So what on earth does this all mean then?...

Remember the news last week about the Japanese Ministry of Defense developing a Gundam? Well this chap is wearing it!
I nearly choked on my cereal laughing when I read this at Gunota.

This is what the Japanese ministry of defense revealed as the weapon that the otaku community thought was going to be some form of mobile suit.
The "Gundam system" consists of a bullet proof vest, a helmet with built in GPS and physical status monitor telling you "you have been shot in the buttocks" or "you have been stabbed and are about to die" and sometimes "your little bro has been severed. you wa shock."
This project was called "Gundam" only because the developers named it that.

So now you know what type of cool weapons you'll be playing with if you join the Japanese defense forces. What are defense forces/army like in your region? I remember watching a load of "join the US army and pilot a stealth" type commercials when I was in the US for a while.

BTW, images of Destiny in the Galleries.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

@Evo_Spec japan does have an army it is called the JSDF (japanes self defense force) and is not refered to as japanese armed forces it is under full civilian control they do have some restrictions for some weapon systems such as long range surface to surface missiles

@Insectice youre talking about the metal storm system that system can only be used for for anti aircraft missions and as an CIWS i heard that this system will be adapted for handguns and assault rifles but its too expensive

It seems that Japan is planning to do a Soldier Modernization Program (SMP) for their infantrymen with emphasis on urban combat, possibly emulating America's Future Force Warrior program. For urban scenarios, the gear he's wearing do seem suitable, but will probably hamper his movement a lot. Giving soldiers more protection is a double trade-off: while this increases their chances of survival from getting shot, it will also reduce their mobility and make them burn more stamina. Also, Japan should consider making a carbine SOPMOD version of their Type 89 assault rifle. Based on the picture, the Type 89 doesn't look like a suitable assault rifle for CQB. Overall, I see nothing new here as everything they did has been done before by SMPs from other countries.

If you ask me, it's unnecessary for a self-defense army to spend billions of dollars on a SMP, as these programs are often just testbed in researching future military technology, and most likely only few will actually be adopted and taken into military service. Take America's Land Warrior program for example: after billions of dollars were spent, only the Interceptor vest was taken into service, not the cameras mounted on rifles, not the helmet mounted cameras for the commander's observation, not the fancy GPS tracking system to avoid friendly fire, and the OICW was simply cancelled, as with the H&K XM8 assault rifle that were supposed to replace the M16/M4 rifle family. Increased of cost per infantrymen (imagine a soldier with a pricetag of an upgraded Humvee) is probably the reason.

As for my country's military, their current equipment is just adequate and none too fancy, perfect for a self-defense army. One thorny problem that is facing my country's military is maintenance: it's depressing to see my country procuring new equipments but forgetting the purchase of spare parts. Thankfully, my country's special forces are quite top notch thanks to training assistance and joint training exercises with other special forces groups from the US and UK.

This is obviously not the Gundam people asked for, but it's not bad at all. I feel they should have more equipment (Got to protect his neck!) and high-tech gadgets.

People, think that they haven't mastered bipedal robots yet (even if they look fairly advanced now -Except for the Asimo incident-).
    And for costs...

So if the Japanese plan for getting more prepared for world conflicts, I am not sure world peace would come anytime soon.

Imagine that if Bandai is already producing those High, Master & Perfect grade Gundam model kits, that means they already have a rough blueprint of the real thing. Now all they need is to build it on a 1:1 scale, add a generator to power up and install a decent OS to run it.

Ok am I being over optimistic? I seriously wanna see the real thing! LOL

It looks uncomfortable as all hell, and I've worn stuff like that.

Starting with the helmet, all that crap on it makes it look like it's heavier than it needs to be. And probably ill-balanced to boot. I don't know about you, but I don't need a monitor telling me if I've been hurt or not. Usually I can figure it out on my own. The chinstrap doesn't look particularly comfortable, either.

Knee and elbow pads are the bane of my existence.

The body armor looks kinda interesting, though. A combination vest/shorts thing, it looks like. Probably heavy, probably moderately practical.

They'll probably do a limited issue wear-test and then decide the whole thing sucks. What looks good on paper and what works in the field aren't always the same thing.

