So lately been getting a ton O incremental users from not only the Japanese community after the GSC Broadcast but also from BoingBoing where I'm guest burogging. The term "incremental users" is lingo for folks who become regular users.

The things I introduce on BB are mostly about Japan and beleive that there are many BB readers who enjoy Japan stuff. Have had many BB users join my Facebook and Twitter to send me messages telling me how they especially love the A Week in Tokyo articles.

So it looks like there was a reader who liked my Tokyo Photo Walks enough to submit it to Reddit but with the amusing comment which you can see here:-

I'd enjoy Danny Choo's Tokyo pics more if he put his creepy, perverted anime stuff on a separate site.

I have no intention of separating my passions into different sites ^^
We have probably talked this before but I wanted to take a poll of how many of you encounter folks with the same opinion around you?

Photo of me in my office surrounded by creepy and perverted anime stuff (which I lurve to bits) ^o^/

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Otaku category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

People mostly consider my BL anime like Junjou Romantica perverted/creepy, but nothing else. Then again, no other anime do I watch in school where people can see.

Yes, BL IS perverted/creepy if you are a heterosexual male. But I don´t think that females would have a problem with it, since most men would like liesbians.

I was having a conversation about House M.D. fanfiction with a (female) friend, and when I mentioned I dig slash fiction her eyes went O_O and she was speechless for a moment. It was pretty funny actually.

But anyway, I find that guys are more likely to like/admit they like girl x girl than girls will of boy x boy. Maybe it's social stigma or something, I don't know. Of course, the opposite seems to prevail in fandom land when you've got girls running around with yaoi paddles and whatnot.

The folks around here (including friends and family members and neighbors) don't think anime is creepy or perverted at all. I flaunt anime shirts all the time and they think its pretty cute or just another shirt with a cartoon character on it. My family doesn't care about my over exposed figures and the Kanu Dakimakura hanging on the wall either. I think people are referring to Hentai or something when they lable anime as perverted.

yes it's really sad when people think of anime only as either A) hentai or B) Pokemon or stuff like that. People at school b*tch about how i supposedly watch pokemon (I quit watching it myself a long time ago but still watch with my little cousin J) and I dont watch a lot of hentai (I guess generally I just dont care, porn is porn, and they're both fake) But one of my cousin's says that i'm immature and all that stupid sh*t. Anyways, i'm proud to be an anime otaku and I WONT STOP.

In where i live in america, Anime is a no go. Everybody think it's hentai. Wall scrolls of anime girls and people will think it's hentai, figures=hentai, Dragon ball Z=Hentai, well at least for them... I only have a tiny group of friends who actually listen to my ramblings on anime, because they enjoy it too. haha. At least half of my school is asian too, so it brings curiosity to me why most of them think anime is the devil... o well. They don't know what they are missing out on.

Well, there are ignorant people. And because they're not willing to learn, they stay ignorant. I would also say it depends where you are from. I'm in the bible belt of the south. I find most ignorant about anime, or hypocritical (based on a limited viewing of shows). And there are women who are jealous of 2d girls, so there is no hope there. But anime isn't for everyone and I understand that fact. I enjoy it so I'm not concerned about their opinion.

So there would be people that have a stereotype view towards anime and manga.. ...People I know around me have a similar view... but, when they actually sit down and see the story, and concept..... some understand the whole gist of it.. Danny, keep the work the same... that's why DC is so awesome in my eyes.. .. Luckily, with my personality, my friends and colleagues are understanding towards my fondness of anime and manga....

The purpose of a blog is to blog about various events in your life. Why do so many people forget that DC.com is a blog?

Some people prefer to use their blog to concentrate on just one hobby while others like to blend in various things in one.

On the contrary i decided to open my blog for Anime reasons and anything related to Japanese culture. As you can see i now have my haters who bash me for having Anime figures. Still i'm unsure how my blog was discovered by such idiots.

I think that Pervert and Creepy are ugly words, but I do think that most anime has some eye candy here and there as part of the appealing that can drive people to think this way, if it isn't sexy then it's loli or sort of, but I don't see anything wrong with that, in fact I'm guilty of watching some series just for that 'eye candy' but I'm perfectly fine with it, what is annoying is just the expression used, but I do think that the 'eye candy' IS a important feature for anime.

