7pm in Tokyo - New Years Day

Taken at 7pm-ish last night when out for an evening stroll exploring more parts of the neighborhood - came across an area which we had not come across before.
Apparently, a third of all Japanese live here and most travel back to their folks place in the sticks known as "Inaka" during the new year leaving Tokyo eerily quiet.
Photo is a bit grainy as I didn't have tripod and ISO was on a high setting - taken with the Lumix LX3.

That sounds like a thief's dream come true if it's outside of Japan. I mean, Home Alone movie was about a pair of thieves breaking into houses when people went on vacation. But I assume it's a lot less of breaking and entering happening?
It's still a good shot btw. I'm still trying to find a good camera similar to Lumix that can be bought here.

I'd love to see Tokyo so quiet. I've just been watching FatF: Tokyo Drift, just for the fact its set in Japan. I saw Shibuya twice, so I'm happy lol.

if this happened in new york everyone would go home missing a few things here and there

In the area I'm staying at, Minami Senjuu. There are like 5 buses full of police patrolling as soon as it gets dark. They've been doing this for over a week already. Not sure what they're doing though... But with that amount of police, it must be to control some mobs.

I was surprised when I saw that some stores were actually open New Years day. Matsuya and Mcdonalds but thats it. Very eerie seeing no one out there and every business boarded up.

Here in Canada I experience this sort of thing fairly often... have been walking home a few blocks from a friend's house at midnight or so and had it be very quiet. Last night on my way home from a new year's party (driving home) there was a coyote on the road - glad I was not walking as I would be very scared and it would probably be able to smell my fear.
But the emptiness is fairly common here. Interesting to see such a crowded place such as Tokyo so eerily empty.

Nice photo for no tripod. I've even noticed the lack of people on the streets today. Works nicely when I just finished my practice run driving stick just now.

Strange to see it so quiet. You see very few people when walking around Osaka late at night. However walk around a corner and suddenly you find a party.
Can you imagine what it was like before many people called Tokyo home. Must have been a complete ghost town in those times.

when it's a ghost town..... ITS TIME TO GO CRAZY~~!
i guess i would regard myself as 'living in the sticks', since i live within 30kms of the city centre. i love the quiet tranquility Aust/Syd has to offer. i don't think i'd survive in the city for very long - but maybe i'd somehow get used to it like most people do

Tokyo? Quiet? Is that the equivalent of seeing Time Square quiet? ^^; I do supposed its more peaceful and refreshing for something like this every now and then.

I live an hour away from Sydney, though if we had the Shinkansen I'd probably make it in under 40mins if not under 30. Not really the sticks here, what would you consider the sticks anyways? =o

nice picture, I bet it feels weird walking the streets and it being so empty there. I'm sort of used to walking around empty places though, usually everyone is gathered in certain areas getting drunk on a nightly basis in these woods -.-

Beautiful picture, you are good with that camera:)

It always seems as though whenever a photograph of Tokyo is taken--it's always something that is interesting.
When I look around my community, I see nothing but mud, filthy streets, and Ten Commandment yard signs--nothing to intrigue anyone.
Then again, it could that I see the same surroundings day in and day out and have become complacent with it or it could be that I'm a terrible photographer.
Regardless, very nice picture.

The sky looks so pretty... times like that that are amongst my favorite to be out and about. I'm totally a night person.
