Lost and Found in Japan

I recall the time when I left my brand new mobile phone on the train on the way home just after buying it. Was reading the manual and was so excited that I totally forgot about the box which I left on the baggage shelf.
Realized that I forgot the phone as I was approaching the ticket barriers at my home station. Went to the station guy to let him know of my dilemma.
He asked which train and I told him it was the one that just left the platform. He looked at his train schedule and said "OK, it was the 20:22 from Shinuku to Saginomiya. Do you remember which carriage and at which end of the carriage?"
After letting him know it was the first carriage at the 3rd door, he called somebody at the next next station and instructed somebody to look for my poor phone on that train at the carriage location that I described.
He hung up the phone and got a call a few mins later - the station guys at the next next station had intercepted my phone. I went to that station immediately and upon arrival they asked me to describe the bag and the contents to make sure I was the owner. Luckily I didn't have any dolphin care products inside or describing the contents would have been interesting ^^;
Upon regaining contact with my new phone, I was having a few mins of disbelief about me getting my phone back. I had just moved to Japan at the time after living in the UK all my life and I know that if the same thing happened in back there, it would have been sayonara to new phone.
The only "major" loss that I remember was my bus pass when I was about 16. It had about 20 pounds in it and I was devastated ^^;
As for my friends, I remember one who left her GameBoy and a bag of games on the train - it was sayonara to her game device forever.
Have you lost anything in your region and were you able to recover it? Are people good about handing things in?