Eh, I always find those sorts of comments pretty entertaining. I mean, even I find some parts of the fandom go a bit far beyond my comfort zone. But you accept that as just part of what the Otaku world is and leave it at that. I mean, I like cars but that doesn't mean I have to like ricers.

    So yeah, I can see how "normal" people would form the "creepy perveted anime" opinion if they ran headlong into a site like DC.com without the seasoning that the rest of us have had. Like hey, I used to think the same thing ^^;

Although Brazil has a considerably large so-called otaku community (so-called because much of them are not otaku at all, but that's not the point now), a very good amount of people still think that mangas and animes are perverted stuff. And, to tell you the truth, I bet these people cannot even explain why they think in this way. I tried asking a few times and all I received were poor answers.

Even some channels don't hide that they dislike anime. To have an idea, I can remember that series as Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were censored several times. And last year there was a riddiculous news about a young couple that had escaped home. Summarizing the whole thing: the news made it appear that they have fled because (1) they watched animes and (2) were part of an otaku forum. And when some otakus protested to this nonsense (mostly online), the news called them "defenders of the couple".

Anyway, since otaku is a growing minority around here it is not as bad as it looks.

I remember that. It was riddiculous!!! Complete BS!

But I guess the media is getting used... they even aired some news talking about "cosplay community" that weren't all that bad.

Last year even had a carnival parade about Japan celebrating the centenary of japanese immigration to Brazil that had some manga/anime/cosplay related stuff.

But the REAL problem is that most think this is for kiddos. =/

Yeah, we do have this problem as well. It is even worse than the "creepy perverted anime" believers. Some of my colleagues, when discovered that I'm an otaku, kept making poor jokes of Naruto and Pokémon for weeks. And I've already talked to some narrow-minded people that called me "stupid and childish" because I do cosplay occasionally. ¬¬'

But the Centenary truly helped (and was a great celebration, by the way)- at least a little - in this sense. I'd say Japan's image is very positive here.

lol anime/manga/otaku stuffs are only creepy if there's too much obsession about it, just like everything else. ^_^; A person who watches anime and collects anime goodies is just normal, it's just a matter of preferences, but now it's creepy if someone just surrounds himself with everything anime only and just drool over dakimura pillows and lolicon 24h/day lol~

Well, people sometimes might have negative views about otakus, coz in fact there are some otaku stuffs that might give off negative impressions, but then again, this is just like everything else. So why so serious? People who just judges others based on what they don't even know well can just be ignored anyways. XD

Anyways, personally, I guess that DC seems pretty normal (echii stuffs seems minimal), and actually a nice place to wander around, with many interesting things about Japan and otaku stuffs~ X3

I mean, what's make regular TV show different from Anime anyway? Just because no actor, just because not a real human show, so what? If they said waste of time and childish, isn't just same like regular TV show?

I think DC.com is fine as it is. However, I have definitely encountered a backlash against anime. I write about gaming a lot on my blogs, and occasionally about anime. I get negative feedback about anime there too, especially from the Counterstrike and FPS shooter crowd (not all people who like FPS dislike anime, but I'm only writing from my experience).

I used to not like figures as much and once thought wouldn't DC.com be great without all those figure reviews. Now, I totally look forward to them. I think it just takes time.

It gets to me when people automatically classify animes as childish when they have NO idea what animes truly are. There are lots of different kinds of animes(serious, romantic, funny, etc...) but people fail to see that, I guess. It does not lose in any way to what these people watch (tv series, shows, etc...), in fact I think that most of the stories, music, setting, etc in anime are better because there are more possibilities of stories(lots of diversity: science fiction, martial arts, slice of life, mobile suits, etc...), the music chosen in animes are wonderful(most of them), setting is nicely done too. For me, the character/seiyuu combined form an unique character and finally, 2D>3D(that's what I think ^^).

Americans generalize anime as hentai except for certain shows that they had exposure with as a kid (Dragonball Z and Gundam Wing). However, you get the slightest criticism when you have something like an anime wallpaper with a female character on it. My friend went looney when he saw most of the main female cast of Code Geass as my YouTube channel wallpaper since he thought it was anime porn (hentai to be precise); as soon as he complained about it I changed it to a Gundam 00 wallpaper and he quieted down ever since.

