The Geass girls (and boys) are back taking the prime time 5PM slot on TBS - the start of the second season Code Geass R2 aired last Sunday.

Those who have seen the first season and still have yet to watch EP1 may find these screencaps as spoilers in which case you may want to have a look at idols instead.

Description below straight from Anime News Network. It's been one year since the failure of the Black Rebellion and the supposed death of Zero. Britannia has assigned Area 11 a "correctional education" status, where Elevens are made an example of by brute force, to try to prevent any future uprisings and suppress rebellious thoughts.
Unsuspecting high school student Lelouch, oblivious to his rebellious past as Zero, stumbles upon a scheme on his life and the life of a mysterious woman known as C.C., who reveals to him his forgotten purpose and his "true" self.
Destroying his assailants and declaring himself Zero once again, Lelouch sets out to finish what he started.

While the quality of many anime titles deteriorate over time, one of the things that I really appreciate about Code Geass is the quality of the production - the story, BGM and animation have been great so far and R2 EP1 looks like more of the same goodness. The high quality could be because of the extra sponsorship from Pizza Hut and internet provider Biglobe - the ad placements in the anime are incredibly unnatural - maybe they do that on purpose so that you notice them.

A few comrades who work in the anime business tell me that its difficult to keep the production quality high throughout an entire series due to high production costs. This is the reason why many shows start off with great quality (to pull in the punters) and then slowly become crap over time but as long as the story is good then the punters (theoretically) stay on. A good example was Speed Grapher - enjoyed the whole series but the quality of animation became seriously dodgy at times.
How important is the quality of animation for you? Do you drop shows if the quality drops?

And in case you was wondering - animation companies make barely nothing by just airing the show on TV - the money comes from DVD sales, merchandise and licensing.

Anyway, back to Geass. If you like Mecha, nice girlies, nice boys and a story on a grand scale then Geass is right up your alley - well worth investing some time to check it out.

By the way you asked if I would drop a series if the production quality drops in the first place.
I'd say no as for me the plot and characters are the ones that matter the most.
I go for a mix of new anime shows and what I call the "legendary anime series", not only to wisely invest time when new episodes of ongoing series are not yet aired, but also to catch up on anime knowledge I have missed for long years (relatively between the end of DBZ and the discovery of streaming with Bleach).
For example, recently I have been watching Clannad, Bamboo Blade, True Tears but also Neon Genesis Evangelion and currently Chobits.
This said, I never charge blindly as I tend to wait for reviews, a bit like for videogames. ^^

Haven't watched the 1st episode on R2 yet, but will soon. This is probably one of the best anime airing at the moment, finally some sweet mecha action.

And the quality on anime, I don't really care as long as the story is great. Alot of old anime got bad animation and dull design but is still good.

To me the animation quality of a show is important, but this doesn't mean that great animation is enough to get me hooked and not-so-good animation quality doesn't automatically make an anime unwatchable.

For example, I liked Minami-ke, Welcome to the NHK and Mushishi very much even though the visual quality wasn't always top-notch.

I loved the first season of Code Geass so I will watch R2 as well. At times it was a little bit of a train-wreck plot-wise but for me this is actually one of it's charms.

Never seen Geass before, but these clips make it look a bit more intresting than i previously thought. Still not that keen on the character and mecha designs though. The chins on those 2 yaoi looking blokes could cut through steel!

Finally had a chance to sit down and watch the ep last night, although I've had the ep since it was shown on sunday.

I intend to write up my thoughts later tonight but overall, I was underwhelmed. My biggest gripe is that it didn't connect smoothly with the end of the first season. We were left with a lot of questions and all we got in the first ep was basically a rehash of the first season opening and even more questions!!!

Having said that, it did beat out the broadcast version of Ep1 of macross frontier. But only just.
My anticipation for frontier still greatly outstrips my desire for more geass

Yap, watched it and it's good. Well this ep 1 has the same atmoshphere with ep 1 in season 1 too i guess... Like got chess duel, and in the end lulu was cornered and met with C.C then gains the power. Well it was probably intended to be like that I guess... Nevertheless I'm excited for the next episode~~~ :D

Animation quality is pretty important to me. There are very few cases where I'll stick with a show with shitty production values these days. The last one I watched was Rosario + Vampire, and that's only because the characters usually managed to stay on model, but each cut of animation done on fours or something.

Seems like the writers dug themselves into a hole and didn't know how to get out at the end of season 1. Hence the story picks up one year later and Lelouch has fake memories.

Still haven't checkes Geass out yet. Was downing a lot of shows at the time and this one slipped though; but since everyone is going crazy 'bout it I might give it a whirl.

About animation quality needs; it's kinda inversely related to the story I guess. If the story is really good and I like watching, I might forgive some loss of quality, but if the story is not so interesting the animation had better be damn good. The only show that totally failed for me on both is Soul Hunter; god that was crap...

