Filling up the humidifier with water. A humidifier is called Kashitsuki [加湿器] and are used in the Winter for many reasons over here.
One of the reasons is that most of the heating is provided by an air conditioner which really dries out the air leaving ones throat in a mess and skin dry.

Our humidifier is filled with about 2 liters of water in the morning and runs out in the evening - time to fill up again. It also comes with a little pot which you can fill with aroma oils that give the room a herbal smell.
It also comes with settings for "throat" and "skin" but not exactly sure what the difference is as the steam looks the same ^^;

This actual humidifier has appeared in an episode of Kanon - cookies for those who can remember which episode.

Some Kanon action below.

There is a big steel kettle sitting on top of the fireplace that we fill up with water to add some moisture to the air.
Although lately it's been wet enough around here that there isn't really any need to fill it up.

My wife and I bought this same humidifier for her parents. I wish we had them here in the states. This reminds me that I need to check the humidifier. The one here is huge and holds almost 34 liters of water and runs out every evening. ^^; Heat pumps that are installed with most houses here in the states act just like the unit in Japan...

Here its more like the equator even with the central air heater on (if it ever gets cold enough to use) its still humid enough for the dehumidifier. I should probably get 2 dehumidifiers now. Its only cold here Maybe 2 months a year 40 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico plenty of water you can't drink every where. Oh static electricity even with humidity and no heater on with blankets and plastic bread bag wraps ect when it is cooler too.

Even though I have small respiratory problems, I love dry climates...
Probably because my hometown, in which I lived for almost 26 years, was TOO humid.

When it's hot, you sweat all day long, and night too. Which is awful.
When it's cold, hands and feet get frozen, and if you sleep with too many blankets, you wake up sweating... gah

Where I'm living now the climate is way more dry.. and I'm loving it! xD
The only problem is that the smog that comes out from cars on the street gets here in my apartment too easily. Few hours with windows open are enough to get a thin layer of dirt all over the place.

But lots of people have humidifiers here... as for me, for now, on really dry days, a wide bucket filled with water on the balcony will sufice. xD

Oh, also, the steam coming out of the rice coker. xD

We used to have one like that, and I really wish we still did. My eyes are red and scratchy, my eczema is worse than ever, and I've had a perma-sore-throat since December. Sadly, it happens every winter when we close all the windows and turn on the heat.

On a better note, the second scene is no less funny no matter how many times you watch it.

Here, it's so dry constantly that there's pretty much no point to having the humidifier on, as it just dissipates pretty much instantly. The only time most people here bother is when they have a cold and/or allergies, and even then they usually keep it next to the bed and only use it when they sleep to ensure they get any benefit from the thing at all.

I used to use a humidifier when I younger, since I was more prone to dried sinuses.
Generally, my house's humidity is around 40% and maybe 30% in summer.

BTW, I think it's best to use distilled water in humidifiers, since tap water will leave behind mineral build-up and junk that's hard to clean.

Here humidifiers are only used in locations where you want a specific humidity, like museums (fragile old stuff). Otherwise the problem would be too high humidity and for that we have machines that dries the air. We don't use that many though because they use quite a lot of electricity. In fact I only know one guy using one and that's because he has problems with water getting into the basement. He stores the water it provides since it's quite pure and free of calcium and stuff so I always know where to get free water for lead-acid (car) batteries :D

I laughed at the anime. Didn't know Kanon, but now I'm interested. The bath scene reminded me of when my sister walked in on me right after I got out of the shower (still wet and not wearing anything). It was quite funny afterwards because I kept giving her remarks about her spying on men in showers and she blushed every time and denied. Odd thing is that she only tried this once and she only did it one of the very few (the only?) time I forgot to lock the door.