Most anime is pervy and creepy. There, I said it. Doesn't mean I don't love a whole lot of it though but some things are really pushing the "maybe this shouldn't be animated," envelope. Panty shots every other frame, boobs bigger than heads, nonstop groping, etc. It is beginning to feel like I am watching softcore p0rn instead of focusing on the storyline.

I personally have never met anyone that thinks the same as the above quote. Or at least no one has ever said anything about it.

Everyone has different views on different subjects, but it in no way means that a person should change the way they do things just because one person doesn't like it.

I find that people tend to think those types of things as a result of ignorance and closed mindedness. I'm willing to bet that anyone that has these kinds of opinions has never actually taken the time to truly experience the subject they are questioning themselves.

I had a friend in middle school who insisted Sailor Moon was Japanese porn. I hadn't been exposed to much anime at the time, but I knew even then that Sailor Moon's ecchi level was waaaay too low relatively speaking to come anywhere near being thought of as porn. I wonder what she'd think of a much more fanservicy anime. Or an eroge. XD

Well, from what I see of the comments and polls most of us definitely don't think anime is creepy. Big surprise... ^^; Obviously, that stuff is here to stay for DC, and none of the more active and vocal members have a problem with it (or are the cause of it...).

But seriously, guys - it's inevitable that some people will in fact find it perverted and creepy. I introduce anime to my little brother to watch, and I'm always surprised by how many shows I have to pass over because neither of us want him to watch ecchi stuff.

I think I'll just appreciate the fact that the people who DO have a problem with it aren't bash-happy. I know there has to be some flaming that most of us never find out about, but all in all the people who don't like anime come to this site, get what they want (Tokyo photos in this instance) and don't bother trolling orflaming the rest of us.

That's a lot more than I can say for almost any other site out there.

Please don't change your site Danny.

I know lots of folks who think that anime is creepy.

They argue that some animes are lolicon material (in nicer sounding words). For example, Elfen Lied, Mahoromatic, Spice and Wolf, Index, Nanoha, Negima, list goes on. All those shows show underaged girls either naked or in sexy compromising positions. I personally don't have a problem with those animes at all but some stuff I've seen in Japan goes beyond what I am comfortable viewing (Comiket had loads of it). BUT, people can draw what ever they like, people can put whatever they want on there webpages (as long as its legal), and I don't have to view it if I'm not comfortable. Very much against censorship and some of the shocking things I have not yet run into in Japan, I enjoy seeing that here. Though, I am very happy to see NSFW warnings about.

Just recently found out that a dude in my class likes moe too, don't know to what extent but he did have a lot of moe images in his laptop. But it seems a few of the guys I play games with has a little of an idea that I am into anime girls since I choose female characters all the time and have a little fun with the game camera with them. Besides that, many other people I know think that moe is weird and must mean that i'm crazy enough to like it. In America it's hard to tell people that you are into moe most of the time in my opinion.
The reason I come to this site is for the moe stuff and some insight about the otaku culture in japan and it seems its very much well more accepted in japan than in america, heck I dont even see any anime promotional posters around my area and everytime I walk into the anime dvd section if theres a person around they give me a weird look.
This is the sole reason for why visual novels will never make a big hit in america.

Doubt you have to change anything at all because your readers wouldn't still be here commenting if they didn't like your site, DC.

Anyway, it depends on the people I meet. My fellow ethnic Chinese or relatives think cartoons are childish no matter how dramatic they are and if you still watch them, you haven't grown up yet. Most don't know about the adult material or only watch the dubbed shows where all the fan service have been edited out, though.

My Western friends on the other hand, think "Manga" when I explain to them Anime is Japanese animation and they think lots of gore. Either that or the first thing that comes to mind is Pokemon and Dragonball =P

I'm studying Japanese at university, so the people around me are well aware of what anime is and isn't, regardless of whether they like it or not. When I was in my first year there were others on the course who looked down on the anime fans because they assumed we weren't serious about the course. Now I'm in my second year, I've proven my dedication and it's not a problem any more.

