Broadband in Japan

500 kbps in my house in Paraiso... I feel cheated on as anybody that has "Telmex" connection does. They sell you 1mbps and they give you 500 D= wooot!?!!??!

I had a chance to use Hikari fibre when I was lodging at my friend's place in Japan. Awesome stuff. Downloads came in within a few minutes!

More than anything, I am pleased by the good upload speed. I get 6 Mbps here at home, but only half a megabit upload.

While I ramp up my personal business, I'm employed by a small regional ISP here in the US, and we serve our couple thousand customers (mostly DSL, moving to fiber) with two DS3s which we load balance across. Since they're not bonded, a single connection can't make use of both at once, but It's still nice to have 45 Mbps up and down while at the office. :) We have bandwidth to spare at the moment (since most people don't use their fast connections that heavily), but it's clear that an upgrade will be needed soon. We're looking into our options, and I can't wait to stress test it!

It's nothing compared to a friend of mine in Sweden, though. She pays about what I do for internet service at home, but she her service plan is for 100 Mbps service, and she gets every bit of it. I know some locations in Tokyo can get similar service, but I fully expect that I'll have ordinary DSL speeds when I'm in Japan.

I was stuck on dial-up for years. I live in a pretty rural area and a little out of town so DSL isn't even an option and the local cable company hasn't gotten off their lazy butts and gotten cable internet working yet. So I was very glad when Clearwire came to town a couple of years back. While what I got now beats the heck out of dial-up it's still no DSL, no matter what Clearwire says. My major problem with it is that Clearwire does traffic shaping to while Bittorent still works it can still take hours to download an anime episode even on a well seeded torrent. I'd be a happy camper if I could get speed even half of what Danny is pulling.

About 4-5Mbps here, which still pales in comparison to what Danny is getting. Talking about dail-up brings up memories of the old days when the Internet was nothing more than a young fledgling.

Speed is not that important. Here the speeds are 16Mbit download, 1Mbit upload but you only get maybe 30GB a month for the price that you're paying. So you can use up your monthly limit in 1 day if you tried. How much can you download or is it unlimited?

well for $50 nz dollars i get sub advertised speed about 1400kb/s down and 86kb/s up, although its suppose to be full speed down (8mb/s) and 128kb/s up.

i dont know who decided that all any one ever need is just 128kb/s upload.

at least my plan has an unlimited cap on it but it no longer available so you cant sign up for it which leave us still on it.

all other plans have data caps on them starting at 10gb a month. you can add extra data but it costs.

Mexico have some crappy connections, our ISP are a wholebunch of thieves that only care to get money, you have to pay like 2 months more for cancelling the service for example. I download at 369 kbps and upload at 144kbps and I am paying for a supossedly 1mb connection, the service stalls a lot and I get disconnected like twice a day, usually overnight, while Im downloading things, but well....we have to deal with it /sigh

PS Also you upload at 10mbps, not 100mbps

I have 6Mbps down and 512kbps up for about 65$ But when provider have a bad day it can be around 50-300kbps :/ Until a year ago there was limts for downloading and uploading, for 6mb it was 50GB. Because that I haved 640kbps for that same price as now.

When you mentioned dial-up I remembered that annoing sound when connecting to internet... Something horrible, and download speed 3-4KBps when now I have 700KBps :P

at an average, the speed that we get is around 128 kpbs-512 kbps and if we are lucky, we can get as much as 1 mbps ^^

so, broadband providers here are pretty decent.

here, we have WiFi ISP broadband services where you can get to the internets at broadband speeds without any physical phone line. it uses mobile phone cell sites to connect to the internet.

I can understand people getting a couple Mbps in parts of Asia (I know that the market of ISP is quite competitive, and you can get incredibly good connections at a fraction of the cost we pay in North America), but to what percent have I seen so far in North America. The average cable company here in Ontario is 512+ kbps, and maybe nearing 1 mbps at the MOST. And we're paying $50 for that :/

That's the one thing I like about Japan for example. It's a technologists dream city. So ahead of the game, and much more affordable than things we have goin' here.

Danny, you might need to correct your post again. I'm pretty sure your screenshot is saying 70Mbps, unless the numbers in the screenshot are meant to be in MB/s?

In Malaysia I'm paying ~USD25 for a lowly 1Mbps DL which does not perform up to par on BT due to shaping.