If a series animation quality drops it all depends on how good the story is. With Haibane Renmei I just wanted to see the whole series, regardless of the 2nd half of the series being worse quality animation.

its a nice epi, but quite a bit of ideas/use of scenes are somewhat taken from season 1 and there's quite a lot of mysteries unsolve. So i found a lot of stuff odd the way that it happen in epi 1~
    but good epi indeed
maybe they'll reveal it @ another epi

too bad the OP and ED songs are not good for me... besides, the animation quality went down.

I just finished watching epi1 and I just LOVED it! I got the same vibe and feeling I got when I watched the first epi of season 1. Animation quality was top notch (i think it was HD quality). OP and ED was great especially since orange range is doing them. First character I saw was CC and I just became excited! ^^ Then about 1/3 into the show Kallen showed up in a bunny suit..things just couldn't get any better than that. ^^ And I just knew that shot of kallen in her mecha just had to be posted. hahah.

I've never been this excited about a show ever and that is saying a lot about this anime. One thing I felt kinda weird and enjoyed at the same time was when Lelouch remembered being Zero...he just sent kinda a Light Yagami vibe there for some reason. Loved that! ^^

I wonder about this. I used to think this is the case but anime always seem to have sponsors. And for Code Geass a Bandai/Sunrise production, they have tonnes of funding to work with. And what more with Pizza Hut sponsorship and product placements and advertisment time....i'm sure Code Geass is definately making some money from the broadcast itself.

Did anyone take notice of the little warning label in the beginning of the show which told people NOT to dl it or upload it from Internet mediums? My question is, what is the current status of legality of RAWs? I mean, Danny just said that Anime companies makes money from DVD sales, not through commercials... So yea... (that warning label made me jump a little, thinking that I was suddenly doing something wrong... Wait, I do a lot of things wrong.... shhh...)

Overall, however, I was rather disappointed... Maybe because I saw Code Geass when it finished, and I got to see it through, rather than wait a week and watch it... But yea, more questions that arose in this one episode, rather than answering some of the questions left in the first season, which annoyed me... As well, more reason to hate suzaku... That's a plus

I like the first ep, even though it made me confuse and force me to gather my memories of last season exact plot (guess a bit like Lelouch ^^)

I am a Geass fan; 'nuff said. The good thing for Code Geass is that while the mecha might be good looking, the storyline never loses focus of the main point; Lelouch Lamperouge's various exploits in his attempt to make the world a better place for his sister. When CG: LOTR first aired, it was often compared to SEED/SEED Destiny. Not to say that Gundam SEED was bad, of course, but sometimes you get the feeling that they're doing the anime simply to have the Gundams in cool battle poses. If you watch CG: LOTR R2, it shouldn't be for the mecha action, even if the occasional battles are animated and spaced throughout the story nicely(that task is for TTGL, SRW OG: DW and other related stuff) but for its epic storyline.

I don't drop titles just because the quality of the animating is teh suxxor(if not I would have thrashed Bandai HQ for producing something like Giniro no Olynssis). My heart dosen't condone having incomplete stories left hanging.

Definitely a Code Geass fan. I completely forgot a second season was on route. Thanks for dropping the info so quick.

As to the question, I definitely drop anime when the quality drops. I couldn't stand to watch Naruto Shippuden -- the quality was so poor in comparison to the greatness that was found in earlier parts of the series.

It almost seems like they intentionally created a semi parallel universe setting (brainwashed) in order to make it accessible to new viewers.
The picture quality looks better than the previous season, maybe a change from SD to HD production for the new time slot?

Interested in both, I'll watch a show with great animation simply to enjoy the visuals, even if it has a crappy story. Same goes for enjoying a great story with miserable animation.
Geass still seems to be well positioned in both departments.

Story is always important, but I watch anime for the art quality as well. For me it would depend on the show. Sometimes I'm willing to put up with poor quality.

Comes as no surprise about companies making next to nothing on the broadcast. Money is always in the licensing of product and such. It is interesting to see companies such as Pizza Hut involved. haven't seen much of this since Code Geass started. I do wonder if it will start a new trend in anime...

I really do like the direction that was taken for the new season. Will be watching it until the last episode!

    I FEEL ASLEEP

I got into this anime probably more than any other anime apart from Bleach and DBZ (the latter being when I was about 15). Something that occurs to me is that the fact they have quite a lot of episodes facilitates becoming attached to the characters and settings - even if they were awful you'd get a Stockholm Syndrome attachment.

The plot was at once fascinating and ridiculous but what I loved about it is that it didn't give a crap - it wasn't trying to be serious so much as it was trying to be grand and operatic. It jumped the shark about a million times but that only makes me like it even more. I also shed manly tears at the finale. It was one of those rare series that made be feel like it was the end of a chapter in my life when I finished watching the final episode. That sounds immensely sad and geeky but it just grabs you by the balls and doesn't let go until the end, managing to create top notch action scenes and likeable, surprisingly complex characters (not a compliment I can imagine many people paying to Geass but then it's too easy to just overlook some of its subtler good points).