It probably varies depending on the university, but the Sheffield one is quite tough. It's rewarding - I've come a long way with the language in less than two years - but the teachers work us hard and it requires a lot of dedication and probably a degree of natural aptitude for the language to keep up with the work. We don't have many class hours compared to other courses, but there is plenty of studying to do outside of classes. Spending the third year at a Japanese university is certainly a draw to studying the language, though.

If you're thinking of switching to Japanese it might be useful to try out a beginners' course while you're at your current university first and see how you get on with it, because quite a lot of people drop out both because they don't pass the exams and because they just don't like the course (we were at sixty or so at the start of the course, forty at the start of the second year, and we're about to loose more from the first semester exams, and anyone who doesn't pass this year won't be able to do the year abroad).

Ah, the usual "anime = hentai" connection. It's often the same here in Germany. Ask an "ordinary" German about anime and with 90% chance he will answer something like
    - "Anime? Ah, you mean these pervert comics from Japan, right?" or
    - "Animes are these Chinese cartoons for kids like Pokémon, aren't they?" or
    - "Anime? Never heard."

My advice is to not loose the determination on what you are doing...even under an hevy-rain of evil comments. It was like "woahh porn!!" when i started to watch my anime in the lunch breaks, without them even having seen any of my screen...
So in communication class we had the opportunity hold a presenation about a topic we know well or whatever...
Obviously i picked "Japan & Anime" and had a 20 minute presenation with the result that 80% of the audience got interested in it and watched an anime with me in the following up lunch break on the beamer.
They lost a lot of their prejudices towards anime and i'm sorta happy about that, some even joined up and start to watch anime slowly by themself now. ;)

I hate it when people go "ohhh porn" at ANY given anime... it's sad because in my eyes anime is "art", but usualy i don't argue about it - just a waste of nerves. It's my hobby at all and i can't force others to like it - but hey, i can help them to understand it better and specialy - show that it is not all porn OR creepy stuff. ;)

Mhh, I never minded the mix here of anime/figures and all things Japan. In fact it makes the site more interesting to me as it reflects what I'm looking for to read and see, if I had to go to seperate sites it would be less convenient.

And sure there are things here I'm not a big fan of, e.g. still unsure about the Dollfies, but I try to be interested and open minded so why would any of that bother me?
If there's really some article or so I don't want to see, well I simply don't read it, lol. ^^

Its hard being labelled straight away when someone sees you like the Japanese culture and anime.

Some just think, oh you like that "oriental stuff" and automatically think you don't like anything else. Some will pass comment without knowing what anime is. Some will just think you're watching hentai, etc.

Basically, a grown male watching cartoons of moe/ecchi characters doesn't go well with some people. They just think I'm immature, or just plain weird.

Tough to know what to say to these people short of explaining everything.

Amen to that comrade. Some people hold a negative attitude to anime, maybe because they saw some of the more "extreme" anime e.g. guro-hentai, or feel that as an animation ie "cartoon", its for children and is thus immature. If thats the case, well its their loss. Anime is not your regular Sunday morning cartoons, it sometimes have excellent adult themes that makes it interesting to watch.

People will always have the stigma against anime, no matter how hard we try to convince them otherwise. So its better to just enjoy anime without justifying the reason.

Oh btw, if dannychoo.com removes anime related content, I will revolt!

People fear what they don't understand. And stupid or ignorant people dismiss things with such hurtful comments as the one above because they're, well, stupid or ignorant. But with broadening your user base comes that inevitable "mainstream" demographic that doesn't handle niche interests well. I've always thought the site was pretty perfect as is, with the exception of a few more recent things like magibon, which probably won't change, that put me off a little bit. And I know this isn't the site's fault, but for a while anime and manga themselves hit a rough patch and I was really tired of being inundated with nothing but moe and sex sex sex. It seems to have gotten out of its funk for the most part, but it was just too much for a while. I don't mind fanservice, but when the bulk of anime becomes like Kanokon I need to take a break for a lil bit.

I have heard two bad things about anime. The first one is that they are violent and the aim is violence (Pokemon is an example of this). The other one is that the drawings are made of deform people with totally oversized eyes.

I kind of agree with the violence thing but that's not stopping me from watching non-violent stuff. I still wonder about the eyes thing though. I presume that quite a number of people here prefers anime girls to have big eyes (pun intented).

