Anime Haters

According to this poll at Japan Probe, 31% of their readers (who took the poll) are scared of anime fans - quite a large number which prompted me to search for "anime hater" - to my surprise, I find that there are quite a few folks out there who really hate anime - they also hate folks who watch anime too.

One of the first search results was for a "anime sucks" petition which has comments like...

"Anime is lame and TOTALLY GAY!!!! It is made for Japanese school girls and pervy old men. If you are niether of the former and you like anime, then you are gay and should be ashamed of yourself."

"I agree with this with all my heart! Death to ANIME!!!"

"If your over the age and still watch anime your a pathetic loser. that SH#T needs to stay in japan."

"Anime is the reason why every good cartoon from here in america and all the world have gone down in ratings and been forced to be cancelled,Damn you Japan and your stupid alien bug-eyed girls with big breasts and mini skirts!"
And if you are interested in hearing more from anime haters then the search terms "anime sucks" brings up 41,000 results.

The lady below talks about her hate for "anime obsessed creatures" - she disabled video embedding so you need to go you YouTube to watch it.

RoastedSand would like to "share his rant" with you below.
Brad below talks about how "Anime is stupid in my opinion."
And hulkamainiac92 has some advice for anime fans below.

While I respect the opinions of others, I do find it interesting that some folks dislike other folks for hobbies or interests that one may have - reminds me of the hate mail I get telling me how I shouldn't be spending my money on figures or writing about Japan.

I didn't know about this subject until I done that search - was you aware of anime hating and what do you make of it?

BTW, the group of Haruhi on the desk is just some of the Haruhi figures I have - one more in the car. Uploaded to the wallpaper pool.

Oh and that petition just reminded me - please do not post gay-ist comments - we should not use language that discriminates against folks who are gay/straight, black/white, male/female, prefer 2D/3D girls etc ^^

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

I dont hate these people, I just am indifferent to their existence. I guess its true that the opposite of love is not hate, its indifference. I think its sad that they are so closed minded, and honestly, I dont care if they dont like what I watch/read/eat/think/do... Maybe thats why Im happy and they will be miserable?

We just can't get everyone to like anime, different cultures and others are too much of a barrier.

But bashing anime fans can't really be justified. Bashing itself is wrong, it discourages constructive discussion and prevents understanding of one another, in my opinion.

True. These haters are just a dying breed of characteristic American bigotry. Along with their outmoded mind-set of pro-American cartoons, you can just see the arrogance that their so-called "culture" festers! It's always the Americans who strike first in trivial matters like these.

As for the Haruhi picture, looks cool! :)
I never wanted figures for real, but since i started to read your site and saw how much fun you can have with them and a camera i start to ponder... ^^; Maybe in two months when my wallet allows me fun-things again (after my 32gb ipod touch, new laptop, new camera and soon japan-day in düsseldorf i am broken for some time bahhh~~)
As for the Anime-hater topic... well i have meet people who said it is "stupid child stuff" cause it's drawn and they compare it to Disney and so on.
Some of those folks i even could get into anime after a nice discussion without being mean or such, i did show them an example of a good anime (nice animation, good story and music etc. we all know there are enough ^^v) and they did show interest in it and eventually went on with their own path into this world of fun. ;)
I didn't meet (lucky me) the hardcore anime-hater yet and i maybe don't want to either, least none of the kind you gave as example.
There are a lot of groups out there which are being hated for whatever reason, car clubs... bike clubs... music bands... you will find always people who think it's stupid or whatever.
My solution for this kind of hardcore-haters is ignore, if they can't put up a good discussion and just rant pointlessly... no thanks.
Also... i might pitty them a bit, i am very sure that most of them don't know what they are missing out on... i mean just the stories of some animes are so good, put aside that it's an anime and from japan and whatsoever... the core - the story - is a thing which is unrelated to the medium it's being told with.
Just the stories of some animes did enrich my life by a lot, like 5cm/s or "Hoshi no Koe" just to name two examples which i do like a lot - not only for their quality but mainly for the story which is so touching... simply put it's really good art and i respect the creative people behind it a lot.
All together, i personaly have many reasons why i like anime and will most likely go on with it no matter what untill i see the light at the end of the tunnel - also no matter what other people say. :)

Some samples of American animation are good (my favorite being adaptations of comics -X-Men, JLU...- and those made by Warner Studios -Tiny Toons, Animaniacs- but even insanely random stuff like My Fairly Oddparents, Samurai Jack, The Powerpuff Girls or Atomic Betty... Yeah, really random), but they have to be well-done in terms of aesthetics and all... No, in fact the most annoying type of cartoons I stumble upon are those which focus not on being either useful or a sarcastic view of society, but a collection of "pee pee-poo poo" jokes and mockery and stereotypes overuse.
But hey, it's just me. I gave up on TV anyway.

D_Blade, I agree. I get tired of that kind of anime, or too much fanservice (one word?). It gets wearing, and turns otherwise excellent animes into crap (even the ridiculous faces in Rouroni Kenshin sp?, or Trigun) But, some people like this stuff, so thats good that there is something they like to watch! Now we can all enjoy our brand of anime. Also, HI! How are you mon frere?

Well, about fanservice addicts, whatever floats their boat (anime can be good with a sprinkle of fanserv', but it can quickly become tasteless when there is too much of low angling action)...
...Whereas for flamers, they should not focus on this precise genre of anime. Did you notice that haters, when criticizing a particular thing, always tend to focus on the most extreme genres rather than the average ones (for videogames = GTA and for anime = School Days, etc.)?

All I can say about animation created by American creators vs. Japanese creators is that it's DIFFERENT. Different cultural milieu, different attitudes, different environment. Actually some of my favorite long-form animation has come out of places other than either the US or JP: if you want to get your mind blown check out "Persepolis," "Waltz With Bashir," "Renaissance" and "The Triplets of Belleville." "Bashir" is from Israel, and the other three movies are from France, although "Belleville" was done with Canadian assistance and "Persepolis" is about a young woman growing up in Iran.

The Japanese animation industry does have its roots in the US animation industry, particularly in the Fleischer Studio which produced Koko the Clown, Betty Boop, Popeye and the first Superman shorts. Betty Boop in particular is an interesting case study in that she was the first animated star in Japan, so much so that the Fleischers did a special cartoon, "A Language All My Own" that featured Betty visiting Japan and singing in both English and Japanese. The cartoon is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8U7jyBkxH8 . Actually the rumor among American cartoon fans is that the Japanese lyrics are a tad ecchi. It would be cool to get a direct translation from someone so inclined.

Grim Natwick's character design of Betty Boop wound up inspiring people like Tezuka Osamu to create their own design theories, and Tezuka even based his studio's workflow on that of the Fleischer Studio.

