Strike Witches title=

While the idea of girls flying around the sky in exoskeletons shooting seven shades of poopa out of bad dudes (Sky Girls) was appealing, the idea of girls flying around in pantsu with the back end of a plane stuck on their legs together with sprouting ears and tail just seemed like another bag of baboon turd mixed with mindless fanservice - I'm glad I was proved very wrong about Strike Witches ^^;

Strike Witches title=

The plot taken from ANN is as follows...

The year is 1939 - it was then that the Neuroi appeared. Nobody knows where they came from or what their ultimate agenda is, but the fact remains that their attacks drove people out of their towns and cities. In order to take arms against them, humanity develops a new anti-Neuroi weapon called the "Striker Unit." Using the power of magic to fight against the monsters, this new device enhances and amplifies the power of female magic-wielders. To use this device, young witches from all over the world have been brought together to form an elite task force unit called the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, commonly known as the "Strike Witches."

Strike Witches title=

Most of the girls running around in pantsu and referring to them as "Zubon" (trousers) did seem rather odd at first. The other odd thing is that the strike witches would sprout ears and a tail when in battle.

Strike Witches title=

While I personally think that loosing the ears and tail would not really take anything away from this show, I kinda got used to them running around in pantsu ^^;

Strike Witches title=

The show is currently up to EP 07. The animation has been above average in my mind and some of the action scenes are rather well done with many frames.

Strike Witches title=

The girls in Strike Witches are gorgeous!

Strike Witches title=

My fave is probably Lynette Bishop followed by Sanya V. Litvyak. Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke is gorgeous too and so is Gertrud Barkhorn and Erica Hartmann ^^; Who is your fave Strike Witch?

Strike Witches title=

Strike Witches is a pleasure to watch. The show does include fanservice scenes but they are done in a tasteful way. Many other shows seem to be oppai, oppai, pantsu, pantsu but Strike Witches does have a decent story. The background music is wonderful and makes you feel that you are watching some wartime movie.

Strike Witches title=

Have not seen the OAV yet but will make it a priority to do so ^^;

Strike Witches title=

Strike Witches has already made it to one of my fave Gonzo shows. Your fave Gonzo show is which?

Strike Witches title=

If you are looking for a new show to watch then do give Strike Witches a whirl - you may be surprised at what a gem this is.

Strike Witches title=

Hmmmm. Having difficulty finding the OP and ED for Strike Witches in YouTube. The videos below should give you an idea of what the show is like.

Haven't watched any of it yet; patiently waiting till someone posts a batch when it's ended. Judging from these shots, the fanservice is way more than in Sky Girls, which I already thoroughly enjoyed ^^

    Not many Strike Witches doujinshis found at Comiket so I found this series not that popular >_< That's my way to rate a show's popularity ^^;

Well so far only guys in the series have been the random sailors so they really only have girl on girl to work with and I'm sure quiet a few fans would be pissed if they broke the possible love relationships the characters have with each other.

Hm, half naked 10 year olds flying around with plane parts for legs... I think ill give this a miss and add it to my reasons why i dont watch much anime these days!
Even if it does have a great story, it just looks like pervy loli / mecha otaku eye-candy.

Strike Witches is quite enjoyable, the girls are so cute.
And the plot improves from episode to episode.

My favourite characters so far are Francesca,Charlotte and Lynette

Did I mention that the girls are cute ;)

Thank you for the post, Danny. I hope more people catch whim of this as a result. I've had my eye on this series ever since I saw the OVA. Seen up to episode 4, reading the manga, novel and I have two figurines so far. It really is very interesting, fanservice or not.. this show has so much potential(saying this as a military-Otaku as well).
It's quite hard to pick a favourite but, I'll go with these: Sanya, Minna, Lynette, Mio and Lucchini-chan... but, I like them all XD
[I'll be writing a fairly large entry in my blog about this series soon.]

It's the only anime i watch aside from Macross frontier..

My fave is Mina (for now maybe..) I just like her seemingly Conspirator character. She seems to have Yandere traits too ^__^

The Episode about Sanya was inspiring though.. So they also fly in IFR/IMC
I'm thinking that the Orussian Loli is the most proficient since she always fly at night ;p
After that i flew a lot of Night Flight to in my sims.

Anyway's i like the series :) though the Panty shots get annoying sometimes.. :)

Girls using panties all day shouldn't be in anime only, that should be a real-life law! Of course, this law only apply to the cute girls.

I couldn't get past all the pantsu. I can understand that it makes the jet boots easier to wear/draw or whatever, but they don't need to walk around 24/7 like that. Never made it past the first episode. If I want girls with "planes" I'll watch Allison and Lilia (which is excellent).
Besides, I found better things to watch this season, like Yakushiji Ryoko no Kaiki Jikenbo; and the shows from the spring I'm still watching like Allison and Lilia, and Nijuu Mensou no Musume.

Because I don't like shows full of fan service? Being female, it's not really something that's going to draw me to a show, and the story in the first episode didn't impress me enough to interest me beyond that. I understand the "well they're at war and could need to fly off at any moment!" But even the one little girl's school uniform was entirely too short.

Well, other than fanservice, wearing pantsu makes SOME sense. They wouldn't be wearing pants, because I'm pretty sure in the 30s it was expected of all women to wear dresses and skirts all the time. The other thing is, they're on base, so they have to be prepared all the time for an attack. Having to take a skirt off AND THEN hop into your leg planes would take too much time, especially for the self conscious girls who have to return to their rooms to change.

All in all though, my favoritewould have to be Mio, she's so positive that it's hillarious, and doesn't seem to get mad. In terms of cuteness though, I'd have to say it's between Lynette or Francesca.

