A Majikon [マジコン] is the word used to refer to devices that allow you to play opensource/homebrew games on a games machine - like the AceKard2.

Up until a while ago, one could do a search on Yahoo auction and come up with a load of results for these devices - until Yahoo put a ban on them.
However, traders have found an interesting way of getting around this - which only ended up working for a while.

These Majikon devices were listed under the name of "3777788". On a Japanese mobile keypad, these numbers represent letters:-

3 = D
7777 (7 pressed 4 times) = S
8 = T
8 = T

Which gets you DSTT = http://www.ndstt.com/

But it looks like somebody went and reported this to Yahoo and the search for 3777788 turns up zilch.
Via N Style.

Been using the AceKard2 to play homebrew games from my friend in Germany - been working extremely well so far.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

    Meh to the DSTT I say.... if I want a game enough, I would buy it. I like owning them. Like anime, heck, I'd buy it if it was released over here or even america.... But its more fuss to order from Japan...

        Well they do have legitimate uses for people that own a lot of games. I rip all my DS games so I don't have to keep swapping them out. Ditto for my PSP and PC games as well as my DVDs, it's just far more convenient.

        Homebrew's cool as well but I don't use it that much tbh.

    I've heard of devices like that many times before, but I've never used 'em myself. I've seen some nifty homebrew games that might make it worth it, I suppose, but mostly I hear them talked about so folks can pirate games xD; Remember, kids! Always buy your DS games legitimately; better sales mean companies are more likely to spend the dough in order to localize more titles...! At least, that's what I tell myself, being I love weird games like nobody's business =w=

    Still, that "3777788" business; crafty! Wonder if they'll come up with a new code in order to bend the rules? *detective hat* A mysterious mystery!

      The PS3 allows for independent developers via the PSN, I believe. But since the hardware's so much more difficult to program for most people wind up going with the Wii or the 360 for making homebrew stuff.

      It hasn't been cracked yet, about all they've managed is java games using the Blu Ray java support tho I think that then got closed. Tho Linux on it lets you do quite a bit.

      I just want them to get rid of the ps1/ps2 region locking

    I enjoy my M3Real Card very much. I do plan on buying games that I like, but only to support the companies that make them. I most likely will just give the game away to a friend after I buy it ^^I Its easier to have 1 card that has all my games on it than carry around 20 carts. Plus using one of these cards uses up less power (depending on brand), than playing the original cart.

    You do realize that not this is the way, don`t you.

    Will take for example the Ikki Tousen game for the PSP.

    The game is horrible. I can rant on it for hours.

    The point is that if I spent 30$ or 50$ for it I would have been furious.

    The quality of portable console games has gone down significantly over the past years, with, of course, a few exceptions (Dissidia Fantasy etc. etc.) for which I would be glad to give money, the same way I gave money for RE4, KH, KH2 etc. etc.

    I, for one, will not give money for games I find as an uterly disgusting attempt to make some spare change.

    But people with no orientation for the market will.

    Yesterday I went to my local games store and took a look of the xbox 360 games. Madness followed. . . Golf = 60$ Bioshock = 60$.

    What would you think a person with no orientation for the market do if he had to choose between the two? Buy the Golf game of course because its all green and pretty.
    Yes,and while you are at it, why not buy some wii sports for the price of RE4, a Tennis game or two for the price of DMC? Fallout, Final Fantasy, examples are numerous, so are casualties.

    If this continues every single studio will start making Ikki_Yousen_for_PSP type of high quality games with a great story and character design.

    Hardcore gaming is what rises the lever and thus quality of production.

    Sure a kid can have some fun with a Golf game and I find nothing wrong with that, but for the love of god, don`t put them on the same level as HardCore games.

    My point being: we will not give money for shi*t as we can make that ourselves...

    Don`t expect things to be fair, as they never are.

    Raise quality, grab a hold of your selves, stop slacking off and then expect people to buy your poo.

        Well, but even different review sites offer different opinions on games. Some critics might rate a game good while others bad. Though there are some games where the ratings are pretty consistent among review sites.

    I have one of the old super cards, it still works so I never really felt the need to update it. Plus I don't really play games much anymore. :(

    I would say despite the gajillions of "open source games" on my computer (some literally open source) I probably still play the hard copies the most. It might be the nostalgia factor. Not sure... I hate to admit I've reached that level but I suppose it's true.
