Latest Final Fantasy XIII trailer. Looks pretty awesome. Am more of a shooting or 2D platform game person myself. What genre of games do you prefer?

Original text from Mirage below.
Recently, Final Fantasy XII's countdown revealed a new trailer. This time, they show you more of the story around it as well as the gameplay.

I myself haven't played as much FF games enough that i can call myself a fan of the series (never owned a Sony console of any kind), but I am looking forward to pick up this title sometime after the release as it's one of the most anticipated games so far. I thought the battle system looks very neat compared to the ol turn based system.

What do you guys think? Thumbs up or down?

i havent played much FF either, apart from 7 and 10, and a couple of the orginals. i think i prefer a more dynamic playing system like the new versions, where you get to run around freely and attack from different angles, instead of the old one position run back and forth attack style. hope it turns out good

    Thumbs up.

I wasn't a fan of Final Fantasy when I first played it on SNES, but I got back into it after FF VIII. Even went back and played through all the FF I could get my hands on. Oddly enough I was a fan of Squaresoft (now Square-Enix) because of Secret of Mana; which was my first RPG and what introduced me to Square.

    After seeing this trailer and the trailer for Versus, I feel both games will certainly keep me entertained for many hours ^^;

My favorite JRPG is Tales of Vesperia (I only have the demo), and my favorite American one is Oblivion, though you basically cap out at level 20 (you can go to 99, but you basically can complete everything at 20)

Looks awesome. The battle engine in particular looks like the best one the series has seen since the SNES days. Hopefully the battle engine actually plays as good as it looks though.

I only played FF8 because i never owned a Sony machine (i borrowed a friend's PS for the 8) and wasn't interested in the genre when the franchise was on Nintendo machines.
I did the 8th because i liked the kind of world and atmosphere it had
For the moment, the 13th also gives me this feeling

I only played FFVIII way back on the PC. I was never too inversed in the art of playing role playing games that are turn based so I naturally sucked at it. Nonetheless, I did admire the FF games for many elements such as art, characters, unique universes and many other things. Aside from that though... I never did own a Playstation 1 or 2 so naturally, I couldn't play any of the other games despite wanting to... I actually like what I'm seeing for FFXIII at the moment though. As for whether I will play this or not... depends mainly on financial situation and time.

I've played Final Fantasy since the NES days.
The last one that I truly loved was Final Fantasy 6 on the SNES. 9 out of 10.

While everyone seems to liked FF7 a lot, I'd give it about a 7.75 out of 10.
Then the tone/style shifted dramatically with FF8 and what was the beginning
of the decline(IMO). FF9 was a slight redemption, but FF10 was beyond hope
to me. I avoided FF11 and did not even finish FF12. I don't hold out much
    hope for me liking FF13.

But as much as I hate the current style of Final Fantasy, it is only one of two
game series that I will give up hard earned cash for. The other being anything
anything with Satoshi Urushihara's artwork. ^_______^

So like a moth to the flame, I will still buy and play FF13 regardless of
how much crap I think is in the game. :(

I'm a big big fan of FF. Played each and every FF game from SNES, GBA, PSX, the rest emulated (even the PC chocobo world :P). I've just (well, 1 year now) bought PS2 and player FFX, FFX2, FFXII, but PS3 is out of my reach.
I suffered pains being unable to pay PS2 FF games, until I finally got one. Now it'll be the same... wait some years to afford a PS3...

Until then, I'll cry when watching the videos...

It's very technically accomplished of course, but I prefer Final Fantasy games to take place in more traditional fantasy worlds. I miss the black mages, dragons, countryside and giant airships. FF9 was one of my favourite FFs because of the world in which it was set. Now FF is full of emo androgynous teenagers who all look identical to each other shooting people in sci-fi shiny worlds. It's just not that appealing anymore.

Role playing & simulation games here. For some unknown reason to me 1st person shooters make me very dizzy and sick. I loved FF10 but am going away from game machines now since I have more than I have finished and no TV to play them on (its being used for what I watch).

Been a fan of FF since FF7 on the PS1 but I never loved it like the rest until FF8, which had character design, style and battle system gameplay more to my liking. Although I didn't like Squall as a lead character much as I found him too cold and lacks charm at times.

Finished FF7, FF8 and FFX but only got started with FF12 and lost interest / had no time.

My favourite genre would have to be fighting and 2D platforms. I like old school side scrolling beat'em ups like Final Fight, Streets of Rage, etc. as well as 2D fighting games like Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown, Marvel vs Capcom and KOF (how good does KOFXII look?!?). I love old school 2D platforms like Strider (tough) and Super Ghouls & Ghost (even tougher). Only 2D platform game I ever fully finished was Castle of Illusion on the Megadrive! :P

If you have the opportunity to play FF6 (it's a PS1 title) do it. Loads of fun. Great storyline and I rate it almost as good as FF7 except for the graphics which are classic style nonetheless.

Looking good. Finally there is more footage of the combat system, though it seems like it has been toned down. The first trailers released showed the battles to be on a larger scale and it seems more fluid and such...this battle system seems kind of linear and restricting, still fluid just many of the original elements have been removed; guess it's to be expected. Maybe it's just me and expecting something really awesome from a Final Fantasy on next gen. consoles. Either way, I am still looking forward to this game and its spin-offs. Hopefully the story will be great as well.

    I'm a bit of a mixture myself.

