Live in Japan for a while and you'll start to notice the emphasis on cosmetic surgery - on the TV, magazines and ads like this one at Shibuya station.

So what are the types of surgery that people get done? Most of if seems to be facial although many do their oppai. "Oppai" [おっぱい] is the new word today which I don't think I've covered before - boobies.

Above: The operation to make the eyes stand out more takes 5 to 15 mins and involves a few cuts n stitches to the eyelid. Can cost anywhere from 52,500 yen to 210,000 yen.
Above: Before and after pics of somebody who's had their oppai done - costs anywhere from 31,500 yen to 2,100,000 yen. Full price list at Jujin Hospital.

I personally dont feel the need to change anything about my appearance although simple surgery can change peoples lives - its true because it was on TV ^^;

Below is a show called Beauty Colosseum where they chooses a not-amazingly-attractive person to go on and explain to a panel why she (its usually a she) would like to get her face done. It usually focuses on how that person has had a horrible life of bullying etc.
If that person manages to convince the panel, the TV show pays for the surgery.

The lady below gets her chin done which changes her life - looks completely different after.

The beginning of both of these clips show what a tough time they've had in life.

Dig how the show plays Frankenstein music when the girl comes on. Another dramatic Before and After. Just skip through the vid if you want to see what she looks like at the end - but check her previous appearance before you do.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

it quite the norm, accepted and quite popular here for cosmetic surgeries. it wasn't like this before the famous showbiz personalities started promoting and thanking their cosmetic surgeons

if a family member or a very close friend or a significant other wants to undergo cosmetic surgery, i'll allow them since this is what they want but they will bear the responsibility and the possible repercussions that came packaged with cosmetic surgery but i won't leave them behind and i'll be right beside them and ready to help them anytime ^___^

    I think in this case its harmless - after all, you see oppai in encyclopedias and other learning material without censors too ^^;

Lol, no censors for the real oppai, only for 2D? Cosmetic surgery can change how people would feel and how others would feel about you. Most likely those closest would say no but those who look at you after say "Hurray"

I think there's a limit. It's okay to do cosmetic surgery in extreme situations... but there's a reason why it's called cosmetic SURGERY.

I think people take it too lightly. And not being able to accept people who don't fit in the "norm" of fashion is a cultural decease created by the TV culture.

I had a friend who had liposculpture with an excuse she was "going into surgery anyways", and regreted a lot because of the pain she suffered after the operation not being as sucessful as it should be.

It's funny how you'll see all those gorgeus before-after pics, but they don't really say of things that could go wrong, the recovery times, the amount of stress and pain you have to go through, and other problems.

We have lots of deaths in Brazil cause by unprepared doctors during cosmetic surgery procedures... and even more cases where the procedure goes wrong, and the pacient is left 10 times worst from before the surgery... with horrible scars and such.

And then I hear about perfectly beautiful young girls... 14 and up... doing cosmetic surgery because they think they're ugly.

My friend broke his nose in a skating accident 2 years ago, it was very bad they had to do cosmetic surgery. His nose looked so f**king good he actually looked very pretty.

    I almost turned...(lets keep that a secret)

i personally don't care. I think if person wants to do, then let them. Free world after all should be free. While in high school i heard a lot of Japaneses girls that went there talking about eye surgery. Where they simply do a small cut and it makes your eyes appear bigger. Is there big emphases on eye surgery in japan?

There's nothing wrong with cosmetic surgery if you are doing it for yourself. People should be able to be happy about their appearance, and if it takes surgery to achieve that, than so be it.

I'm not going to deny the fact that some people are just plain butt ugly. It's an unfortunate thing that they have no control over, but that's just how it is. So I think it's good that surgery opens the possibility of people looking how they want to look.

On the other hand, some people take it a little too far...*coughMichealJacksoncough*. But that isn't because of the fact that surgery exists, it is because of their own insecurity. They aren't changing their appearance for themselves; they are changing it for others. But it's impossible to please everyone, so someone will always dislike your appearance. Thus, people like Michael Jackson try to change themselves so much that it just becomes damaging.

If plastic surgery wiill make you happier about your appearance then go for it. But make sure you are doing it for you. It shouldn't matter what other people think, it's only you that matters.

participants in plastic surgery programmes like "extreme makeover" often says that after such surgery, they get a boost in self confidence be it in work or love life. but it's kinda strange that u get self confidence from looks. I mean, self confidence is something from the heart and not from looks. but in society now, look counts too..

