Japanese Mobile Games

If you can put up with the size of Japanese mobiles then you may be in for a treat.

The games of late on mobiles are quite stunning - the screenshots look good but you will get a true feel of how good the graphics are from the video below.
I've never had any luck with mobile games. First I was with the NTT Docomo carrier which had crap games and phone designs. I changed to AU but quality of the designs and games hasn't advanced for the past two years. And now these NTT phones come out with graphic abilities to rival current portable game systems.

What are mobile games like i your region? Do you find the time to play games on your mobile?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

    Hey danny...
Japanese phones are honestly not that bad in terms of size etc...

I just moved out to the UK (so like... opposite of you >_> Japanese -> UK...) for Uni... and like... honestly, the phones here are pretty sh*t compared to the ones back home...

Japan is the best place to get phones... well, good ones anyway.

easily said, unless you have an iPhone, which honestly, you shouldn't be watching movies on that screen anyway, just carry a DS or a PSP. and even with the PSP, you shouldn't be watching or listening to music on those...

I kinda agree with Danny on the cellphone sizes... I once had a HUGE phone (not to mention how shitty it was), a Nokia 7710.
Now I exchanged it for a Sony Ericsson W810i. And it was the best thing I ever made.

I just can't get bigger cellphones after having such a small little functional phone like the W810i. 2Mpx cam just retired my 5Mpx Canon digicam, and the mp3 capabilities are a blast.

Not without setbacks though. The screen is kinda small, and I can only play crappy worse-than-flash games on it. But I don't mind. I don't use the cellphone to play games anyways (have a DS).

For movies and other stuff, my Archos 604 is just enough. And for stuff that requires more *OOOMPH*, I recently decided to completely replace desktop for laptop at home...

Back on the subject, I seen some smaller japanese cellphones though. But I guess it was a basic phone. It'd be kinda hard to stuff a cellphone with 1seg tuner, near PSP 3D graphics chip and other incredible stuff like that in a smallish cellphone anyways.

Also, there's also this: One of the main reasons I use a small cellphone here is for concealment. Fear of being robbed. Something I wouldn't have to worry in Japan...

I have a Motorola RAZR VT which is nice when you want something slim. I don't really use my phone other than as a phone lol. I have games and music on it but its only played to pass the time. My games are java based and are usually 2D, still can't beat tetris as a way to waste time. Though I wouldn't mind playing gundam on it lol.

While it's true the chance of mobile gaming is bigger than portables, but one of the main reasons handheld games still more successful than mobile games is due the controls.

No matter how powerful a mobile phone, if it have crap controls for games, nobody would like to play with it.

Nokia tries with nGage before, it still fails because almost nobody make games for the platform. Now they're trying to do that again... we'll see how it goes :P

Games look great. I haven't played hand held games for more than 3 years. Although, I think it's going to be a pain having the screen to the left and having to press buttons on the right. Furthermore, I only have a phone for communication purposes.

imo, mobile phone games here are total crap. it's not the worth of the price of downloading it ><

maybe that would change if Nokia brings their N-Gage service here but i doubt that would come and i hope that service would have at least decent games

if you following japanese mobile phone changes u will know in docomo mobile line up, P90*i series usually have maximum capability on its mobile line up series, even usually P-series not number 1 user favorite choice but it have its own fans (like me)

the current phone i use P904i didnt have TV capability (1seg) but seems P905i going have it with its viera display and more impressive with those gaming capability and 2 way flip, i will get this phone as it hit on the market!

Sadly, I recently switched over to a Windows Mobile based phone, so I don't have any games provided by my carrier :( Though when I had a phone with such capibilities, I found that they were very lackluster, and fairly over-priced.

I enjoy having a tad more freedom of what applications I can run (I.E. a NES emulator, Fire Emblem on the go is just so rad!) That Gundam game looks pretty sweet, and so does the Char Phone! Does it support Simcards? (Not that it would matter for me, I'm stuck with Verizon :( )

Great stuff, I remember playing some great looking 3D racer last year in a DeCoMo shop. I finally got my first mobile phone (USA, Sprint), and the game choices are lukewarm. They're simple Java games that are basically ports of older arcade/puzzle games. They're not bad games per se, but they're not awe-inspiring.

I play my portable games pretty often, especially since I didn't have a TV while I was in college. I still can't see myself playing mobile phone games with controls like that, but it's definitely impressive tech!

That ridge racer game looks amazing! Don't think too highly of the control method tho. It must be hard to play games when the controls are on the right of the screen.

Although mobile phones in Europe have great designs, their games suck big time. However, you can download some better games on your mobile, but that usually subscribes you to very annoying services that cost a load of money as well afterwards. These services will keep sending ringtones and/or games you didn't ask for every week and they charge you for every ringtone and/or game.
