Sony Vaio P Boot Time

Akihabara News has timed how long it takes to boot up Sony's new Vaio Type P - 3:20 mins to a usable state.
Not surprised at all.
My MBP probably takes 1:30 mins but what I like about Macs is that they are usable just a few seconds after coming out of hibernation. Then again - my MBP is having trouble sleeping of late...

My PC usually takes about 2-3 minutes to boot up. But I rarely turn off my PC due to the strain put on the hard drive each time it boots up.
http://www.rxsiu.wordpress.com
strain on hard drive? how so?
student
http://kuiliu.wordpress.com
I wanna know why too.
Student
http://yellowguy89.blogspot.com/
at boot up, the hard drive has to start everything up, so it spins extremely fast, thats when your hard drive strains the most because its receiving so much tasks at one time, once boot up is finished, you'll sometimes notice that your computer goes "quieter", thats due to the rpm decreasing in your hard drive. It does extremely little damage, gradually, to your hard drive and its not significant enough to turn on your PC 24/7. But...I'm on a tight budget..so I want my PC's life maxed out. I only shut down my PC for installing new hardware and maintinence.

That's not a big issues these days [it was only really an issue about 7 or more years ago], actually, by leaving your computer on, you're wearing out all your other components even more so than if you were to simply turn it off.
Student
http://yellowguy89.blogspot.com/
the only other hardware that has significant ware down is the PCu, and maybe the video card if you overclock it. The other components are pretty much solid

Also be care full, some times (extreme) the oil can leave the ball bearings in the motor and won't be able to start up easily if they are on for too long.
I leave my pc on for months at a time, it's very rare. You can always turn on the HDD shutdown after a few hours of idling.

harddrives spin at constant speed, furthermore mainstream hardrives are not supposed to run 24/7, it is actually more dangerous to do so than booting up once a day or so...
Administrator
That's bullshit. HDs, for AFAICR, spin at constant speed. The noises you can hear from them are the motor noise and the clicking noise from the heads moving around. These noises whether loud or not depend on the manufacturer's designs for that generation. What you hear at boot time is actually your fans due to fan speed management system in your BIOS and chipset hasn't kicked in yet. This also depends on the motherboard though, as my motherboard fan speed management system kicks in just as I pressed the power button, unlike my computer at work.
To manage noises from HD, certain models support AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management) which has three mode to select from the best performance to the most quiet or you can turn it off for the best performance without acoustic management. What it does is to slow down the the heads, IOW you will have worst seek time for quieter HD. You can find free software on the net to do this for you.
What damage HD at bootup and shutdown is heat expansion and shrinking which HDs nowadays is not really sensitive to as long ago.
As for air cooling system being loud, I managed a few servers and at start up they're as loud as a tank >_<. The other system I manage is a small cluster (bunch of 1U server with small fans that spin at around a little over 10000RPM), the damn thing sounds just as sweet as a jet engine.
bum,hachi roku driver
^ agreed. didn't know that 10K RPM drives would sound nice like that though :D
must be cool to hear it up close.
Administrator
I meant the fans in these cluster nodes, not the HDs. As for the typical high RPM HDs out there (10K or 15K RPM), interface (SCSI, SAS or Fibre Channel) is irrelevant, they're not that loud compared to the type of computers they're attached to.
Yup. You are so right. Thus, I always put my laptop to sleep. I haven't turned it off since I bought it (around 3 years). I also have my 6 PCs at home ON all the time or I put them to sleep. never shut down a PC

At a guess 2-3 minutes. I'm usually occupying myself elsewhere whilst it's booting up.
My motherboard does have a bit of software though that allows me to go on the internet, skype, and do some other minor things without having to boot up everything. This pops up in about a minute, maybe less.

Actually, I noticed that virtual Windows installations often run faster than their "real" counterparts, especially when using a linux machines with a lot of RAM as a host (thanks to caching). That said, on my 8GB desktop, the 2GB Win7 VM indeed feels faster/a lot more response than my "main" 2GB WinXP VM.

