The Complete History of the Internet in just 8 mins

When I was a teenager, I had no Internets.
- To communicate with people I had to call them or send snail mail.
- To get health care I had to buy the Sun newspaper or reach for the top shelf in the newsagent for playboy. There was also the option of going to the Japan Center in Piccadilly to get some 2D health material too.
- To find out the population of China, I had to go to a library or ask somebody in the hope that they knew.
- To watch anime I had to go to China town and look for Cantonese dubbed VHS tapes.
- To learn about a particular subject, I had to take classes or buy a book.

Be grateful of the Internets - use it for health, communication, fun and most importantly - to learn. Do try to spend as much time as you can learning stuff every day - not just when XX figure comes out or where you can download a copy of the latest Tony Taka oppai (although thats important too).

Knowledge is power and that power will open your eyes and opportunities for you. Be always thinking about your future self - look after your future self now by taking the opportunity to learn. Dont wait until tomorrow, do it now.

Learn about the history of the Internet in just 8 mins below.

Original text from Henry below.

The complete, comprehensive history of the Internet from 1957 to 2009, in just 8 minutes...minus the tentacles, lubricants, dolphins and "eyes" XDD

The first bit reminded me of this psychology experiment that I participated in. Was in a room filled with running hardware and a sensor strapped on my head (was uncomfortable and sweating buckets). I definitely feel sorry for anyone who had to work in the same room as the computer way back when.

Anyway, Internet 2 is coming too. And then becomes SkyNet :)
I bet systems are going to be renewed faster and faster and so will protocols. More powerful and complex. Adding new layers and encapsulation for old technologies will make that part a mess as well.

    Very quick and clean.

I consider myself lucky to have experience a time when the internet was not so widespread. I remember back when I was in middle school I hardly used the computer which ran on Windows NT. The screen savers were some of the best I recall. Simple yet funny. Playing MS-DOS games (>oo)> Then the whole boom with chat rooms. Wasn't so big with that but they were fun. Life before Google too. MSN search wasn't so bad.

I kind of miss old times.

Grateful for the internets? that's a tough one

I've come to realise that the internet can be highly dangerous too - To be able to do many things more efficiently in real life makes you forget how things were/are normally done. Take for instance, e-learning. Like the iKnow classes, the creation of such a resource is obviously great. But the danger is that there is no longer any sort of boundary looking out for you. No stress. No teachers to keep you in line, No one to challenge your thinking, etcetc. All the benefits from attaining knowledge through the net depends on an individuals own willpower and skill.

I know this only applies for perhaps a small count of people on the internet, but it's hard to ignore (for me) the problem that this creates.

    Maybe i'm just a pessimist ^^;

The internet is great for the dissemination and promoting the acquisition of new knowledge for all peoples with access, but I can't help but feel it also promotes a dehumanization of social networks with the moral hazard that comes with anonymity. A tradeoff occurs perhaps where people reveal more personal information and promote a community setting, but even then there are limitations what people can or are willing to do with each other.

An interesting time to be alive. Though I'm quite sure my life would be healthier without the thousands of doujinshi I've downloaded.

Funny thing is that I also never had internet until I was in my 20s. When it came to anime, information, and other things, I watched it on TV... read it... and more. I think before the internet, I did too much reading and not knowing.

But, also, I did manage to be in two episodes of Mtv's Singled Out. That, and Carmen Electra also touched me several times. (Danny might remember seeing her in Playboy.) Yet, after the internet, I did get to write two anime-based articles, with one getting recognition as far as Japan (as one person told me).

But I must say this... Friends don't let friends use AOL when it comes to dial-up. X3

I have been online since 1993. Think of a high speed 14.4k modem, Windows 3.11, and Commander Keen. I have spent most of my life on the internet and I am thankful for all of the people who made the exchange of ideas spread and social networking. This video reminded me of a Sciam article on the ARPANET. Some people knew it was going to be like this, but the majority did not even have a clue. I am only in my mid-twenties, but I have more experience than a lot of people.

The internet shall be free for the masses. This is to those engineers and programmers to make it possible. It is going to be a fun ride!
