Japanese Trains

The first train is at 5.03 going towards Meguro and the last train is at 00.33 (also towards Meguro). Most trains stop running at 00.30.
But what happens when you are out n about late at night and need to go home after the last train has gone?
Well you can take a Taxi and pay up to 3 times the normal fare - most Taxis double or triple the fare at night time to take advantage of lost souls stranded in the middle of Tokyo.
I know that many people sleep over at work too - we had quite a few when I was back at Amazon.
When I was in the UK, we had night buses which would run all night. If you were lucky and the driver wasn't in a rush to go home, he would stop to let you on. I have experienced countless number of times where the driver zooms right by even when people have hailed the bus to stop.
What is it like in your region? How do people get home after the public transport ends their service? Are there services that run all night?
BTW, Spent the whole evening with Good Smile (which is why I'm late with posts) and took the last train home which I haven't done for a while. The last train is usually can-O-sardines and stinks of alcohol.
