Greetings From Germany title=

Been up since 2AM. Body clock still on Japan time.
Brought some Melatonin to help with Jet lag but its not working this time round. I know some lucky folks who never get jet lagged. Do you get jet lagged and if so what do you do to cope with it?

Greetings From Germany title=

A few pics taken up to my arrival in Hamburg. This was taken at Narita airport. The translation in English for this one is quite bad - "Please respect our chefs and refrain from bringing food or drink into the table." What they actually meant is "don't bring food from other shops." Their translation sounds like you are not allowed to eat at the dining table ^^;

Greetings From Germany title=

BLT for B'fast.

The lovely Kaho spotted at the airport bookshop. Kaho showing us her lovely smile below.

The Lufthansa food is rather yummy.

Catching up on backlog of shows - Ninomiya-kun, Minamike-okawari, Mop Girl, Macross and Geass. Macross is just so awesome.
The scene where Ranka does "Watashi no kareshi was Pilot" was so nostalgic.
Original "Watashi no kareshi wa pilot" by Min Minmay below.

Ranka version below.
Original remix below.

Hamburg looks strangely like downtown Quebec, with its strange mix of classic architecture restored and kept proper, yet dotting in with modern where they could fit it in.

Bonus points for the BLT Breakfast.

You're making me crave that right now. ._.

Oh, and I didn't even answer your question.

I go on international flights now and then for work (and sometimes for play), and as strange as it may sound, I found that drinking a fair amount of water keeps lag at bay. I find it makes the body feel refreshed and less ill.

I'm lucky enough that I rarely feel jet lag but at times it does get to me. If I feel it getting strong, I usually chill the lag out with a pepsi or coke. I don't know why it works, it just does for me!

Nice pics - do people ever give you funny looks when you play with your Haruhi in public places?

Weather looks great - its unusually warm here in the UK now. Hope the weather is good for when i go to Berlin at the end of the month...

As for the jetlag question? I dont. I can never sleep on a plane, so i get bleary eyed, but im normally so excited when i get to my destination (usually Tokyo!) i feel awake again. Im sure ive gone over 24 hours without sleep on an average long haul trip.

Aspirin works great against jetlag- but you need to take it the day before you fly already. It thins your blood, and makes it easier for your body to adjust.

get on plane, take off, straight hit the sack, occasionally wake up for meal , sleep again, arrive at destination = no really jetlag
so try sleeping all the way back, that might help?? unless you are keen on the air stewardess

Germany... has Otaku shops? ^^; I guess it depends of the kind of Otaku, in case of Japan things i would always hit Düsseldorf... as for anime, figures, etc. ... order in Japan, german retailers suck... i don't know if it has become better over the past few years but back the days i didn't have any wire to Japan they sold NGE all 26 Episodes on 3 DVDs 1 Layer for 300+ Euros - total rip off... and the employees at that shop were underpaid too. I have lost my faith since then in germany and anime related goodies. ;)

I usually don't get any jet lag when travelling westwards, especially on flights in the night (for example Hong Kong -> Zurich departs 23:00 in HKG and arrives 06:00 in ZRH), provided that you can get some sleep on the plane. For me, it just feels like a long night.

In the other direction though, it's more difficult to cope with. The most important thing is not to fall asleep until night and wake up in the morning on the next day, no matter how tired you are. More or less a hard reset on your biological clock :). I can say from experience that failing to do so wreaks havoc on you biological clock.

One other thing I usually do is setting all my clocks (watch, ipod, psp etc.) to the destination time and think in that time as soon you board the plane.

Jet lag? I don't think I experienced it so far.
    When I get tired I wash my face or drink some water or even crack my neck and other joints (Ouch? Nah, I'm used to it). If these techniques still don't work, it means I'm really tired. Then I take a nap if the conditions allow me. ^^;

"Please respect our chefs and refrain from bringing food or drink into the table."... They rather mean "Don't act like a darned cheapskate to us, with your tourist status. You could afford yourself a plane ticket and all but you make yourself a scrooge when it comes to overpriced food. Now, cough the dough, pretty please?". XD

I wonder if there are people that enjoy plane food as much as I do. Looks nice and yummy indeed!

So, how's continental Europe so far? With Haruhi around I got no doubts you're doing well.

Hmm....jetlag, not really affected by it, at most will take me about 1-2 days to adapt. One possible method I could think to fight jetlag is to either make yourself very tired and keep wake, then when you reach you sleep there (for night arrivals); or you keep yourself awake the day before no sleep, then go on snooze all the way on the flight there (if you're arriving in the morning).

At the best for your presentation and enjoy the trip!!

I haven't ever suffered from jetlag, however when travelling I don't sleep on the flight (except maybe a little if it's at an appropriate time for the time zone I'm entering) and make sure not to sleep at the point of arrival until it's a reasonable time to be sleeping too.. As long as the first time I sleep is in sync with the new area's timezone I'll be fine the rest of the trip.

Ah, jetlag, something I've never managed to escape from except this once when I tried sleeping pills. I slept for 10 out of 13 hours, and even missed breakfast. Not doing that again.

Personally, the most important thing to preventing getting jetlag is sleep, since you don't really have to worry about adapting to timezones. Well, again, I've failed to do this out of my 10+ long flights. Restlessness does some funny things to you.

