A collection of games owned by Gordon.
Are you honest and buy your games or do you prefer to obtain open-sourced copies?

Original text from gordon below.

So what we are seeing here is somebody's humble collection of PC games boxes. Most of them are games from the late 90s to early 21st century.

If you might have noticed, PC games boxes of the last century are big like cereal boxes. Nowadays almost all PC games out there come in standard small boxes. I much preferred the big boxes. The current packaging looks boring and lacks character.

Do you buy original games? If so do you prefer big or small boxes?

I personally perfer the big old boxes. I used to love how some companies would try to fit in as much crap as possible in the boxes(shirts,posters...etc). I'll probably post a picture of my old PC box collection as I have quite a few.

By the way, if you love old PC boxes, then you'd definitely love NeoGeo AES cart boxes.

I'm really dating myself but I have a lot of the same boxes in the picture. Let see: Doom, Doom ;II; Neverwinter Nights series: Baldur's Gate I, II - Sword Coast of Amn, II - Throne of Bhaal; Half Life series; Warcraft II, III, Prince of Persia, Diablo I, II; No One Lives Forever I, II; Icewind Dale I, II, II - Heart of Winter; Command and Conquer, Freedom Force; Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic; Age of Mythology.

Heck it's probably easier to list what I don't have. >.<

I probably got some stuff that would put that guy to shame: original gold box D&D, Warcraft I, Quake, etc.

Oh and the original Super Mario Bros. as well as the first two NES Zelda games.

For computer I have some of the old Wing Commander games too.

When I found Wing Commander IV a year or two ago in perfect condition with the box and everything at a garage sale for $2,I was ecstatic.

I got tonnes of games here...PC games..PS1,2 many...I got too many..
    You all know why?
Malaysia didn't sell original games for consoles or pc..actually not didn't sold is really hard to find.
    All the game shop sell pirated games..1 PS2 game = RM5 PC game 1 DVD = RM10 XBOX 360 1 dvd = RM 8..
Gundam Musou 2? PS2 ver USD 40? here RM 5!

Very true indeed. One original game, be it pc or ps game, could cost up to RM150++. I assume it would cost at about $70 in Singapore.
So most gamers in Malaysia resort to pirated version, even the rich dudes.
We are still waiting for the pirated version of PS3 games...hehe..

Don't dream on pirated PS3 games. SCE are very smart when they design the PS3. They should have learned what happen to PS and PS2 pirated games problems.

Rich dudes who buy pirated games to play when they can afford the original are cheap.

Anyways, if pirated games does come out for the PS3 it spells really bad trouble for Sony since for every PS3 console sold, Sony does not make any profit but is actually making loses since the cost of production is higher than the retail price. Sony makes profit through royalties or contracts from original games sold. You get the idea.

Definitely prefer the small boxes. Never liked the big ones - take a lot of room. The new ones resemble DVD-cases more, which I find a definite improvement. It just means all the iamges/text/etc is scaled down.

It also saves paper and ink and is marginally better for the environment. *cough*

The best way for shop to lower the price is to wait. During the recession, the shops will try to get rid the slow moving games by offering them at a lower price. The only games the don't drop their value are the highly anticipated games like Diablo III and Starcraft II. They will offer at a better price after a year or two under Greatest Hits or Game of the Year sets.

I prefer small boxes since I'm the type to not throw anything out.

In terms of games, I buy those that I really want to play. If I'm just getting something to play the campaigns, I'd just get it from the net or borrow it, play through the campaigns and dispose of it. Online play is a different story because (ironically) I think stealing cd keys is wrong.

While I realize you are just an Apple fanboy, please don't sully the idea of open source by equating it to software piracy. As a developer yourself, you should realize that legally free software (Open source) is not the same as free software (pirating copyrighted software).

Well doesn't open-source mean that it is free?? So why do you say "are you honest"? If its open-source like many games available today then it not a matter of honesty or piracy, but a matter of not spending money. Now if you mean do i prefer to buy games or download them and get cracks or whatever, than the answer is no i don't.

I think you should reword this post...

I confess that I ever buy open source before, until I'm frustrated with a game called "Final Fantasy IX". It always crashed at the end of Disc 1 and the beginning of Disc 2. Even I have change the open source two times, the crashes persist. Finally I run straight to a game shop and bought an original copy and cleared the three discs out of four without a hick-up. Since that day, I never touch a single open source copies since.

I own about almost 200+ original copies of U/C PS2 games and now currently playing some of them on my PS3. My latest PS2 games are Yakuza 2, Persona 4 and Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories.

I also buy originals for all my PC, PSP, DS, Gameboy Advance, Xbox360, Wii And PS3 games.

The Baldur's Gate Saga is a MUST ! (Icewind Dale is also not bad) Really, these old Roleplay-Games are fantastic, never played any better Roleplay-Game since then.

K, back to topic, i often buy games i really want to have. One point is, to support the people, who are doing so much effort for creating such good games. Another point is, copies "don't" have extras ^^

I've thought about pc/video-games a time ago and i was asking me, what will happen if all the companies who make games, would stop their work for 1 or 2/3 years ? (for this kind of situation they become money support for their employee's, that they become money but don't have to work) As a protest against all the copies of their work. Not against the people, who buy games, but it is meant as a signal, what could happen, if the game-companies are going out of money because of not selled games and the massive number of game copies. Haha, what an idea ...

Nice collection! I have "Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic" and "Age Of Empires II" as well, officially bought. Terrific games, real classics. ^^

Well, with games I only purchase one every so often (PC or console), when it really appeals to me, I'll try it out and buy it, usually it's rpg or rts games.
Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of great fps games out there, but their replayability is usually poor and when you see an fps (certainly when new) will cost you a bundle for maybe only 10 hours of gameplay whereas an rpg or rts may give you over a hundred hours of gameplay for the same price, I prefer to invest in those.

I prefer the big boxes of the early 90s. I remember when games were still put in floppy discs and their boxes were huge...similar to the Diablo boxes. There was just one floppy disc and a boatload of manuals and papers in there. hahah!

It depends on how the packaging is. Currently I would prefer smaller ones to save space. Especially if the big boxes are plain and have ugly art I don't care about. If the box is special, or has some nice looking art, I would prefer it larger.

I could probably line 2 walls top to bottom in my house with all games I have bought since 1982 (atari 2600) up. Most of the game boxes I have were collapsed into its flat self and I have most of them and a 4 foot by 2 foot box full of the manuals. A few expansions for MMO's I was playing were digital so no box for them (bought from the game company).

In the 1980's and 1990's I rented an untold amount of games for the Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Usually beat those in 3 days or less with no cheats and didn't have the internet then to look up hints.

I prefer to buy my games rather than download like a friend of mine... with his PSP games and his DS games.... the only games I download are ones I can't easily get. Eroge's and visual novels for example. Just a few days ago I finally bought Digimon Championship, mega addictive game, gameplay resembles Monster Rancher a bit, only you can have way more monsters as opposed to just one lol. I love it, loved it in Japanese lol(my friend downloaded that too lol.)

New console/PC games are expensive in my neck of the woods, and second-hand game market is almost non-existent.

When everyone was talking about how good and fun Suikoden V (PS2) is, I knew it was heavily pirated when the sales figures were released. In fact, posters openly admitted on game forums to piracy and rationalized this was actually helping sales by spreading the game's popularity on the Internet.