Apart from a mission in Haiti and from being used to help the police in cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, I don't really know how it works.
But enlisting is obligatory at age 18 for men, though you only get in if you really want to (at least here where I live).

well, I can't say much about military in USA as I only been here for 7 years. In Belarus military is very poor and only excitement they get is when they get to do some exercise. The only time I saw military armors was during military parade celebrating end of WW2. I did read about the new F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II those are some nice fighter planes.

    Is that an M16 he's holding? O_o

Why would they give them that and not an MP5? Just seems that if you're going to wear as much body armor as the Bomb Squad you might want to have a gun you can actually move with

I remember seeing something on America's Land Warrior battle armour being developed:

    technology/military_law/4215715.html)

Although it has been having some issues, complaints about it being too heavy, etc. Although its cool with the heads up display mounted over your eye so you can see where your buddies are, as well as the camera so you can see around corners using infared, nightvision, etc.

The US army's future warrior system is much better looking. That picture look more like it some one who are going to play air guns or paintball.

Try playing or looking at the soldiers from the game, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advance War Fighter (GRAW). The soldiers' armor and computer based HUD/communication technology is almost as real as the real thing developing by the Pentagon.

The only problem is the size of the computer.

If any country is going to make big Mech, it would be Japan. You guys do have the best computing technology. 8 PS3 = 1 super computer. But the only problem is how the Mech will move, since it so heavy.

The us have developed a similar system called lan warrior. Pretty similar but without the thingy saying you got shot. Go to youtube and search up lan warrior. It only add up 10 lbs to a soldiers gear. Only if they had metal gear solid, snakes's suit =). I can believe Japan isn't building there super robot army.

Man, this really is an anti-climax moment. I really thought the Japanese military would develop something really awesome, but this is just...XD

Though it's still better than our military, the Dutch Army isn't half as technologically developped as the US Army. But then again, why spend a sh*t load of money on defense if it can be spend on better things (like social facilities, education, etc.)?

we can stand cause we have brain nerve to leg, or any part of the body.

this is the most vital development to huge machine such as gundam, they need electronical nerve system, to move and else.

The 'gundam' army that you've shown to us might takes expensive production because all equipments they hold might cost too expensive since all are at high technology. but seems the mobility must be considered because an army must have an ideal of it and as flexible as they can move...

Japan isn't allowed to have an army, and whoever thinks japan would be the 1st is absolutely retarded considering the United States spends more money on military advanced technology then any country in the world. Infact we already developed a T-64 Bogatyr Mech made out of pure titanium, and it doesnt look like crap either. It's design is rather intimidating, it uses Hydrogen lasers that can blow holes through a tank with ease, and it used powerful machine guns. It also launches patriot missiles that are able to detech nuclear missiles. The USA has the most advanced military in the world. Were the only ones who even developed the Kohran 57T Laser that shoots from a sattelite to anywhere on earth. Also the Rail gun, and even jets that can even cloak. You may think it's science-fiction but these things are real. There is smart people out there. If we can build a space station we can sure as hell build a Mech, and of course everyone knows lasers exist.

Also the United States has already developed a full body suit that has molecules within it that enhance the soldiers strength 10x greater then normal and endurance and dexterity. It can also withstand grenade blasts and resist bullets even from the heaviest machine guns. It also has active cloaking too using metamaterial and a series of mirrors that reflect the surrounding areas making it seem like your apart of that area and not there. Lol you think japan is developing crazy stuff, try seeing what the United States has it will blow your mind away, everything you thought was science-fiction has turned to reality within the United States Department of Defense.

I'll say this from personal experience as i served 2 years in the army. No matter how much technology you have it all comes down to this:

1: The rifle. A good mid-range assault rifle made even back in 1980 will proove most effective. eg: m16/ak-47/g3
2: the protection. Wearing armor limits your movement. Slower= less likely to dodge a suprise attack. A basic gear kit for isolated combat will weight about 10-15kg. Add survival kit + 25g add armor kit + 8-10kg? = Good luck Chuck ;)

If you join to wear that thing or simular stuff, you might aswell go join Suicide Bombing Organization ;)

Here I was hoping it would atleast be a mechanised hydralic lift assist suit equiped with a drum fed, water cooled 50cal machine gun. Instead its some guy wearing a flakk vest and a helmet with a HUD unit screwed on. Just perfect, atleast we know Japan's not so serious abotu ever getting its military back to teh way it was....