Love my lolis, after years of anime I gotten really sick of the whole giant breasts deal that plagues anime these days. I just think lolis are cuter. Anyways Strike Witches is one of my favorites this season and I couldn't agree more with you on this Danny. I really had low expectations on this show, especially since it was a Gonzo production.

Episode 6 really cemented this show for me, personally I really like Francesca and Sanya, but I love all of them really. Which is rare because I generally tend to dislike at least once character in a show, this is one of those rare ones that I like em all.

I think I would have liked the series more if the girls wore skirts or actual trousers.

As a Canadian, I have to support our local hero, Lynette. Admittedly, I'm not really watching the series at the moment- I am working my way through the original OVAs of Patlabour (Noa is cute!), and waiting on GaoGaiGar boxset 2 to arrive.

yea, i second on that... if they can make the plot reasonable that they are *exposed* then i buy the idea better.... I thought sky girls was ok at that. " why are they dressed like that?" " cuz they need that suit in order to fly" of course.. the question lies in who the hell designed that suit Xp

but i guess you can't have them wearing 1930's clothing and being *exposed* with a good reason... T.T

or can't they just all wear skirts? that was the army standards of the time.. (for common wealth anyways)

and i just love the references !!

      ERICH HARTMANN 352 kills ! she's getting there !

Knights cros w/ words and oak leafs ! woot !! !

"Have not seen the OAV yet but will make it a priority to do so ^^; "

Basically theres nothing much to watch in the OAV, its just a 10min prelude that doesnt explain anything.

Bought the R2 DVD last year as a show of support, hoping such meagre "contribution" will push for a full release, and seems that my wish was granted. Anyway really have to thank my friend Vexar for getting it from Japan.

For those who have watched Welcome to NHK is true, IIRC, the Strike Witches OAV is mentioned in the story as a project done by students in the anime academy and the poster is plastered all over the place in the building.

I find Strike Witches an entertaining show. It’s good to have a show that allows you to sit back and take your brains out for a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I like shows like GitS:SAC, but there are times when I want to see half naked girls flying around with mechanical legs, wielding WW2 weapons, fighting for King, Country and for the last potato on the plate. ^_^

I also know that I’m not alone. At the last con I was at I had some fun and cosplayed as Mio Sakamoto for laughs. Some of the committee ended up watching Strike Witches to find out who I was and a lot of them ended up walking away with a new series to watch.

As to favourite character? It's a tough call and in the end a toss up between Lynette, Mio & Francessca (although I think Mio would win in the end... for some reason I love that laugh of hers ^^).

I just wish they’d release more figures of them. I have the 1/10 Francesca and saw pics of a 1/10 Miyafuji, but for love nor money I can’t find her anywhere >_<

    Sky Girls >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> strike witches.

At the moment, Strike witches feels like it's pretty much a pure fanservice show with little in terms of a cohesive plot. The eps have been just focusing on a specific character thus far and have been self contained.

While Sky Girls suffered for being a 26 ep show, at the rate it's going, Strike witches will suffer for being only 13 ep!!

The OVA was really dull too.

As for fave Gonzo show... Probably full metal panic! Season 1 and Seto No Hanayome.

I really enjoyed Gravion, Kiddy Grade,. chrono crusade and Vandread as well. It's just a shame that their shows tend to be either pretty decent or just pants!

Oh, and as to my favourite Gonzo, all the Gonzo I've seen have been pretty much a let down, because I always thought they were meant to be great or something(dont know quite why...) I just watched two episodes of this after seeing this topic. I'm not sure what to think about the show at the moment but the aerial scenes are definitely top notch. For Gonzo shows that I've seen, I'd probably put Last Exile as my favourite. I'd have given the mantle to Samurai 7 but they had a few episodes where they really cut back the budget on the animation. Trinity Blood was also great until the ending. But without a doubt, Gonzo has killer animation.

I'm not much for GONZO produced shows. They tend to focus on a lot of flair, a lot of fanservice, and a lot of easily forgettable story. If it was one or both of the first two, that would be fine, but they try hard to press it into a story--kind of like painting tofu yellow and calling it cheddar. Still hate what they did to Full Metal Panic as a "first season."

I love Strike Witches and it really made my summer go too fast. :P
Partly, since I've been waiting almost a year since the OVA came out(you'll see how much the character designs changed), as well as purchased vol. 1 of the trading figures.

Thanks for your comment on the Strike Subs blog, Danny! :)

I've enjoyed "Strike Witches" so far as well. And while it a series that at its core was born from fanservice elements, it's still executed well enough as to not become bothersome or over the top.
Some other recent series as "Sekieri" with mso tof the characters having absurdly large chests take it a bit too far, further than needed and that can get annoying. (Mind you I still enjoy "Sekirei", I just think their chests could have been half as big and still would have been plenty.)

It can't be helped, since they only wear panties for lower body. (Except the 2 white hair ones)

Like panty shots all the time equates to Fanservice only.. or something like that as generalization..

I may continue to watch the show as I'm not sure if it is good idea to purse such a show in the U.S. The other item that surprised me is that the show is made be GONZO then again they made Burst Angel so it makes sesnce. Either way it probably is a good show and I will watch. Thanks again for your insight on the matter.

It's nice to be proven wrong in this case, though it's still not the sort of show you could watch when a non-anime-watching friend comes round (for me that's all of my friends but one; most of my friends haven't even heard of DBZ or Gundam).

    Good news for Sanya's fans.
Kotobukiya is planning to make Sanya's figure.
I'm pretty sure Sanya's fans is not going to miss this.
