The last day of the year and a time to talk about what the best anime of 2008 was.
I'm still backlogged and still haven't finished Macross, Geass, Kemeko, Kannagi, Nodame and many more ^^;
But I did manage to keep up with Strike Witches and loved it. The animation and especially the background music was great.

As for the worst anime of 2008 - dont particulary remember any bad ones but do remember a load where I gave up after the first EP like Toradora and Hyakko.

          haha
same happened with me - 2 girls walking around campus for an entire episode didn't work well with me

i guess that's a problem with some slice-of-life adaptations, the 1st episode sucks if you didn't read the manga b4 hand

ie: Lucky Star - first 10mins was about food...

well i thought the same at first but after thinking about it, is pretty much a harem ending...The problem was that Junichi wasnt being honest with his feelings and he said it at the end but that doesnt mean Hime back off, therefore her return at the end. Overall i enjoyed it but I wasn't closely following it every week

I just finished the final episode after watching this the whole way through. It was generally sitting at a 7/8 out of 10 for most of the series, but after the last few episodes it ended on a 6.

Disappointing as this was a show that at the start I felt had real potential.

I definitely agree! ToraDora is one of the best anime to come out this fall season IMHO.

Some of the anime that I stopped watching is Kurogane no Linebarrel, Tales of the Abyss and To Arusu Majutsu no Index. Can't really say if they're the worst but it really got boring so I just dropped it.

Curious, as To Aru Majutsu no Index is my favourite series of the season, followed by Toradora and Kannagi. Then Clannad ~AS~.

What I consider interesting is that to me, all the 'good' series this time around needed a 'start up' span of two to three episodes until I started to enjoy them.

More specifically, Toradora, Hyakko and Index. Hyakko I actually wanted to drop right after the first episode, something I normally never do. Glad I didn't. I liked Toradora from the start, but it keeps getting better. And Index is just a sorta odd thing that kinda grows onto you. I first saw a few eps of the anime, then read the manga as far as it is released, and suddenly enjoyed the anime a lot more for some nonsensical reason. Because it's awesome, or something. I dunno.

Also, Strike Witches kinda had me torn. In one way, IMHO it was a -better- 'Sky Girls' to me. On the other hand I felt like I was watching it for pantsu fanservice. Lucchini pantsu fanservice, but nonetheless pantsu fanservice.

I usually tend to drop series that just shove pantsu into your face right away, because something irks me about series that do that. (Najica anyone?) This is also the reason why I loved Toradora from the first episode. Unfanservice-ey-ness. Or something.

If anything, I'd prolly applaud Strike Witches for somehow managing to do the pantsu fanservice 'tastefully' enough somehow that I could watch it without getting ticked off. I'm sure magic or satan was involved here.

Well, here in the States we are a bit behind, but I have to call Geass one of the best anime of the year, and that I've seen. Also have to add Gurren Lagan. Despite the (surprisingly light) editing by Sci-Fi, was still rocking. Still waiting for Macross Frontier. Hell Girl is still running, so it won't finish the first season here until after the new year. (Go IFC!) Death Note was good, so I guess you could slap that into the list. So many series left to see.

Wow, really? I thought Index was a good show :X There was only one episode I was really disappointed in because barely anything happened. Otherwise, it's just fine. If you say that Index is illogical, can't I say that Kannagi was illogical? Afterall, goddesses and espers existing in anime is about the same level.

Anyways, that was just a story issue. As for the actual, animation I'd say Index is one of the better ones in the bunch (Kannagi is up in the ranks too). Though I can't really tell which is actually THE best.

I was quite disappointed in Chaos;Head however, because it takes so long to understand what was going on in the anime itself. The only thing that made me stick to watching it was a tiny bit of previous knowledge of the story.

It's kinda hard to do a best of because I always forget about the stuff that came out in January ^^; So it's not that fair, but I'll list what I remember
    My favourites of 2008
    Itazura na Kiss
    Kemeko DX
    Macross Frontier
    Kannagi
    Toradora
And to defend Toradora and Hyakko... I kept going with Toradora because I saw potential. Hyakko I didn't see anything good with the first episode and it didn't go anywhere, but I gave it a chance and it redeemed itself within episodes 2 and 3.