The major difference between American animation and Japanese animation is that American animation executives still consider animation to be "kidvid." Primarily geared towards children. The reason why Japanese animation is so rich and diverse is that in Japan, animation is considered CINEMA. We're learning here, but we're still a little backward. Some of the best moments for US animation was when the dictum that animation = kid stuff was forgotten. The great Warner Bros. theatrical shorts of the '30s, '40s and '50s happened because they were considered fit fare for adults too, and gags were structured accordingly. The pioneering MTV Animation miniseries like The Maxx, Aeon Flux, Beavis & Butthead and Daria were written for adults. Ren & Stimpy was very inspired by the classic era of Warner Bros. and therefore the cartoons were written to be enjoyed on multiple levels, for adults as well as kids. And ever since Batman: The Animated Series the DC series were designed to be similarly multi-level, geared towards everyone from kids to adults, and intended to even please comics fans who are notoriously particular.

Animation is a form of filmmaking. It's cinema. It can do everything live-action can do, and most importantly MORE. When American audiences realize this, there will be an animation renaissance here the likes of which nobody has seen.

Oh yeah, one of the most awesome animated features I have seen recently is called Sita Sings The Blues. http://www.sitasingstheblues.com/ Nina Paley animated the movie SOLO over 5 years hunched over a string of Macs and several versions of Flash. Because of some really retarded music publishing issues she can't get wide distribution for it but it's worth seeking out.

These people are just idiotic misanthropes, attention whores, who want page views. I personally think that it's absolutely childish and bereft of intelligence to attack something someone likes to the point where you actually start making forums around it, posting around it, making videos around it? They're going to call someone pathetic for liking something, but then they're going to comment on how much they don't like what the person likes? That's ludicrous! I like Youtube, but every little pretentious pseudo-intellectual thug with a video camera thinks they're a director or a pundit now. Oh yeah, and that girl that called us "anime obsessed creatures" should take a look in the mirror, pretentious little bitch.

I'm a type of person who wants to understand what others like or hate. If people hate anime and alike, that's is fine and I understand as long as they don't force their belief onto me such as I should hate anime because of what they believe is right.

I might have mountains of art books and doujinshis at home, but I try to do other stuffs like go to movies, karaoke and other normal hobbies as well. People should not just judge of who I am just because I like anime and such. But you will run into some extreme haters that will not be reasonable and that can't be helped -_-

Ah I've run into this a whole lot. People just seem to be influenced by society to think that anime is immature or that it's only for kids. People also don't seem to have good judgment of what "good" animation is as opposed to bad animation. They seem to think that if it's animated it should have short jokes and sketches and not a deep, interesting plot. It's just one of the world's, and especially america's, typical stereotypes. People seem to hear about it and get brainwashed by their peers and such to think that this stereotype is what's "right".

I could go on and on about this but I won't for now, I will just say this; I have run into the "anime hater" type of people very often and they generally seem to be the closed minded type of people, I let them have their opinion and I respect that but I don't have to accept it myself and I never will.

The ironic thing with most of the anti-anime petitions is that most of the people who sign the online petition are people who like anime and just want to leave angry comments, so these things are never really as popular as they seem. It's also funny that people go out of their way to complain about something that doesn't really effect them, especially when they say people who like anime have no lives, yet they find the time to do things like that.

I agree. For everything positive, there will be something negative.

I haven't personally come across any anime haters in my local area and/or travels, but they're out there.

Although you can see from the URL for the petition the title of "animesucksass", it illustrates the level of maturity people like that. They thrive on the conflicts they create with others, I refuse to give people that satisfaction.

I especially liked the comment about western animation series getting cancelled because of anime. What a laugh...

Usually, these people hide behind keyboards, but now with youtube, a small vocal minority gets quite visible.

OP and ED themes are a lost art in American series. It used to be different. Just ask anybody over the age of 30 what their favourite theme was and they'll be able to sing it ...but the show they're talking about will be from early 90's at least. The last "memorable theme song" to me is from a sitcom called Cheers and that was in the 80's! I think producers today just think people don't have the patience for theme songs anymore and just want to get to the show.

My faves are the OP and ED for Ren & Stimpy. I'm biased because the guy who played guitar on them is a good friend of mine. You can't help but be geeked for R&S after you hear that awesome Rockabilly jam getting everything started. Good recent themes for cartoons were the one for The Tick, (not the live action series) the King of the Hill theme, and "You're Standing On My Neck," the theme song for Daria. Oh yeah, and ALL the music from The Twisted Tales of Felix The Cat. Wild stuff that was recorded LIVE for each episode by the Club Foot Orchestra of San Francisco, CA. We don't do good POP themes but if you get beyond pop there are some good ones, particularly in the '90s.

I'm fine with others not enjoying what gives me pleasure, but i thought anime had spread to a point where it was starting to be viewed as a legitimate artistic medium. Hayao Miyazaki's work has received many awards, including an Academy Award for Spirited Away.

So if any of you ever encounter an anime hater, then recommend him/her to watch Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, etc. If they still think anime is childish, perverted, and lacking talent then they must be insane!!!!!!

Heh-- the problem is that idiots like them don't know the difference between Japan and China! It sounds crazy to us, of course, but it's true! My fiancee is from Japan, and she regularly gets questions like-- "So are you from Hong Kong?" and "What does that say?" (while pointing to a sign displayed in a Chinatown souvenir shop. Sighhhhhh. If there's anything I hate, it's stupid people.

Also-- I found this piece of Danny's post to be particularly funny: "Anime is the reason why every good cartoon from here in america and all the world have gone down in ratings" LOL! If it was truly "good" wouldn't it's ratings go UP?? Maybe it's just me....

I used to loath anime with an ungodly passion untill about my last year of highschool when I spent some time sitting next to an Otaku in physics (yes, I was a geek, just didn't like anime). Long story short: he pushed Hellsing on me and well... look where that led.

Interestinly I can actually vaugly relate to the first girl as people who seem to belive that anime/manga/Japan start and end with Naruto get on my nerves as well. People wanting to scream their love to the heavens, sure, fine... but not my style.

Most of these hate-comments are mostly talking about one genre of anime. People are always so single-sided. I think there's so much more diversity in anime than in american cartoons. American cartoons are almost always directed to children while anime is not. (correct me if I'm wrong...)
Anime has got horror stories, serious drama, any sport you can imagine, etc.
Okay, there is a lot of violence, but also a lot of comedy. And don't tell me that american movies or South Park don't have violence, kids watch that anyway. (I love South Park btw) So why hate anime cause it has violence??

And big-eyed girls should stay in Japan? Remember Micky Mouse and Betty Boob? That's what inspired the japanese in the first place.
And school girls in (mini-)skirts? Well, that happens to be the actual school outfit in Japan ;p

That's my rant, and I don't hate american cartoons, I just prefer japanese anime.

we anime enthusiasts (i.e. otakus) might be considered as a social outcast by the "ordinary" people but we have to accept it 'coz there are some people who simply doesn't understand on what we love and spend money on and what one doesn't understand always resulted to fear and anger.

some of us would opt to educate these "ordinary" people about our hobby but imho it would be pointless if these people are not open-minded to the idea.

i had my fair share of people who doesn't understand my hobby and get some comments from them (harsh or not) but i don't listen to them and continued on what i love.

