Windows 7 Beta ISO Leaked

Looks like Windows 7 Beta ISO has leaked to the Internets. I do wonder if these OS "Leaks" are intentional though. I get the feeling that they are intentionally let loose on the Internets so that Apple or Microsoft can instantly get millions of QA testers for free.
Anybody going to bother with checking it out?

Don't worry about messing your machine up. Just install it on a secondary internal (or external eSATA) HD and play around with it while your current OS will remain untouched and in perfect working order.

Im considering trying it but part of me wants to also wait for the public beta release. Guess I'll see how I feel in the morning about it.
RAGING
PROTIP: There is not going to be a "public beta release". The only "release" of the beta 1 will be in early January to a few attendees to a Microsoft conference. This was when most people expected to get build 7000 (beta 1) and put it on the internet. Now people are just waiting until the conference for the 64 bit version.
So whether or not you choose to download it now or when the "public beta release" occurs makes no difference, YOU WILL STILL BE TRYING THE EXACT SAME VERSION OF WINDOWS 7. There's not going to be anything different; like it being "official" or something.

Same, I will only get it when its all finished and comes on a new laptop/pc.

Why would you want to wait for random 3rd party reviews? In mid January you'll be free to legally download it from Microsoft and try it (probably for 2-3 month). You can download it, install it on a second HD and try it for yourself rather then waiting for what others spoon-feed you.
Thats honestly the problem with Vista - its not that its bad, in reality its no worse then XP, but rather then spending a minute to see what all the noise is about, people instead listen to what their friend/neighbor heard someone somewhere say.

Well i think there are a lot of folks who have no deep interest in their OS or technology in general. People like that will take the word of a co-worker or friend to help them make a choice based the their own needs as a user.

I've heard good things about the beta so far. I'm surprised they would reveal this so soon while they still have many many XP users to convert to one of the many versions of Vista. I'll wait to hear how it fairs Vs Vista and then I'll make a choice. Of course by then I'll probably build myself a 100% Linux compatible Machine and leave Windows behind. This machine will still run XP though. I'll probably use it as a recording machine since the E-MU/Creative sound card drivers only really work in XP (and of course even here they suck - because Creative sucks).

Well, I shouldn't say for certain will wait until public release...once I get back to my desktop compy I may give it a spin in VMware. I do remember my Dad's old Pentium AT&T machine running Windows 3.1, and CompuServe dial-up internet...these are definitely better days.
Didn't get to comment on the desktop/laptop article either--my desktop compy is a triple-booting (Leopard/Vista x64/Ubuntu x64) Mac Pro beast of a machine, and it's more computing power than anyone would really ever need, so perfect for me. My laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet running Ubuntu, a nice sturdy little machine that is perfect for classes and school and a little coding while I'm away from my apartment and desktop compy. So, I don't even use Windows that much anyway except for games; but I may still give Win7 a spin at some point pre-release.