I like FPS for the most obvious of reasons! I like the feeling of being able to kill someone from a distance. It makes you feel like your omnipotent! O_o

I like strategy games because it makes you feel like God. Your units will always be loyal to you and will never question your orders, even if you put them in a suicidal situation. PLUS some strategy games have superweapons, a power that will surely make anyone power hungry!

I like RPG games because these enable me to be in someone's shoes. It makes me be in a situation I can never be in in real life. Also, it's like reading a novel at the same time. I also like the cutscenes and special powers in RPG games.

I also like sims, especially aircraft simulations. It's sorta fulfilling my dream in becoming a pilot.

This trailer almost made me cry due to excess AWESOME + WIN.

Final Fantasy XIII will be great, but we're going to have to wait a whole lot longer because of Xbox compatibility... Maybe with this game we'll finally find out which console really is better since this game for once is being made for PS and converted to 360 instead of the usual other way around.

Played every single FF in the main (numeral) series (except for XI) and a few non-numerals and it's one of my favourite franchises.

I enjoy playing RPG's, JRPG's, Racing games (dori-dori!! xD), Mecha-related games and right now i'm glued on Skate 2.

Just finished watching it at Gametrailers and I have to say I'm impressed. When they released the 06' trailer for FF13 everyone was arguing whether the combat in it was truly gameplay footage or some fabricated CGI. But now it looks like it was gameplay all along. I agree with Metal Gear Solid since Hideo Kojima sticks with what he wants for his franchise. Then again, I wish he'd have considered redoing the original Metal Gear games for those who want the complete Snake experience.

But with Final Fantasy, I can only say that for I-VII, and even X. VIII and IX were a bit weak and XII could have been so much more. Same with X-2. And XI was online only. Besides... I feel that Dragon Quest is a better franchise. And if I still was a fan of the DS and still had full trust in Square Enix, I'd be playing IV while waiting for V, VI, and IX to come out.

In all cases... I am hoping to hear that Namco Bandai will put out a PS3 version of Tales of Vesperia out later this year. That way I'd have a third RPG series that will make me not think about how this game may end up having a 2010 release date in the U.S. >_<

What's going on?! I'm not an FF player (never owned any consoles) and this game doesn't look newbie-friendly or one that is easy to pick up. I think Chrono Trigger is much better.

My favorite RPG spot is shared by Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger!! After that Final Fantasy IV, X, Suikoden I+II, Chrono Cross, Kotor I+II, Mass Effect. All great titles.

I'll be getting this one, but my hopes aren't high. FF VII and VII were so-so to me, and XII lost my attention after a few hours. The change in battling and the removal of some of the classic content was enough to make me cry almost. But with Sakaguchi, Amano, and Uematsu having almost nothing to do with last titles was the final straw. No Uematsu means no Final Fantasy to me. Sadly their titles from Mistwalker were disappointing as well. Lost Odyysey was fun, but its' characters didn't pull me in, Blue Dragon was not my kinda game. The character design bugged me. I wish Sakaguchi had Uematsu owned the rights to their work and could take it away from the greedy corporate monster that Square-enix has become!!

Yeah I agree FFVI is great. Was Chrono Trigger also on the PS1 or PS2?

I will definitely get this game, but on the 360. I wouldn't indulge in fanboyism and invest in a ps3! never! oh and a new tv while i am at it ^^

The only genres I don't play are dancing and sports. But, probably my favorite genres...? Turn-based Strategy games, RPGs, and action games. Oh, and 2-D shooting! Thunderforce will always have a special place in my heart.

The trailer looks quite good... but personally have no patience to play RPGs... the last one I finished was Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast, many many moons ago... ^^

Agreed. :3 And if it comes to the PSN, I might get it. Besides, I was also tempted to get Ehrgeiz from PSN Japan. It's a fighting game with Final Fantasy VII characters you can unlock. And it also has an RPG element.

That... and the arcade version included Red XIII's father as a playable character (if I do recall).

I prefer RPGs but not that crappy J-RPG stuff. I'm talkin about the real shit, things like Morrowind, Gothic 1 and 2 (and it's inofficial successor Risen), Mass Effect, Star Wars KOTOR, Fallout (3) and of course Diablo.

Allow me to quote a certain someone to explain why I dislike J-RPGs so much:
"A major that turns me off JRPGs and a lot of games in general is when I don't feel that I as a player am contributing anything to the story. All I ever seem to do is wheel the character just from one wingy, boring dialogue to the next. Events driven by *their* actions, not mine. All I am is a little angry id who takes over for the combats, spending the rest of the time jumping up and down in the back of the main character's mind, yanking on nerve endings, trying to make him act like a pillock.

I'll show you what I mean. At one point in the second part of the game I was given the clue "30 + 74". Assuming your brain is located inside your skull and not your rectum, you can probably hazard that it adds up to 104, which was the pretentious name of a pretentious clothes shop near my starting location, but I couldn't actually go there because the street was closed off. It only opened after I went to another nearby location and sat through another dialogue-heavy cutscene in which I was bold-facedly told the answer to the puzzle.

This is *not* interactive storytelling, this is just reading. I know Japan has a very different culture to the west, but I will never understand why they like the visual-novel-style of games so much. The porno ones I can sort-of understand, at least there's the promise of titties to keep you motivated, but most of them play like choose-your-own-adventure books with half the pages ripped out, which kinda goes against the whole idea of gaming.

What I'm saying is that I like games where the story and gameplay go hand in hand, while in most JRPGs the story and gameplay are kept either side of a wrought-iron fence made of tigers."

Yeap. The programming tool that they used to develop the game is on the PC so its easy fort them to create a PC version. Something like DMC4.