Ever notice how those Anime haters talk sort of slow? Amazing isn't it. Did you see the comment from RoastedSand? I wonder where this idiot came up with that name. Notice how slow he talks. Well people are free to dislike anime (or anything else they so desire) and are free to voice their opinion about it, just as those who do like it (such as us) are free to like it and voice our opinion about it.
Although I must say it's quite funny to see the well thought through and eloquent opinions of the 'anime haters' used as an example here. Please, if you want to voice an opinion on something, try to study the subject and your language enough to be able to formulate decent phrases. Because rants without coherent thoughts, phrases or structure make you sound idiotic or like someone who's just seeking attention for the sake of attention.

I personally do not understand why people like to watch sports (like soccer, football) and band together in stadiums filled to the brim to indulge in copious amounts of alcoholic beverages until their state of drunken stupor or barbaric hormonal urges degenerate into violence or other idiotic behaviour.
(No offense meant to anyone here who may like participating in above activity.)

But I don't go around ranting about it or how 'it sucks'. To each his own, you know? You do your thing, I do my thing and we leave each other in peace about. That's how I see it anyway.

very true there are people who dislike anime. Though I find that most people who dislike anime is mostly due tot he fact they started on a wrong anime as their first introduction to anime. My believe if person wants to start watching anime and is a bit distant from some of the anime story lines then best solution is to ask someone who actually watches anime regularly for the best start off series.

the people who hate anime tend to be people who are quite ignorant of other people's coutures.
the anime haters i have encounterd don't actually hate anime but hate the overzealous fangirl/boys who only watch stuff like naruto and eat pocky... i've seen plenty of them, and they do tend to go overboard with the love of japan based solely on what they have seen from anime.
what i like about you're blog danny is that it gives more american fans a better understanding of japan and it's culture ,customs and people than most of us would ever get by just watching anime.
Another thing people who tend to hate anime see anime as cartoons, while the majority of us who love anime see it as a separate art form.

Danny, you timed this post really well. I swear you have a sixth sense for such things. ^o^

I think may be safe to talk about this now so...

Over the last few weeks I had a run in with one of these clowns. Well, this individual hated anything related to Japan. He picked me to be his target of affection. -.-# It was bad enough to need assistance from the authorities. I think everyone understand where I'm going with this comment... Also my attack first ask questions later behavior of late.

No one knows I watch anime, unless I tell someone. Just be careful everyone. There are a lot of sick people out there.

Anyway, I usually just ignore these kind of people. Didn't ask for or want their opinion. This is a big hobby for most of us and it's one of the things we do to relax.

We all have lives. Some of us are busy getting an education. Some of us are working hard to give ourselves and families a life without too much worries. I often find that people use the things others enjoy as an excuse to hate them. We all know it usually comes from a condition of the haters not being happy with themselves. I don't need to go on, we all understand this concept.

We don't need these people to validate our lives or hobbies.

Anime comes from China BY RoastedSand LOL sure thing he is funny~ hope he confirm things first before he let things out. Anyways, there's only 1 thing they are all missing in general : that anime is meant for ENTERTAINMENT - other thing they all share in common is : lack of reason - their reason is so slacking you just can ignore them the instant you get it. Well , I was expecting some busting rockets ready for a flame war but guess these guys just don't have enough fuel to ignite the bomb. peace~

I really didn't like Akira myself and I haven't seen Naruto because I probably won't rate it very high either.
I wonder if that tom&jerry guy saw anything else besides those two (perhaps even in english dub?).
But come on, there's a _lot_ good stuff out there.
I think we should just ignore those 'anime-haters'. Anime will take over the world eventually.

My best friend dislikes anime, so I don't talk much about it with him. Anime haters have been around for a while, and I don't understand their hatred towards anime... A week ago I got made fun of for watching anime by these two guys, which was weird.

so reading the comments, and watching the vid, what I found was that most comments are really
      -towards the American otaku
      -overly generalized
-think that the animation quality of Anime are poor compared to I don't know what in cartoons.

I am sorry, are these people really otakus and trying to make a satire, or are they just stupid making rash generalization of stuff

    this is sooooooooo sad...
i really feel sorry for these people... they wanna bash anime but they don't even know what they are really bashing... take roasted sand for a perfect example...
at 1st he says anime is japan then moves on to bash the chinese...*not making sense*, couldn't even pronounce the names right* not making sense again*, and just because he watched 1 eps of naruto*couldn't even pronounce the name right* went on to dismiss the whole series...
    1 word, shallow...
just sad... if american cartoons are soo good like what most of these people claim, then why isn't it impacting the world like japanese anime... don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good american cartoons out there but take a closer look at most of those cartoons...
most of the time you'll be able to find small traces of anime-like characteristics of all sorts in those cartoons and IMO these characteristics are what makes them so successful...
brad is just bored out of his mind as he clearly shows in his vid...
but i really pity *even though they are really not worth it* those people...
they are entitled to their *good* opinion about animes but its really not necessary to share them with the rest of the WWW *world wide web*...
personally i've yet to meet 1 anime hater...
feel kinda blessed to not meet 1 yet, but if i did would just completely ignore him/her and walk away...
no point in wasting my time arguing with them when i can use the time to watch anime from my pda phone...

I enjoyed laughing at how some of those videos held no weight in their reasons why anime sucks. Well except for one comment going on about Pockies, Sushi, and wearing costumes going "hey I'm Japanese" thing. Besides that I just put them in the ignore pile since they made no sense what so ever with their shallow opinions :P. Like someone said here its probably for comments and ratings to gather up.

Well I can still peacefully enjoy my anime while still trying to find the classic cartoons America used to be known for like Spider-man and Batman from the 1990's. I miss those American cartoons which have been downgraded. Heroes!

Well, people are entitled to their own opinion. If you like anime that's fine, it's your choice. If you hate anime, that's your choice too.

That said though, by hating someone for liking something you don't you are only hurting yourself. Hatred and misunderstanding limit your lifestyle and thus limits your balance, which is unhealthy.

I dislike playing team sports because there always seems to be one teammate that screws everything up for you. But I'd be fine playing sports with a few friends because I wouldn't have to take it as seriously as competitive sports.

I like to try anything regardless of what it may look like from the eyes of a spectator. I've done many things that wouldn't be considered 'manly' and most people would be ashamed to admit it. I watched the NANA movies and loved them both, despite being blatant chick-flicks. They are just good. Anything can be good, you just have to allow yourself to see that.

The way I see it, people around my area are too "cool" to watch anime. Thus never experience the Japanese culture of animation. I do believe Americans who choose to be ignorant will always see anime as just cartoons, and not an art form, a media that transcends time, with the ability to express far superior emotions than that of current American cartoons.

I can't think of any examples at the momment, but I'm absolutely sure Japanese animation, manga, etc has influenced American pop culture beyond any Anime Hater's expectations. Failing to recognize or appreciate such success through pure stubborness and arrogance is a good portrayal of their personality, and unwillingness to open up to another culture.

