See more photos showing the comparisons between the Singapore and Hong Kong version of ToLove-Ru.

The Hong Kong version is pretty much the same as the Japanese version but the Singaporean version has had Lala-chans gorgeous pupils rubbed out...

Also heard from Singaporean readers about ecchi pages ripped out from magazines before they are sold in Kinokuniya @.@

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

    lol @ ripped out pages.

I wonder who rips the pages out? Maybe the Kinokuniya in Singapore should consider wrapping magazines in plastic like we do in Los Angeles. I think that's why Kinokuniya wraps manga and magazines in L.A.'s retailer, to keep customers from stealing pages from newly stocked manga and magazines.

Word? Singapore is that strict on censorship? I must say but wouldn't this make the sales and business at Kinokuniya in Singapore bad? Knowing this I would not buy anything from Kinokuniya in Singapore.

I don't think Kinokuniya does that- it's the customs officers who do it. Once I ordered a non-adult manga by doujin writer Awatake Takahiro, and when it arrived it had marker marks all over it. Although I'd paid for it, they allowed me to get a refund, which they don't really have an obligation to do anyway. It was nice of them, and I'll keep using their services. btw, they said the problem (censorship) was much worse with the chinese manga from HK.

Then again, that's the Malaysian (KL) branch, so I really wouldn't know about the Singaporean ones. Just bought two copies of School Rumble from the Takashimaya outlet during the Christmas Sale last year, which doesn't really have much to censor anyway.

Guys, it's not the bookstore's fault that they have to rip out pages or sell censored items. : It's Singapore's censorship LAWS. They could very well not sell those magazines at all, instead of going through each and every one and removing the offending pages.

Scans/scanlations cannot compare to owning original printed material.

I downloaded scanlations of Kodomo No Jikan manga for volume 1 but i would rather own an actual copy, which is impossible due to the cancellation of Kodomo No Jikan manga in the states. I never finished reading Kodomo No Jikan either.

As for ordering online for un-abused material, that's what i wanted to know and confirm. I could not stand buying material that is not complete.

That I can agree... But manga is expensive...

For instance, NEGIMA was a series in which I started reading scans of. I wanted to actually hold the manga and read as I prefer it to reading on the PC's screen due to the strain on the eyes.

However, each volume of the American version (uncensored) was about 18 SGD. Twice the price of the censored version (local). ARGH!

Tell me they are not forcing me to turn to illegal copies.

That's just unfair. -wry- While I can understand your argument that censorship is bad, I do not agree that manga is expensive. You're probably a victim of markup, but I've recently been getting manga from bookdepository.co.uk - the latest Negima! volume (20) sells for 6.16 pounds (~13 SGD) with free worldwide shipping; earlier volumes are cheaper. In Sydney, manga retails for 15AUD up. We don't even have local versions. -wry-

Truth is, no one is 'forcing' you to turn to illegal copies. If you want to support a mangaka/production studio enough (or want to have a copy enough), you'd buy it anyway -- and that's from observing a few hardcore otaku friends of mine. (It's like saying I can get ebooks, so they're forcing me not to buy this book by pricing it at 18 bucks...and 18 bucks and up IS the rrp of normal books here. Freaking annoying.) Actually buying a physical copy of what we enjoy for free online should be the goal for most people who can afford it. If you can't, at least spread the word if you enjoyed a manga or anime, is how I look at it. :)

Then again, I did live in SG for most of my life, and only got into anime/manga in Australia. -wry- With every meal of substandard quality and an average of 10AUD (which is cheap), I probably have a different idea of what's cheap or expensive.

Please... Even Code Geass was censored... WHY?

I tell you... This country is getting more and more on my nerves with their ridiculous 'Censorship' laws. Conservative society? Why deny others the freedom just so that you won't offend the minority? Frankly, I feel sad that I live here (for some reasons), though I am glad for others.

Really. What does a difference of 2 sploches do?

People are so afraid that these things will corrupt the young. Just look at the movies, magazines and other things that contain so many other vices. Why are people so conservative? I fail to understand.

For my full rant about censorship and how ridiculous this is, please see: http://actar.wordpress.com/2008/11/01/censorship-everything-you-need-to-know/

Something that I need to mention, Singapore supports CENSORSHIP. They also want us to avoid ILLEGAL or PIRATE copies of Manga and Anime. By censoring the medium, aren't they forcing us to turn to the original uncensored sources via unscrupulous means?

I much see it the same way.

Censorship greatly decreases the quality of the original product. As do bad localizations, horrible voice actors, or whatever the hell else local laws or companies mess the original products up with.

