Denou Coil via the iPhone. Through watching the video below, you will see the iPhone being used to view the real world. The application will then pick up Air Tags depending on where the iPhone camera is looking. A click on a tag will then reveal information.
Applications include examples like giving out discounts at a restaurant, displaying information about your immediate surroundings, maps and what have you. Maybe a load of oppai jumping at you when in Akiba?

Details are still a bit fuzzy bit will try to bring the inventors along to the next CGM Night to get more info. Must get round to watching Denou Coil too.

WOH! That is awesome. Imagine if little tiny data chips were put on every sign door and any moving object and you just moved the I-pod around like a Tricorder on Startrek and it gave you all info about it in your own language no matter what country you were in!

Why bother with chips? We have GPS for these purpose. For wxample I but somekindof gps device and carry it with me. Whenever I need to know something I just push the button and the data comes right through the wireless internet connection to somekindof display. Thats how it works in this anime, and those glasses are allinone device. Still, it'll take around 5 more years for this kind of technology to be mass-used.

Consumer GPS isn't quite that precise, at least not what we have now. And it doesn't update quickly enough to keep up with you swinging the phone around while standing on the spot.

Heck, I don't even know if GPS can tell which direction you're pointing in if you're standing still. Not my area of expertise, but I don't think it can.

most gps units are equiped with a compass or a digital compass and do know which way you are turned. But GPS is ineffective in buildings due to limited to no signal

Those only apply to the GPS that are installed in cars (which tells you the direction that you are facing). Consumer GPS generally update as you move, tell you when to turn and stuff.

Rusting I can see where you are going with this because chips are getting cheaper and cheaper everyday so in the future our city might be cover by tiny chip well hidden by the public eye so we can use the application above. GPS won't be a good idea since it still have problem exactly pin point the actual location.

Looks cool. There is also quite a few augmented reality apps being developed for android phones: http://www.vimeo.com/843168 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EA8xlicmT8

Personally I'm looking forward to the day when proper overlay glasses (like those featured in Dennou Coil) become ubiquitous. Would like to buy a pair of these: http://www.realwire.com/release_detail.asp?ReleaseID=10934, however I imagine they are still quite expensive.

Dennou Coil is somewhere in the 20+ list of animes I have to watch... maybe it'll take a while, but I'll watch it one of these days...

About the iPhone thing, I've seen this in other phones, though only as prototypes.
Uses Augmented Reality, image recognition and tags techniques.

I think we still need faster processors to accomplish something like that, but it's the future.

Very interesting way to retrieve data from a certain point of interest... you only have to point the camera phone at it.

well the base AR code was done I just upgraded the code to accept more and show more than just primitive objects (like spheres and cubes).

In the end it took a good hour or 2 but the hard part comes now, I want to make a little game where you can put multiple codes and it creates the players. You can move them and shoot at each other or something.

Or a funny hentai game one player is a giant octopus and the other a cute loli >:)
