Snap taken at the local shopping mall. 14,000 yen for just a perm sounds rather expensive to me - no wonder they dropped the price to 10,500 yen - still sounds expensive though. Maybe its because they are calling it a "Digital 3D Perm" ?
I currently get my hair cut for about 4,500 yen. I should go once a month but end up going once every two months.
Does it cost an arm and a leg to get your hair cared for in your neck of the woods?

Speaking of hairstyles - see the cutie Mai-chan get a make over below - you may want to skip to 1:16-ish to see her. She looks very nice at the end too.

you have to remeber that Japan is a generally expensive place.

As of 2005, the average price of a typical bag of groceries were as follows

      US: $28.16
      UK: $30.00
      JAPAN: $78.20

I paid £9.50 (1334 JPY at the current exchange rate) the last time I had it cut - although now I have longer hair, I should really spend a bit more and get a better job. Would like a hairstyle like Light's character in the live action Death Note films. How do I ask a hairdresser for that, lol?

You can just take a picture a show em, not sure about cheap places (show a pic an they completely do it how they like) but I usually get my haircut from either Toni and Guy or Francesco's an you can just show em a picture an they'll try an do it exactly. Toni and guy is kinda expensive though average £35 for short hair (upto shoulder length), Francesco's not bad usually around £25 do a good cut but you have to be very specific.

Heh. I prefer to just keep my hair shaggy. This preference does not mean that eventually I'm spared being dragged by force to get it cut shorter than I like...

Danny, you are forgetting the fantastic service we get in Japan.

I pay 3990 yen for my cut. With it I get:

    -Shampoo/Conditioner/Head massage
-Hot foam shave (maybe not applicable for the women)
    -Cut/Styling
-Shoulder/neck massage by some very cute girls doing arubaito
    -Hot tea/biscuits

Certainly worth the money. Especially the hot foam shave with a straight blade. Feels very good compared to an electric shaver.

I live in a city, so my haircuts usually cost around £20 :(

I've tried going to cheaper places, but they always seem to make a mess of things. I'm about to get it cut off much shorter, though (it's currently about chin-length) so maybe I'll be able to get it done cheaper. My hair really needs to be cut every six weeks because it grows so fast, but I can't afford it.

Maybe it costs more 'cause of the way they curl the hair? I'm only speculating, mind, since I know almost nothing about hairdressing ^^; Genetically speaking, many Japanese folks have very straight hair, right? So maybe it costs more to get a perm that'll stay put for a long period of time.

Then again, my mum also has super-straight hair, and no matter what they try, every time she gets a perm it falls flat really fast.

Does it cost more in Japan to get your hair cut if you're a girl, too? If memory serves, prices always seem to be cheaper for men around here, though I guess most of the time they don't have as much hair.

From my experience, everything costs more in Japan. O.o Like you pay more for a smaller pizza there than you do in the U.S. and Canada (where we naturally have larger pizzas then theirs). O.o

Ouch, really? Like, is it just generally more for 'foreign' foods, so to speak (like pizza) than it is for traditional fare (like donburi), or is everything super expensive?

I think it's just foreign. I don't know about Japan, but I do know nearby Hong Kong charges for pizza like it's gourmet food (considering they put crab and steak on it, that might be too far off). I also know their extra-large pizza is the size of a small in Canada. >_>

As a girl, I pay $40 for a simple, layered cut from a non-asian place, and $55 for a nice-looking cut from a Japanese place. Not sure what guys pay; it's usually less, but I suppose if they're actually styling your hair (not just buzz-cutting it) then it probably costs just as much.
    As a side note, I've noticed that in order to get a really nice cut, I need to go to asian places; non-asians simply don't know how to cut/style asian hair, so I always end up walking out looking pretty much exactly the same as when I walked in... x_x;;

Hair care can get expensive here, but if you keep your style simple and have friends or family willing to give you a basic split end trim, you can avoid the vast majority of the costs. ^^; Of course, since I keep my hair long, I only have to have a friend or my mom trim my split ends twice a year, and I need to cut my bangs once a month or two to avoid the sheepdog look. XD A lot of people are surprised when I say my waist-length hair is easier to maintain than when it was shoulder length.

    Student (lol rite.)

I just pay about 9 bucks at a Beauty Salon.
Then again, the owner is a family friend, so I dunno if she just charges us less.

Wow its amazing what a good haircut can do for someone. She looks so much better!

And I also have to say I am guilty of spending alot of money on my hair....about 160 USD :/