Pah! This is some hidden advertisement for surgical cabinets.
Of course, if they use dramatic plunging camera views, of course the viewers' reaction is obvious.

I don't feel surgery is right, except for medical reasons. If it's done for a whim or another, it is pitiful, ridiculous and needless to my eyes... and more precisely in the case of wooing others or getting attention and benefices afterwards.

Danny had the perfect opportunity to put real oppai pictures on his blog. Clever! XD (I was kidding there, don't pay attention to this paragraph)

The thing is that many people brand sexuality in the wrong way, either for it to be associated with Devil's temptation, or some feral instincts that do have to be shown to the public to shock them or make them gain interest (mostly for the sake of money)...

CyrusDraxs, don't blame them, blame their parents or genetics... or even accidents and risky behaviors that can be responsible for what they are.
No one wants to be ugly, poor or this and that. This is how the world is and you have to adapt to it. Or change but in the right ways (including leaving others be).

I think most plastic surgery is ridiculous. Not only do we need to learn to accept ourselves and others as we are, but it screws up natural selection!

Natural selection aside, there are some who really could benefit from it, though. The girl in the first video certainly was a good candidate. The only problem is that they didn't just fix her jaw. They gave her a full facelift, including a TERRIBLE nose job (shared by the girl in the second video). Before the surgery, she was actually a cute girl, aside from her jaw problem. After the surgery, she looked downright creepy.

If it makes you happy I see no reason not to do it. It's no different than getting a certain style of haircut because it appeals to you or getting a tattoo--it's just more expensive.

Why is it considered perfectly normal for people to chop off their hair and dye it different colors, but strange to do anything to the rest of your body? That seems somewhat narrow minded to me.

It's all just self-appeasement. It's unnecessary really--but there is nothing wrong with it if it makes you happy.

Plastic surgery has just been given a bad reputation because a small minority of people that have done it happen to be overly insecure. So why is it perfectly normal when some goth girl gets a purple Mohawk? That's the exact same grab for attention, it's just cheaper.

I've met a few people that have done plastic surgery to themselves that consider it, much like tattooing, to be an art form.

IMO "Good" plastic surgury shouldn't really change anything. just accentuate certain parts. You should still be able to see the "before" ness in the aftershot. If you can't, then you've gone too far!

I know a common procedure in the east is the enlarging of the eyes to look more "western." I remember watching a documentary a while back with a minor TV celeb in the east going thru it and, while in recovery, the eyelids no longer reached the bottom of the eye, so every time he blinked, you could still see the whites at the bottom. That was just disturbing. Thankfully, the problem cleared up afterwards.

It's easy to say "no, it's not needed" if your a person who does not need it. I say, if somebody wants it, they should get it. One day, technology might be able to change the very DNA that is in us all, until then, it's this.

CyrusDraxs, I agree with you, but the thing is that surgery procedures are never 100% safe or benign (Some can result in permanent injuries, deformities and even death, right?).

What if for some wish you want to have realized, you get a body that is worse than the original one? What if people accepted you and you still wanted to change for perfection's sake? If you change your nose, wouldn't you want to change your ears, your bottom, your top and all that's between?

We are all imperfect in some way and this is how humanity is. It's sad how people cannot accept themselves sometimes. This is what I wanted to say.
If then they still go for it, up to them, but if they start to cry, complain and shout because of risks and results, I will only shrug back at them.

Exile, the day Humans will be able to modify DNA and go for mass-production type techniques, we will lose our own identity and maybe become what they call "monsters" or "mutants".
Or maybe will we be at the doorstep of some utopia. I'm not sure about this.

I am fine with myself. I don't need to change what has been given to me.

Yeah, it does have it's dangers, but if someone goes into plastic surgery unaware of that they are probably really stupid or naive.

Personally I'd have a hard time spending several thousand dollars without first knowing exactly what it is I'm doing and what kind of risks there is involved. If you still go for it, despite knowing the risk, it was your own gamble and you can't blame anyone but yourself for that.

It's the same with any significant choice though; 99% of the time, the greater the potential impact of a decision, the greater the risk.