I do tech support for a backbone internet provider that mostly sells 100 megabit, 1 gigabit and 10 gigabit internet connections (we're 15% of the Internet) and I see a lot of those speed tests from customers in North America. They go kinda wacky after you get above about 20 or 30 megabits. I've seen 100 megabit circuits that can be proven to work fine by other means that only get 2 megabits on a speed test site. The speed test on speakeasy.net has even put up a faq item that says "sorry we don't work over 20 megs". I've heard that some places in Japan have 50 megabit home Internet circuits available and I'm curious how they fare on the speed test sites.

I'm with Internode and pay around $100 a month for 40 gig. No cap, just "prioritized" once I hit my monthly limit.

It's pretty damn sucky, really - but Australia is a massive country, with hardly any inhabitants - so there are vast stretches of territory with no cities or towns available to link networks.

My connection goes 756kbps dl 213kbps upload.

I'm moving to a bigger city but can't expect for the speed to get any better.

Corporations here in Canada are lame. Although that is my top speed, when downloading i never exceed 300kb/s and I rarely upload, the only thing I upload is pictures because anything else is too long. I can't even share demo's on Halo 3 cuz 6 second demos take foreever and people just decide to leave lol.

Is it possible to get a japanese company to provide internet abroad? I suppose not, but its a question that needs answering.

Oh, btw the values are in Kb (384Kb down/256Kb up)not Mb . AFAIK almost all Malaysian ISP do not cap, but some do have shapings. However Malaysian is known to be abusive/taking advantage in anything. So most people here tends to download the INTERNET 24/7, and complaint about speed. Most likely never heard of bottlenecks =__=
I envy those with uber connections. Oh, besides Jp and Sweden, Taiwan (or was it Korea) too has uber 1337 connections, right?

Danny, your results confuse me. Are you trying to say you are getting 7.4 megabytes downstream? Because from what I can see you are getting 74 megabit connection downstream which is pretty dang good. Most people in the States are lucky to get 20mbps.

I'm 826K up and 321K down. Not bad for a 24 USD connection. That includes the landline BTW....

Man, when I was living in Yoko, our download AND upload speed was rediculous. It was their basic speed too, but I could grab files in seconds vs minutes, except stuff from overseas, those took maybe twice as long. I could always tell when something was hosted in the US vs Europe or asia.

South Africa's internet is monopolized by a single company so we all suffer here, I'm lucky to be uncapped, most people have a 1GB-3GB cap PER MONTH.

I got 243kbps up and 143kbps down and that is on a uncapped business ADSL package costing about R1350 (¥21918) per month.

Not that fast if you take into account what you can get in some countries but it's one of the faster internet connections available over here.

We are fortunate to have had gotten an uncapped connection since most other connections are capped.

I was always under the impression that Korea had the fastest broadband, something along the lines of over 50% of households had 100MBps speeds.

7.4Mbps/10Mbps for $50? Lucky guy...I only get 5Mb/768 kb(!) for €40....actually, it's not the problem of getting higher d-loads, but I still haven't found a provider that also offers decent upload speeds

When I was living in Belgium, we had 4.6Mbps dl/512Kbps ul and 12GB/month download limit -.-; Pretty sucky.
Got about 400kb/s dl speed, and 40kb ul speed.

Now I live in Finland, and we have some home network thing.

Basically, 1Mbps dl/ul, which sucks even harder!

I get about max 90kb/s dl speed, I can be happy when I hit the 80 tho. And about 70kb/s upload, which is better than in Belgium. I don't have any cap on download tho, which is good for leeching! :D

in malaysia, famous broadband provider TMNuts (TMNet) Streamyx is crap. No.1, 1.0mbps (BIT, not bytes) for RM77/88 a month, depends on the package with or without modem/router. What makes it crap, the PURPOSEDLY choose areas with lousy lines, so basically, your line is unstable.

and the newest 4.0mbps costs about RM268 or something....daylight robbery IMHO.

There ARE alternatives...like Celcom Broadband, about RM98 a month for 3.6mbps...but the modem costs RM1000 (it's those card-like modem), and Maxis, 3.2mbps RM98 a month but you need to use your phone as a modem, so double money wasted.

I got about 64000 on download and 3500 on upload.

What sucks in our broadband is the upload and the connections they say are never true currently I'm paying 43€ with limitless download at 8mb download and 512kb upload but the truth is that the maximum download I've reached has been 350kb/s via torrent and 420kb/s via download accelerator and the maximum upload I managed to do is 20kb/s and when I reach this upload it's almost impossible to use the net cause it gets so slow.

