if you have a few mins break then you may want to spend some time watching the following video which contains some interesting facts about population and technology in general. There is also a mention of Japan Telecom (NTT) in there too which I cover in todays Japan Optic Fiber Internet article.
Looks like in just a few decades, mankind will end (the matrix) ^^;

Original text from tintin-san below.

My lecturer for Computing and Society showed this video in class the other day.
It's about the exponential growth of technology and how it will affect us in the future.

I thought it was highly insightful, though-provoking and entertaining so sharing it here.
Do watch it ^^;

Shift Happens. Did You Know? Version 3.0

My favourite:
For students starting a 4 year technical degree, this means that...
half of what they learn in their first year of study will be outdated by their third year of study.
--> I didn't do well for my first semester ^^;

Otherwise, all the other facts were equally stunning and awe-inspiring.

Photo grabbed from http://www.change-ability.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

    Very interesting. I learned about exponential growth before.

    Some futurists believe this will lead to a technological singularity of sort, artificial intelligence being self aware, self sufficient, and exceeding human intelligence.

    Who knows?

    Anyways, the US prides itself in being number one. Currently we are #3 in population less than a third compared to India and China who are over 1 billion! Come on people! Start making babies! (>OO)> USA! USA!

    Many interesting stats. Though most of it isn't very mind-blowing, considering the advancements in technology and how closely tied the world is today.

    I think one important idea to take from this is that we must educate people more in the history of science and technology, otherwise I fear we will reach a point of over-dependency on technology that no one understands. And that is a dangerous spot to be in. Otherwise we'll see cults growing up around supercomputers, machines planning out people's fates, and other terrible ideas that may sound ludicrous to us, but could actually happen.

    Great video. I knew a lot of it, but it was still interesting to have them compiled and put together like that.

    Technology does move fast, but that doesn't mean that everything runs on the latest and greatest. How many computers in the US still run Windows XP, Windows 2000 or even Windows 98? How many people have television sets over 10 years old in their homes? How many of you have a console they no longer make games for (and still play it)?

    My point is that new technology is a n+1 to existing technology, not a complete replacement (at least not right away). People only adapt to the new stuff if it is clearly superior to what they have, is cheaper and easily adopted. Very few products fit those criteria. And there are more evolutionary dead ends than breakthroughs.

      Psh, 10 year old TVs? Windows 2000? That's nothing, trust me.

      The ISA (instruction set architecture) most of us are running, Intel's x86; first used in 1978. Many large banks use software written in the 60's because it's stable and they're afraid an upgrade may cause a crash.

        ISA improvements contributed greatly to initial growth in computing power. Most Intel processors have a microcode unit that adapts x86 to maintain backwards compatibility. We've pretty much hit a wall in terms of ISA improvement. Computer architecture improvement is reaching a plateau as well. Future improvements are going to rely a lot more on fabrication technologies.

    I kind of wonder if these futurists have any idea about what goes on in the research for the computing industry. There are physical limitations to what we can come up with as far as computing goes. While I'm not saying progress is going to halt, some of the stuff there was just ridiculous.

      CCNA...Reminds me of high school. Most of the things you learned are still going to be applicable for a while. For example, the network you are probably going to be administering is using IPv4. IPv6 is STILL seeing a slow deployment. Also, you're going to see slow deployment of new features in Cisco's IOS. So, yeah, the stuff you learned might be outdated, but it's still going to be the status quo for a while.

    Much of the increased power of computing shown here was first stated by Intel co-founder Gorden Moore way back in 1965. Moore's Law states that number of transistors placed on a single integrated circuit doubles roughly every six months. This sort of exponential growth is sort of scary, mostly because we aren't used to thinking in such terms. The classic example is the frog pond problem: If the number of frogs in a pond doubles every day, and the pond becomes overpopulated after thirty days, when was the pond only half full of frogs? The answer is surprising if you haven't carefully thought it out: Twenty-nine days. The point is that with this sort of growth, change can happen blindingly fast. Change itself is not bad, but I sometimes wonder about the growing feelings of personal isolation when confronted by this tsunami of information.

        I think the current trend is actually following the curve quite closely. Unfortunately, the increased transistor count also means more power consumption. Our energy consumption is going to put an end to Moore's Law.