I haven't heard anybody talking about hentai, but I presume that it's because people don't know about it or they do and want to hide that they do. Personally I try to avoid it as I actually think tentacles and stuff like that is kind of creepy.

"Phew", you had me worried for a sec, danny. This site is just fine as it is.

Most people around here are so closed-minded and as far from an otaku as you can possibly get, so you can imagine the types of reactions they would have to subjects like anime and manga. I've even met people who think anime is nothing but perverted images such in the instance when I was looking at some innocent anime pictures on Konachan. This guy sitting next to me said I was looking at porn and I'm like, "yes, that's what it is"(sarcastically). I would try to explain but it would be pointless.

My friends are fine with it though, if only because they are perverts too. XD Nah, they like anime also, so they are much more tolerant about the Japanese subculture than most would be, so Im glad.

I think anyone who finds anime creepy and perverted should probably look into the american pornography industry, specifically the companies dealing with "animal interactions" or girls with cups. Then come back and tell me that anime is more creepy and perverted than all of that.

Anime have tons of genres and sub-genres made for a specific group or types of people in mind. And not all would fit into a person's preference. Some may be perverted and creepy for others but not to me or some one else.

Besides DC.com doesn't cater to anime alone, it tackles a gamut of Otaku-related topics, as well as bits of information about Japanese culture since Danny lives there. The anime things shouldn't be such a big deal for non-enthusiasts to enjoy this site right?

Where I work most everyone either watches anime, is in a rock band, or both. Tech support. We all build our own computers. My dad was the only person I knew closely who just didn't like anime, but he found the visual style annoying, particularly the saucer eyes. He did not consider it creepy or disturbing. Just unaesthetic.

Well, this kind of thoughts is one of the thousands reason why people here are not really enthusiastic with anime and related.
Sometimes I'm thinking quite much about this, not yet taken a survey, but by hypothesis, I think they're just too much thinking on their 'reality', which could lead into many things. Most of them just said "Get real" or if we're on a Gundam or Super Robot topic, they'd say "Those are not real, I wanted to see the real robot". Sometimes I countered them with the crane or digger machine, and said "Those are the real controllable robots" and laughed to them. They just got more confused when I said that it's obvious that those are real 'mechs'~

I have many hobbies. I have enough that most people dislike at least 4-5, or just think the money I spend/spent on them is crazy.

TCGs, miniatures, anime, RPGs, reading... Though people are usually ok with reading, and the disbelief coming just about the amounts..

I'm not sure I understand the issue. Have you been dry humping people in the streets of Tokyo and I just haven't seen the pictures? Did you post pictures of you snogging a dakimakura? I think "creepy, perverted" is relative. My guess is that this is a repressed individual.

I'm not huge on anime and manga, although I follow a couple of series when I have the time, it was the Week in Tokyo series and general Japan photo articles that got me hooked, but I certainly can't say any of the other content detracts from the site. If it's not your sort of thing, you don't have to read those articles.

On the other discussion that's been going on - From my own experiences, the main stigma attached to anime/manga by the people I know is it's 'too childish'. However, that's just generally from association with DBZ/Pokemon etc, and there's really not many people I've known who have really felt that strongly about it. Even my parents, who used to say 'what's this rubbish you're watching now?' every time they'd catch me or my brother watching Dragonball or whatever anime was popular at the time, have pretty much come to accept that it's not just for kids.

Your site is great as it is, and no way 'creepy'; a bit ecchi at times in terms of the figures, but hey, my room is almost as "bad" xD I don't care what other people think, I will live my life the way I like it as long as I'm not harming anyone else.

Just one persons comment, don't let it bother you too much.

different people have different views XD

I find blythe creepy @.@ my fellow female friends find them ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE xD whenever they talk about blythe tho i dun shun from it, but instead i tell them some little things about blythe i might have picked up from some sites i've visited about designer toys and such. You don't have to shun away from things u dislike, but accept that people see things differently as much as you.

They find figuirines pointless tho because i can't dress them up xP differing opinions, but they did share some sites with me on figs and such, and thats how i discovered foo-bar-baz xD

    It's a beautiful relationship T_T