@MooMooCow1314 : If that Celcom truelly can give around 3Mbps download cosntantly, and you really need/use fast connection, rm1000 is worth the investment.
Back in the days when TIME was firstly introduced (2004?), I paid rm500 for the wireless modem, subscribed to 384/256. But my money were greatly invested as I get constant speed for BT, XDCC and direct till today.

The numbers you get really do put our internet connections into perspective. Yet another reason for me to get my ass over to Japan ^^

There is a problem in the UK with internet providers offering speeds that arnt actually true. So they will say its 16MB but you may only actually get 7MB. Then they come up with all sorts of excuses like your too far away from the source etc.
Seems stupid the prices we pay over here in the UK for a 16MB connection can be as high as what your paying for a personal fiber optic line.

Broad band isn't so good in my area, despite the fact I don't live too far from town (15 min trip). And all I can get is ISDN (128) between 3 computers (3 people using it at once). Unfortunately we already tried working out if we could get satalite and for the price/cap it wasn't worth it. Unfortunetly the prices for broadband are hideous when you include the 10 gig cap on 512 broadband which counts your uploads and downloads (satalite is 3 gig). I wish they would focus on improving broadband service here instead of 3G internet.

Singapore's internet connection was much quite alright, unless having the best internet plan(100Mbps)using cable else downloading and uploading are still pretty slow. Currently i am a promoter for BUFFALO in Singapore and using BUFFALO high-power wireless router which is a very reliable and popular brand in Japan. Anyway those looking for any networking product should give BUFFALO a go =)

Due to the monopoly that my provider, Comcast, runs over all of my area, I am forced to be with them if I want to have high speed internet. I run at 1.5mbs download and 1.5kbs for upload, and I pay $40 dollars a month for it. Not to mention that they forced me to get some sort of cable TV package as well to even get internet, even though I never watch TV.

I would love to be able to have a connection on par with Japan, surely I will once I am there though!

being in the UK and on DSL, Our providers advertise blindingly fast speeds but we never come close to achieving them.

My current provider advertises 8MB but I'm sure it's nowhere near that fast. But I can still download a 200meg anime ep in less than 30 minutes so it's not too bad. I shoudl really do a speed test and get actual numbers...

I get 1024kbs down and 256kbs up on a S$30 plan from SingNet. Not the fastest, but I think it's quite decent considering the price.

I'm in the UK and am fortunate enough to have a 24mbit ADSL2+ connection (through Be), which has been the case for a few years now. It is only £18/month, which is very good (in the UK) considering it is unmetered.

I often find myself getting 2MB/s+ over http, and about 1MB/s when using bittorrent, so I am fairly happy. 16420 down/1131 up on speedtest.net.

Unfortunately broadband outside of the major cities in the UK sucks quite a bit. The best my parents can get is 512kb/s, and they could only get broadband from 2003 onwards!

when i signed up for broadband in 2004, it costed me US33 monthly for a 256kbps

1 year later (2005) my account was free upgraded to 512kps with the same price.

another 1 year later (2006) it was discounted to US27 monthly.

another 1 year later (2007, it was further discounted to US21 monthly and on top of that i was given free upgrade to 1Mbps. ^^;

Jp,HK,Taiwan all can provide high u/d rates bcos most of the traffic are meant internaly. And traffic destined outbound are capped. I rember getting a 5mbps tops from a peer from japan.
Well hey ISPs have to pay the bills too ya know. Also since the fastest link to US from asia pac is via japan, traffic have to be shapped and throttle. (damn that Asia-America Gateway sub cable would really be handy anytime soon)

Well anyways, here in sg isp cap their bandwidth too. eg: here a cable plan lets u have 100/2 internaly while capped outbound traffic.

Though this aint that bad. Im using 12/.350 and im quite okay with it.

anyways... I have 2,5 Mbps, and here in argentina most of the people dont have broadband, they are with 56k modems .

I was using YahooBB for the longest time, then I switched to a small unheard of company because they offered internet + cable TV. Connection wasn't great so I went back to YahooBB. Great downloading speeds with YahooBB.

For all of you with crappy connections: At least you can join here and discuss. How cool is that?!

Thank goodness that the government got all the big telecoms together and covered most of Japan's metropolitan areas in fiber ten years ago, right?

So, how is service with BIGLOBE? I've heard horror stories from friends who had it, and were more or less forced to switch over to @nifty because of BIGLOBE's incredibly strict network restriction policy towards P2P.

