Japanese School Girl Skirts

I think I may have mentioned it before but once upon a time, I used to think that Japanese school girls were made to wear shorter skirts as they grew older. Turns out that they actually roll them up at the waist and the reason many tell me is because it makes them look cute.

Both of these girls are from the same school - the one on the left has done some rolling - one one on the right wears the default length. Which do you prefer?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

The default skirt length seems a bit long in Japan.

Here in the US where uniforms are required - only at private schools - it's noticeably shorter, they fall just an inch or so above the knee and never over. However, that may be because girls here in the West have longer legs.

I went to a private school and girls almost always rolled their skirts up. Tied in with the button down long sleeved shirt, it was mega cute. Add in a rainy day. Heaven.

Forgot to add...a -white- button down long sleeved shirt.

Unfortunately, they changed it at my old high school since girls started to wear colored bras. Now's it's all pale blue.

Yea. When I see the default skirt length in other countries it makes me shake my head a bit. They're all so...long (>oo)>

After living around short skirts all my life seeing a long one surprises me. "What? A long skirt, what's that?"

Shorter is cuter. When I was in school, our uniform was either an A line skirt (horrible) or a pencil skirt that was loose and with a tiny split at the back.

Us girls would buy a size too small, and slit it up the back to mid thigh. It looked way hotter :)

Looks like Danny doesn't wear enough skirts to know this stuff. :P I prefer short skirts, but that's only because I have the legs for them. I think that's something to consider when setting the uniform codes, because just how many nice legs are there where you go watching for short skirts. Don't lie, you all go the long way home just to see pretty girlies. XD

i was told that it's due to the work culture in Japan, especially in offices, that doesn't entitle them to expose their zettai ryouki and thus they make full use of their time as students to do so.

sounds like a mating method to me as they may not (perceive themselves to) be as attractive wearing the typical office wear in future.

    Some of the gals in my secondary school days used to roll up their skirt to become a mini skirt. They also tuck in their blouse to make their 'eyes' look bigger (for those with big eyes of course). Do enjoy watching them, but these gals are mostly 'ah lian' during that time which is 10 years ago. ^^;

I've seen girls from a private school near the area my wife went to high school. The girls wear their skirt just a little above their knee to mid thigh and look so darn cute. Point a camera in their direction and you will go into moe overload. ^o^

At any rate, I like what ever looks good. Young Japanese woman should wear them short while they can do it. When they get older it looks foolish.

I was a student in an all girls school and obviously we all do the same thing at least once. Well there is a regulation about skirt lengths and stuff.. Not all the time but once in a while teachers begin to control your uniform, (mostly in the morning assembly) you can open the folds quickly.. though it was an all girls school all the male teachers were old (oh boy) So most of the girls fold their skirts end of the day. But folding looks really bad cos there is always something around your waist like a wheel.. heh very nostalgic memories..

When you are 15 you think you are not sexy enough obviously cos you are still a kid.. so ended up doing ridiculous stuff like folding your skirt up ^_^.. in my opinion normal skirt length and hime-type of high school girls are the best and cutest.. I miss my uniform T_T

either way is fine as long as the girl is hot =)
i actually knew that the girls fold their skirt up from a shoujo manga. yes I read them from time to time (sometimes shoujo manga is more ecchi than boys oriented manga o.o)
really it depends on the girl, not the skirt length.

It should be left as a matter of choice. In a perfect world where all men were gentlemen and all girls were safe, I would say the miniskirt :). In the world we live in, where not everything is as innocent as we might wish for, I would say the long skirt is better. The real test (of course) is to imagine that it is your 15 year-old daughter who has to wear whatever skirt you decide on!

Actually, even though I voted short, it really depends. If they wrap their innocent bodies and souls in a deep-colored school uniform, and walk slowly as to not disturb the pleats in their skirts and to not toss their white sailor scarves, I would much rather prefer long. :o
