Akihabaranews got some video footage below too - not only did it look slow bit Akihabara news also said it was slow first hand too.
Performance wise we had some trouble watching Dailymotion HD Video, however, Sony's staff took on this problem and showed us a nice Full HD trailer running smoothly on the Vaio P with Windows Media Player (they had to close all open software). As for boot time... not up to expectations, Vista is still a resource hog and installing 7 on this beast may be the best thing to do.

I used to be a sony fanboi many moons ago and had a few Vaio machines - looked cool but performance was crap.
I asked a comrade who worked at Sony what was that all about and she said that what Sony try to do to keep costs down is to first design a cool looking product and when thats done take existing parts / technology thats 10 years old (her own words) and try to stuff it in.
Anybody here owned and felt the pain of Vaio machines?

They've had pocket PCs of this sort for years. I remember seeing pocket PCs from Toshiba back in 1996/1997 when they ran Windows 95 and later a slimmed down version of the operating system that was the forerunner of Windows CE. Stuff like this isn't really that new. The solid state drives of 60 - 120 GB yes and the nice screen, but everything else about it is pretty mediocre.
They should also do themselves a favor and not run Vista on it. Vista is so resource intensive and pocket versions of any OS has its own issues in terms of compatibility. I can already see the headache for the IT tech trying to get one of these on the corporate network, getting it to run the corporate email package, etc. just because some exec brought it home from Japan because he thought it was cool.
I've only heard second hand stuff about Vaios. I thought they mostly targeted the casual user and students. I wouldn't recommend any Vaio model as a corporate standard (I used to evaluate desktop / laptop machines for a couple of fortune 500 companies). For corporate users, I'd go with a manufacturer that a) could commit to not switching out components for as long as possible, b) had good channels for distributions, c) had a strong track record for support. Sony (at least for it's Vaio line) wouldn't fit any of those criteria.

I've been out of that line of work for quite some time, but I used to recommend IBM (now Lenovo) for laptops, and Compaq (now HP) for desktops. None of the companies are what they used to be (Lenovo IMO got better, HP got worse) when I evaluated machines, so take this with a grain of salt.
I looked at Dell and at the time they were really more focused on the consumer market. It bothered me that two machines of the same model they shipped me for eval had significant differences with chip sets and componentry. That's a non-starter for a corporate client. I have no idea how good / bad they are now. Toshiba's corporate line from what I remember was quite good too, but I heard they aren't what they used to be.

Typing this on a Vaio right now. It is getting pretty old (over 4 years!), so will be replaced very shortly though; I will probably get a MacBook as I want to try developing some apps for the iPhone, and to see if OSX deserves the hype.

900 USD (basic model) for what is essentially a netbook, no thanks. Similar netbooks with similar specs cost around 300-500USD. Also running Vista on a netbook, i wonder how well it will perform. The only thing i do admit is the weight and slick design of it...However, i still love my Acer Aspire One to death.

This is Sony jumping on the whole "netbook" bandwagon. Specs wise, it's not bad and it's a good looking product. It's the only netbook I know that starts off with 2GB of ram, which is what you at least I reckon what you need to run Vista.
I work as a graphic designer at an IT distribution company (we distribute the Xbox 360 as well) and the numbers we move on netbooks (like Asus EeePCs, HP mini, Acer One, Lenovo S10s, Benq U101, etc) are quite amazing.
As for the Sony Vaio products, I've always thought it was too over-priced compared to other brands. I like their designs but I wouldn't pay for that extra cost for it or just for their brand name.

I still use a Vaio, a U70p that dates back to 2003. It's my primary internet computer even though I have Mac Pro. It's usually left on and does not utilize as much electric as the Mac Pro there by not impacting my electric bill.

I actually have two Vaios - one of which is my old laptop, which I'm going to be giving away soon. It's a bit like an early MacBook Air, in that you can disconnect it from a docking station and it becomes a very slim, CD-less laptop. Very good and very reliable (both of them as I had one before it), but would never have paid the original price it sold for.
Second is the family PC, which does look nice. Was only marginally less powerful and looks much better downstairs. Still running fine (fingers crossed).
Am currently using a Samsung laptop, but the iffy build quality and speed with Vista tempt me back towards a Vaio. Or a MacBook, if I could stump up the cash...

I'm sure it's not that bad. I had a friend of mine that bought a "gaming" PC from a shop that does business on the web and was shocked to discovered that the builder still put a IDE (not SATA) hard drive into it. I didn't even think they sold IDE compatible motherboards anymore so I suspect it was just old stock. I told him to return it and I ended up pretty much building one out for him for about $600 US less than what he spent. What's really lol worthy is my friend's hardcore gaming requirement is Maple Story.

You still see plenty of motherboards around that have one IDE controller on for downwards compatibility. (Like mine.)
This is actually especially critical when you buy premade cheap PCs online. For some reason people then like to stuff an old IDE drive, and like a DVD drive onto the same controller, which lets the entire system spin into performance hell. -_-'
Can't understand why you would do that nowadays, either, given the pricetag of current SATA HDDs. It's probably old stock that's still piled up in storage somewhere and that people want to get rid of.

I even saw in one add here in Singapore that they are selling what they say is a "Gaming System" but it only has 512kb Ram, 80gb Hard drive running on windows vista. Plus the VGA is onboard. What kind of games can you actually play on those things? Vista on a 512kb RAM (even if it's the home basic) is really slow. then you still need to share some RAM to your VGA since it's an onboard VGA. How much RAM would you still have? And an 80gb Hard Drive? How many GB of Hard Drive Space does vista needs? And the games nowadays eats up a big chunk already. I remember before that the first Dawn of War with all the expansions is already around 20gb I think. What else can you fit in that small Hard Drive?