Customs & Weird Stuff
Disclosure: I am a vehement Vista Hater and nothing will change that.
I still run J-WinXP-SP3 and J-Win2K-SP4 for games and web and have ZERO
crashes or BSODs in the years that I've used them. So screw Vista.
Now, just tried the Win7 Beta build 7000 and I must say that it is finally
running semi-better than Vista did at this point in time. The system "felt"
a little more snappy. Memory usage was around 500-600MB(out of 2GB) after
a restart. UAC did not pop up once even for device manager (did not check
if it was running by default). Default driver support was better than Vista.
Win7 even automatically install drivers for my Realtek Gigabit LAN and ancient
sound card. (Although there was a glitch in the sound quality, at least it
installed).
I still hate the Eye-Candy Aero & the Ribbon UI,(damn you Office2007).
The over-hyped Taskbar is crap IMO. I know exactly how many and which windows
and programs I have running, I don't need a stupid preview to pop up(on mouse over)
on each program on the taskbar. It still feels like a dumbed down color UI for a
2 year old. What I really want is a true "Classic" windows theme, in that I can
disable all eye-candy and fluff so that I can make it look and feel like Win2K/XP
but with all the supposed benefits and security upgrades of Win7.
I will reserve judgment until the RTM is out, but so-far it is an improvement to Vista.
Metrosexual Narcissist
http://www.michaelflux.com
"The over-hyped Taskbar is crap IMO"
Keep in mind that you can turn it off and revert to the "regular" style. - In the taskbar settings, set it to display labers and not group, and change the icons to "small". And thats it, looks and functions exactly as Vista and every single version of Windows before it.
"What I really want is a true "Classic" windows theme, in that I can
disable all eye-candy and fluff so that I can make it look and feel like Win2K/XP"
Actually you can... Just open the theme settings and pick the classic style... Just as in Vista, just as in XP.
Also, as hard as it may be to believe, but Windows 7 (just as Vista) in reality, actually functions alot better with Aero turned on since that way the whole UI is being processed by the GPU while the CPU is barely if any touched at all. So in reality, with eye candy turned on, you're actually lifting some of the load from the CPU which otherwise would have to also handle the UI as it did in XP and all versions before it.
:)
Customs & Weird Stuff
Thanks for the tips.
Yeah, I selected the classic theme in the theme settings, but
some how it seemed "weird" for lack of a better phrase. I will
need to reinstall the beta and play with it out for a longer
duration on a separate system. I only did a belief test session
on my main rig before I reimaged back to XP.

Too bad you don't like the Office Ribbon. I found that after getting used to it that it was more convenient than the older versions of Office. Takes up more screen space, but a lot of the heavily used actions are presented so that it takes less clicks to get around. Ah well... =]

I'm using it right now to post this (with firefox of course) seems to run really good on my laptop (didn't even need to install drivers) no slow down at all uses way less resources. Uhm... I love Windows 98. I use XP, but I remove all the useless stuff until it is like Win98. For Vista I do the same, but remove the useless stuff requires much time. For Windows 7, I will do the same.

I think Win 7 is going to be very similar to Vista and I like Vista for the best tablet support yet. I still have a computer that runs Windows 3.1, a 80386SL laptop, 4 megs of ram, ~100md HD monochrome screen, and a 9600 baud modem.
These days are much better, and I don't really care about OS's until I have a hardware change, then map out your IRQ's and DMA's and hope there is no other problems. I'll upgrade my desktop "knock on wood" then I'll put x64 Vista on that thing and keep Vista on my tablet forever, making a time capsule like my Grandpa's Old 80386SL laptop.

Sticking to XP until they stop providing security updates for it. Don't see the point of upgrading unless you want the latest in technology or maybe the Aero theme? Also best to wait some time even after public release. Remember what happened with Vista. Retailers were almost shunning it because of all the bugs during the first release.

@ everyone who is doubtful about Win7
I'm a Mac user, been using Macs for years and years, before that used Windows since I first got a computer, and am using both Vista and OS X daily.
Now, with that said, I've now been using Windows 7 for a few month and I must say that I'm genuinely impressed with it. Now, sure it still has minor bugs here & there, but in general, considering that this is still only beta 1, this is extremely solid and can definitely be used as an everyday OS.
Will it make me switch back from OS X? Probably not - the reason I use OS X is simply because it feels more "polished" to me; text rendering is infinitely better, designers understood minimalism and elegance etc. Windows on the other hand just feels more thrown-together-from-random-parts-from-200-independent-teams.
anyways bla bla bla - while it won't make me switch back, it will definitely make using Windows ALOT more enjoyable.

