Internet Savvy Parents

Was reading some articles at What Japan Thinks regarding Internet usage among seniors in Japan which got me wondering how many of you have Internet savvy parents?

My mum used to be able to use mail about 10 years ago when I got to Japan but she kept going on about the phone bill so stopped - was dailup at the time.

My dad is a bit more Internet savvy - can use mail, watch my vids on YouTube and even has a Facebook account ^^;

My wifes parents use Skype and browse dannychoo.com because when I was ini China last I set the default page to dccom ^^;

Unrelated pic of Saber after I styled her hair with some styling spray. If you are doing the same then spray on to your hand and then apply - don't spray directly onto the wig as your Dollfie will complain. Saber is such a cutie pie.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Dollfie category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

    Nice. Saber has an ahoge!

    My parents know quite a bit since they do networking, programming, web and application design.

    However when it comes to stuff like Youtube, FaceBook, MySpace, instant messanging then they don't.

    My aunt though - mother to three children - knows a ton about social sites and the likes.

    My parents both use Gmail now and well... my dad is on the computer ALL the time it seems like. My mom uses the email when no one's using the computer. Browsing and other computer related things they're not very savvy. Danny, if you stayed in front of the computer as long as my dad does you wouldn't have 5000+ in your inbox ^^;

    Ahaha - sneaky sneaky, Danny, setting someone else's home page to your own site. ^^;

    My mom has recently gotten 'Net savvy - well, for a couple things anyway. She's good at browsing YouTube, and finding open-source music. And she does mail. That's about it.

    My dad though...my dad works in IT. In computer networking. >_> Because of his professional paranoia my home network is extensively firewalled and extremely non-torrent-friendly. I have to go to Uni to download everything.

    My mom much more so than my dad; she's actually the one who taught me HTML back when I was in 5th grade. Most of her computing time now though is spent playing arcade-style games (like Mahjongg), photo editing, or on I Can Has Cheezburger. ^^; My dad mostly just reads blogs and does remote access to his work computer from his laptop at home, he mostly just emails for work and when he and I need to sort out expenses from my college savings. I instant message with them both more than we talk on the phone anymore, and have been trying to get them to use Skype.

    My mom's parents are both fairly good with computers, my grandpa has done a fair bit of MATLAB/Mathematica/Maple work and FORTRAN programming as a physicist, and my grandma mostly just emails. My dad's mom one day a few years ago decided she wanted a computer, and she's come a long way since day 1 when she tried to move the cursor by picking up and rotating the mouse. I even got her to upgrade from the old Gateway which is now in my collection to a Mac Mini. ^^ My granddad (dad's dad) refuses to go anywhere near it though.

    My father is deceased, but he worked with computers... mostly mainframe though.
    I don't think he was very Internet savvy, but did the basic e-mailing and stuff.

    As for my mom.... well, I tried several times to teach her stuff, she did a basic computing course, and I know she checks e-mail from time to time... other than that, I don't think she does much.

    She tries to do some banking from time to time, but almost everytime I go back to my hometown I have to fix something with my computer or my Internet connection.

    Most of the times, a simple ADSL modem reseting and rebooting the laptop (I got her an EEE PC) will do the trick.

    My parents are kinda iffy in the internet, because I had to set up my mom's myspace so she could communicate with her gal friends, and my step father apparently doesn't know how to shop for good prices on the net. ^^; They both can mail, watch videos (now that I've taught them), and do their bills online.     my mom finally learnt how to use the e-mail last year after she took some courses for something else. I'm very happy for her, and it's a bit easier to get in touch with her now :P My dad knows how to use the e-mail as his work required him to. Both should probbaly know how to surf the internets I think :P Not sure if they know my website tho -- mom will have LOTS to say about the eye sizes I been drawnin ^^;

    I'm proud to say my parents are tech savvy (at least compared to their generation) today because I sat down and taught them.

    Email and the Internet were the two killer apps for them, so I taught them to double-click the blue E (now an orange fox) on the desktop and then how to log on and use their email account. After that it cascaded. My dad probably couldn't get by without online banking and being able trade stocks, and my mom uses Skype to talk to my brother in Washington, DC.

    How's that old saying go, about teaching someone to fish...

    Don't underestimate your parents. Personally, I am still teaching my boys about technology, networking and the social aspects of the cyber world. Even if they know nothing today, chances are good they know someone who can show them a useful thing or two if they felt like they needed it. They both also seem to have this unshakeable belief that the internet is like a sort of company that one man owns and you can "ask" the internet things... Like checking in one encyclopaedia. When she hears on the news about child porn on the web, my mom will say something like "why do they let that on the internet?" as if you have to send off to some guy who runs the whole internet and ask his permission to put anything on the 'net.

    My mom used computers at work for like 10 years but she stopped in '95 and since that is ages ago in computer history she isn't really able to handle a modern computer.