Wow... a Sony employee actually saying that about their own machines. I think certain Sony products are nice... just not the vaio line. The unique appearance of their laptops and desktops are quite impressive but lets face it, you're paying a premium price tag for a computer that is really worth about half its value. A friend of mine has multiple vaio machines and she loves them. Oddly enough... they don't break on her... the same can't be said for my brother's girlfriend's machine. She had her enormous laptop for less than a year and one of the hinges broke. I only saw it after and it was not a pretty sight... This machine is like the first gen macbook air for me. Light weight and unique but certain aspects tick me off a lot. In this case, its the small screen.

I almost bought a Vaio once... Those specs are very minimal... 2GB ram for Vista is not enough to do much. And I see that they say it's slow. Rams are quite cheap and small these days, why not make it 4 GB at least? Sheesh!

I found that Vaios tend to be fairly decent and somewhat reliable but not worth the premium price they command, same as macs really. You're paying for the brand.
For the most part, sony electronics are very good. The only issues i've had was with their camera (specifically, the T9) and one vaio laptop, which was negated as I knew another friend who had the same laptop model and it worked very well.
But I was surprised that they were putting vista on the Vaio P. As stated, that OS is a resource hog and it would have made more sense to delay the launch by a few months and put windows 7 on it.

Never got a Vaio before and don't see how they've kept the prices low for the 10 year old parts. My friend has one and never complained about it so I'm guessing that it works fine. I would probably never get a small computer with less then 2 ghz of ram, that would be like back to my windows 95 days.

I have a VAIO right now. Well, it's still partly a Vaio. I had to replace the power supply, the motherboard and the case because I upgraded the RAM. (The case was just because the motherboard was full-sized, the Vaio case is only a 3/4) But that was really the only problem I've had with it.

I am currently using one. And I chose Sony and not Apple because of three reasons:
1) At the time, Apple's Bootcamp still had issues.
2) Sony is my other favorite electronics company, next to Apple.
3) Satsuki Igarashi (CLAMP) once said she uses Sony Vaio.
I think I only truly enjoyed it for a month or two before issues came up. I mean, I paid a tad bit more for a custom model, and issues ended up arising. A couple of dead pixels formed on the screen, mouse pad does not work properly at times, and yeah... Up to one point, RO (the MMORPG) almost crashed my laptop.
So yeah... It's either this or my iMac G4. And I only use my iMac for music and storage since it has slowed down a bit over the years. And when I have the money, I am going to stick with Mac. Because no offense to Sony, but they either need to look into a Mac/PC hybrid or even their own OS... Because this no longer works for me.

This VAIO type P looks like its meant for business instead of entertainment. If you want to type up emails, essays and browse the web then its perfect for on-the-go research. But if you just want to browse youtube all day outside then I suggest you get a normal sized laptop. I'd get it since I'm crammed full of research papers this semester -.- but MAN you'd need big baggy pants to fit that baby in a pocket.

The problem about the Sony is the battery which doesn't last longer. I had a Vaio laptop few years ago and had a problem with the battery after changing it 3 times but still the features is better and new they came up with a mini one which I have been looking for except they are putting the mouse in the middle of the keyboard just like the old ones.

Now everyone's on the mini-notebook band wagon. I think performance wise there's never going to be much difference as the hardware will be similar no matter who makes it (of course the more you pay the 'better' the hardware should be), they're all aimed for general PC tasks so no wonder whenever any1 throws anything intensive at them they complain that they're not good.
It's going to be a design thing and whatever extra a company can work into it to make it stand out. I'm sure I saw a shot of one sporting a PSP/PS3 style XMB menu for an instant on style interface - which almost makes them an advanced PSP thing ^_^.
Sony fans will 'lap' them up whilst any design wise peep will also take a look!

Actually, Vista runs very well on that kind of hardware. I own a MSI Wind netbook and Vista runs smooth on that 1.6ghz atom and 2gb ram pc. It runs better than XP, the boot is faster and the battery lasts longer. Moreover, on modern mid range & hi end computers (1-1.5yrs old) Vista is far superiori to XP in terms of speed and stability. I've never had a single crash/bsod/whatever since i'm using Vista. Oh yes, and i'm using Vista 64bit.
The design of the new Vaio is awesome but the hardware is the same of low-end netbooks... And 999€ starting price is just ludicrous.

Im not sure about walking around with the VAIO in your back pocket, but the size it quite reasonable for certain daily tasks.

SSD will definitely help the performance of this mini-me-laptop even with Vista installed. Is it me or is SSD the future of all Storage now?

^ Nah its just you, SSD's are still painfully expensive per size and write speed of most ssd's are slower if not slightly faster. Expect to pay a premium on top notch SSDs like intel's x-25m if you want a fast hard drive. Even with SSDs on a vista laptop, you still have a perfomance bottleneck from the Operating system itself so there is little gain in overall performance.

if I ever buy a laptop, it will be for the color instead of the functionality ^^; vaio is one of my favourite pink laptop so far.
But that one is really too small for laptop..too small not good :/

My family PC is a Sony Vaio and since we purchased it, we have had a few issues with it (e.g. - hard disk failure [twice], overheating, etc.) though some of these issues may have been the result of incompetency on behalf of the user rather than the actual machine. Then again, my friend owns a Vaio laptop and has also experienced hard disk failure.

I had a VAIO laptop and the mainboard broke twice. I then got a replacement Acer laptop which was much nicer&faster. But eventually the video circuit started to give problems. Now I own a MacBook from which I had the plastic replaced after a year.
The point: it doesn't really matter which brand. They all break eventually.