        Oops! You are right! Thanks for catching the mistake -- it is closer to two years. I note there is an interesting side-light to all this -- sort of off the original topic. Moore's Law does have a limit based on the nature of current semiconductor materials. When Jan Schon (I think at Bell Labs?) announced he had discovered that a certain type of organic dye could be used in place of silicon (And thus opening the way for huge advances) it created quite a stir. A shame he faked all his data. I wonder what such an invention would be worth these days?

        As for Moore's Law, as near as I can figure out from a quick Google search, it still seems to be in agreement with reality.

        faster faster faster...

    The 31 billion Google searches interests me a lot there... especially comparing to tenrou's post: http://www.dannychoo.com/detail/mac/eng/image/12918/Google+and+the+Environment.html

    Which means there are about 31 million(or more) kilograms of CO2 produced in the year 2008 just from Google searches. Very interesting...

    yeah that was very informative, entertaining and definitely mind boggling. I just totally appreciate the internet and my "connectivity" to a lot of things. As much as I love my iphone I love going to the gym too. I dont know why people freak out when they cant contact you RIGHT NOW, over the most trivial things. It also drives me up the wall when i AM in the gym and people are on their phone talking and taking up equipment. It feels like as devices and technology start catching up with our lives, its like were slowly building a "bubble" around ourselves and it might become more difficult to contact each other directly.
    anyone else bothered by someone when your talking to them face to face and theyre on the phone texting? that drives me UP THE WALL!
    sorry about the soapbox. anyone else agree with me on my whole "bubble" theory?

    There might be some fallacies in this video. The Internet, then ARPAnet, was around since like the 1950's. Market audience was defense and academia. It only became popular around the 90's, where the market audience finally shifted to everyday people. That's 40 years! I'm pretty sure it's not 4 years. Plus, a lot of old technology is still in use today. For instance, vacuum tubes are still used in amplifiers! BJTs are also still used, given it has declined. Change doesn't happen as fast as this video may make it seem.

    Interesting and it does make sense. Back when I was still learning coding during high school, it was still used until now it's outdated and I think not many people are still into old coding anymore. This doesn't apply to me as well but my dad used to study computer science during his university time and he told me that what he learned back is already outdated and not used in today's world technology anymore.

    Technology are growing faster than we have realized from the time that the thing is release from market or announced on public. It's quite scary but still the true fact.

      Fear not - don't let the video mislead you. It's important to understand that despite the fact that information is indeed increasing, it simply means the information you study will not cover as much new information is being generated. That is: you will never catch up and you will never know everything.

      HOWEVER: this is not the same as what you know being useless. Far from it. The challenge is applying the knowledge you have learned.

      My favourite example (and I tell this too all students): I complained to my faculty when was in university that the COBOL programming course was not being offered. They kept delaying it - sometimes even telling me, "it's an old language, why do you want to learn it? We are offering Java next semester!"

      Well guess what is the language still in use in many legacy systems? If you guessed COBOL, then you win... nothing. I code COBOL for a living and I make pretty good money. I have a long-term contract with the federal government (10 years and counting). So knowing COBOL maybe out-of-date knowledge, but it is never "useless" knowledge.

    I wonder why so many are surprised by the pace of technology these days. I do not take higher education to learn of specific pieces of technology, I'm taking it to get an overview and a foundation to use in the years to come. You should not learn a specific implementation just to learn it, but instead you should "learn to learn", so that you can use what you know and apply it to other problems and situations. Use your mind in a "creative" way.

    Most of the stuff I've been taught up till now mostly dates 10+ years back. It is the foundation I can use to understand the current technology and the current development better.

    With regards to the video, when you think about it for a second, most of it sound quite plausible. It only seems amazing if you've never though along those lines before. For instance the expression "One in a million". Wouldn't be surprised if this dates back to when there weren't so many people around. We need to change that to "One in seven billion" or what seems to be the correct population on earth at the moment.

    Wow amazing facts, especially the 'illegally downloaded music' part. 680,000 musics in 5 mins? Simply wow.

    One of the best 'fact' info video I've seen so far. Hope NTT's technology gets available to everyone soon ^^; Imagine all the high quality videos I could stream with that XD

    I thought a cool title instead of shift happens is "shit happens". After all, with such shocking revelations, shit hits the people.

    Man, this is kind of scary actually, and kind of intimidating...It looks like we'll be living our sci-fi movies around 2030-2050. We already brought a lot of Star Trek's technology to life.

    Nice video, but keep in mind around 90% of information available today on Internet is trash, worthless, racism, ignorance, violence, pornography, etc.
