A ton of anime n manga Ita Trains to be seen at Pink Tentacle.
And they also have pics of this ninja train below too.

Reminds me that I need to get moving on working on Itasha stickers of the Suenga Sisters.

Maybe not downright otaku related outfits, but I still like them ^^

I like the video too. It's quite funny how they build up until you see the train. I like some of the other trains in the link better, like the zebra one and the lower left of the Doraemon trains.

Here the railroads used their own paint schemes (nothing like this though) but then strict competition kicked in and they started buying locomotives from each other without repainting them besides removing the logo of the old owner so now we have trains with colour schemes from 1-3 railroads in the same train and since the railroads also borrow each others' tracks, it makes it rather confusing to figure out who actually owns the train you see in front of you. Luckily there is one ticket system that fits all railroads so you don't have to care about owner. Also it's mainly the freight that's hardest to figure out.

Tymmur; here in Tokyo, you can stand at a subway station and watch as trains of *different companies* are in service on the same subway line. On the Fukutoshin Line, you can espy Tokyo Metro, Tobu, and Seibu-owned consists, all slightly different, but mechanically alike. On the Chiyoda line, it is Tokyo Metro, JR, and Odakyu.
On the Toei Asakusa line (the route which extends to Narita Airport), you can view Toei, Keisei, and Keikyu consists.

Well JR just retired the Shinkansen series 0 because it was too slow (210 km/h... I think).

Funny thing is that it's enough for quite a lot of railroads in Europe and unlike rest of Japan, the Shinkansen uses the same gauge (distance between rails) as Europe and the voltage fits some European railroads too. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody in Europe decides to buy some of them because it's just a matter of putting them on a ship and move them. They might work "out of the box". Ariva Poland bought a whole fleet of up to 40 years old trains a few years ago so railroads really do buy old trains.

ok, this went off topic, but I just liked to share that it wouldn't be totally unrealistic to get Japanese trains to Europe and while I don't think it will happen, I do think it would be an improvement if it did ^^

Italy appears to only use 25 kV on high speed lines though. See the list of countries using "correct" voltage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_systems_for_electric_rail_traction#25_kV_50.C2.A0Hz_Overhead (remember that some of the countries in that list uses a different gauge and will not be able to handle Shinkansen. Finland is an example of such countries)

But you are right. Even the best trains will work horrible when operated by people failing to control the flow correctly. I recall politicians requested new trains here to ensure trains on time and then the railroad said "but most of the delays are due to outdated and worn out signals". You can't just copy one thing from a working system and then presume everything to work.

You would be scared if you knew the price of the daily running costs compared to the price of a painting like this. Besides railroads and tax money isn't directly linked when it isn't government owned railroads (The Japanese government sold all railroads 20 years ago to get rid of a horrible inefficient leadership)

We have to remember that the railroad depends on getting paying passengers so if a paintjob can make more people use the train, then it's an investment.

Japan's railways are mostly privatized these days, actually.

Still, these are ways to earn money, not just waste it. A few of them are artistic endeavors intended to bring attention to the company, but even more of them are flat-out advertisements. The train companies earn money through this method.

The problem is not to get a train. Just buy retired one for the price the scrapyard will pay. The problem is that trains are rather big so they are expensive to move on a lorry and they do take up a whole lot of space. On top of that it's kind of hard to have anywhere to drive it.

A few people actually have retired trains stored in barns and stuff but collecting figures is easier and cheaper.

I have been informed that the Swedish national railroad museum (I think it was that one) is selling steam locomotives for scrap price. They lack room to store them and will prefer to sell them to whoever wants one rather than scrapping them and they will just rust away if they stay where they are now. I wouldn't mind one, but I have nowhere to place it and I don't even want to know the price of moving something that big across countries >.<

I think ita-trains might be pushing the concept a little too far... after all, an itasha is a car that you own and thus represents yourself. A train on the other hand is something shared by many people. I dunno, maybe I'm just old fashioned. I could be swayed by a ita-Series 500 Nozomi Shinkansen...

    Awesome!
I'm having trouble getting to the Pink Tentacle link... anyone else?
I'm getting kinda pissed about errors regarding "Corrupt links".... first it was Forbidden Planet uk store, now this.

I wonder if my ISP is messing with filters...

It works just fine for me. I read that more and more places start to filter the internet :(

Maybe I'm in luck because all ISPs in my area joined forces and declared that they will not filter anything besides 3D loli stuff. The question is if they can decide that on their own since some copyright holder works very hard on banning torrent sites (without caring for torrent content).

I read about a survey telling that around 90% of the Chinese population supports their filters against "mind corrupting and/or dangerous web pages". I support this idea but I don't trust people to declare what's ok and what's not because I tend to disagree with the classifications.