30 seconds for my laptop.
Sony Vaio P cost about 79800 Yen and the function were better than others but the boot is quite slow due it's operation on Vista. That is why it is so slow on booting.

around 2~3 minutes to boot from a cold state for my PC running windows 7. Less than a minute if it's asleep but I tend not to use hibernate mode much.
and comparing boot times of a vaio P and an MBP is kinda unfair, don't you think? esp since the poor thing is running vista on top of it's not exactly powerful specs...
Service desk support
http://lookingglass.kokidokom.net
Oh, and I forgot to mention that, since I'm dual booting, my MBR asks what OS I want to run, which adds an extra 30 seconds to the boot time, so if you count that out, it's probably around 2 minutes bootup tops, with all my apps started as well. pretty good for what isn't exactly a powerhouse PC (Athlon64 3200+, GeForce 6600 and 2GB of RAM)
Yeah, I could skip the boot thing by staying around my PC, but I usually fire it up, do something else and then come back.

Three minutes? o_o That's ridiculous... My laptop is kind of slow because I have all this stuff on it but my desktop I recently upgraded is pretty fast. Probably boots Windows XP in somewhere between 30 seconds to 1 min.

I had problems with my MBP sleeping... Sometimes it wouldn't, and no matter what it would take a long time.
I don't know if it is related to your issue, but my problem is identified here: http://www.windley.com/archives/2007/10/fixing_macbook_pro_sleep_problems.shtml
I fixed it with this utility:

http://www.dannychoo.com/profile/eng/
Thanks for this - just installed. My problem is I get black screen after opening the lid - 100% of the time.
IT monkey/consultant
Glad it was of help!
I had the black screen problem, but only part of the time. Fixed after deleting the sleep memory and changing the sleep mode. It appears many others pegged that as the core of their black screen problems to, as I ascertain from the replies to what user clemson47 had to say on this thread helpful: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1478474
Of course, SmartSleep can take care of most of that (deleting the sleep memory and changing the mode) for you.
If that doesn't work, I would suspect hardware failure.
Benevolent dictator of a Banana Republic
Danny, are you using the manufacturer's video drivers or some official (ex. from Nvidia/ATI website) version? Sometimes, for example with Vaio laptops, the drivers provided by Sony or the vendor, include unofficial (as in Sony-specific) modifications to make ACPI (involved in sleep/hibernation process among other things like power management, etc) work, usually with closing the lid or whatever hibernation/sleep options you have set.
If you use unofficial or not supported drivers and they lack power management/ACPI support for your *specific* chipset and other components... a black screen on resume is a quite common symptom.
On OS X it should be fine, report the issue to Apple via Radar or send them a support request, phone them or something else. Don't send them a dolphin-in-a-box, tho!
Hope it helps.

Let see, my laptop with visit running on 2 ghz with 1 gb of ram with vista took over 5 minutes to boot up to a usable state, where as my pc with xp running on 2.0 ghz with 2 gb ram takes about 1 minutes and the pc with dual core takes 30 secs. I'm in the 1-2 minute range with Win7 on my main machine. Though it seems that it's about that amount of time for most of my computers, except my work laptop which spends a longer than usual amount of time in the POST screen. That and BitLocker causes it to wait for a prompt before the OS will even load...
But yes, main computer is under 2 minutes to Win7. Quad Core and 8GB of RAM certainly helps, methinks. As does a relatively quick hard drive.

also the OS is another factor itself cause vista is a resource hog, for computers with less muscle, it becomes obvious and bloatware that comes from sony also contributes to the embarrassing boot time(netbooks are supposed to be convenient to use not a chore).