I don't walk around campus with Naruto headbands on, and I don't draw just anime looking characters, nor do I try to "convert" my friends to watching anime. It's just a simple part of my life, and something I enjoy. Why people must always be against something and always have to say something about it, is just not logical.

As a side note, I like how RoastedSand said "cartoons from Japan, these Chinese people make these cartoons" Very accurate statement, made a lot of sense.

It's a trend... you know, we have lots of them.
I personally know some anime haters, or to say the least, people who has some kind of prejudice against people who likes anime.

There are several stuff involved in these... one day I'll make a list.

Here in Brazil, there are those who know Anime only as "those japanese cartoons my kids watch". They label it childish.

There are some who thinks "Animes are all like Pokemon". Also label it childish.

And then, some who only seem a Saint Seya episode after they become adults (which I understand is kinda hard to like). So they label anime "badly made cartoons, with clunky animation and repetitive shallow stories". Not that Saint Seya is all that, but you gotta admit that watching a random episode might give that impression.

Some will just hate because most of his friends also do.

Some thinks that only because something is drawn (as in, not with real actors) it has to be for kids.

And then, some only had the bad luck of never watching an anime that fits his/her tastes. This is particularly easy to happen in Brazil since we have a very small officially released anime list, and most of them are targeted to a young audience.

And then, there's the media. They usually only write or talk about japanese animation with kids going crazy about it, or events where only kids show up.... or to show some crime relation, and some other bad stuff.

But really, you know what? I'm kinda ok with all that. One of the things that I like in Anime is that it's not yet mainstream. And one of the things I fear most is that it's becoming mainstream, to the point where Hollywood is making movies based on them, and some anime are having the same problems as american cartoons and series: Sometimes you just can tell they are doing it only for the money.

Anyways, I wrote too much already. But it's a looong discussion...

I think some people that hate anime have not watch the good series or movies such as Spirt Away,The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tales from Earthsea, Princess Mononoke, and etc.
The purpose of anime I think is that they focus on telling us a story just like ciitematic movies. I can not understand why people can not forget about the real world for 30min to 3hrs and indulge them self in a story. We all like stories since we are a liitle kids. I been critize for watch anime cause of my age, but when i let them borrow spirit away, Rin Roh ( Wolf Briage) they have nothing to say. I think american cartoon and anime are quite similar too and i respect both of them. Another great anime move that I just watch was Sword of a Stranger and I recommended watching it.

i have no expirence with any anime haters. but sometimes when i am at the japanese markets i try not to act too dorky when i see certain things <_<. i find that here in new york, anime really appeals across age and economic class. my husband is a high school teacher and he has seen all types of students that love anime/manga (most you would never guess to be fans, like really rough looking kids reading Yostuba&).
I can understand that anime is right now edging into the mainstream and more people are taking notice. so there will be people who sees it as some kind of encroachment into their world. but seriously, it's like fighting high tide. the more anime getting exposed in western media, the more people will be drawn into it. there was a time before The Simpsons when they thought all cartoons were meant for saturday mornings and grade school children.
i guess i can see in japan where otaku culture may be very pervasive, but everyone is exposed to the same amount of anime. they cant actually be blaming the anime? they all watch it, a lot of tv and movies they have are based on anime/manga. they cant be having the same kind of anime haters?

We all dislike something, and unfortunatly some people don't know how to behave like normal people or when to be quiet.

Since anime is part of the culture of Japan, I would say that people who are discrimnatory towards anime are being racist. I'm not saying people who dislike anime "are racist". Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and really they should keep it to themselves.

I don't like Green Army Men or Barbies, and I have reserved opinions on the subjects, but you don't see me going around and blabbing usually obscene things about them.

The best thing to do is ignore these kinds of people, because unfortunatly there are many out there "who don't like change", and usually these kinds of folks are in that category.

I wouldn't let other people's opinions affect your enjoyment of anime or what the industry has to offer. It's best to laugh at them! because they will never understand, and they don't want to.

Unfortunately these people mostly reference their dislike from sources like Cartoon Network, which I believe is trying to sabtage Anime's popularity in the US. Since they do have HORRIBLE Voices, it's censored like hell, and generally bad. I think that if I actually started Naruto with the Dub version and have had little or no previous experience with anime I might have the same opinion as these people.

I loved this part. Anime sucks alright, so much so that the majority of people seems to like it over what's done in america and other parts of the world. They got cancelled because anime is evil!!!!

I pay no attention to posts like the above, they are just meaningless rants, and nothing more. Give me facts to support your argument, and I MAY consider it. Regardless, it's an opinion against another. I watch anime, I pay for my anime, and I use my money to get Japan stuff, keyword being "my" ^^.

    just my 2 cents here.

My friend at work absolutely despises anime. He has nothing against american made cartoons (Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, etc.), but he just has some bizarre hatred for all things anime. He won't even explain to me why he hates it. He just flat out refuses to watch any kind of anime, in any form. He doesn't even like videogames where the characters "look like anime characters". It's very strange.

Can't see the point why some people would hate anime.

There is a saying and it goes:

"As long as it does not cause evil or harm to you and other people, be happy with what you do or believe in."

I think those haters should think about it.

As much as I agree, there lies a problem.

Some people complain about the contents of stuff directly instead of using their brain & just switching the channel & telling their kid "You can't watch this". Every so often, some idiot (like Jack Thompson, who complains about video games (if ya don't know, look him up. 99% of games HATE him)), looks TOO deep into stuff & then tries to make it look bad or falsly accuse it like Fox News did w/ Mass Effect (again, look up if don't know). Anime Haters are guilty of this because they believe anime is either 2 stereotypical things in their eyes:

1.) OMG YOU WATCH POKEMON & OTHER KIDDY SHOWS!

2.) EWWWW YOU LIKE ANIMATED PORN!!

Thankfully, there ARE people who defend stuff like this (like for video games, Brain Age & the Wii). I still agree w/ that saying, I just believe that there's people like me who can prove that wrong.

    Here's what I think:

1.) Why the hell do those guys care that people like anime? Let us live our own life & we'll let you live yours. It's that simple.

2.) They complain it's a waste of time. Yeah, sure not wasting time complaining about something you can't do anything about.

3.) Gee, sorry for being different & liking something YOU DON'T. Please, tell me how I can be EXACTLY LIKE YOU. Don't let me be unique.

4.) Have they got an actual reason as to WHY that actually makes sense?

5.) Have they ever bothered to sit down & actually watch an anime series that ISN'T a stereotype (say, (I apologize in advance if I offend anyone) Pokemon, Dragonball, an "OMG ANIME IS JUST ANIMATED PR0N!!" title, etc.) that always gets mentioned instead of great stuff?

6.) Anime = Japanese for "cartoon". So what, I can't watch Simpsons or Spongebob, cuz technically, in Japan, they're anime, so therefore the guys complaining hate every cartoon ever made?!?!

