New User Conversion

Just rolled out code for an experimental Catfish nav menu that sticks to the bottom of the browser which should not shudder or jump about when you scroll - lemme know if it does.
The reason its called "Catfish" is because it sucks to the bottom of the browser - like you see the common catfish do on the bus on the way to school.

Apart from content, its also important to work on converting new visitors to the site. One has about 3 seconds to convince new users to stay on after they land through a referral or search engine.

Just imagine you was plopped in the middle of Monument Valley in Arizona. You know that you want to get to New York but don't see any maps or guides to help. The Catfish nav menu is mainly designed to help new users and highlights the main areas that I want them to discover.
I've just rolled it out and notice that new users are already using it to navigate to areas rich in original content. Right now, the 3 most clicked on items are in the following order.
Japan
Figures
About
And I just noticed the views of my Japanese profile page go through the roof!
This is perfect - Just according to keikaku ^^;

Will be continuing to observe user behavior and will reflect observations into the design and execution of the Catfish nav menu.

The height is 100px and the reason why its thumbnails is because it gives users more info on what they are clicking on and increases conversion rate - this is why the header always had thumbnails previously.
But I got rid of the thumbnails mainly due to the fact that current users hardly used the top navigation but affected conversion for new users - now I have the best of both worlds ^^

Current users who know their way around can either hide the menu once by clicking "Close Once" and you can also hide it forever by clicking "Close forever and ever."
The setting is cookie based so if you clear your cookies after each session then stop looking at pr0n sites so that you don't have to!
If you want to see the menu again - you can reset it from the secret menu at the top. I don't really expect current users to use it though as you should know your way around by now.

I have done QA on Mac Safari4/FF and Windows IE7/FF/Safari4. Did not bother with IE6. If the settings don't save for you then lemme know your browser type and or post screen shots of your problem and I will look into it.

And for the folks who cant stand the UI - use the RSS feed or subscribe to get updates in your inbox by email instead.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Otaku category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

It's a nice feature Danny. Now all you need is to customize it with otaku goodness. Lets say... Mirai-chan half naked? XP

Closed for ever and ever, since I come back every day anyway ^__^ I really like the feature anyway, great for getting people to click and see whats on offer.

Only gripe I had was it looked really big, felt like it was taking up most of my screen. Sort of intrusive.

I agree, if it were only about the height of the dannychoo logo at the bottom of the screenshot, I might have left it up, but as it is, it blocks a large part of the content. I don't really want to have to be constantly scrolling while reading posts.

Which version of IE? If you are on IE6, its time to upgrade to IE7 or IE8 RC. Or you could switch to another browser, but in my experience, for light browsing, there really isn't any difference between the latest generation of browsers. Its only when you really want to customize your browsing experience where IE begins to falter.

Since I am not a new user to your site, I will opt for 'Close forever...". I do see the merits for having it, but it does take lot of space if one has a small monitor. The catfish reminds me of the navigation bars back in late 90's - I remember creating such sites back then.

Hmm...if I were new it might be good, but any one other than a person visiting for the first or second time would probably do well to close it. It takes up a lot of room, lags, and to be honest it makes the page look crowded. ^^; More grey at the bottom = almost no white on the page.

Of course, bear in mind that I use the long-time user portal, which has Danny's News on the orange bar. I imagine it'd look much less cluttered with the Newbie portal, which only has two buttons and a picture there.

I think the size is an issue with that new gadget. I've turned it off permanently because my laptop is running on 1280x768. That catfish menu thingy takes up 15%'ish of my viewing space. If it was user adjustable or thrown on the left side of the browser, than I would use it...otherwise, it just reduces my viewing space.

It's a great idea, but still need to be more user friendly.

speaking as a committed user - I am going to close that sucker for good, sayonara!

but I can see the utility it brings to new visitors. it took a few weeks until i stopped using the nav bar at the top so a thumbnail laden navbar might be just the thing for new visitors...

If you're using Firefox, on the privacy option panel, you can set the "keep cookies until" option to "I close Firefox", and then set an allow exception for sites you actually use, like dannychoo.com. All the "evil" cookies will be blown away when you close the browser, but useful settings for sites like this will be retained. It is what I do anyway.

It's nice for new people...but it's too big so it and covers a good portion of the articles...i can't describe too well, but I've seen one of those arrows that is on the side that follows you as you scroll down and when you put your cursor over it a navigation panal pops out...maybe that would be more efficient?...I mean there is quite a bit of space to the left and right of the screen for that kind of thing...

A great addition to the site indeed.

Will enlarge popularity and eventually quality. Perfect for helping new users around the site.

There are also the element of it making the site heavier and slower to load.

It takes up space that most people have as their preferance in order to get "charmed" by the site.

Perhaps including it as a choice together with "Set gateway to regular" and "Set gateway to newby" would suffice? Not to have it as a necessity from the start.

If I "Close once" it takes even more time to render. Overall I find it is taking more time to for the pages to load. The catfish nav has some overlapping problems with some embedded objects it seems. You should probably add chrome to that list of browsers soon danny. After so many years, I finally left IE and switched to chrome. Never really been a fan of firefox. heheh! :D The lightweight-ness of the app just amazes me. Anyway, it doesn't really bother me as I closed it forever. heheh!

Not sure if its a good idea but thought I'd suggest it anyway. How bout if the catfish nav stays for some time (like 5-20 seconds or so) then after that time it will disappear or just have it attached to the footer or something. Everytime the user browses another page it'll latch on to the bottom of the screen again then after a certain time it'll move to the footer. I just noticed that it takes a whole lot of space and the look doesn't integrate well with the rest of the site. Just my first impression though.

I closed it forever. It ran just fine in SeaMonkey. If there was a way to have it open on the main page or the various summary pages (Member News, etc) but have it closed on the individual posts without constantly having to close it, that would be useful.
