Cover of the up n coming Strike Witches 5th DVD found at yunakiti.
Sanya and Eila look gorgeous. Need a poster of this. Speaking of DVD's, when was the last time you bought one? And how about Bluray? Anybody bothering with it?

An article over at Itai News talks about Sony made a mistake investing so much money in promoting Bluray.
Was going to get the Bluray version of Transformers but the "DVD" that I have is good enough for now.

Lolz 6% after my vote, what now~? Well seriously most of my film archives are VHS since my family don't buy movies often. We just watch movies on cable TV and maybe sometimes record on our dvd recorder, but we still have a VHS player. Otherwise I download anime and what not, but those aren't really DVD archived into physical form.

Today VHS would be the cheapest way to save money, but i do like your strategy there. Unfortunately VHS players are gone here. Everyone has DVD players for sale and at discount prices ever since BluRay was announced to the world.

Obviously most of my stuff is on DVD, but that's only because it's been the main media that anime has released on in the last 10 years. But I ALWAYS buy the blu-ray versions now when it's available. DVDs look laughably bad in comparison. Especially since broadcast TV airs nearly everything in HD these days, DVDs are looking more and more out of date.

I'm buying DVDs from Amazon these days, much cheaper, but taking a risk when they ship it because the disc comes loose in the case and gets scratched... just like my Gurren Lagann, so now I can't continue it yet >_< Got MariMite 2nd season from them recently.

    I bother with blu ray.

Once you have the whole thing set up, you can't really go back. Ironman looks amazing on my 32in HDTV on bluray. I can only imagine what it would look like if I had a larger TV capable of showing off 1080p properly!!!

The problem is the amount of time and money you need to invest to actually get the quality difference. The advantages are also not as apparent as from VHS to DVD so a lot of people don't bother, but it really does look stunning!

and HD Movie downloads are a con!!!

I understand the money part, but what do you mean by "time"? A blu-ray player doesn't take any longer to set up then a DVD player. If anything, with HDMI becoming the standard, it's probably faster getting a blu-ray player set up. Just plug it in and go.

unfortunately, it's not quite as simple as plug in and go.

To get the best picture quality, you do need to calibrate the TV and set the contrast, brightness, colours, etc to get the best pic quality, otherwise you're not reaping all the benefits.

took me a couple days to set everything up and calibrate my TV in my room.

BLu-ray's aren't all that practical just yet for my neck of the woods, players are still expensive unless you have a PS3 and/or HD TV, and the Discs themselves are still worth a finger more or two than what you'd pay for DVD's.

Ha, I had exactly the same thought about getting Transformers on Blu-ray since that's the only movie I could come up with that I'd like to have on Blu-ray. But I've already got it on DVD and when you watch that on the PS3 in Enhanced mode on a HD LCD TV, it already blows my mind and rectinas!! :P

sony was smart to invest alot into BluRay, it essencially forced its rival HD-DVD to crash and become obsolete and gain a huge margin in advances over Microsoft durring the console wars.

BluRay titles are being released at the same time as DVD and offer a Theatrical resolution format for those who own BluRay players and HDTVs.

its slowly becoming mainstream and offers lots more options for media, you can expect all the vol. of strike witches to be made into one BluRay in the near future.

i purchase alittle of both, depending on what kinda shows or movies im watching.

Not entirely so yet, true that Blu Ray (with Sony a sone of the biggets investors) managed to win a format war but the Blu Ray camp is licking its wounds too, it cost them a lot.

Plus the biggest foe of Blu Ray is not its cost or illegal downloads, it's DVD. The leap from VHS to DVD was so tremendous in terms of quality and durability, the leap from DVD to Blu Ray is less pronounced, mostly there's a quality difference, but most people will not see it worth the added investment, certainly not when you look at the prices of DVD's. While anime DVD's can still be expensive (though the current move to go to cheaper full season boxsets is a blessing) most other movies and series on DVD rae rather inexpensive. Plus for recent titles shot in HD Blu Ray is worth it, but older titles? Most are just poor upscales, some were not even decently converted to DVD in the first place.

How much money was Sony pooling into Bluray? Was it disproportionately high compared to the other partners?