7.) I've got a idea. STOP COMPLAINING & YOU GET A HOBBY! WE ACTUALLY HAVE ONE THAT MILLIONS OF OTHER PEOPLE LIKE! WE DON'T CARE YOU HATE SOMETHING WE LIKE! WE DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT STUFF YOU LIKE, NOW DO WE?!?! (yeah, I know, we're complaining about them complaining....They started it)

8.) Now, tell us. If anime was made in America instead of Japan, would you like it?

9.) Another thought. What if cartoons made in America were actually made in Japan & Japan cartoons were really made in America? Would you complain that American cartoons suck?

10.) (experience from school) So being a dude who likes woman, despite some being from anime, is considered GAY?! So what, that makes 2 men who like eachother straight?!

Sorry, I just get mad when people hate stuff for no reason whatsoever. Anime is just one of those things that people hate for no reason. I think I've only really met 1 person that I actually had to have class with that didn't approve anime/manga. Most people I know just consider it "wierd" (mostly cuz I show them wierd footage)

eg: underdogs vs superdogs in a baseball game who do you support? 50% will say underdogs! the 50% superdogs.get the logic? all i can say its a matter of preferance people a matter of prefarance.so its normal if you encouter those who like anime as well as those who hate anime for everyone has their whims and fancys.

the anime "haters" are the same like other haters, usually the things they hate do not interfere with their daily lifes, they just seem to hate things for no apparent reason.
I did say one of the reason is because they are unable to understand and comprehend the things they hate and its kind of human nature to fear and hate the things you don't understand/can't comprehend. (notice how the examples in the videos seem to have hardly any knowledge about anime?)
as for the bashers, all I could say is that they seem to lack critical reasoning skills,
they don't seem to bother to do research nor go further in-depth (one episode and they know the whole series sucks?)(all animes are like naruto?)
the information they have are flawed (chinese=from japan? japan=communist?)
in my personal opinion, that roastedsand guy seems to think that bashing anime makes him look cool.
btw, some anime fans can be really annoying at times..

Well...Those videos don't really make me upset but rather instill in me a sense of pity for those who cannot construct an argument. I don't care that they are "Anime Haters"...in fact good for them. However, if they are going to bash on Anime they better bring their facts to the table and not just their shallow minded opinions. Opinions that they repeat over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again in the same video. Yes I do like to hear many different sentences you morons so stop stuttering. GIVE ME REASON!! I'd like to insert a sentence of swear words here to display my annoyance at their repetition. But, I shall refrain. (Ok, so maybe I am a little angry in addition to pitying...) If they want to say Anime sucks they better understand what it is, WHERE it comes from, and its history first. This way maybe then they can avoid the unavoidable stereotypical "American" ignorance of calling the Japanese, Chinese. *BIG SIGH* They are two entirely different countries full of two different peoples...WITH TWO VERY DIFFERENT PASTS! No, despite what you may think...the Brazilians speak PORTUGUESE not SPANISH!! Wait you probably didn't know that Brazil existed...sorry...I forgot that you didn't have any maps handy. And who the hell is to say that an Anime enthusiast doesn't buy KISS dvds, listen to Wu-Tang, and wash his/her Corvette?! I love Corvettes (Stingrays are my favorite..) and I do listen to classic rock (Rush is pretty awesome). Piss Ants, stop ruining America for me! If I could hook you up to a machine all day that automatically fed you fish sticks, wiped your rear end, and let you watch a never ending marathon of Tom and Jerry...THEN!? MAYBE THEN YOU WOULD YOU STOP BEING UNPATRIOTIC FOOLS! America doesn't need and doesn't want idiots like you speaking LET ALONE GIVING YOUR OPINION ON A GIVEN SUBJECT, ESPECIALLY IN HER NAME! Oh, and one more thing I hope those people are sure to throw out all of their home appliances (you know all that stuff they got from Walmart because it was just sooo cheap) that were made in China because it definitely supports communism. But that's the problem, that's all they have are shallow-minded arguments. They ARE SHALLOW lol =). That's why "cartoons are for kids and you should be ashamed of yourself" passes for a valid argument. You live here, you should know how little water most peoples' pools have in them, rofl. I don't mean to be pretentious at all when I say this, but I think anime -- real anime -- is too high-minded a concept for most people. Just because something has boobs and guns doesn't mean it doesn't have a good plot/story. People think that hentai is anime, people think that pokemon is anime. And while they ARE, it just shows how shallow the western majority's tastes are, even when it comes to what a lot of them hate. And about the last part, it's all convenient truth (read: hypocrisy and ignorance). They have no qualms about accepting things when they help them and are cheap in this case with the appliances, but whenever something offends their sensibilities they have no problem with going so far as being racist to keep the problem out of their lives. That's the basis for most people's weak moral fiber =P.

    Sigh, I had a big post written but for some reason I kept getting a "vegan.net" page about http headers being more than 4kbyte or something? And I don't feel like rewriting it, nor can I remember most of it. It was basically the same as a lot of others' here, anytime there is something popular you'll have people that hate it etc. These people are obviously misanthropes, ignorant and racist or pretentious assbags. They seem cloistered and hostile towards anything that threatens their narrow world view. And yeah, I bet you most of them are "amurican" (surprise, surprise). Anywhere there's a forum for the public, like Youtube, I've noticed that people get the "telephone toughguy" (like where a normal, timid person screams at someone on the phone because they have no danger of getting hit) syndrome, where you're anonymous or untouchable, so you say whatever you want because you're a malcontent or a misanthrope. As I've said before, I like to believe that people aren't mostly bad, but I know better. Your average person is ignorant, of sub-normal intelligence and will rant and rave in all of the space/time they're alloted about anything that threatens their small existence. It's just kinda sad that they have to take it out on the rest of us that try and broaden our horizons. These people all seem really cloistered and unintelligent anyway, and I hate to say it (no I don't), but most of them seem to be american. What kills me is that it's a HOBBY, subjective, totally. You're going to chastise somebody because they like something that they, um, like, and you don't? Again, pathetic. The joke's on them though, let them be unhappy and pissed off and try and control people, they'll make fine bigot republican'ts someday, and we'll all be happy enjoying what we like in life and maybe even generating a little racial harmony in the process ^^;

I agree with what you've said. Seems we have a lot of synonymous qualms with these loons. What gets me is that these guys are generating hate under the name of America. And yet they have no cultural or historical perspective to be doing so. I'm saddened that this image of "America" is attractive to Americans. They think that being American means you are prejudice towards things manifested in foreign lands. Wrong, that was never American. For god sake this is a country founded by Immigrants. Those guys are probably Irish, German, or Welsh. If they want to be patriotic read in to the bloody and tumultuously short history of your own country. We've got a crazy past I wonder if that has jaded us so much that the only thing we can latch on to is a fake image of Americanism. Whatever that means anyway. On another note, you think these guys ever watched Speed Racer?

