Japanese Rice

Moe saves the day and makes rice so much more fun to eat. The packaging for this 1kg packet of rice is decorated in illustrations by Tsudotei. Full illustration below. Cute!

Little window for folks to check the rice inside (edited after crazy misinterpretations of previous English @.@)

4 Koma on the back to read while waiting for the rice to cook.

Not only is the rice actually edible - you get a load of goodies with it too!

1 packet of rice with goodies costs 2,000 yen.

A bag to carry your heavy books to school.

More entertaining reading material to look at while eating.

And this is what the rice looks like cooked. Yummy.

After the Dakimakura, I'll be looking to make some Mirai Rice then?

I used the currency converter to find out how much that was and it turns out it's almost as much for that one bag of rice in Japan as it was for my entire food bill for the rest of this week in the UK (around £15)! The goodies are nice collectors' items but that's pretty steep! Either that or I'm just a cheapskate with my food...

That's the first "doujin rice" ever sold. The rice type is "Akita Komachi" (hence the pun).
The circle is Tsudoitei (http://tsudoitei.web.fc2.com/) and was sold in Reitaisai 6 (Touhou only convention). Is available at D-Stage and Toranoana, too.

With rice coming out like this, I wonder if they plan to make a special limited edition pack of rice. You know, the kind that comes in a special packaging with loads of extra goodies. It's a silly idea, but I can see it happening. Don't you think?

touhou rice lol. 2000yen for that small pack, expensive. I'd buy it for just the goodies inside
The rice here costs about $75? for like 20kg. Which is like 235yen/kg.
The added goodies inside plus the package design raises the price to nearly 9x more than the plain designed package.

this article reminded me of something that a friend mentioned to me, maybe someone knows for sure but there's a brand of rice sold in japan that is not exported but is considered the best rice in the world. anyone know if there's any truth to that? and if so is it because there no market for it outside the country or is it just illegal. like how Cuban cigars are illegal in the states.