Man. I know we Germans are touchy about this, but I'm an adult. Swastika in my Hellsing aren't going to kill me. Don't change them into meaningless patterns. It's not like the manga portrays them in any positive light whatsoever.

Stuff like that. Drives me nuts. D:

Destroy the original work, expect us to pay out of the nose for it despite that, and then get angry when people either get imports or acquire them via illegal means.

Anime that aired in Japan in gorgeous FullHD, yet are only available for sale as DVDs are a bad case of this as well. Darn series can be as good as it wants. If the stuff I pay money for looks like crap compared to what I already have on the drive, it's really hard to actually go out and buy the stuff. =//

Do these censors think that by removing images of nipples and genitals, the overall moral value of the country will improve? That by censoring, they are protecting our "innocent minds"? Or are they doing so just to appease the people who will raise hell about it?

Please... censorship is stupid. It spoils the original intention of the artist, and is also a form of privacy intrusion ie Big Brother knows best, and Big Brother says nipples are bad for you.

Instead of censorship, why not strengthen age restriction rules?

Forgive me if Im incoherent. I just woke up.

Well to be fair... The HK version is wrapped with the "Over 18 years of age" warning just like Full Metal Alchemist has. I don't know if the writer took it off or not but, the Singaporean version doesn't which means anyone can just pick up the Manga to view.

I think just erasing the "pupils" is kind of stupid although I guess it makes it look like the character's just wearing a body suit.

Yeah, Danny didn't mention it so I was wondering when someone would. The HK version is actually marked 18+. meaning it's sold as adult material - hence the lack of censorship. The Singapore version sits on the rack, along with the other regular material that any kid could pick up and read.

As such, I don't have any issue with this at all.

Ripping out magazine and sell it i believe is a crime.

Remember, seller should selling new product, ripping the product equal to sell used product. Unless you had noticed by the seller previously, if you buy a mags and found out it was ripped off, you can sue or at least ask for refund.

Censorship is good, however the way of doing that is wrong.

I believe Hongkong already using the right term of censor. Remember, the meaning of censor is to sense the content and judge the rating. If the rating said 18+ then the book publisher must follow that regulation by putting 18+ tag on the book.

If the book publisher ask for lower rating by requesting "Teen rating" for example. The censor board must giving the qualify for that rating and asking the publiher to make the mod (like removing nipple, or covering crotch area with their own way. But if the publisher want to be original then they must use 18+ rating.

I hope this one giving enlightment for people who still didnt understand of how respecting art and giving a regulation of this kind of "nipple, nekkid, and dolphin" matter.

I personally don't think censorship is bad. It in no way harms anybody. Personally, I don't need foul language or nudity to spice up entertainment. Besides, it's not so much an attempt to keep "questionable content" from level headed adults. It's more an attempt to keep it from minors who's parent's can't be there every single second of the day to monitor their entertainment intake. As a single father of 3, I have no choice but to leave my kids alone at home a couple hours Monday through Friday. I've placed checks and balances where they are needed as any responsible parent would, but there are ways around just about everything. I see censorship as a type of a helping hand.

Besides, in this day and age, if uncensored material is desired, there are tons of places to find them. If not the exact media, then one like it. So it's not like adults are deprived.

    Merry Christmas, y'all!

Censorship is apparent at some level in all countries western or asian countries singapore chooses to make the image available to a wider and in this case younger audience by editing where as hong kong has chosen not to edit but to restrict the age of those who can (legally) purchase, age restriction is just another form of censorship just as adult movies are censored for their explicit content via age restriction and japan goes even further censoring both the age of purchasers and visual content of thier av
censorship is a compromise of freedom do you remove all forms of censorship and allow everyone to be exposed to material that may contain sexual explicitness, racism, fascism, sexism or any other "ism" that may be or do you compromise your freedom to protect those who society feels need it ie children it is a difficult issue that is handled in many different ways by many different governments if you feel strongly do something about it tell someone, newspapers, use the net don't simply say that you don't like it

I bet the censor ship office has a hidden vault with all the ripped out pages...

What a treasure trove that'd be.

Don't think they rip out all for all the books.
Never encountered any ripped pages in the DHM and mangas i bought from Kinokuniya.

Page ripper, is that a job?

bah this level of censorship is nothing. I've read novels from the public library with the naughty bit ripped out too. Even non-pictorial is bad for them... -_-"

I never supports censorship. It make innocent boys grow up to think that girls doesn't have pupils. Well, at least Negima was not censored..I'd hate the market swimsuit.. If they want to draw a swimsuit, at least draw something sexier..
