I used my first gen iPod nano like crazy.

Interesting, but two thoughts come to mind:
-forcing people to use the proprietary Apple earphones is a horrible idea. IMO, they have bad audio quality and aren't very durable at all.
-what if the song titles, artists, etc. aren't in English, but in another language like Japanese or Chinese?

Meh. Nasty proprietary earphones that will have to be replaced by something better -- but something by definition licensed by Apple. Just another way for them to soak up more money. I own an i-touch, so I guess I can't complain too much, but I am really, really tired of Apple's endless barrage of proprietary gadgets -- most of which are designed to be obsolete within a year. Stop the waste! Save our planet a tiny bit at a time and stick with the i-pod you have.

I understand they're trying to compensate for a screen but I don't think it's very feasible substitute. Especially when you consider you're most likely to become annoyed with the voice over quickly. Unless it's smexy... or maybe give us some options to change/modify it... that would be interesting.

Control is everything too, I can't believe they didn't put regular buttons on it.

I had the first-gen Shuffle. No screens suck, but knowing what songs are loaded in it I could care less; just pressing Next a few times until it gets to the song I want to listen usually does the trick. I can't say the same if there's more than half a thousand songs on the player (my desktop audio playlist sits at nearly 1300), no buttons to push, and a requirement to use non-standard headphones or through a dongle.

looks nice for running/exercising, bad part is if you end up on a song you don't want to listen to, you'll have to shout out the command for new song or something. would be cool if the mic picked up someone's shout, would make it convenient if you're able to shout. would suck if others decided to mess around and shout out random commands too.

The Shuffle is only useful for those who work out, jog, run, or do anything that makes it hard to change songs on a regular iPod.

The problem is that I do not run, jog, or even do stuff that prohibits me from changing songs. I also require an iPod that lets me watch anime (in mp4 format) as well as know what songs are playing.

Hence the fact that I require either a classic, nano, or touch... and not a shuffle.

I'm certain this is going to be a hot item for Christmas 2009. Now if only the shuffles had a little screen to list the song titles.

I think that the new ipod shuffle is getting better, though I'm a fan and owner of the nano series. The headphones that come with it are standard and break over a short period of time. Mine are SONY brand and they are just breaking today, but it lasted almost the longest of the tens of ones I've bought.

nice size but I prefer the last generation with the clip thing since it's great for jogging and no worries of not having pockets...I dun wanna bend over if my ipod suddenly plops out :(

Still, I might pick up one since the touch isnt really nice for running around

Won't be getting this since I already own an iTouch

Shuffles are too overpriced anyways. Most expensive iPod for the amount of memory it has.

Shuffle to iPods is what Mac Mini is to Macs. Overpriced, underpowered and made only for the people who either can't afford the mainstream model or who would rather pay 2x more for it being slightly smaller then the competition.

Well... yes and no... I mean technically you can plug in any headphones you want... problem is that the controls are on the headphones themselves so you can only control the iPod via the headphones that come with the iPod.

But I'm sure you'll see tons of 3rd party headphones within a week...

hmm, small & buttonless... like a usb stick. apple downgraded to that?

sure, it looks cool, but it's easy to lose, and definitely fragile... i might see one lying around looking for its owner one of these days.