lol. I`m quite surprised at the " yay mac " responses to an article of a slow booting Vaio P.
Im not defending the Vaio P here, cause I too think that it should have been something alot better than that and not worth the hype - but let`s be realistic here people.
The Vaio P uses 1.8 inch HDD which runs no faster than 3800rpm. tough Sony would have probably tweaked the speed down just like in their TZ series to be even lower.
The performance is horrible and slow, yet power effecient and small enough to put in these kind of devices.
It is **no way** comparable to a 2.5 inch HDD in a MBP , or a regular MAC for that case.
Thus, having this long a boot time - especially with Vista, comes as no surprise but it`s
hardly because of "OS superiority" cause for example my Main desktop uses mostly UW320 SCSI drives on 15.000 RPM aside from my local storage drive at 10K (the rest is on an external NAS)
which runs XP to a usable state in 15 seconds.
Does that make XP that great an OS and beat my stick on MBP guys with 1 1/2 minutes ?
Nope. It`s purely hardware at it`s work.

Mine is a Vista 64bit with a Core 2 Duo E4300 at 1.8G default speed and 3GB of RAM. Boot to login screen is under 30sec and to usable state should be quite under 1mins, around 40s. How fast a Windows machine boot depends on how you manage it, same for linux but I only use them under console mode.

I think 1-1,5mins is the maximum time a systemboot should take, but over 3 mins? not acceptable
same reason I think it's ridiculous that everyone is so hyped up about netbooks now, it's like going back in time.

3.2 minutes? That's probably longer than my ancient desktop's startup time.

It's frustrating that a computer takes any time to load at all nowadays. We live in the future after all. I won't be impressed with computers again until they load much faster and have less errors.

About a minute or so for me..
Pretty fast, considering that my old PC takes about 3 minutes more..

It depends on what you install in your OS. The more software(registry entries) there is, the longer it takes for the computer to boot up. Doesn't even matter if you have the latest Core i7 or whatever processor.
I have an old P4 PC and it only takes less than a minute to boot up XP. Of course, the only stuff installed in that computer are web browsers and microsoft office stuff =p
Even my C2D PC takes longer to boot up than it ^^;

My Fujitsu-Siemens laptop takes a little less than a minute to boot up, fast enough for me. But I mostly use sleep or hibernate and that is faster.
i have an old pentium4 1.8ghz pc and it takes 38 sec to boot up lol, and the rest takes less than a minute too, its just defrag and disable useless services.....

love sony, hate vaio
I had to install a new vaio the other day. A performance giant !
to install vista and to boot up in general, it takes like FOREVER
insane.

Vaio does come with lot of pre-loaded crap. Lucky they offer a "Vaio Uninstaller" now on their website, that list what you need to keep for button & driver functionality and what is crapware that can be uninstalled.

My PC running Vista takes about a minute to load up, while my laptop using Windows 7 Beta only takes 30 seconds at most. I can't wait for Windows 7 to officially come out so I can put that on both of them ^^i

This totally depends on your definition of usable. For example, I can load up my kernel pretty fast (custom linux kerneld, not many run commands, statically configured interfaces, etc.) and drop me to a shell in about 10-15 seconds. At that point, I can surf the web, play music, instant message, send e-mail, burn CDs, pretty much anything I usually do without even starting Xorg.

Mine bots up in less that 2 minutes. Mine is brand new. Just go it today.

I read over engadget that vista on the vaio p really does take a long time to boot up but with windows 7 it was significantly faster. Vista is really a resource hog so I wouldn't be surprised about the performance especially on a netbook/ultraportable.

Man, and I was thinking of getting one of these P-Series Vaio too. Maybe next year if they continue improving it, increase the HDD or SSD size and have either Windows XP or Windows 7. Heck if it didn't have Windows Vista, I think that would've made it much more attractive.

Somehow...I feel that people have been underestimating their computers' boot time. If you count from the point where you press the power button, my computer is fully usable at around 1.5 minutes. My netbook usually takes about 2 minutes (and it's an eee pc 700 series, so much, much slower than the sony above).
I basically got to the "pick your OS" screen after at least 30-40 seconds after I pressed the power button.
