Animage

The most recent edition of Animage that I bought and definitely the last.

Usually get Newtype but thought I'd give Animage a try to see what its like. Don't think I've ever had the pleasure of picking up such a load of bollocks. It's got a few bits n pieces on the latest anime but the rest of it seems to be filled with nothing. At least this edition came with a cute Shana pencil board though.

I remember when I was back in the UK, I would go to the Japan Center in Piccadilly to pick up Newtype - cost me about 3 times the original cost.

Are there a wide choice of Japanese mags available in your region? If there are - then avoid Animage.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Anime category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

    Thnx for the warning Danny.
But most of the Japanese Mags here are gundam related. Since they are imports, I probably out never spend 20 CND on one

You'd be hard pressed to find Newtype magazine around here if you didn't know where to look. However you can find some back issues if you look really really hard. The only thing abundant that is japanese here are sushi restuarants.

Anime magazines are way too expensive to be worth getting here in Australia, and Newtype USA was basically just an expensive catalogue of recently licensed anime in the US and completely irrelevant to the local scene. It was also filled with tidbits of info I already heard about ages ago. Blogs have made "scene" magazines obsolete. Magazines have to offer me high quality delicious images to earn my patronage.

Also, if you don't want the magazine, can I have that Ink-chan foldout? :D

The same could be said for Newtype USA here in the states. I was a subscriber and it's not cheap $100.00+ USD for 12 months. You find out in the sixth month that they are rehashing all the same stories and information they did the first 6 months with a sprinkling of new statistics about sales charts that month. I really think they should goto a bimonthly publishing or just make the movie to digital publishing! Like Dannychoo.com!

Sorry to hear you found out the hard way, Animage is not a great magazine. I will usually think about buying it if I see something I want like the Shana pencil board. Then again, I don't offten see the Animage at the local Japanese bookstore. Sometimes at one of the Japanese grocery stores will have it.

For the most part the local Japanese bookstore caries the hobby magazines and Newtype. Occasionally I will see a figure magazine or Gundam Ace. Lots of woman's magazines though, but it makes for good business since the men are usually only in the shop on Friday evenings doing tachiyomi.

Prices are not too high. I can't believe I use to pay $14USD or more for Newtype...

Newtype USA is absolute crap! They have no real current news and dwell on the same series issue after issue! I had a two year subscription to it which I cancelled after the first 14 months because I would either get the magazine 2 to 3 weeks after it hit the newstands or ( and this was the major problem ) I wouldn't get it at all! After multiple complaints they finally contacted me and said they would refund the remaining amount for my subscription. That was 2 years ago! Never got a check and each person I talked to had a different reason why it hadn't been sent! I finally gave up! I try to warn as many people as possible about how bad their customer service is!
Previous to this I had a subscription to the Japanese Newtype, for four years, which I loved! I never had any problems with them! This is what happens when you "Americanize" something! Look how bad our Power Ranger toys are!

It's a great store that sells just about everything you can think of. The second floor is where you'll find all the Manga, Anime Mags, Artbooks, etc.

The first floor sells American books, Japanese and American DVDs(Anime!), Music, and an entire wall of different types of Magazines. You may find some of the mags you're looking for hidden there as well. Anyway, most of the stuff in this shop is used, so you'll find a lot of great deals.

Recently, I found American Zeta Gundam DVD's for about 10 dollars a pop. That's ten bucks for ten eps! :)

    Happy hunting

Suprisingly, yes. They are all translated into English though. I need to get a subscription to Newtype but thanks Danny, I will avoid this one.

In the plain Jane state of Oklahoma, we carry Anime magazines. Cool thing is, some come with DVDs. How cool is that?

I get my Hobby mag fix at Sunshine Plaza, it's a cool place which has many hobby and figurine related stores, it's a little out of the way, but good prices though, much cheaper than Comics Connection and faster too...

I live close to Little Tokyo so that's already a given, but the closet place to get anime magazines for me is actually in Chinatown if you know where to look...

Japanese magazines are extremely hard to get here. So far I haven't come by a store that sells them and if they would, they would probably sell it for 5 times the original price. =_=

Over here in UK, we get NEO magazine that is not really all that great. I only have one Neo mag (I think its the second issue). Its nothing compared to Japanese mags such as NewType or Hobby mag etc.

I'm siding with Subaruhess, UK does not have much magazines of anime..manga ect.
We'll have to import it from HLJ.com or find a shop in London which will be 3-4 times the original price.

I personally like Animage, but I agree it is barebones and it is basically pretty straightforward and not as overtly extravagant (and as expensive) as Newtype or have the moe overload of Dengeki.

The Dublin branch of Forbidden Planet used to carry the japanese Newtype, but nowadays they're happy just providing the American one, which I've never bothered much with. I think they carry some others, like that Newtype mag that is devoted to live action shows...

I know the store you're talking about, in Piccadilly circus! I've been there lots of times. Last time was three years ago, I bought an issue of Shounen Ace which had an Evangelion calendar.

Takes me about 1-2hours to get to the closest place that sells Japanese magazines (and they're like a few dollars overprices, compared to the original retail price).
