Born and lived in rainy London for 27 years but never saw anything like this until I started to live in Japan. And just why does everybody have an umbrella?

The weather reporting over here is usually pretty good. When you leave for work on a sunny morning without an umbrella - and notice that everybody is carrying one - you know you're going to get drenched.

Not sure what its like now in the UK but weather reporting was pretty lousy back then - would often be caught out in the rain without a brolly.

When I lived in Seattle for five months, I noticed that very few people carried umbrellas and many would walk about in the rain. I guess it could be because most of the time it just drizzles down. I found myself leaving the brolly at home too.

If you are going to travel to Tokyo, this Yahoo weather page is pretty good - the first row is the current day - bottom row next day. Below that is the next seven days.

Whats the weather reporting like in your region?

When it rains, everything seems to grind to a halt - notice that this bunch has to queue up to use the stairs.
The trains would normally be delayed too when the rain is hard.
If you have a fetish for rain, then you will want to come during the rainy season (June 8th-ish - July 20-ish) and also during typhoon season (usually end of September).

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

    When it rains in my country the water comes smashing down like waterfalls. But the thing is, Nobody uses umberelas (SWE:Paraplyer) it´s like "Oh, what the heck, I´ll dry in 30 min."

    Yes, we are THAT cool.

    Ive never understood the japanese people's reliance on umbrellas. What with them being innovators and the developers of new technologies, i would have thought they would ditch cumbersome things in favour of waterproof jackets, hats or hoods. They would save a lot more space, which is useful in congested places (like tokyo!), theyre always with you, and dont need to be replaced.

    In the UK, outside of cities and towns, umbrellas are kind of considered 'not manly'. Many people would prefer to just get wet than walk around with an umbrella. Its different in cities like birmingham though.

    Looks like Shibuya.

    I remember grabbing an umbrella from Shibuya station for about 500yen. They have a store set up and people just pay and go!

    (P.S Umbrallas are real cheap in Japan and people seem to leave them lying around)

    I find the weather reports around me are fairly accurate. Most people don't seem to use umbrellas, either. In FL, when it rains, it can be pouring in one area, and yet 50 ft away (~15 meters), it is perfectly dry. Usually it starts and stops very suddenly, so most don't bother with umbrellas unless it's during the rainy season.

    Here in the Vancouver region of Canada, the weather changes so quickly, no one would even bother to listen the weather report... For example if the weather man/women say that its going to be sunny tomorrow, there is a 70% chance that rain is going to be pouring don on you when you step out of your door to go to school...

    Texas and Louisiana weather is fairly unpredictable. We'll have a forecast for perfectly sunny skies then around noon time we'll get 2 inches of rain from a quick moving thunderstorm. Then 15 minutes later it will be sunny again.

    And then there are the Tornadoes. I've always debated about getting a tornado shelter but haven't followed through since I've walked away from a half dozen in my life. I've been lucky in that regard.

    There is an old axiom about weather and Michigan. If you don't like it, wait a minute and it will change. Weather report pretty much the same. ^^;

    My fiancee still looks at people like they are crazy when they go out into the rain without an umbrella. Something a friend and her spent several minutes talking about one day in Osaka. ^^;

    I do enjoy the rain. Just can't stand the humidity that comes with it during the rainy season. Something I hated about Florida as well.

One time they say its not going to rain, next day, looked at the reports again, still say no rain. I go outside and it started raining as i walk to college. Summer weather was really random, raining then sunny then raining so on. I guess that what people get from global warming.

    The weather has finally turned cold here in the NorthEast, had to turn the heat on today in the house.
    We've just got past about 3 or 4 days of straight rain. Can't say things grind to a halt here when it rains. Though, the number of car accidents here tend to increase when it rains as everyone puts the pedal to the floor and jumps to light speed when it rains. I never understood this?
    When it rains or snows, people have a strange compulsion to drive faster? This happen to anyone else?

    jojo - I don't think it's people are driving faster, it's just many are driving slower but the people that drive at their usual pace seem faster considering the condition. And people that usually think others are driving faster are usually the ones that slowed down.. and well just in general have a knack for spotting these things to criticize about.

    BTW it's like that in Toronto too haha.

Its true no-one here carries a brolly, in fact they don't even have anything like a raincoat - surprising considering how much it rains... when in Japan I carry a folding umbrella because when it rains, it /rains/, and no clothing is going to protect you...

    The one thing I'm not looking forward to in Japan is the rain. But I guess it rains everywhere. Certainly no shortage of rain in the UK. I don't really watch reports or anything, just if it's the season I make sure to wear something with a hood so if I get caught atleast my hair stays nice and dry (that's all that's important really. A bit of rain won't melt me but it will mess up my hair) I'd love to have one of those clear and cheap umbrella's you get in Tokyo :P

Unfortunately the weathermen all suck. 1 hates nice weather and gets excited only if there is a giant storm or crappy weather coming. Used to be pretty bad, but now the predictions are getting better.
    I guess this is a worldwide phenomena, since the evolution of weather prediction affected the whole world.
    You know, satellite pictures and stuff.

    I usually take my umbrella with me in cloudy days, but sometimes I wonder if it's really worth it.
    The case is the exact opposite from what Danny described for Seattle... here where I live, it usually pours down a lot and the rain usually comes with strong winds.

    So it's useless to carry an umbrella because you'll end up soaked anyways...

    I'll be honest..

    we don't put too much faith in our weather forecast...

    During days with intense sunlight some people around here carry umbrellas for the shade. It's a good idea but a bit out of the ordinary.

    In my area, wind usually comes with the rain, so umbrellas are pretty useless unless you are trying to be Marry Poppins.

    If they predict rain, they are spot on, if they predict a sunny day, they are usually wrong:P

    In Japan, I will bring an umbrella if it looks like rain cause I don't like to get everything in the store or on the train wet and bother other people. Sometimes its too darn windy to use an umbrella. For those days I'll try and stay on base. American's do not use umbrellas very often and I never did. When in Rome...

    For weather, I usually go to weathercity.com/jp or something like that. I use google sometimes as well. They are generally fairly accurate 2 days ahead.

    When I first moved to SoCal I noticed....

    1) A light drizzle rates apparently Team Coveragee,
    2) There is no end to the whining about ANY moisture falling from the sky,
    3) Even 5 minutes of sprinkles screws up traffic for the rest of the day
    4) Southern Californians CAN drive in the rain, it's the new residents who came from out of state which fail to realize that, the rain brings up ALL the oil and grease collected on the roads and they can't expect to stop very easily.

    The weather here is very unpredictable >.<
    You could put the washing on the line at 11am and find it soaked within an hour ^^;
    The reverse is also true...