Anyhow, I get around 12Mbps up/ 2Mpbs down (Lives very close to the LAN box thankfully) with unlimited traffic here for about 15USD a month which I think includes voice and a on-demand video thing via the ISP's site. (Wouldn't know since their site is impossible to navigate, and I don't have a phone of any kind...) This is coming from the slowest ISP around here, and via copper. For that price, it's not too shabby.

My download speeds depend very much on what site I'm trying to get on to... mercifully, dannychoo.com is pretty fast. The idea of fixing wiring etc. to the desk, out of sight, is a very good one, I'll try it!

Broadband speed in the UK is a load of shite. Thanks to the "upto" whatever speeds and the usage limits they have from 4pm till midnight. Maybe the Gadgetshows campaign maybe able to fix this. I have never even got close to a 4mb connection that I am supposed to be getting.

Am using a 1mbps broadband line sharing with 3-4 laptops and destops pc. Darn slow when opening web pages, downloading and not to mention sometimes services will be down.. darn you TM NUTS SCREAMyx.. (Malaysia Internet Broadband provider) sigh.. Malaysians deserves a better broadband!

I pay R600 (¥9741) per month for a 3.5GB cap which they proxy and shape to their liking. Really sucks.

Please allow me to explain my situation first. As a non-local, I'm going to be moving around and that means I'm not going to be able to get wired broadband (adsl, cable, and the kinds). My only option is therefore wireless broadband, and for that, I've got my eyes on Jaring.

What I want to ask is, does Jaring provide stable, rock-solid (none or rare drop-outs) connection with unlimited download? if they don't, what are the other alternatives?

Well, Belgium is one of those freaking countries that has got expensive internet and has limits to how much you can download. I do must say it's quite fast, but still unacceptable.

I can go at a max of 560 K/s (about 5.8mbps) down, and 128K/s (about 800kbps) up.
This is your usual 6MBps line and it's adsl. (although I actually upgraded to a 24mbps line, I never reach those speeds but it comes with higher limits (39.90euro for 60gb/month and 29.90 for 20gb, but I can go up to 40gb more per month for 1eur/4gb). And mind you, this is one of the cheapest... But I've got speed and bandwidth enough to run a server, which I'm not really doing at the moment)
And I'm downing about 60-80gb / month ^^;

I made a mistake in my previous post, I asked around, and was told the fastest connection in Finland is 24Mbps/3Mbps, for about 78€. Pretty expensive, but if you take the 1 Mbps upload, it'll cost you about 45€. (cheap compared to 10Mbps/1Mbps;same price some companies ask)
A lot depends on the area too, if you can have that kind of connection at all. Let's hope ! :D

right now im on cable paying 42 dollars for 6mbps but i planned on getting fiber optic but not sure if im going to move in my area in sacramento you can get for 50 dollars a fiber optic connection for 10 mbps upload/download and up to 50 mbps download and upload for 191 dollars if you get a package for all 3 service from that company which is rather cheap but... thing is why need the speed when not many have the upload power yet to really use it... so its a decent price around california

I heard someone complained about its upload and download speed is slow. Well compared to mine. i got a 512 kbps speed, 62kb (less) upload and download speed. i pay for at least US$61 per month.

I get about 15 mbps download when connected to my Giganews account, yet I only get about 7 mbps on the Speedtest site! Hmmmm..

I get about 2.5MB/s however I think the tests are inconclusive and only measure a snapshot of your connectionr ather than an average- the first test I got a max of 936 kb/sec but the second time I registered about 2.5MB/s. That is the University's speed for you- I'm not sure how fast or slow that is, but at home I know we can go faster. I am happy with the speed here on campus- some days it is slow and others it is fast.

I'm using Fastnet ( http://www.firstmedia.com ) which currently the fastest ISP in Jakarta (and Indonesia) for personal use. I'm using the 768 Kbps package which cost me about 33 US$ per month. It's quite fast, on average, I can download at around 500 Kbps.

i'm using a 12mbps down, 356kbps upstream from my country connection.. the upstream seriously suck big time.

even though there are DSL speeds up to 16mbps over here(which one can afford), i'm using my old reliable cable connection since 6 years. at first 2mbit then 6mbit. nothing better :D

I get around 700KB/s download on non-peak times. Could be better but I'm happy with it for now (it comes free of charge with my room). Didn't notice any significant changes when I used internet in Japan or Korea.

In addition, have you heard that TimeWarner is trying a "more bandwidth you use, the more you pay" system. Even though is in trials right now, I could see all providers doing that. Verizon is close behind.