I have a middle ground for my list which is for stuff that's somewhat good, but not the best:
    Hyakko
    Koihime Musou
    Tales of the Abyss
    Nogizaka Haruko no Himitsu

And one anime that I watched til the final episode and was very disappointed with was...
Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka -- Some episodes I just didn't even feel watching, but I was hoping for something good to come out of it because I liked the first episode. The whole series was so generic and mediocre that I wished I didn't see til the end. The ending was not to my liking either... It wasted the development that they've built up and ended anti-climatically. For me at least.

I really liked the show though, was a lot of fun, but I can also see why some people wouldn't like it.

Macross Frontier for me <3 Gundam 00's up there too, especially with all of the quality animation they've put out ;x lolol.

I want to catch up on a bunch of series that I put on hold such as the Tower of Druaga, Toshokan Sensou, and Casshern Sins.

    Hmm, tbh it's a bit hard for me to remember the spring season haha... i'm geting old ain't i? ><;;

As for ToraDora and Hyakko... can't agree with you there, they might start a bit slow but both are lovely in their own way. Hyakko didn't really chain me down, but i certainly enjoyed it.

    I enjoyed Junjou Romantica (S1/S2) a lot, but i doubt that it's content is anything for the broad audience here haha. ^^;

    As for the rest...
It's hard to pick a best for me since many animes had their own feats and i enjoyed them due those.
Casshern for it's oldschool style, combined with interesting music and an advanced story.
Skip Beat just for the laughs... i love it when girls get the rage on boys haha.
Kuroshitsuji just because Sebastian is a cool pet to have.
Soul Eater for the laughs and story.
ToraDora for it's cuteness and romance.
Code Geass ... for the suspense it managed to give me. ;)
EF-A Tale of Memories/Melodies ... just because i like it complex.
H2O was certainly a nice lovestory as well.
Hayate no Gotoku shouldn't be forgotten either.
Kanokon... well... it was cute, i have to admit that, suger loads - despite the fanservice.
Shakugan no Shana - alltogether just gimme more.
Shigofumi - just for being different.
True Tears - dunno, i was moved by it...
Zetsubou Sensei and his clique which did roll over my screen and gave my many tears of laugther.

If i missed something, then it wasn't prolly worth to be mentioned in the first place. ;)
    But i'm only human so...

I dropped Kemeko DX after ep 5. I just found it to be so uninteresting. Toradora became one of my favorites. Hyakko isn't that bad...when it doesn't spend a lot of time on secondary characters. When it spends any length of time away from the main characters, then it dives into Kemeko territory.

Code Geass has to be my best and favorite anime of 2008! Honestly, I've never seen an anime with such a crazy and surprising plot. So many episodes left me in total awe. Also, so far, Toradora and Tytania get each a place in my favorites. As for the worst, Kurozuka was a total mess up, it looked great after 2 episodes, but the last part became completely confusing and the finale was just cr**.

Some Anime that i'm in the middle of watching will not be listed on either list but so far it's looking good:

    1. Clannad Afterstory
    2. Toradora
    3. Kannagi
    4. Blade Of The Immortal

Best Anime i've seened in 2008:

    1. Nogizaka Haruka No Himitsu
    2. Strike Witches
    3. To Heart 2 AD OAV

    Worst Anime for 2008:
    1. Macademi Wasshoi

    UNDECIDED list:
    1. Zero No Tsukaima Princess No Rondo (Season 1 & 2 were just better than season 3)

Zero No Tsukaima Princess No Rondo was just plain. It wasn't great and it wasn't bad either. I guess what made me watch it was the whole Tabitha arc, where she was kidnapped and saved by Saito, and i'm guessing Tabitha developed feelings for Saito as well. The ending, episode 12, did not leave me with the same sensation i got from watching the last episode of season 1 & 2.