Danny - are you serious that people actually take the time to read your blog that don't like the subject matter, and then take further time to e-mail you and hate on you and your hobbies? I mean I believe it, but that's just beyond the pale of patheticness to take that much time out of your life to "study" something you don't like. I think that's called a sociopath? Slightly unfair. I buy figured and watch anime nonstop. But I don't eat poky sticks non stop, or sushi non stop. Ok I bought a bento box the other day but they are common right? I was just interested.
But yeah, what she said about most 'otaku's watching this naruto bullshit was completely right. Was on the bus home the other day. And a friend of mine who'd recently got into anime started talking to me about FMA. Now (without being big-headed, it's just relevant) that show I'd seen gawd-knows how long ago. I didn't say anything to him or correct him, but the thing that got me was the way when he quoted me the 'Something can be gained when something of equal value is lost' thing. 2 Other people on the bus jumped up and started shouting 'FULL METAL ALCHEMIST HOLY SHIT'.
Fine, fair enough. But then they started this whole contest to see who knew the most about it. *Hangs head in shame*

You'd be surprised WHO watches anime. I myself slowed down a bit on watching it (gets expensive when you want to buy the box sets and all). I watch the live dramas now and days, but I'd be damned if I lied about running out and buying the Devil May Cry anime, haha.

Here's a story. So I'm at my dentist getting some fillings (spelling?). Took about 3 hours 'cause I told them to do 'em all. Anyways, after 3 hours, and we're done I notice the dentist trying to get a better look at my t-shirt. Its black and just shows Golgo 13's eyes and says Loner in Kanji. He's like "your into that". I'm reply sure, not as much, but yea I watch a few here and there. He starts going off about how he is too. He digs Naruto, and a few others. That blew my mind, really.

So that shows you. Its a freaking hobby. A person with a freaking PHD in dentistry not shy about telling me he is into anime.

It is true that in most cases the typical stereotype of an anime otaku is a fat, sweaty, smelly, weird, socially inept, and overly obsessed person.

While some otakus are indeed like that, it is wrong to generalize that all fans of anime are the same way.

Some people are just casual fans and even if some fans are more passionate than usual, It doesn't necessarily mean they are fat, sweaty, smelly, socially, inept, etc...

Come to think of it i even have a fellow friend who watches and can relate to anime. The catch about him is that he is a commercial model and actor here in the Philippines.

    hate hate hate. :(

these days just about anything related to popular culture or non-conformist trends is subject to bashing by western society and the mainstream media.

You'll find it not just against anime fandom, but in every cultural/social niche such as hip-hop/rap music, punk, goth, emo (lol?) and many others.

In a way, you can't really blame them. Most the people who hate, just don't like what they see in "x" hobby or trend, whether it's the people that they attract or the content itself.

For anime, haters usually hate mainly because they think it's stupid, dumb, perverse, childish etc But those are derived from their own social and political values. So when they see that panty shot or weird Japanese only cultural reference, they take a disliking to it, since it is goes against their core values.

You could stay haters are shallow and close minded, but then again, everyone is like that when they encounter something that inherently goes against everything you believe in. Best instance is probably in religion...not that i'm hating or anything :P

Anime, as an art form, is going to attract opinions from all sides. What is sad is that some express their opinons in a more hostile way than most.
I've not met any Anime haters, but have to say that, even in my own household, there is a lack of understanding when it comes to my attraction to it. My daughter considers my figures as 'porngraphic' (even though I have no figures which are anything less than fully covered!), my wife considers my Anime pictures / figures photos screen saver as 'inappropriate'. Even my twenty-year-old son cannot watch my Anime DVDs, but is quite happy to watch films full of murder, gore and death for the sake of it - usually computer-generated, therefore an animation!

I find it sort of amusing and sad that people would get their panties in a bunch over anime and generalize it in such a way that makes it strictly perverted. I mean, sure, there's a crapload of titles like that, but anime spawns too many genres to be generalized down to that point. It also tends to tick me off (to put it nicely) when people find it necessary to harass others just because they like anime or anything else that isn't western, especially if it contradicts a stereotype that they put you in in the first place. For instance, I'm half black and people give me a hard time for watching anime and listening to Asian music because of it. They like calling me "blackinese." (And in my opinion, the only person who is allowed to use that word is Chris Tucker.) I mean, if you dislike anime, then by all means go on disliking it. Just don't poke fun at the people who do like anime just because it's different from what you like or what you're used to.

Take the first guy, he thinks that Chinese people live in Japan. Also most of them seem to hate it as the story lines are too complex for their small uneducated brains to follow.

I doubt that they ever thought something not making sense could be a plot or plot driver.

And it seems the last guy is paranoid that the world is out to get America and has again mistaken Japan for China.

Maybe these guys should go pass Geography, then English, then form a DECENT argument and them I will give a crap about their opinions.

I bet these are the people who just watch porn all day anyway.

Ok now that I have finished my geography, I'm going to Finish my argument.

What I noticed with these people who 'hate' anime is that they actually can't accept that a cartoon is actually popular.

Now what i think these people actually hate are the as dubbed by youtube 'narutards' Who in my opinion are one of two groups of anime watchers.

Narutards are the younger watchers who are still a bit naive and insecure and looking for a place where they can relate to an anime hero. usually ends up in them becoming obsessed.

Then there is the other group which start watching anime for maybe a year and then decide that they are interested in Japan and the language and therefore start learning and continue to watch anime as it provides good practice and is still entertaining.
I admit I hate people who are like 18+ who still think pokemon is a good show. I can sympathize with what the people in the vidos are saying when it is a similar situation.

My other argument would be this. Now before I start i have to say I have nothing against americans but this is aimed from what I often get from Americans while on xbox live. I am British by the way.

The Majority of people from the US, seem to be scared when something that isn't from the USA comes around that they can't understand and anime is one of those things. Its almost like they cant accept something that isn't from a similar culture.

Not that Britain is any better, and this simply comes down to culture, in western culture cartoons are for children and after that you move on to crappy soaps and dramas. where as in Eastern culture it is completely up to the watcher and so you get anime that spans all age groups. But due to American influence in the western world there is no exceptions form the cartoons are for kids sterotypes.

I can see this is a hot topic, and I think I may be a bit behind in my first post here, but I notice none of these haters had any solid arguments at all... I dunno, read some of the YouTube comments and you'll see there's plenty of mindless banter coming from the ProAnime side of the argument as well.

I think that instead of hating something that comes from a different culture, that you don't understand... do some research, learn more extensively about your topic, realize that there IS corny, cheesy, CRAPPY, anime out there, just as there is for western animation.

These people waste their hate on things that would be better spent on hating evil and injustices in the world. I didn't realize it was so tough to get along... even when it comes to animation.

I still feel that ultimately, we win this one, because after reading the first few comments here, the majority of readers here just feel indifference towards their hate, and that to me feels like victory. :P

Yeah....so I have to say that I more or less agree with the girl in the first video. The only real difference between us is that I do like anime, and it seems that she doesn't.

