7pm in Tokyo - New Years Day

Taken at 7pm-ish last night when out for an evening stroll exploring more parts of the neighborhood - came across an area which we had not come across before.
Apparently, a third of all Japanese live here and most travel back to their folks place in the sticks known as "Inaka" during the new year leaving Tokyo eerily quiet.

Photo is a bit grainy as I didn't have tripod and ISO was on a high setting - taken with the Lumix LX3.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

That sounds like a thief's dream come true if it's outside of Japan. I mean, Home Alone movie was about a pair of thieves breaking into houses when people went on vacation. But I assume it's a lot less of breaking and entering happening?

It's still a good shot btw. I'm still trying to find a good camera similar to Lumix that can be bought here.

In the area I'm staying at, Minami Senjuu. There are like 5 buses full of police patrolling as soon as it gets dark. They've been doing this for over a week already. Not sure what they're doing though... But with that amount of police, it must be to control some mobs.

Here in Canada I experience this sort of thing fairly often... have been walking home a few blocks from a friend's house at midnight or so and had it be very quiet. Last night on my way home from a new year's party (driving home) there was a coyote on the road - glad I was not walking as I would be very scared and it would probably be able to smell my fear.

But the emptiness is fairly common here. Interesting to see such a crowded place such as Tokyo so eerily empty.

Strange to see it so quiet. You see very few people when walking around Osaka late at night. However walk around a corner and suddenly you find a party.

Can you imagine what it was like before many people called Tokyo home. Must have been a complete ghost town in those times.

i guess i would regard myself as 'living in the sticks', since i live within 30kms of the city centre. i love the quiet tranquility Aust/Syd has to offer. i don't think i'd survive in the city for very long - but maybe i'd somehow get used to it like most people do

It always seems as though whenever a photograph of Tokyo is taken--it's always something that is interesting.

When I look around my community, I see nothing but mud, filthy streets, and Ten Commandment yard signs--nothing to intrigue anyone.

Then again, it could that I see the same surroundings day in and day out and have become complacent with it or it could be that I'm a terrible photographer.

    Regardless, very nice picture.