The Lucky Star OAV was no different from the TV series from the prior year. What made it so great was the Moe and of course the whole Kagami/Miku Hatsune crossover.

A lot of people including me felt that it was too long and the last 10 minutes were boring.

My best watched anime in 2008, literally ('cause, the 2008 Anime season would not end until March 2009):
    -Macross Frontier
    -Gundam 00
    -CLANNAD After Story
    -Kannagi
    -Toradora!
-Hyakko (started slow, but it gets better later on)
-Casshern SINS (a classic reinvetion with a twist)
-Mnemosyne (a bit short, but still kicks ass!)
    -Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
    -ChäoS;HEAd
    -Blassreiter

For the worst anime of 2008, just Penguin Musume Heart ('cause it needs a new season!)

Okay, I'm too jaded, as I did not have a "MUST SEE" anime of 2008
but here goes my list of interesting anime for 2008.

    Good:
    Strike Witches (Lucchini!!)
    Kannagi
    ToraDora
Nogizaka Haruka No Himitsu (Say what you will, I loved it)

    So-So:
Code Geass R2 (Liked it a lot but did not love it)
    GundamOO (it is ok)
Macademi_WAsshoi (Chessy, cliche, but a guilty pleasure of mine)
    Kanokan (Another guilty pleasure)

    Worst:
    Rosario ('Nuff said)
    Kemeko (Dropped after 2 episodes)
To Aru Majutsu no Index (WTF is up with the pacing??!!)
    Line Barrels of Iron (Wannbe.)
    Soul Eater (Again pacing/direction?!!)
Zero No Tsukaima (Could have been much better.)
Slayers Revolution (Get the story moving already!)
Macross Frontier (Gag me, the only thing I liked was the DYRL insert songs)
    Sekirei (WTF were they thinking?)

Can't really name the best or the worst since I didn't see that many series, but I'll list the ones that I enjoyed and the ones that weren't as enjoyable.

The ones I enjoyed were Gundam 00, Clannad After Story, Kannagi, and Toradora.

Zero no Tsukaima 3 was a bit disappointing. The fanservice kind of eliminated the story somewhat.

Those were the ones that aired this year.

As for older ones that I saw this year, I thoroughly enjoyed the Aria series, Fate/Stay Night, and Minami-ke.

Toradora was one of the ones I really liked this year. I can't say what's in my top because I can't really remember what played. But I do remember I absolutely hated Minami-Ke Okawari because they somehow turned a comedy manga into a not funny anime. The fact that those same people are making Okaeri is really off putting.

Defense for Hyakko> I agree, there are boring moments. But there are great moments in Hyakko that made me glad that I kept on watching.

IMO: 2-3 episodes should be how much time you should commit initially to like or dislike anime (in recent cases, Hyakko took me three episodes for keeps, Toradora took two for get rid of). Extreme cases like
-Soul Eater, 5-6 episodes, before I decided that I like the manga more
-Linebarrel, 1st episode was great, 3rd episode made me drop it completely
-CG R2, watched it b/c it was the continuation of the first season, REGRETTED watching it around episode 20
-Macross F, watched it b/c of the awesome insert music, holy cow first episode (deculture ver.), and valkyries, ashamed of it by last episode

    So all in all...
    2008 top 3)
1.) Lucky Star OVA (Seriously, I was already happy about the thought that Kyo-Ani was releasing an OVA. It's another to say that it's completely original (from the manga), and it had great moments, made it definitely something I was glad I watched).
2.) Kyouran Kazoku Nikki (Very stupid, very random, very funny).
3.) Gundam 00 (it's about time we got a good Gundam series to forget about SEED)

    2008 worst 3)
1.) Code Geass R2 (it really did not live up to Season 1)
2.) Minami-ke Okawari (I really don't know why I watched it... probably b/c I watched the first season and wanted closure. I didn't get it).
3.) School Rumble (I mean, it's an OVA, but it really did not deliver or pick up from where it left off of.... Already, it was flimsy -funny moments and stupid moments not even worth air time-, and with the edition of this, it was a major let down).

