7pm in Tokyo - Shotengai

At our local Sushi place in the Shotengai [商店街]. A Shotengai is usually a street which has a concentration of shops and restaurants located near a train station. A shotengai typically includes:-
* supermarkets and grocery shops
* restaurants, cafés and kissaten
* izakaya and snacks (Japanese style bars frequented by men and usually staffed by women)
* pachinko parlors
* massage parlors
* barber shops
* game centers
* post offices
* book shops
* clothes shops
* convenience stores
* koban (police boxes)
The above copy and pasted from Wikipedia and describes my local shotengai exactly - even the picture on that Wikipedia is of our local Shotengai ^^;

And this is what we had. Mmmmm. I'll start with the Mikuru *dips her in soy sauce*

And then its a stroll down the shotengai to check out the local stores.

    Food looks nice, but so raw....I've never really had sushi or anything like that, cuz I'm kinda afraid it's not good to eat it that way. Or am I just overly cautious?

      this aint a pleasant comment evil king, but when i went to japan it was coming from china where i got a serious stomach infection that really messed me up. When i got to the first sushi and sashimi places i worried if eating raw fish would screw me even worse but knowing that i would stay in japan just for 5 days i went anyways. I gotta tell u that my stomach was cured by the 2 day!

      Of course i went a local sashimi place here in mexico and the infection came back.

      Learning? Eat where it's safe clean and professional.

        Wow, from bad stomach to cure in 2 days; so maybe properly prepared raw fish even has health benefits? I'll keep that in mind in case I ever go to some place over here.

        as what i understand, eating the wasabi and daikon (white radish) actually helps dis-infect any germs and viruses.

        and of course, cleanliness is another thing.
        and i got to give the thumbs up for japanese sushi and sashimi as i can see from the faces of the chef that prepared my meal when i was there, that he was really heart and soul into preparing my meal. gochisousama deshita!!

        We have sushi places in Sofia, quite a good lot of them too, and quite unexpected at that. Specialized restaurants etc. etc. We even have those little boxes you mentioned.

        But the Miso Soup here tastes pretty much like poop (a bad restaurant perhaps?).

    Ooooo shops...... can't be dealing with the fish eggs though.... looks horrible...

    Not many shotengai-type streets that I know of in the UK. They're usually away from shops... although I'm thinking of bigger stations I spose... Apart from some in London... the st Pancras one has a whole-mini mall thing connected to it lol.

    This thread just makes me miss everything I loved about living in Japan. Sushi in Japan is a totally superior experience to anywhere else you can eat it on the whole planet. The water, land, the air, the flavor are all geographical/native things that can't be duplicated. You have to be there. That plate of sushi looks amazing, just needs some Unagi.

    Nice trip down memory lane.

    Danny, I don't get to have Mikuru with my sushi >_<! Anyways,that sushi does look nice but seeing how I have sushi/bento boxes every week, I think I cqan wait till Friday. I am happy that there is a nice little Japanese restaurant called I-ZU about 15 minutes away from home. The only other source for sushi is from my grocery and while it is nice to have sushi closer to home, it doesn't taste anywhere nearly as good as I-ZU's.

      That there be Ikura, or salmon roe. Has a stronger salty flavor to it, and I personally love it, but some PPL can't handle it at all. My general outlook to sushi is to try everything, and if you don't like it, give it another go at a nicer place(of if you're having it at a fairly upscale, nice place already, then you probably really don't like it).

      There's only been a few items I've decided I didn't like, and it's more of a "didn't like it much" rather than a "homg, what did I just eat..." reaction.

      IMO, there's too many interesting things to try in life to not give them a go. That's not to say you should go all Jim Carrey, "Yes Man" on everything, but having an open mind and trying new stuff isn't all that bad.