It really hurts me, nearly physically, when somebody acts like they know Japanese. This probably stems from the fact that I actually know the language (to a certain degree). However, I unfortunately have to admit that I am most likely guilty of the same crimes, maybe not to the same level as these people (due to the fact that I have never once cosplayed). I can merely hope that these people will grow up like me, and either start learning Japanese in a formal environment, or will learn that they should stop using horribly crippled Japanese, and stop acting like they actually know any.

That said...if you don't like something, and other people like it, just leave them alone...it is most likely not hurting you. And if you are going to complain about it...do yourself the favor of actually getting your facts right on the subject. When you get your facts wrong, the only thing that you can do to your movement is hurt it. Then again, people who post comments like jessetenshi can only hurt the case of anime fans.

For those who don't want to look it up, the most important line of it would have to be: "i really want to cut out your vocal cords and peel your face off."

Yeah. Thanks. I really want people like you representing my case to people who already think of us as insane idiots. You frankly make me want to stop being an anime fan.

The girl in the first video claims that she is joking, so im not entirely sure if she actually hates anime, or that she doesnt actually talk like that.

The "RoastedSand" guy, turns out, is actually a fan of anime, this video was apparently him messing around or something, his other youtube channel is "Bawitback". (i found this out if you look at his reply to comments in his "YouTube Sucks" video).

The "RoastedSand" series was a parody series poking fun at elements of otaku culture. I know this because I helped write one of the episodes. The "Anime Sucks" video is not real, it's just satire. If you go to RoastedSand's page, you can see a video called "YouTube Sucks" which is a behind-the-scenes outakes video which clearly demonstrates how hard he found it to pretend to hate things he loved. The guy the RoastedSand series is my close friend, and he loves anime.

There are Anime Haters here too. But it's not so overdone. Mainly they just say "Anime is just cartoon" or "that`s all bunkum". Or when you don't have luck then they just make fun of you or sometimes do stupid things. But we just need to ignore them, later they knock it off. Or, sometimes we can explain to them what's anime really like, then they maybe even watch anime. Depends on luck and on the person. Fortunately I never met a hardcore otaku hater before.

Its funny how everyone I've ever run into that has clearly disliked anime has generally been both unintelligent, biased in opinion of other hobbies and generally uncreative and uninteresting. I have friends who like a handful of anime, some particular series, styles, etc and I have friends who absolutely love and obsess over the stuff. I find it hard to understand how someone can outright hate anime, when its the most diverse form of animation there is with the largest range of different subject matter. But then there are people who hate all kinds of things for no reason whatsoever. Why? because they don't understand them and thus they fear them. Have these people ever taken the time to try to understand something they don't understand? no they haven't. They form an opinion without experiencing what whatever they're hating has to over and run with it. The same logic i see in message board/forums when the topic of say 'which games console is the best' pops up. People jump on and say 'I hate this one because of A, B, C' I ask them 'how much have they played the machine? and they respond with something along the lines of 'I wouldn't play that s***'.

Its really quite sad and to some degree this logic or way of thinking is probably the root of alot of death and pain and misery in the world. Racism or religious belief throughout history has lead to countless needless and pointless conflicts often resulting in the innocent being killed. If people just stepped back, looked in the mirror and took the time to think 'hey wait, I MIGHT be wrong, and this persons opinion or position could be just as valid as mine'. But no as we are humans its always 'kill first, justify the killing later'. Granted that's an extreme of this discussion there's no denying the thought pattern and thinking process behind it isn't related.

This is why whenever someone says 'hey I hate this' I tell them 'wait.. stop, don't hate it, dislike it, but don't hate'.
But before i tell them they can dislike it all they want I say 'why not take a couple minutes to find out all you can about what you dislike, in fact maybe try to experience what it has to offer for yourself' If they still don't like it that's fine because at least they've tried and at the very least they have stopped hating and started respecting that thing and the people who do like it a little more despite having little or no interest in it themself. My father for example, he has no real interest in anime but he doesn't outright dislike the stuff, every now and then he'll take a certain interest in a movie or series. I am so glad I was brought up in a family that taught me how to respect others and there interests despite my opinions of them.

I even went so far as totally annoying everybody in my morning workplace, because I have a cd that I made of ALL anime and Japanese music, I brought it in, told the manager I HAD to turn on some music to wake up, and I cranked it up almost as high as it could go volume-wise, and needless to say, after the second time through the entire cd everybody (except for the exception of one really cool dishwasher person:P), wanted me to turn it off!:P The next day, and from that point on everytime that dishwasher person has worked he has asked me if I had the cd with me.:P I love listening to anime music first thing early in the morning because it generally puts me in a very cheerful mood, and makes up the rest of how my day will usually go.:P

I really hate people with these kind of attitude. We anime fans never did anything to them, but as repayment, they bash us and insult our love of animes. Even if they dislike animes, they should have just keep it to themselves. Everyone has his/her own preferences or favourite things, and these people should learn to respect others' choices.

I used to have a few classmates who deliberately insulted and bad-talked animes while having conversations behind me (and they deliberately choose the seats at the table behind me too), just to get me "fired up". If only I have a Flamethrower with me at that time, i'll be sure to show them how i get "fired up".

And we were more open-minded enough to accept this beautiful art-form from a rich & wonderful culture different from ours. Most of these people are too "American-centric" that they cannot stand anything that revolves around their so called American culture. America being America is simply bigoted! I still can't believe there are people who hate it that much... I dont get whats to hate...:sigh: Well, tis their ignorance, not ours. It never even crossed my mind to google stuff like 'anime haters', and all the sites I've been on, like Gaia, Neopets etc, have all seemed to like it. (In Gaia's case it would be strange for them not too...)

the whole "each one to thair own" dosent apply to most of these ppl who get something out of pissing others off which i still dont understand, "anime haters" they cant just let it go off like warter on a ducks back they jump for the same thing over and over... "Bleach, Naruto and henti" there the most common that i hear of.

someone further up the list put that they are afraid to try new things this might be the case
but the internet/people will always have a hate things for no reson.

as these ppl on youtube they intitaled to thair oppinon i no but if the ones who havent seen it
who seem to be the ones who jump first jsut my pov

RoastedSand has obviously no idea what he's talking about. "Narootoe" has no storyline. Sure, because "Tom and Jerry" has such an apparent storyline.

Many people are either ignorant because they watch a small portion of anime and decide that it's all junk, or hold some kind of deep resentment for no reason because of anime's popularity.

Personally, I think that if you hate something, you don't have to rant about it on youtube, telling the whole world how bad it is, without even knowing anything about it.

To any currently active die-hard naruto fans out there, I am sorry.

But people who continually use naruto as an 'anime' standard just doesn't seem to know what anime really is. As with everyone out there who treats big titles as the standard.