2008 top 3, I was GLAD to find)
1.) Ga Rei > without the anime, I would have never found the manga -the manga is seriously great, once you finish Zero, although, there is a little wtf moments.
2.) Hyakko > manga is definitely hilarious
3.) Kemeko DX > in the same sense of Kyouran, except Kyouran is not a manga, but a novel (or so I hear)

    2008 top 3, let down)
1.) Macross F > high expectations, bad ending (too cheery, and too conveniently closed together)
2.) Nodame Paris > TOO SHORT!!!! NOT MUCH MUSIC!!! FEEL VERY CHEATED!!!
3.) Slayers Revolution > really, this is because I have no previous background in Slayers...
(note, I can essentially put CG R2 in this list, but I'll keep it to one category)

Stuff that did not make it to the list:
    Toshokan Sensou
    Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
ARIA the Origination (just b/c I thought the manga had better end stories)
    Xamdou (not finished)

What shall this "GONZOOOOOO!!!!" mean?!? i liked The Tower of Druaga a lot and watched it twice this year. And it was officially on Youtube, so my first series i could watch directly when it came out.
What i did not like that much was Blassreiter eventhough i watched it the entire series (yeah some episodes where pretty good and Amanda was in it^^)

Best anime of 2008 for me were:

    Code Geass R2
    Gundam 00
    Macross Frontier
    Real Drive
    Blassreiter
    Kannagi
    Kurozuka
    Kuroshitsuji

    Detroit Metal City

most likely there are a few others but can't recall them.

As for worst, I can't really remember any, tho I know I dropped so many series after watching the first episode, orz.

Many people dropped Toradora assuming it was just another cliched tsundere-abusing-a-spineless-guy show.

Fortunately, it turned out to not be that at all. That was a feint that led to a much richer show.

    The Year of 2008 (Anime)

2008 started off with awesome anime like:
spice and wolf (no one has said this yet WHY)
    Shigofumi
    Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
    True Tears

    with disappointing shows:
    H2O: Footprints in the Sand
    Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino
    Minami-ke Okawari

by the time the next season was about to start everyone was hooked watching a cat named chi

    and shows like

    Kurenai
    xxxHOLiC: Kei
    Toshokan Sensou
    Kaiba
    Nijuu-Mensou no Musume

    diappointing:

    Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
    Wagaya no Oinari-sama
    Da Capo II Second Season

oh yea Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch R2 came out but not my thing

out of no where a web show called Candy Boy started (i like it)

by the middle of the year another Ikkitousen series was about to air (how do those ecchi fans keep this show going)

As the summer season started we were lucky to see shows like:

    Hidamari Sketch x 365
    Yakushiji Ryoko no Kaiki Jikenbo
    Natsume Yuujinchou
    Bounen no Xamdou

    disappointing:
    Slayers Revolution
    Strike Witches (2008)
Zero no Tsukaima: Princess no Rondo

August started and we got to see 2 of the best 15 min shows around

    Detroit Metal City
    Eve no Jikan

by the end of Sept we got more of our lucky star fix with the lucky star ova

and finally the fall season of anime gave us

    Clannad After Story
    Kannagi
    Toradora
    Hyakko
    To Aru Majutsu no Index
ef - a tale of melodies
    Skip Beat

    disappointing:
    Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka
    Chaos;Head
    Kurozuka
Kyou no Go no Ni TV
    Shikabane Hime: Aka
    Rosario to Vampire Capu2

on the 29.12.08 Maikaze Touhou Anime Project ep 1 was released

wow what a great way to end 2008

so whats the best of 2008 Detroit Metal City
worst of 08 Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino

2009 maybe the year of the squeal

with more Minami-ke, Natsume Yuujinchou, everyone fav boxer ippo, another series of slayers and maybe ed and al find their mother.

    Code Geass R2

    Toradora
and the Tsubasa Chronicle and Lucky Star OVAs were quite awesome as well.

