Don't let the name of this odd sounding anime put you off from giving it a whirl as you will find a gem amoung this summers anime shows. Tetsuwan Birdy plot covered by Wikipedia below.
Tsutomu Senkawa is an average high school kid who is busy studying for his senior entrance exams. Tsutomu goes out for some fresh air, after a hard day's work studying for a big test, when he runs into a guy fleeing from a pretty young lady.

The pursued man is actually an interplanetary criminal on the run from a Federation agent called Birdy Cephon Altera. Caught in the midst of this chase, Tsutomu gets thrown by the man at Birdy, which kills Tsutomu. Fortunately for Tsutomu, there is a way to keep him alive, although he ends up merged into Birdy's body and must remain so until the repair of his body is complete.

So Tsutomu is stuck sharing a body with a rather attractive, yet very strong but impulsive, space police agent, while trying to keep his apathetic family and more importantly, his girlfriend, from finding out about his woman problems.

In the meantime, to make matters worse, Birdy still has to do her job. Together, they take on a rather secretive group of evil aliens planning to perform maniacal experiments on the unsuspecting inhabitants of Tokyo.
Although Tetsuwan Birdy has been out as a manga which made it to a previous OVA back in 2006, I only first heard of the show at this years Tokyo Anime Fair. Liked the look of the show and stuck it on the "must check out" list.
So this is another "girl-from-space-meets-earthling-boy" but it does come with a difference - my wife likes it unlike To Love Ru ^^;
While Birdy does run around in a leotard type thingy, fan service levels are very low - so if you hate fan service then at least it should make it to your "to-consider" list.
Will be keeping Birdy on the watch list for the story, animation/sound quality and the cute girls in it. Its currently at EP2 so I'm sure many of your comrades would have a recorded copy for you.
A caring comrade uploaded the whole of EP1 up to YouTube. EP1/1 below.
EP1/2
EP1/3
And the OP below. The ED is completely crap.
Now I want to get my grubby mitts on the previous OVA. Any folks here seen it?

I thought the animation was a bit choppy & bland, but the cg ship sequence was slick. Quality issue aside its on my watch list for now.

Original animation was about 3 episodes I think, and it was released way before 2006. Birdy the Mighty manga was at first just one vol. and they made the OVAs based on that one shot manga. Then few years later, the current revised manga came out which are still serialized right now.

I don't think I'll watch the anime sereis since I heard it's going to be 13 episodes long and I don't think that can cover the manga that much. Just a side-note, the mangaka of Tetsuwan Birdy was also did the popular Patlabor manga series.

The original OVA was 6 eps and was from 1996-1997. I had already seen the original OVA which I liked very much, so I was thrilled to hear that is was getting a full series. And even more thrilled that I got a bag from Tokyo Anime Fair with Birdy on it ^^ (one of the 6 bags I got ;p)

hm, that explains why I thought it seems pretty different from OVA, didn't know it was a one-shot manga at first. I thought it'd be so long since I watched the OVA that I mixed it up with a few other animes. I remember finding the OVA to be nothing special and was thinking of passing on this, but I guess I'll check it out and see.

This series is awesome, period. Didn't know it has a manga gonna try it later.
BTW it is directed by the same director who did noein so the animation is somewhat similar, to certain ppl it might look choppy and such.

I watched the first ep and was impressed by the premise to I decided to keep up, but the animation, esp during the fight, was very poor.

That doesn't bode well for the rest of the season if the first ep looksed poor in places...

I really like the animation style of this, and the faces are very appealing - they look more natural than the usual samey big eyed ones you normally get!

Might have to give this a try... I havent gotten into an anime series for ages.

I agree with some of the others comments the animation quality is not as good as some of these other mainstays this year such as Macross Frontier and Code Geass R2. The plot mechanics certainly give me hope that it will be entertaining but episode #2 didn't look so "visually" appealing. :( Holding on for Zegapain sequel?!?!! Where is it?!?!

Defenetly (spell chk?) on my watch list. Loved the organic look to the ships and the AI sidekick. I like the plot too! I want to see more.

For some reason I realllyyyy hate Tsutomu's guts. He's annoying also (if you watch the beginning of ep 2).

Is it only me or is dannychoo.com takes much longer to load nowadays?

No because i don't like when the anime doesn't follow the manga. Aniplex has changed almost everything and they still want a second season!!!
I'm reading the manga but definitively i won't watch the anime.

I wonder why she was named Birdy though. My boyfriend and friend couldn't stop laughing especially when the screen showed just "Birdy" in the opening sequence XD

    Bumping a semi-old entry, but:

I have to say I really liked the OVA more. I'd much rather have seen a continuation of the OVA (which left off quite open ended) than this, which was very different from the original.

I'll prolly try to get a look at the manga sometime soon, then.