My body clock has been out of kilter for a long time now. I usually do not go to sleep until 5:00 am [GMT - 6]. Watching the 2002 World Cup was what really did it. The day we defeated Mexico in the round of sixteen, I didn't go to sleep for 30 hours.
I really do not get affected by jet lag. I do manage to drift off to sleep at some point during the twelve-hour flight to Tokyo.
Did you order a special meal from Lufthansa, Danny? I generally order the kosher meal when on American. I'm not really kosher (and I wind up eating a lot of pork in Tokyo, mostly via ramen), but I would rather not have a sausage biscuit as the breakfast on the flight.

Well Danny, my advice for overcoming jetlag won't help you much as you're in Germany already. You're suppose to stay awake no matter what until evening destination time upon arrival. Then wake up early morning and your body should be tired from fatigue by next evening making the adjustment much easier.

Usually I have no trouble with jetlag going to. Probably cause I'm excited to be in a new place. Going home is another matter as I'm relaxed and sleeping in my own bed. My body gives in to sleep at the drop of a pin.

The key is to follow the timezone on whatever at your destination. Try to sleep if you arrive during night time and don't sleep if you arrive in the morning/afternoon even though you are very tired.

That way your body will be adjusted accordingly and more easily.

Hamburg seems to be a nice place. Would love to go there and visit one day ^__^.

Anyways, when I went to Japan, it was only them I got to know what JetLag is.

And I did have long trips before...

But well, Brazil to Japan is probably among the longest plane travels and the most radical fuse changes out there.

I had headaches for the first week, and felt weak and sleepy.

May not sound much, but for someone like me who is completely used to sleeping at random hours (ranging from 22pm to 11am)...

I really don't know what caught me, but it was kinda bad. Affected some of my relatives too, but not all of them.

My mom didn't have problems with jetlag, but she caught a cold as soon as we got to Japan... it was very cold, she's kinda sensible to it...

The easiest way for me to avoid jet lag is to remain awake the entire flight, all the way up until a proper time to go to sleep at the destination. Unless you arrive at your destination in the morning (meaning a long day ahead of you) I think it's easier than trying to catch some z's on the plane (unless you've got some swank seating assignment).

I find that I only feel jetlag if I sleep on the plane to my destination. If i stay awake, i'm plenty tired by the time my destinations sleep time rolls around and I slip into a normal sleeping pattern thus avoiding being jetlagged for the most part of my trip.

I also saw someone posted drinking pepsi/cola ... That does seem to work for me as well. I think it's just the caffein in general will pep you up and get your through the initial first day of jet lag.

It's funny that when I go to Japan, I don't ever get jetlag maybe cuz there are so many things to do in short time that my body knows and act accordingly. But once I get back to USA, I get horrible fatigue for about a week so I guess it's then my body releases all the toxins(?) it has been blocking or something -_-

Have fun in Germany, those big German sausages look awesome :P

I'm happy to say I don't get jet lag. Although the biggest time difference that I've experienced is about 4 to 5 hours. I'll see how I hold up when I go to London and Rome in June. Any places you think I should visit when I'm in London Danny?

Woah......that airline food looks so much better than the...the....poo that we get fed on QANTAS flights.

I love japanese to english translations. It is really funny when clothing and pencil cases etc, have these little sayings on them in English and they never make any sense. It is so cute.

I kind of think jetlag is a myth. I mean, of course you'll be awake if you slept the entire time on the plane and you arrive at 10pm...

I check to see what local time I'll be arriving, and time my sleepiness to be appropriate. I just came back from Paris, and I was arriving at 8pm local time, so I decided to sleep for most of the flight but stay awake for the other half so I'd be slightly sleepy by the time I got here. I had just enough energy to unpack and go to bed. Woke up bright and early the next day.

i never get jet-lagged. I blame it on my bad (or probably highly adaptable) sleeping habits. I've never had to suffer headaches or disorientation

Had terrible 4 days of jetlag going from UK > Tokyo. Easier going the other way, if you get morning flight from Tokyo and get to UK in mid-afternoon it just feels like unusually long day.

i've never really experienced jet lag, although thats mostly because I don't travel far (mostly Sydney to Singapore).

Why don't you pop by Amsterdam and give you're dolphin a good workout after Germany for all the hard work that you've done since you're already in Europe ;).

Yes I will get jet lag, and I have to overcome that on my trip to Japan.

Whatever you are eating with the french fries earlier in the post (not the frank!) looks really good.

Enjoy Germany! It's a lot like Pennsylvania, but it's the real thing :).

I never get jet lagged on any trip which is a good thing as my body adapts easily. I don't like very long trips though especially on a plane as the seats tend to be really small unless your in business class or first class which most of the time I'm not in. heheh! Germany is just a few hours away from here in Sweden. I saw Hamburg from the sky on my way here too.

Every time I return from Japan I get horrible jetlag. Not sure why. On the way there I am fine though.

Flying in business class 70% of the time with the 180 degree lie-flat seats does help though. ;)

That's a nice hotel room you have in Germany. Comparable hotel in Tokyo would be at least 30,000 yen I'd imagine. And it would be smaller too!

Scientists determined the human body tolerates a flight from West to East better than the inverse one.
your case would then be a nice example of this phenomenon.
Earth's way of rotation in cause maybe?

Just drink heavily on the plane and once you arrive. Pass out, wake up. It turns from 'jet lag' into a hang over and can be battled accordingly.

It feels way more natural to feel like s**t and have a reason. Sitting on a plane for 17 hours just doesn't seem like enough justification.