Worst... are shows that tried to wrap lots of fanservice (action or ecchi) in plot. Certainly there are ways to make it work, but more often than not the sacrifice of cinematography (low angle shots) or flashy fights (animation budget) leave plot looking like watered down gruel where the gruel is a speck of rice in some forsaken lake--like a pathetic burned ribbon of bacon tied around some fetid morsel. Or when a studio tried to take a joke-oriented series and force it to run on a half-assed contiguous plot. It's prolly easier to name studios than anime for this one.

It's disappointing how few people have mentioned the fantastic show that is CASSHERN SINS. Great atmosphere, great soundtrack, great and intriguing story, and great art too.

I also enjoyed Macross Frontier, although the story was pretty much all over the place.

Also fantastic is MICHIKO TO HATCHIN! Too bad this one is hard to find, as it has the best art in anime anime in years, and has a nice unique storyline too. Also worth mentioning, Jigoku Shoujou, Mouryou no Hako, and the new Golgo 13 TV series.

Dropped several series too, like "To Love RU" (prefer the manga a lot more), "Kanokon",...

I, like Danny, gave up on ToraDora after the first episode. I'm not quite sure why... might be a combo of how I didn't like the style the guys were drawn in, and that it didn't speak to me... I won't deny she's cute though.

Favourite series for me... Strike Witches, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, Kannagi, Clannad AS, Kara no Kyoukai, H20 Footprints in the Sand(Technically stretched into this year too lol) Denno Coil(wasn't this year I don't think, but I loved it all the same) and Kurenai. I'm sure there are more. But there are most of my favourites. All good, very good anime.

As for stuff I've dropped.... Sekirei...Polyphonica(not released this year lol)...Skip Beat.....loads more... but I never pick up series I don't think theres even a little chance I'll like it. Most of the time I'm lucky.

a guy who cares (sort of...)

The best example that some things should stay as OAV's not TV series - Kyou no Go no Ni - OAV version was 1000 times better. Rosario to Vampire Capu2- the worst case of pantsu censoring ever >< !! Nodame Cantabile Paris Hen - complete and utter failure in the most important part of this show - MUSIC !!! Clannad After Story - I don't know why but after 1st season I expected a lot more from this one. Mission E - no, just no, seriously NO! Kamen no Maid guy - chichi onna without chichi full shown in ALL eps? GTFO !

For good parts - One Outs, a mix of Akagi/Kaiji and Major, great show! Itazura no Kiss - not great but solid show and fun to watch. Kurenai - for angry loli ^_^. And the Best Anime of 2008 - DMC - I laughed till my eyes watered and stomach got cramps ^^.

I enjoyed it for sure, and it did look and sound nice, but you have to admit, the story was completely random and made no sense at all. So best anime of the year? I think you need to watch more anime!

Go and watch some Michiko to Hatchin or Casshern Sins for example. Two superb shows with much better stories than Macross.

    Favorites from 2008:

Macross Frontier - I'm totally biased on this and have my blinders on for whatever misgivings the show may have. The original series is what got me hooked on anime to begin with. awesome OST's

Ga-Rei Zero - First and second episodes made me wonder wtf was going on, glad I stuck till the 3rd episode.

Kara no Kyoukai - just go see it.

    Toradora - Minori ftw!

True Tears - short and sweet.

Kaiba - very very underrated IMO.

    Entertaining enough to follow:

Hyakko - can't quite put my finger on why I like this show.

Geass R2 - it really sputtered towards the end.

Kannagi - I stuck through the whole series... but the last episodes felt lacking to me.

    Couldn't quite get into:

Clannad - there's always one show that everyone raves about yet I find boring (puts flame suit on)

ef a tale of melodies - only because "memories" was so good... might have set the bar a bit too high.

Nodame - Only because the dorama was so much better.

Honestly, there hasn't been any decent anime for me in '08, with the exception of Gundam 00... Clannad is the only series I couldn't get into. 2009 will be much better with the new FMA.