I have heard of Window 7 past few months ago but never really go and check it out. I think they leak it so they can get million of free tester in the market. I also heard that it's a replacement for Vista since it's so crappy. User who change to Vista quickly reverted back to XP.
Metrosexual Narcissist

"...I also heard that..."
...and thats exactly the problem with Vista. Rather then people actually trying it and seeing what it is first hand, they listen to what others say they heard from someone somewhere quite possibly maybe so.
Honestly Vista is not that bad. It's certainly no worse then XP or any version of Windows before it. The biggest problem is that Microsoft completely f'ed up the launch of it by not being able to get manufacturers to update their drivers and even worse that they certified cheap, crappy, horribly underpowered systems as "Windows Vista Ready". But yeah, 99% of Vista's problems are just the perception that people have that "Vista is bad" while they never even saw it in person in most cases.

I have tried it, and I can vote as there's no option for that, isn't it?
So first off, my BG: I'm a newbie administrator (only been one for around 5 months) who works mostly on Linux, I use Windows Vista at home and have tried out Mac enough to judge that I don't like it. To sum it off, I prefer Windows as my everyday OS.
So about Windows 7 beta 1 there's a few points I wanna state:
- Bare installation size of Vista SP1 Ultimate (swap and hibernation files not included) is around 12GB, Windows 7 is around a little less than 7GB with fewer applications. These applictions IMHO will not result in 5GB different without improvement to reduce the size of the OS itself.
- The Vista Superbar (new Taskbar) is better than the old implement and Linux (Gnome or KDE alike), Mac OSX counterparts. Improved task thumbnails, grouping, Jump Lists for each tasks are very nice features. Some ppl don't like it though as I will post another person review at the end of this.
- Mouse actions to manipulate application windows are welcomed improvements.
Previous two mentioned improvement to the GUI are more prominent than Aero in IHMO. Aero looks good but is mostly useless. These are what I'd call true improvements.
- The OS feels snappier and smoother than Vista which (you might be shocked to hear this) at current state is faster than XP subjectively. I don't care about benchmark for everyday tasks as these are just nice numbers to look at; what important are how you feel working with the OS like: Is it fast? Is it comfortable to work with? Is it easy to get your favorite applications up and running?... Things like that.
- Stability: haven't encountered a crash as of now.
Other guy's review: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3223&tag=btxcsim , if you want benchmarks here u go with a little older build http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3187 and details bench http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3182

Forgot to mention in Windows 7, if an application hangs due to certain action, you might have a chance to undo that action and recover your application responsiveness. This is because there're some improvements to process management procedure in this Windows version.

...For a while, MacOS was going through new iterations almost every year. Don't kid yourself, 10 to 10.1 to 10.2 was a huge jump. You can't exactly equate them to service packs. After all, Apple expected you to pay for each upgrade.

I've been running Win7 on one of my machines since the pre-beta was released. For the record, I've also been running Vista full time since Beta2 (by full time, I mean all machines I used in production were running the beta code).
I'm not really sure about the "free tester" statement though. Microsoft has an extremely large test base without even going to the public. After all, there are 80,000 employees world wide. And yes, I happen to be one of them. Microsoft's greatest strength in the past couple of years has been the ability to run our software through it's paces before even going to a public beta. We "eat our own dogfood," so to speak and run everything in our own production environments. Most of the servers that run our infrastructure are running beta code in one way or another (e.g. Exchange, Win Server, SQL, etc.)
To those who think 7 will be the magic cure all for things that didn't work in Vista, you'll probably be very dissapointed. 7 is built on top of the Vista codebase so compatibility will be much the same. Many of the issues that cropped up with Vista came as a result of securing the OS. UAC not withstanding, there were a lot of gaps that were sealed since XPSP2 and that caused a lot of 3rd party apps to malfunction.
It's a difficult battle, really. Make the OS too secure and people complain because stuff doesn't work. Be too lax about security and people complain that there are too many vulnerabilities. Before anyone starts praising *NIX or MacOS for being secure, they really aren't. They're just a much smaller attack surface for malware writers. A great worm that targets MacOS won't really get that many people. A SQL injection attack, however, will. As does an RCE vulnerability in IE that allows hackers to steal passwords for porn sites.