Funny enough, these american 'anime standards' are never even mentioned or even well liked (as in, "omgthisisthebestshowever") Maybe there are some out there, so i won't take wild stabs in the dark. Also another thing, the north american cartoon/anime industry seems as if they want people to hate anime, with their advertisements (namely the toys), merchandise (might I add, this doesn't include figures/the works), dubbing (while not all are horrible, alot of them are quite bad). If being exposed to something you've never experienced or seen before in such a half-ass fashion, who would actually like it? I am not saying any show is bad, I am just saying that people should not base their judgments on something that's exposed to them in such a flawed and incomplete form.

Why the hate? Why not leave alone what you dislike and focus on being happy?

These people... they sure have sad lives, if they get their kicks off hating and posting... I think they like cartoons/anime but are guilty because of societies views of cartoons, and start bashing to feel good about themselves "no I'm not like them look how much I hate it".

I hate a lot of stuff. This world is full of horrible things. But there are better ways to use your time, why sour yourself over things that aren't of your liking and could easily avoid?

I just don't get it. I feel awful after getting angry, even when the fault comes from the other end; these guys need a psychiatrist.

I bet most of the anime haters out there don't even know what anime really is.They could also have been introduced to it it was in a bad way(Such as showing a hentai episode bad idea). I always show my friends spirited away or another Miyazaki film to start off. I then show them Noein: to your other self. Or Chrono Crusade and move on to Neon Genesis Evangelion if they so desire.

I like Anime even though Japan tried to invade my country once in WWII. Tezuka really would change the mind of how people percieve Anime, since he was a pacifist who valued the sacredness of life. Over here in Australia I haven't met one Anime hater, the only Anime haters I have met are on American server forums.

Australia also percieves what an Anime fan can be differently to Americans, a number of friends I knew from school never brought up their hobbies and equally enjoyed live action Hollywood movies. The hate towards Anime as inferior to American cartoons is like the hate Bollywood gets compared to Hollywood all over again, both Anime and Bollywood are valid artforms even though the plots are sometimes silly, there are some groundbreaking examples from both, like Miyazaki Anime films and Devdas from Bollywood.

    well, I live in germany
and anime isn't accepted here really. I'm always talking about the majority of people, of course, not ALL.
But adults and teens in germany generally think anime is childish and for kids. Which has lot to do with how anime is translated and edited here. They cut and manipulate them beyond belief. Like when people die, they are transferred to different dimensions, or so the german script says.
Hentai is unknown to most, but marked as really sick and it is believed that it always shows women beeing heavily abused.

Love the Haruhi merchandise there Danny :). I started watching anime when I was younger and have been hooked ever since. People who say anime sucks and is lame just need to keep their opinions to themselves. Just because you don't like something sombody else is interested in doesn't mean that person is automatically a loser or "gay"(I hate it when people say this and are really referring to something stupid >.<). I would also like to add that a lot of people that say that anime is lame generally speaking haven't watched one that they cared for or haven't watched one ever. Kind of hard though seeing how it is getting more common these days.

Damn i don't get why people have to always hate so much. Why can't they let us be happy with our hobby and leave us alone. Why do people feel the urge to take something away from someone if it makes them happy. I hate selfish people like that because if we attacked what they like they would be just as mad....if not make a bigger scene about it.

People need to have more respect....

And me being female would make that even better....since i don't look like their standard of and Otaku.

I've got friends who hate anime but thats not stopping me from watching or collecting figures of my favorite characters! I dont force them to watch it so it doesnt effect them in any way. Why hate on something that doesnt interfere with you?

There are these "busybodies" that get upset if you enjoy something rather than be miserable like them. Here in the USA, it is part of our puritan "heritage". Part of it is why we have some of the crappiest vacation policies. Companies like management will get in the way from you taking your earned vacation time. Back on Anime, I enjoyed it for several years and it is best enjoyed sitting with others for the laughter and joking around. But I know some people who dislike Anime and they are the same people that dislike other hobbies like four wheeling that is popular here in Colorado in the Rocky Mountains.

Personally I think that anime is so liked now because everyone is tired of watching the same fart jokes that are said in today's American media. I mean seriously, they can at least TRY to improve but it's the same running gag and Anime is more interesting then watching stupid characters in the media fall down over and over again.
Because of one thing: Anime actually has a PLOT.
So now all I say about this is that they can say their own opinions but I think it's just extreme to say they hate EVERYONE that likes anime, regardless of their own traits.

    THat's a really long response..

It's amazing all those who comment about Anime sucks, it would be nice if they could all speak a little faster when they comment. This guy called RoastedSand, where does this moron come up with a stupid name like that? It's hilarious how stupidly slow he talks. He sounds like a little whiner who can't seem to focus his thoughts correctly when trying to comment. Looking around constantly like a dork wondering what's going on with reality around him. He's just a dork with problems. And Brad there looks like some stupid druid giving his empty comment about Anime sucks, he's just jealous because Anime is popular and he is not. And the stupid little video he posted that says "Wash a Car," well I won't watch it because it's probably as stupid as he is. His, RoastedSand and the other commenting about Anime Obsessed Creatures, well she's probably as stupid as the other 2. Just my comment about stupid people.

Well, even otakus can't get away from the law of balance...
When someone likes, there must be someone who hates too.
It's just pretty unbelievable that there's more hates than likes...

After reading this is just made me think of the things I researched the other day about otaku assaults in japan and people who dispise others for what they enjoy, do as a hobby, or etc. I mean whatever a person does and likes is completely up to them, isn't it?

well, true to most ppl that say when theres someone that likes something, theres someone who hates it.
Even religion, someone follows, someone hates it. It all depends on how ppl see it =/
But seriously xD beauty is in the eye of the beholder?
And it's kind of bugging me but...somehow most americans think that china is the only asian country?... >_>
I had a singaporean friend who went over to the states for studies, and when asked where he was from, he answered singapore....they replied with "Oh is that somewhere in china?" Sort of thing.. and the roasted sand guy
mentioned china also....and that hulkamainiac92 guy too haha..

Anyway, to me, anime is just a media where ppl get a msg, or an idea across to other ppl, much like drawings, music, books. There exists genres, and art styles, different artists or animation companies have different styles and methods of putting their ideas into the anime, whether it be straight forward hot bloodedness like naruto, love stories and life like 5cm per second, slice of life like ARIA, or fantasies like studio ghibli's, they're all different and have different meanings. Its just a media. And you get to choose what u want, since the choices are so vast =O

Im proud to declare i like anime =P no shame, its like saying i like music, and food, and games, and being very irritating to my friends for being the most random friend for them xD

American made toons suck because they are made in America.

And its not about the indecency more prevalent in anime. The current crop of pro pornstars in the US have never seen an anime when they were teens, but they still got pretty screwed up thanks to home-grown American culture.

Living in both East Asia and the U.S.
I would say their is a very big difference.
America is the one the effin countries where people actually find stuff to hate on and nitpick like crazy!
Also, If people in America don't know or understand anything they just label and or hate on things for no reason.
IMO, if there is nothing positive to say then it should be kept to oneself.
I am glad that such is not the case in DC.com.