No blurays for me. The old TV I have wouldn't be able to appreciate the smidgen of grain there might not be there between DVD and bluray, and it might be a little longer for a dirt cheap regionless player to find its way to Chinatown. Better off finding high quality encodes of the transport streams from broadcasts you can find floating around... unless they have some horrific censoring.

    As for blu-ray, I'll probably get it when I get a PS3. Yeah, a PS3. Have to wait a loooong time =.="

I have never bought a Blu-Ray movie and won't be buying until price drops & anime series available here.
But if I buy Blu-Rays I need new Full-HD display & Blu-Ray player, too expensive.
DVD still has long life ahead.

Bought a few DVD boxes this year, the last one was in November if I remember correctly. If I get a blu-ray drive on my pc or get a PlayStation 3 (the second in not very likely) then I'll definitely check it out. But maybe you need also a big screen to see the difference..

DVDs will be here for a while. I'd like to go Blu-ray very much ("It's a Sony!") but the main things putting me off are the fact that the region coding has gone against us Europeans (making it difficult/expensive to go multi-region without having to play it through a computer) and that anime on Bluray is either very limited (in English) or very expensive (in Japanese).

I do believe that anime looks great in HD - it's good to see crisp lines and minimal motion artefacts!

I'm not getting a BluRay. I don't have the appropriate equipment to enjoy all the BluRay quality. Also, I believe that the DVDs have a very good quality, mostly when we compare the prices of both medias.

And I don't think that the BluRay will last long, since in my opinion the next generation of media will not be set on discs, but in cards, like the ones already been used for image recording.

I have a PS3 but BluRay costs too much compared to DVDs. Also I have an account that lets me stream DVDs online so I don't buy DVDs either. I think Bluray is going to fail since everything is moving toward digital distribution. I know my DVD streaming service (netflix) is planning on releasing some HD quality (possibly bluray quality) stuff within the next few years.

I really feel that I have to step in here as there is no way "HD" downloads will ever reach the quality of bluray in the near future. To do so will require a network which can handle far more data than it currently can and download speeds which are currently unthinkable.

The only thing digital distribution has over bluray is the convenience of the lack of a physical media. Gizmodo has a good article on HD downloads on their Giz explains section. If bluray does fall, it won't be because of digital distribution but simply the lack of understanding from the public and general misinformation.

But I watched some HD content on my Xbox360 just for kicks and the difference was staggering.

Having a PS3 made me get Blu-ray. I only have 5 films, all of which have been out for a while and were quite cheap. I'd never buy a DVD or Blu-ray at full price. With downloads I could get them cheaper/free but I still like having a physical disk. But then paying £20-£30 on a Blu-ray film is just silly. Comparing my DVD collection to others mine's tiny.

where do you buy your blurays? The most expensive ones I've seen are £17, which is similar to what DVDs were when they went mainstream. But generally, I just take advantage of the 2 for 1 offers everyone has for blu ray.

I still have older anime on VHS, but a ton of my collection is DVD by now...no HD yet, as I lack a player.

My last VHS was a Galaxy Angel tape I got back in 2003 somewhere in Tokyo. Never got around to watching it as it's shrink-wrapped and I realized then it would likely be the last anime VHS I would ever buy. ^^

My movie collection is DVD only (and VHS before that).

I also have no intentions of buying Blu-ray right now.

Blu-ray (or any other new media) will only get my attention when we have cheap recorders and cheap blank media to make backups.
I'd even buy an HDDVD recorder if they made it cheap.

blu-ray is awesome but a bit overpriced when I can get a bunch of 10 dollar DVDs vs 20-50 dollar blu-ray disks. I'm happy with watching DVDs on my PS3 because the picture looks pretty good (HDMI connection to TV)!

I got around 6 bluray movies and I find them significantly better than the dvds i own ONLY with the right equipment which costs more than the bluray and player combined. lol. Honestly, I think they released bluray too soon but for sure it will be the next dvd in the future.

/me has most of my collection on VCDs, some on the rare DVD, TV recordings on VHS and a couple of hundred of gigabyes of video on harddrives.

Someone would have to burn every single DVD in the world to get me to buy a BD movie. Really, I don't plan on buying Bluray movies for a very while, though I have a PS3 to play them on. I still have hundreds of DVDs to get, especially Volumes 8 and 9 of Death Note with the figures~..
